The Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln: A Book of Quotations (Thrift Edition)
ASIN: 0972486917 |
Book Description
New insights into America's favorite president! Stories and quotations as Lincoln himself demonstrates his own faith in God, the Bible and the Saviour.
Customer Reviews:
A shallow overview.......2007-02-16
This book's strength is that it places Lincoln's faith in the context of the monumental events that affected his life. However, it is a basic book with a minimal bibliography that retells stories that most Lincoln researchers know well. It tells the story in a conversational tone, and would make an excellent book report for a Christian high school history class, but I would not recommend it for serious research on the topic. In preparing for a presentation on Lincoln and his relationship with God, I found Lincoln on God and Country by Gordon Leidner and Michael Burlingame to be a much better reference.
THE RELIGIOUS SIDE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN.......2007-01-25
This book examines the religious and spiritual side of Abraham Lincoln in depth and I really enjoyed reading this book. This book is a must for any historian, history teacher, or history enthuiast. This book is excellent, easy to understand, and is well-written. After reading this book, I donated it to a local supermarket for Juvenille Diabetes Research, and it was gone the next day. ENJOYED IT IMMENSENLY.
Examining the religious side of Abraham Lincoln.......2004-12-28
Abraham Lincoln has proven to be somewhat of an enigma for many historians. A person who seemed to embrace the Christian religion he was nevertheless a person who never joined a church. Although some sources state that he never attended church the records of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington show that he attended there regularly during his presidential years. For many the ultimate determination of his religious leanings are based on his actions, his words, and the writings of his close friend Charles Carleton Coffin who states that a spiritual crisis in 1841 was the turning point in Lincoln's life and resulted in his embracing Christianity.
In The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln author V. Neil Wyrick examines this spiritual side of one of our favorite presidents. Lincoln's strong reliance on God's guidance and the Bible shows throughout the book as you read an account of his life that focuses not on politics, but on belief. While some may argue that President Lincoln was not a Christian, very few would argue that he had a deep abiding sense of belief in God that kept him going even in the worst of times. The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is a recommended read.
Vignettes about the beliefs of a truly great man .......2004-10-30
The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln by retired Presbyterian minister V. Neil Wyrick is a biography of America's famous president of the Civil War era, from a different perspective. Focusing upon Lincoln's spiritual life, and the manner in which his faith influenced his politics, it traces his decisions and events that speak strongly of his faith in God and the Bible even during the darkest hours of the war. Insights and vignettes about the beliefs of a truly great man reveal the true story behind popularly circulated tales of Lincoln's life and faith, in this engrossing new portrait.
Wonderful and engaging.......2004-06-19
Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious Presidents. This book is a very pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information.
I recommend it for the person who is a teacher or student of history, as the book gives insight into the spiritual aspect of Lincoln.
I recommend it for the religious person who has no historical background. Wyrick gives enough historical background for the non-historian to enjoy the book.

Book Description
As part of a unique series covering the grand sweep of Western civilization from ancient to present times, this biographical dictionary provides introductory information on 315 leading cultural figures of late medieval and early modern Europe. Taking a cultural approach not typically found in general biographical dictionaries, the work includes literary, philosophical, artistic, military, religious, humanistic, musical, economic, and exploratory figures. Political figures are included only if they patronized the arts, and coverage focuses on their cultural impact. Figures from western European countries, such as Italy, France, England, Iberia, the Low Countries, and the Holy Roman Empire predominate, but outlying areas such as Scotland, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe are also represented. Late medieval Europe was an age of crisis. With the Papacy removed to Avignon, the schism in the Catholic Church shook the very core of medieval belief. The Hundred Years' War devastated France. The Black Death decimated the population. Yet out of this crisis grew an age of renewal, leading to the Renaissance. The great Italian city-states developed. Humanism reawakened interest in the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. Dante and Boccaccio began writing in their Tuscan vernacular. Italian artists became humanists and flourished. As the genius of Italy began spreading to northern and western Europe at the end of the 15th century, the age of renewal was completed. This book provides thorough basic information on the major cultural figures of this tumultuous era of crisis and renewal.

From the author: Under U.S. federal and state tax laws, qualifying non-profit organizations receive several kinds of tax benefits. However, the benefits come with compliance costs, as eligible organizations must first apply for them and then file the annual reports necessary to maintain them. We use a national survey to measure the latter, estimating them at $3.2 billion for 2000. Additional results are: (1) evidence of scale economies; (2) choosing to file the federal Form 990 (over the shorter Form 990-EZ) raises expenditures on professional advisors; and (3) using a consolidated reporting form or electronic filing reduces state costs.

From the supplier: Tax law changes arising out of the Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1993 will provide tax-exempt organizations with increased reporting requirements, limitations on lobbying expenses, improved treatment of certain real estate holdings and increased fund-raising opportunities. The higher income tax rates and reduced alternative minimum tax on donations of appreciated capital gain property should lead to increased charitable donations, though documentation required will also increase. Lobbying expenses must now be excluded from deductible amounts, and certain real estate will no longer be subject to the unrelated business income tax.

From the supplier: IRS proposed regulation section 1.513-7 regarding travel activities supplements IRS revenue rulings providing guidance regarding business activities carried on by nonprofit institutions which could result in unrelated business taxable income. The regulation includes four examples which are not comprehensive but which provide adequate guidelines for participation in travel and tour activities.

Book Description
The next star of ABC's The Bachelor, and the funny guy who stole America's heart on The Bachelorette shares hard-earned advice and wisdom on how life's unexpected setbacks can lead to unexpected joy.
One Thanksgiving weekend Bob Guiney came home to find a white Post-it(tm) note from his wife informing him that she wanted a divorce. On top of his broken heart, he suffered a series of physical injuries, gained forty pounds, and fell into a deep depression. For the first time in his life, he found himself at rock bottom, unsure of how to pick up the pieces.
What a Difference a Year Makes looks, month-by-month, at a devastating year and the wise words and lessons drawn from uncles, aunts, parents, and his best friend: Grandma. "On paper," he writes, "I looked like a failure-no football career, no music career, and a divorce. But actually I'm doing better than I ever have in my life."
With the honesty and humor that have made Bob America's favorite bachelor, he explores the simple but valuable life lessons that helped him return to vitality and optimism. The result is a witty and warm book that will touch and inspire anyone who has ever suffered a broken heart.
Customer Reviews:
Good enough book, but lucky break.......2005-08-31
While this book is a good enough, light read, it would NEVER have been made/released if it weren't for the Bachelor. If you are a fan of Guiney's you will like it; other than that, it's another story that shouldn't really have made it to print. He's not out finding cures for cancer or anything, and he's getting money out of the story of his life. While I like him, I can't honestly recommend this to any serious reader.
Bib Guiney - a boring year in review.......2004-10-20
It turns out the book starts at the time The Bachelor premiered on television and ends before he is about to tape the next season of The Bachelor. There are thirteen chapters, covering February through February with the chapters actually covering a specific month.
The acknowledgments went on for three pages, thanking everyone he could possibly think of! The introduction gives a recap on his "pseudo celebrity", appearing on the Oprah show and the chance meeting on an airplane that led to the writing of the book. The afterword covers the period from The Bachelorette to The Bachelor and explains the airplane meeting.
In the middle is a nine page black and white spread showcasing baby photos through college football days. I would have rather had photos from the television series, like behind the scenes. If your intent on reading this self indulging book is to learn tidbits from either show you will be sorely disappointed. The only insight I learned is that there were seventy pages of questions to answer for the television show. Not one example was shared for the reading audience. He had literally only three weeks from the time he learned he was chosen as a Bachelor to appear on The Bachelorette for taping. As a viewer of the show I would have preferred learning more about how he prepared and what he was allowed to pack for the trip.
The marriage did not last three years, yet Bob was devastated at the breakup. Jennifer left him in a bizarre way, leaving a post it note behind with her intentions on ending the marriage. Bob was a partner in a mortgage business, which he did not discuss while on The Bachelorette. He writes that he is just the average guy next door that will mow your lawn. It came as a surprise to the other men on the show that Bob was in a band and had played college football.
He only briefly mentioned The Oprah Show. I feel that show is what made him more popular and she was the one he had consulted before agreeing to be The Bachelor. It was evident when reading that Bob was not really interested in starting a relationship with Trista while he was on The Bachelorette since he was still mending his broken heart.
The best part of reading through this book was getting to the end.
SELF-INDULGENT, EGOTISTICAL, CLICHE and BOOOR-INGGGG!!!!!!.......2004-08-21
Ugh, what a waste.
The guy has absolutely NOTHING original or new to say....about ANYTHING. Perhaps this was a journal Bob could have given to his therapist to show his "progress." Because who else cares about any of this besides BOB? The problem is that BOB has become arrogant enough to think that other people really do. 15 Minutes of Fame went to this guy's head....for someone who claims to be "self-deprecating," this book was all about Bob's attempt to inflate his own ego. (With the premise of trying to "inspire" his readers.) He's clearly NOT over his ex-wife, he claims he was so helpful in rushing to protect her privacy, and then goes on to write a book where she is one of the main features.
He uses so many cliches, tries waaaay to hard to boost his own ego (Really, I was only fat for a few months...REALLY. I used to be a star athlete. I used to be hot. Girls all dig me. I'm successful." Which is all fine, except I don't think BOB really believes it. He comes across as insecure, with plenty of hang ups, trying to convince the reader he's "over it." Sounds more like BOB has written this in a LAME attempt to convince himself.
Oh and Bob....if you are still scanning the Internet looking for what people are saying about you, here's a piece of advice....Get Over Yourself.
Good book.......2004-06-08
I loved this book. It was funny at times, sad at times. But definitely a happy ending.
Sooooo inspiring!.......2004-06-07
Or, to use Bob's favorite word--AMAZING! It's an amazing book from an amazing man. I had an amazing time reading it. It is the most dramatic book EVER! And I mean that. I am a fan of the Bachelor. Whenever it comes on, I lock the kids in their rooms, muzzle the dog and drug my husband so he passes out. I don't want to be interrupted at all. And BOB made it all worth it! I loved him so much, I just had to know his philosophy of life. And this book spells it out. Does it ever! Bob used to be a big fatso, but now, although he's still chubby, he's lost most of the weight. One of my friends, who is now an ex-friend, said that this book is a stupid waste of time, that Bob thinks (...) that he's just trying to drum up attention for his CD, "3 Sides", which is a shoo-in to reach the #1 position on the charts. With a bullet! It's sad that trees are chopped down to make paper, but when they're pulped to make the paper to make books like this one, which will improve your attitude, your mind and make you happy to be alive, that's a good thing! BUY IT!
Book Description
Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish storyteller whose fairy tales are known all over the world, was also a gifted artist. He made hundreds, perhaps thousands, of paper cuttings of swans, clowns, toy theaters, windmills, angels, and other whimsical images. Often he made the paper cuttings while telling a story, then gave them to the children listening to him. In this inspired biography, Beth Wagner Brust tells the story of Andersen as an artist who used his many talents to escape the poverty into which he was born and who entertained others with not only his famous stories but also his innovative and original art.

Fascinating Story.......2007-02-06
As a storyteller I love to tell stories by Hans Christian Anderson and was thrilled to find out he was an accomplished cutter of paper. While his paper cuttings are much more intricate than the ones I do when I tell stories, the author helped me to understand that his ability to tell stories while cutting paper is a good way to keep the attention of small children. I found that "Grandma's Magic Scissors" by Linda S. Day was a good book to learn basic paper cutting skills and hope that someday I can learn to cut the intricate designs that this master storyteller cut, although I think I will carry my scissors in a bag and not my boot.
A Delight for All Ages.......2005-11-21
I'm a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan. I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales. It's hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen's cut paper work. Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book. She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.
This Book Is A Real Treasure.......2005-04-09
Like so many Americans, I had no idea HC Andersen was a paper-cutting genius, until reading the series of articles by Ms. Brust in the LA Times. Not to mention that he cut these "amazing" intricate pieces while telling one of his stories to a roomful of listeners at the same time.
The book's a treasure in that I feel like I've discovered gold within. Not simply a children's book, it's so well written and full of surprises, I think it will appeal to readers of all ages, from the casually curious child or adult to the Andersen enthusiast like me.
Great.......2000-05-24
Not only is the author great (I know her!) but this book explores an interesting topic. Those paper cuttings are unreal! I mean they are real, but they are so amazing!

Excellent for young readers.......2006-08-26
The ValueTale series is the only series I have ever found the published biographies that would interest fourth-graders. Each page contains colorful, cartoon-like illustrations. Each book in the series creates an imaginary friend for the main character (for young Hans it's an ugly duckling). The main part of the book tells a simplified historical fiction biography of the character, and the last page is always a fact sheet to fill in any biographical details that didn't fit in the story. Each biography encourages a value.
I loved these books when I was a kid, and now I've collected them for my own daughter. I found the appeal goes well beyond fourth grade--I will still pick one up to get a quick overview of who a person is.
Book Description
He was the son of a cobbler-awkward, funny-looking, and perhaps a bit crazy. But Hans Christian Andersen went on to become the most beloved children's writer of all time. Here in rich detail that includes quotes from Andersen's own stories, Jane Yolen explores his youth and how his words were inspired by life experiences. His was a childhood that saw the death of his father, an early love for the theater, and the burning passion to become a writer against all odds.
Lushly illustrated by Dennis Nolan, The Perfect Wizard is the ideal selec- tion to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Andersen's birth on April 2, 2005.

A perceptive biography of a master story teller.......2001-05-16
Biographies of authors always make good books for those who have already read them. Of course an easily accessible story teller like Han Christian Andersen is popular with both kids and their parents and rightly elevated into a cultural mascot by his country cousins,Danes. I spotted this well written book in an obscure corner labeled "Teaching aids" next to the Children's Books Section in the local Border's Books Store. Having visited and stayed in Denmark recently I was familiar with almost all the landmarks that were mentioned and hence could enjoy it better. It was interesting to note that he could not visit his mother in Odense for lack of money to pay the fare for ferry, while today a tourist takes less than an hour by high speed train to zoom there to visit Han Andersen's Childhood Home (preserved as a museum) from Copenhagen.Though his homosexuality recieves some sensitive appraisal that is not the focus of this biography. I was also amused to note the attempt of Danish establishment to claim this icon of Danish culture as one of their own by denying him his working class roots and floating rumours of him, being the illegitimate child of some unmarried Royal Princess !! Royal blood or no royal blood; timeless stories written by this master story teller of nineteenth century will continue to instill a reading habit in many boys and girls for centuries. This book certainly serves as a window into the times and circumstances of this creative genius who had his share of tyrannical teachers and devoted friends. His attempts to eke out a lunch or dinner invitation from wellwishers/friends to save on scholarship money reminded me the circumstances under which many poor South Indian Brahmin boys used to study when they were taking their meals in different households on different days of a week by turns out of sheer goodwill and/or pity that they could muster from their own compatriates. If one likes to read about books and authors another one that immediately comes to mind is: The Art of Fiction : An Introduction to Ten Novels and Their Authors by W. Somerset Maugham.

Book Description
This beautifully illustrated biography commemorates the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth. Written by one of Denmark’s best-known children’s authors, Hjørdis Varmer, the book chronicles the fairy-tale like story of Andersen’s life, describing how the eccentric Andersen came from a poor family, was ridiculed by other children, and struggled for many years before finally finding world-wide fame writing fairy tales such as The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, and The Nightingale.
Award-winning illustrator Lilian Brøgger’s highly original illustrations bring out the true spirit of the famous storyteller and incorporate many of Andersen’s own paper cuttings and drawings, making this children’s book one to be cherished.
