This is a book of photographs about Robert E. Lee, and features photos not only of Lee but of the people, places, and events that were important in his life. The book has some commentary on the photos, but the focus is the photographs, not the text. The book is designed to complement Thomas' biography of Lee. As a stand-alone book, it provides a brief overview of Lee's life.

Without a doubt I have been a diehard fan of Emory Thomas since I attended one of his guest lectures promoting the highly acclaimed biography on the man and soldier Robert E. Lee. His words on the death of LEE were most memorable.

His recent pictorial essay embodied in this new publication chroniclizes Lee throughout his lifetime in vintage photographs. When I met Lee's great grand daughter Anne Carter Zimmer, I realized that some rather poignant pictures existed, but this book supports the fact.

This book should be purchased as a bedtime companion to Thomas's brilliant biography of the icon we know as Lee. The layout and selection of photographs in this publication truly satisfy one's soul in meditative reflection. Don't miss.

Having been in the service of serving abandoned, behaviorally disturbed children and adolescents for 32 years, I was able to reminisce and find memories explicity tied to this book. The messages are accurate, profound, and direct. The chapters relive one man's story but the themes are multiplied by the number of kids in care from yesterday to the present and the stories are wide and varied. There are many stories in the lives of children from both yesteryear to this present day and age.The names change and the faces are different but the broken body and mind are still evident today. When one reads this book you become acutely aware of why behavior, emotion,identity, can go awry. All of the clinical terminology which labels children in placement existed then and still does today. What is remarkable and I have seen it over and over is that there are those who "will" to live, who "will" to grow, who never give up. Out of all the chaos emerges a Rob Mitchell and there are numbers upon numbers who, in spite of the many abuses and neglect, rise to become vibrant creative human beings like he has. This is a story of one of them. And, of so many of the children I have seen rise out of their pathology and into health, I have also seen a remarkable closeness to an abiding faith. Rob Mitchell is a man of that faith. Castaway Kid is just one of many castaway kids. What a wonderful read.

Poignant story of survival and faith.......2007-08-11

Castaway Kid is a wonderful autobiography for anyone similarly struggling in life with circumstances beyond their control. If you think adult struggles are overwhelming, think how you'd be able to handle them as a child, when age works against you as you try to improve your situation with intelligent questions for the only adults supposed to take care of you. This is an inspirational Horatio Alger story: the kind of story that reminds you how well you have it in a free society, but where people still make mistakes and others suffer as a consequence, notwithstanding the best of intentions of some who want to help.
Full disclosure here: I also went to school with Mr. Mitchell at Guilford. But I had only a limited knowledge of his childhood and the circumstances of his parents and the two grandmothers. The details in this book were things he certainly kept private in the dorm and on campus. And I never would have guessed how irreligious he was until his epiphany. I like to think that some of the friendships he made at Guilford helped stabilize his renewed faith in mankind, even if only secondary to his faith in God. All his struggles as an adult obviously pale compared to what he had to go through as a child. But as an inspirational and motivational story, it is a very pleasant read, indeed.

Survival, God's Grace, and Hope.......2007-08-08

Too often we read about children lost in the system and of others who have been so beaten down that they never recover. Thus I found this book to be a refreshing change. Filled with hope, Rob eloquently shares his story of surviving and thriving, against all odds. I know people who lived in Princeton and have confirmed the details of Rob's story. Thank God for the Gigis and Nolas in the world who care for kids like Rob. Thanks, Rob, for baring your soul.

encouragement for all of us.......2007-08-07

This is a real page turner. I finished it in a weekend and my wife stayed up half the night finishing it. She said "I couldn't put it down".

I saw myself in so many of Rob's struggles as a youth and a young man. My situation was far more normal than his and yet the challenges for self acceptance and the stuggle to do the right thing were the same.

I highly recomend this to both young and not so young who want to be encouraged. God is clearly in control in Rob's life (and mine) in spite of circumstances.

Its military has gained international acclaim for being professional, well trained and highly disciplined. Many people get nervous when calling a cold contact. The book shows descriptive conversations for the phone farm to ease your tensions. It also covers objections by the prospect. A quiz is included to prepare you for the real thing. Stratagy of the telemarketing methods are realavant to the real estate market. Also discussed is after the initial contact when a prospect calls you. Overall the book contains a lot of information. Most of it can be used as is. Some modifying of the scripts may be needed to fit your particular case.

Don't be Fooled-------.......2007-04-12

What a waste of my money! As others have stated, the somewhat detailed "history" of Johnny's family is interesting. However, once the reader gets to his films, it's basically a criticism of Johnny and every film he has done. This is just another author making money from Johnny Depp's name under the guise of being an expert on the actor. A much better read is Johnny Depp by Christopher Heard. This is an author who actually "gets" Johnny Depp and provides more details about his life/movies that are accurate and not opinionated like Meikle.

Denis Meikle: A Kind of DElusion.......2006-08-27

I agree with everything Mazzy D said.
This one did start out as a pretty straightforward bio, but as I went along, and it focused on his films and his romances, there came the revelation that this author did not want you to like Johnny Depp, and it's full of misquotes and rumor.
He seems to go out of his way to find the most unflattering reviews and he seems to be bringing down almost all of the films and everyone involved in them (in particular poor Tim Burton)!
Occassionally he'll put a positve comment in there for good measure, but Denis Meikle is a verbose, sef-absorbed charletan.

There's money to be made for anyone and everyone to write rubbish and ride along the crest of Johnny's tidal wave of current success.
I'm glad I did not purchase this book!

This book is the illusion.......2005-12-08

I'm not really sure why a writer would make the decision to write a book on someone whose films he didn't particularly care for. It starts off quite well with an interesting look at Depp's family history but then takes a downward turn. Each film Johnny has appeared in since the start of his career is criticized one at a time (except for perhaps Blow in which the author manages to scrounge up a positive thought or two-WOW). Not to mention that there are glaring typos and random errors that any well versed Depp fan/historian would pick up in a heartbeat (The Arizona Dream 12 minute wedding sequence was not Paul's, it was Axel's for goodness sake!)

And what is this illusion that the author speaks of? Why, it's the idea that perhaps Depp and his agent Tracey Jacobs have managed to fool us all by marketing his personality in order to make him who he is today. Funny, and here I thought his success might have something to do with his gift for transforming into the various characters he has played over the years. But what do I know. I'm just a brainless fan. And this book is definitely not fan friendly.

In conclusion, this book is more suitable for someone who wishes to learn the "fine art" of becoming a film critic. I'm sorry I didn't know all this beforehand.

Interesting biography.......2005-09-01

This biography was interesting but it was more about the history of Johnny's movies than about the great actor himself. The author goes into great detail about the directors and the screen plays so much so I found it at times to be confusing. He made some errors in his facts. The worst was the telling of the last scene of the POTC where he left out one of the best lines in the movie.

A Stirring Memoir of a Native American Child Raised by the State.......2007-09-20

This is a chilling, true-life account of a childhood that should have never been, and 17 years of life that would forever haunt the author, Peter Razor. Peter, an intelligent boy that was raised in an orphanage as a ward of the state, then placed in an abusive indentured farm home had a childhood that is reprehensible, and sadly true. Supposedly protected by the state, Peter became a boy who flinched from physical contact, and had no understanding of what a normal happy home should be like. Unlike Peter Razor, not all children were lucky enough to survive the abuse that could be found in state orphanages when Peter was growing up. Corporal punishment went unchecked, and Peter, an American Indian, also had the added disadvantage of prejudice thrown in. Eventually placed on a farm, his placement was not carefully monitored, and the abusive treatment with this family was never noted by the social worker who was suppose to be monitoring Peter's placement. While the Locust Slept, a Minnesota Book Award Winner, is a compelling, well written tale that reads like a novel, yet is sadly a true tale of a horrific childhood that was unchecked by the state that was suppose to be protecting him

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Razor while on a trip to Cochiti Lake, New Mexico. After talking for a while he passed me a copy of his book and asked me to read it and then share it with others. I read the book cover-to-cover on the trip home and was amazed that the man I had talked to had once been the little boy in the book. Mr. Razor was a kind and gentle man that never revealed the scars from his childhood in any part of our conversations. America's inhumane treatment of the Indian people is well documented. This book offers graphic descriptions of individual cruelty that was fueled by ignorance and prejudice. I don't know if many human beings could have endured this sort of trauma and survived to be so kind. Peter is a truly incredible person and I would recommend his book to anyone.

Like Peter I lived and went through total hell from a matron while I was in the same orphanage. After reading Peters book while the locust slept,I relived the same anger, as Peter indured.This book should be a must read by anyone,who plans on going into the socialwork field and know that this is truly a non fiction tragedy which happened.This is a story that took place a long time ago,but could still and does happen today.

Tragedy and horific treatment of innocent babies & children!.......2001-10-09

My father as well was in the Owatonna "orphanage" which he termed as an "intournment camp/prison"! Babies and children were treated more tragically at this place than you could even imagine. Babies died for lack of "touch" and nurturing! Children were beaten, mauled, and oftentimes died as a result of such treatment. Peter Razor cites an insightfully true story of just SOME of the horific experiences of babies and children in this most insightful book on our country's past (AND EVEN PRESENT) ways of "Social Services" treating our "lost" children!! A MUST TO READ!
