        Book Description

When Tina Basich grabbed her rented snowboard and headed to the mountains in Lake Tahoe, snowboarding wasn't even considered a sport ... yet. It was the beginning, and could have easily gone the way of many other sports and become dominated by male-driven competition.

But not with Tina on the scene ...

Comments like "You're pretty good ... for a girl" only pushed her harder to be the best and to prove she was more than just a token player on the slopes. Representing for women everywhere, she became a snowboarding all-star, started her own signature board and clothing lines for women, founded Boarding for Breast Cancer, and followed her heart, which led her on the adventure of a lifetime.

        This is her story.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for a Girl is entertaining and humorous.......2007-09-01

I have never been snowboarding and I loved the book. The author is an accomplished snowboarder who tells her personal story in an entertaining, personal, and humorous way. At times the book reads as if the author is talking to you as a personal friend sharing her adventures. There are some very funny stories in the book. I highly recommend it.

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-10-08

I read this after reading P3: Pipes, parks, and powder. At first, I thought of it as the girl version of Todd Richard's book (P3) and didn't want to read it. But I read it, it's not just for girls. Any boarder will enjoy it. Maybe the pink cover turns off guy readers, ha, ha.

3 out of 5 stars cant right good.......2006-04-30

Having graduated college, I think I was too well educated to read this book. It was so, like, 7th graderish. This book isn't very well written. It jumps around a bit, leaving the reader confused. For example, Tina talks about how she got a car soon after getting her drivers license, but then mentions that she crashed it a year later. So after reading about how she crashed it, she continues talking about how she drove everywhere. Fortunately, you can tell that Tina starts to mature a little bit as a writer near the end of the book. The other problem that I had with this book is that she tries to make women seem more disadvantaged than they really are. While there are 10x less professional women snowboarders, there are 10x as many male snowboarders, so it all evens out. Women have been a big part of snowboarding since it's inception, so I am therefore not convinced of her adversity. She does get credit back, though, because of her participation in the Boarding for Breast Cancer program. Overall, I'd skip this book and read "Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder" if you are into the "Action" sports books or "Swimming to Antarctica" if you want a women-pushing-the-sport type of book.

        5 out of 5 stars Beginner Snowboarder.......2005-02-26

This book is awesome. I opened it and finished it in its entirety in one sitting. It was such an exciting read. I just recently started snowboarding and am totally psyched about it. Tina's changes in life are definitely relatable. She is an inspiration to me because there are so many girls who side-track themselves due to heartbreaking, intellectually debased boys. I've seen it happen all too often and has happened to me as well. To stay focused on your own goals and not let life get in the way is so difficult. Guys seem to have no problem doing it, but she proved that girls can pull it together too.
oh yeah, the foo fighters suck.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for an Autobiography.......2004-02-10

I don't know anything about snowboarding and wasn't especially interested in it, but the title of this book caught my attention. God knows I heard "pretty good for a girl" often enough when I was growing up. Once I started Tina Basich's book, I was hooked.

She tells of growing up in a Sacramento suburb and going to an alternative school where art and music were stressed. Her parents kept the TV in a closet only to be brought out for special occasions, such as the Olympics. Basich and her younger brother entertained themselves by drawing, composing and playing music, staging shows, skateboarding, and reading. By the time she went to high school (a public high school), she was accomplished in a number of fields and her hero was Nadia Comaneci.

Basich tells of discovering snowboarding, becoming a pro, losing a friend to breast cancer and organizing snowboarding events to raise money for cancer research and education, and having several close calls of her own on the slopes. She talks about competitions, travels, and romances. She has a easy-to-read conversational style and the book is filled with photos and drawings.

Snowboarders will enjoy the story of how she perfected the backside 720 over a 60-foot jump, as well as the descriptions of competitions and the name-dropping. And everyone who has heard (or said) the words "pretty good for a girl" will enjoy the success story of a focused young woman.

        5 out of 5 stars An Athlete's Journey.......2003-12-10

Ms. Heywood has written a compelling story of a female athlete (runner) coming of age. She presents her memoir in a straight forward manner and does not hold back. She had a sexual relationship with her high school coach. She presents her story with all the emotional ambiguity I'm sure it carried. Ms. Heywood later struggled with an eating disorder. Again, this is presented in a very real manner. Ms. Heywood is also a very gifted writer. I found this book a compelling read and it should have a wide audience.

Photographer Bob Elsdale's pink-curlicued piglet in Pretty in Pink: Why It's Good to Be a Girl! offers a myriad of specific reasons why it's far superior to be made of sugar and spice and all things nice, as opposed to slugs, snails, and puppy dog tails.

Through pinkly hued photographic spreads, Pretty in Pink: Why It's Good to Be a Girl! epitomizes girl power and piglet style. From a rub-a-dub-dub in the tub to an innocent indulgence of chocolate chips to rocketing across the sky and chasing dreams, we're reminded that:

          ·"A girl's best friend is . . . always her best friend."

·"A bit of indulgence is fine."

          ·"The sky's the limit."

·"Sometimes your best assets are behind you."

Leslie Heywood wants to be seen for who she is--by her family, by her coach, and by the boys in her new high school. Of the latter she writes, "They don't see me. They see some blank girl instead, some chick." A talented runner, Heywood quickly finds in the high-school cross-country team a sense of purpose, and eventually some authentic friendships among the group of guys, "long, gangly misfits" who run with her. But that's not enough--this girl is itching for greatness. Faced with family troubles and the pre-Title IX sexism of high school athletics, her drive to conquer her sport grows ferocious. She tears up the mountains in her Arizona town (in 110-degree heat, no less), she piles weights on in the gym "like they were dimes," and, finally, afraid of not being quite fast enough or fat-free enough, she stops eating.

The painful consequences of Heywood's relentless drive toward physical perfection are at the center of this heartfelt memoir. But the moments of exhilaration and strength that running brings to Heywood suggest what women--given the right support--have to gain from participation in athletics. Regardless of her missteps, the author, now a professor and bodybuilder, remembers the boon sport brought to her shaky teenage sense of self. "Running was the way I first carved myself into the world," she writes, "how I learned to claim a space, throw my shoulders back, and fly." --Maria Dolan

            Book Description

You are a girl. You are a girl and you want to show the world what you're made of, blood and steel and backbone, guts. So you start running. Running so all those eyes who see just a girl will know what you can do. Your legs take the hills, eat up the road, the sky, the birds, parts of your heart, strong through your chest and then your throat, stride by hungry stride. And you do it really well, too, you run and run and run. Better better best. Breathe and deeper breathe. Until the exhaustion creeps into your bones, steals the fire from your face.

Sports is the quintessentially American dream ticket out of an unhappy life. For Leslie Heywood, champion high school miler, running was just such an escape, her feet flying away from a childhood filled with violence and enforced silence. On the track she mattered, on the track she was certain of who she was. But the world of sports was still a world uncertain of whether it wanted to allow girls in, and Heywood ran headlong into the arms of her coach and then into a collegiate team whose standards for body-fat percentages and diets and training left every athlete struggling with eating disorders and serious injuries from overuse. She kept running, and winning, until she ran too far. No one knew how to help her or stop her. She almost ran herself to death -- until she had to learn to stop.

Today Heywood still loves the challenge of sports, and she has found a way to live with a more balanced relationship to her body and the world. But as she looks at the explosion in the number of girl athletes around her, she asks, "How can we make it safer for them than it was for me?"

With rare candor and tremendous power, Heywood's story reveals what is at stake for a generation of girls who have come of age since Title IX prohibited discrimination against women in federally funded school athletics. Pretty Good for a Girl explores why girls need and want to participate in the American dream of competition and individual achievement; it also reveals the obstacles they still face -- such as traditional ideas about what girls should be, which disfigure their competitive spirit and limit their potential. Heywood's gripping memoir brings the untold story of female athletic experience to vibrant life. She gives us a road map of possibilities, a story of mistakes, courage, and determination that points to more positive ways for girls to experience themselves in the world of sport that is fast becoming their own.

            5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2004-04-19

I couldn't put it down. I literally read it cover to cover in less than a day. It was an honest look into her life that was absoltely brilliant. It's the best book I've read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars very true to life, a must read.......2003-10-14

This is a wonderful book. It may be a bit deep for some people (judging from one of the reviews), but go ahead and jump right in as long as you're not afraid to think outside of the box. I have been a female athlete since I was 8 years old, and totally understood everything Heywood writes about. Performing... the drive to make a name for yourself... the way life can seem to get out of control when you're trying so hard to control it... this book is very true to life. I really think any parent of a hard-core athlete should read this; it just might help them understand where their daughter is coming from.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent story about one girl's need to be #1........1999-08-18

I suggest every father or mother who has a young girl interested in sports read this book. It is apparent everyone can take something away from Leslie's mistakes and triumphs. She has written a clear, captivating and disturbing memior. It is truly an eye opener and a page turner. Leslie, "Keep on Rocking in a Free World."

5 out of 5 stars A memoir of a true champion and a role model.......1999-03-01

I am a 17 year old girl and a distance runner on my high school track team. I found Leslie Heywood's book to be an abosutley incredible memoir that touches the soul. There are so few people in this world with the drive, determination and dedication to make themselves the absolute best they can be. It is obvious that Heywood has the true heart of a champion, that not only made it in the world of athletics but struggled and conquered things like sexual harrassment, (and just harassment in general), bulemia, the tourturous colligate track life, and made it through all of it to write an extremly powerful and well written novel. She is a role model to the girl athletes who strive to do what she did.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Annoying for a Girl.......1999-02-19

I am the same age as the author of this book. I graduated from a high school a few miles from the one she attended. I should have enjoyed this book more than I did. I found Ms. Heywood's prose style irritating: "It is 4pm. I am writing a customer review for Amazon. My feet are cold but I do not put socks on. Breathe, deeply breathe." One sentence in the book simply reads "My legs are big in the world." In the world? As opposed to Mars? Annoying prose style aside, I felt that the book lacked a truthful core. I feel that the author presented herself in a positive but not entirely honest light. Did she abuse drugs as a teenager? Was she promiscuous? Though she was taken advantage of by a reptilian coach, one wonders how impaired this girl's judgment was. I did not get a strong sense of Ms. Heywood as a person, of the time and place in which the events of the book occurred, of the other people in her life, or of the particular difficulties women athletes face. For me "Pretty Good for a Girl" was not a very successful memoir.

This is the only good advice I gained from this book.
Also, to much focus on existing homes rather than new construction.

2 out of 5 stars Decent, but not great.......2002-02-22

This book may be slightly better than two stars, but with all of the overly enthusiastic reviews below, some balance is needed.

For starters, this book is very brief - barely over 100 pages not including appendices - and can easily be read in two sittings. Largely an overview with little detail. Thus, you're better off checking it out of a library than buying it for a long term reference.

It also unbalanced/biased - it is obviously written by a realtor. For example, it does not address the issues concerning buying vs. renting and dogamatically assumes that buying is always a great move. While buying a home is usually a great investment, more of the risks of buying need to be brought up.

More annoyingly, the book makes real estate agents (buyer reps) out to be white knights. Untrue! From my experience, there are far more bad ones than good ones and finding a sharp, diligent agent can be a real chore. And the authors claim that it is in your agent's best interest to be patient and find you the best house possible. Also untrue! It is in your agent's best interest to get you to buy ASAP with as little of their time invested as possible. Understanding the players and their motivations is key in the home buying process, and this book just isn't honest enough in that regard.

It may be worth a trip to the library, but not a purchase. Of the four home buying books I read, "The Unoffical Guide to Buying a Home" was the best. More comprehensive and honest.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy a house until you read this book!.......1999-06-14

I saw the author on a local TV talk show and after hearing her straightforward advice and encouragement for the single woman thinking of buying a house, I purchased the book. I'm just starting out on my house search, but thanks to the advice in this book I know I'm going about it in the right (and smart) way. I'll be a home-owner soon!

5 out of 5 stars Rare straight forward help from someone on the "inside".......1999-05-29

I recently bought three books to help me purchase my home. I wanted a home to be proud of, but I wanted also to save money if possible by buying the home below market value. This book was the best by far. I believe I saved somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 by being more "aware". It was very direct...totally useful. The de-bunking of the real estate industry was invaluable. I have passed this book to my son who will be in the market soon.

                        5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!.......1999-03-03

A quick, easy read and a wonderful reference for all home buyers. I zipped through it in an evening but have referred to it many times since I began my search for a new home.

4 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Look at Life as an Actor.......2006-02-08

Really, this book should be on every aspiring actors bookself. If you are considering becoming an actor, nothing can be substituted for taking classes and seeing if you really like doing it, but in terms of really getting an idea of what that life is like and what to expect, biographies are essential and this is one of the Kings of them all.

The book really is an autobiography, but being that pretty much his entire life was spent in show business, its a good guide as to what to do and how to overcome the many and constant rejections involved in a life in the business.

Seriously, this really is a must read.

3 out of 5 stars Very interesting read.......2002-12-23

I enjoyed this book, if only for the humor and perserverance shown by Mr. Grodin.

I think it should be on the syllabus of every entry level acting class.

My brother is contemplating going to film school, and I've already sent him his own copy.

                        5 out of 5 stars depressing.......1998-09-23

This book is depressing for aspiring actors, in that it shows how much SHEER LUCK is required to make it as an actor. My conclusion is don't go into acting unless a close relative happens to be a big Hollywood name (Nicholas Cage would be flipping burgers now if his Uncle Francis Coppola hadn't cast him in a number of his movies, to give one of numeruos examples). Grodin himself said in a subsequent book, that actors read this one and thought "Well, if Grodin made it, I can." And he said, "What my book showed you is that the odds are against you making it."

                        Book Description

Diane Watt sets aside the conventional hiatus between the medieval and early modern periods in her study of women's prophecy, following the female experience from medieval sainthood to radical Protestantism. The English women prophets and visionaries whose voices are recovered here all lived between the twelfth and the seventeenth centuries and claimed, through the medium of trances and eucharistic piety, to speak for God. They include Margery Kempe and the medieval visionaries, Elizabeth Barton (the Holy Maid of Kent), the Reformation martyr Anne Askew and other godly women described in John Foxe's Acts and Monuments, and Lady Eleanor Davies as an example of a woman prophet of the Civil War. The strategies women devised to be heard and read are exposed, showing that through prophecy they were often able to intervene in the religious and political discourse of the their times: the role of God's secretary gave them the opportunity to act and speak autonomously and publicly. Winner of Foster Watson Memorial Gift for 1998.DIANE WATT is Professor of English at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

5 out of 5 stars The most important new book about women visionaries.......1999-06-15

This groundbreaking, scholarly and beautifully-written volume argues for a tradition in women's religious prophecy from the Middle Ages into the modern era. It includes detailed studies of Margery Kempe, Elizabeth Barton, Anne Askew, and Lady Eleanor Davies. It is essential reading for students and scholars working in the fields of literature, history, theology, and women's studies. I recommend anyone working in these areas to buy it.
