Book Description
Nat Turner's name rings through American history with a force all its own. Leader of the most important slave rebellion on these shores, variously viewed as a murderer of unarmed women and children, an inspired religious leader, a fanatic--this puzzling figure represents all the terrible complexities of American slavery. And yet we do not know what he looked like, where he is buried, or even whether Nat Turner was his real name. In Nat Turner: A Slave Rebellion in History and Memory, Kenneth S. Greenberg gathers twelve distinguished scholars to offer provocative new insight into the man, his rebellion, and his time, and his place in history. The historians here explore Turner's slave community, discussing the support for his uprising as well as the religious and literary context of his movement. They examine the place of women in his insurrection, and its far-reaching consequences (including an extraordinary 1832 Virginia debate about ridding the state of slavery). Here are discussions of Turner's religious visions--the instructions he received from God to kill all of his white oppressors. Louis Masur places him against the backdrop of the nation's sectional crisis, and Douglas Egerton puts his revolt in the context of rebellions across the Americas. We trace Turner's passage through American memory through fascinating interviews with William Styron on his landmark novel, The Confessions of Nat Turner, and with Dr. Alvin Poussaint, one of the "ten black writers" of the 1960s who bitterly attacked Styron's vision of Turner. Finally, we follow Nat Turner into the world of Hollywood. Nat Turner has always been controversial, an emblem of the searing wound of slavery in American life. This book offers a clear-eyed look at one of the best known and least understood figures in our history.

Book Description
Originally published in 1885, Italian Popular Tales is a fascinating trove of fairy tales, legends, ghost stories, nursery tales, and jests, and other oral accounts that were collected, recorded, translated, and annotated by Thomas Crane, the first folklorist to bring the riches of Italian oral tradition to the English-speaking world. Collectors in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries unearthed a wealth of stories from around the world and published them in English translations for the delight of general readers, young and old. Sadly, most of these anthologies have long been out of print. Italian Popular Tales brings back to life this key anthology of traditional tales from the golden age of folklore discovery. Crane's monumental achievement illustrates the enormous scope of his research, incomparable to other collections in the English language. In this modern edition, Crane's love for his work shines through the scholarship just as it did more than a century ago. The volume presents a virtually unaltered edition of this classic work that is enhanced by an authoritative Introduction by Jack Zipes. This insightful essay discusses the significance of the collection and its original collector; the original collector's methodology and translation practices; and the original period context. Certain to be of interest to folklorists, this classic collection is also meant to delight and amuse readers, whether a parent, storyteller, teacher, student, scholar, or just someone who enjoys original stories and authentic folk wisdom.

Book Description
In this fun and fact-filled book, Wally Conway gives you the knowledge needed to use the home inspection to bring comfort to the home buying experience. Whether your role in real estate is as homebuyer, seller, lawyer, lender, builder, or REALTOR, you need to read this book!
Quite simply, this is the most useful book ever written on the subject of home inspection. Wally Conway is the only home inspector ever to author a book on the interaction and relationships of all the people needed to close the contract. This is an essential read for everyone connected to real estate.
Customer Reviews:
I WANT MY MONEY BACK.......2006-08-31
This book is improperly titled. It should read, "The Clueless Home Inspector." If I could just get back the money I wasted on this piece of propaganda. Wally, the author, believes it is his job to be a deal closer as well as a home inspector. Guess what, Wally, you are supposed to keep your nose out of "the deal" and offer nothing but an objective description of the property inspected. It is not an inspectors job to help the deal close. Wally says that "code" is a four letter word that should never be brought up during an inspection. Sorry Wally, but there are many times that current codes should be brought up for reference to life safety issues in structures. Wally says he likes to take his clients up on the roof with him for roof inspections. Wally isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Wally says there is no reason to tell a client that there is anything wrong with an old ungrounded two hole electrical system. Gee, Wally, have you ever looked at the plug-in cords to the electrical appliances in your home and office? That third thingy muhjigy on top of the plug-in is the ground, Wally. People like to use them, Wally. And when they buy a house that has only two hole receptacles, and you didn't let them know the ramifications, they get pissed off, Wally. Wally tells a story about how brave he was to go back on a re-inspect of a repaired bathroom floor, wherein he had to crawl through 6 inches of water to do the re-inspect because it had rained since the last time he was there. He crawled out soaking wet and told the new owner that everything was fine with the repair. HEY WALLY, you crawled through 6 inches of water, buddy, EVERYTHING WASN'T FINE, WALLY. It must be impossible to sue a home inspector in Florida. Wally would loose his shirt in Oregon if he pulled this crap. I'll tell you what, buy this book if you want to know how to be the seller and realtors best friend, and If you don't really care about the buyer, or your reputation as an inspector. And hey, Wally, you missed your calling, buddy, you should have been a realtor. If I could just get my money back. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this BS.
A must read for homeowners and realtors and more..........2006-06-02
If you want a positive home inspection experience this is the book for you. It is a positive tool for realtors and their customers to see the process in a new and different light. I have a new attitude that a home inspection can be a rewarding experience for everyone involved and not an experience to dread. In his book Wally shows us how to make the inspection a positive and a "deal-maker" instead of a negative "deal-breaker"
Thank you for this insight.
From Experience.......2004-12-21
Secrets of the Happy Home Inspector is a "must read" for all present or future Home Inspectors. To me the most valued part of the book centers around expectations. Wally Conway gives real and understandable explanations as to differences between expectations and reality. Why is this useful? Most home buyers look at the home they have chosen as near perfect and it is the job of the home inspector to identify problems with the home. The home buyer is often saddened by our findings and not quite sure which way to turn. Wally then gives clues on how to "soften the blow" by putting the home buyer at ease through non-alarmest explanations about what is wrong, how it can be fixed and that all homes have problems but all problems can be resolved. After all, in the home buying experience it truly is "all about knowing", so that expensive surprises are not in the home buyers immediate future.
Fantastic !!.......2004-11-22
This book is not only informative and practical, but interesting and entertaining! Even though I originally wanted and expected a more detailed, technical book, this book proved to be more informative than I imagined. This is not a textbook on the specifics of home inspection process, but instead talks about all the "people" aspects - who should come to the inspection, how to choose a qualified inspector, the real reason why you're getting a home inspection, the role of real estate agents, and much more about the issues that blend at this point in the real estate transaction. Who knew there was so much going on during a home inspection? I loved this book because Wally Conway leads the reader through the whys and whats of the entire process with humor and smarts. How refreshing! Not only should every person buying or selling a home read this book, but every home inspector and real estate agent should, too!
A book on "Home inspections??" -come on get real........2004-11-21
A book on "Home inspections??" -come on get real. Why do I need to read a book about Home inspections?
I read this book NOT because the topic interests me, but because I had to. I am a professional speaker and author who teaches investors how to buy vacation homes.
I read this book to help my clients. When you purchase vacation homes (most often from a distance), home inspections are an integral part of the purchasing process. So naturally I should read everything on this topic to educate myself...
I opened up the book and started to read the about the "about the author" page...The author is a of course an experienced home inspector, but also retired navy pilot-- oh, double joy, not only was I embarking on a journey of overly detailed information on a topic I was not excited to read, but I had visions of TV's "Major Dad"...he's going to belittle me and yell at me in the process.
Well let me say, Wow! Wow! Wow!
Only Wallace Conway could have written a book on such a boring and dry topic, filled with with detailed information and made it interesting to read. I read it like a "I can't put it down, engaging page turning novel!" I even laughed out loud during many of the anecdotal stories. This book engaged me from the first page. I read this book from cover in one day!
Now I can see why HGTV Hired this guy to be their Detective Inspector...he's competent, charming And funny!
From the start of this book to the very end, Wallace fills this book with critical facts and logical and sometimes not so logical mistakes sellers, buyers, realtors and even inspectors make. He fills in the facts with poignant examples to paint clear pictures of every situation.
For me, he clarified the matter building codes. Wallace explained how when you purchase a home today that was built 50 years ago you cannot expect things to be to today's building codes. He used the analogy of the vintage T-Bird. Even though the T-Bird does not adhered to today's safety codes with airbags, antilock breaks, etc, it does not mean that you can't drive it. As long as the home was built to code at the time of building then it should pass your home inspection (but I still think that a good inspector should still point these things out to the buyer).
This is a book that I feel every single person who ever buys a home should read.
I have purchased numerous properties and hired many home inspectors. I thought I was pretty educated on the topic. Boy was I wrong! Thanks Wallace Conway for opening my eyes and for writing such a great book. Christine Karpinski
Book Description
The harrowing, insightful, and courageous account of a prominent man's struggle with multiple personalitiesRobert Oxnam was a high-profile, successful man: A renowned scholar and president of the Asia Society, he appeared frequently on television and traveled the world as a sought-after expert. But what the millions of people who'd seen him didn't know -- what even those closest to him didn't know -- was that Oxnam suffered from multiple personality disorder. It was only after an intervention staged by family and friends, in response to frequent blackouts and episodic rages assumed to be alcohol-driven, that he sought treatment with Dr. Jeffery Smith; the first of his eleven personalities emerged in a session in 1990. After years of treatment, he has integrated them into three: Robert, Wanda, and Bobby, who take turns narrating this remarkable, unprecedented chronicle.
Customer Reviews:
It's alright..........2007-02-11
Although this is an interesting book, i did find it challenging to keep up with the different personalities, so be patient when reading this book.
I'd recommend it.
Multiple Personality Disorder Story.......2007-01-04
This is an excellent book on multiple personality disorder. It truly takes you into the mind of someone sufferring from multiple disorder. A goof read!
Fascinating Read.......2007-01-03
This book, about the author's journey to understand and meet his different personalities, is well written and easy to read. It made me wondered how we develope our own personalities and become who we are. His psychiatrist offers an interesting and enlightening post script on dissociative identity disorder (DID). Lots of food for thought - an interesting read.
Well-written and satisfying read.......2006-10-08
Although I don't live under a rock, prior to purchasing "A Fractured Mind," I don't recall having ever heard of Robert B. Oxnam. Having now finished reading his book, I believe I won't have any such trouble remembering either his name or his story.
First, I'd like to say that I have deep respect for Mr. Oxnam for going through with making his story and struggles known to the public--myself included. This was a courageous move on his part and I hope there are no regrets for any and all involved in the project.
On, now, to the story. For the first section of this book, Oxnam told a lot of--what I thought at the time--standard family background, academic and work-related information, and showcased an obvious alcohol problem. I wondered if I was missing something or if they'd gotten the name of the book wrong. Once Oxnam began treatment and then therapy for alcoholism, things started to fall into place for me as a reader and I was amazed at how successful this man had become in spite of what I now know were serious mental and physical problems.
I've read the book and seen the movie "Sybil" and was expecting this to run roughly the same course: in-depth coverage of the abuse that caused the original and subsequent dissociation, tales of bickering alters and integration, and a somewhat tidy ending. Imagine my surprise and confusion when the trauma Oxnam had suffered was discussed about the middle of the book. I cringed, thinking that all the dirty details would be chronicled throughout the second half; I was wrong. In a savvy move, the abuse was mostly alluded to, with only a few key events mentioned (no salacious content here). What the reader is left with is Oxnam's basic reaction--as an adult--to what happened to him as a child nearly fifty years earlier. For me, this had a more powerful impact than had everything been laid out.
What surprised me again was that the story wasn't over after that. True to the title, this actually IS about Oxnam's "Life With Multiple Personality Disorder," and is told with honesty and a clear aim to show what living with the disorder is really like, including the ugly parts. It's about how the daily grind, work, marriage and family, fits into and is affected by one man who is now the collective whole of three distinct personalities. The story of Robert B. Oxnam, Bobby, and Wanda does not end with the conclusion of "A Fractured Mind;" how can it? He isn't "cured" in the typical sense of that fairytale happy ending, yet he does seem to be quite healthy at the end--in my lay and humble opinion.
Old China Hand.......2006-09-03
The movie Psycho is more entertaining and credible than this collage of repressed memories and reincarnation fabrication. If you start reading the book, make sure to bail out as soon as Baby appears. The second half of the book bears a striking similarity to the Seinfeld episode in which George fakes an arm twitch. George's doctor correctly diagnoses George's problem as a mere fabrication, and notes that someone who goes to such effort to fake a medical problem must be a very sick person indeed. A more appropriate title for the book might have been "A Fabricated Mind".
A couple of high/low-lights of the book:
· Bob's pathetic attempts to establish that he is not just your everyday crazy Joe six-pack. He is at pains to underscore that his mail-order doctorate was achieved in record time. His claims regarding unrealized archery potential qualifies him to the league of could-have-been Olympic champions if not for...[insert pathetic excuse].
· Despite Bob's claimed close association with George H W Bush, the only tangible link between the two seems to be Bush's acknowledgement that he never read an earlier book authored by Oxnam. I am hoping for Bush's sake that he exercises the same restraint regarding this book. At least Bush had the common sense not to permit his name to be used in the author's acknowledgements. I am not surprised that Bush (and other notables including Warren Buffett) have had no association whatsoever with the author since publication of this book.
Book Description
When a promising young actor from a famous entertainment family commits suicide, the faded star that finds him must confront the demons that caused the estrangement of their friendship. Tempering tragedy with dark comedy and dry wit, author Rikki Lee Travolta details a world of has-been and never-were actors struggling for survival in the underbelly beneath the glamorous society of Hollywood's elite. Actors once considered "Movie Stars" swallow their pride as they slide down the ladder of fame to "Movie of the Week Stars." One-time celebrities who try to leave the tinsel world behind discover there is little calling for former stars in the real world job market. Meanwhile, other would-be stars endure the comical exploits of a musical version of Anne Frank or starring in straight-to-video action films opposite professional wrestlers and rap stars who insist on being called rhythmic linguists. Voiced in a captivating first person narrative, My Fractured Life weaves together the powerful, funny, and inspirational story of a web of friendship that bonds second generation stars and adult survivors of abuse as they struggle for identity in an abyss of temptations and addictions.
Customer Reviews:
Narcissistic silliness........2003-11-29
I do not understand the notoriety of this book. My initial impression after 20 pages: here is a truly self-absorbed neurotic. That impression solidified after 100 pages. Repeatedly, the "writer" puts himself down , then self-exults in the same paragraph. He is clueless, but imagines his boring blather is ironic and honest. Schlock. I give this book 1-star because zero stars is not an option.
Not Complete.......2003-09-21
This was not a bad book. Only I felt at times things were missing or left out. I would of LOVED to of learned the the true indentity of "Jesse" for example, that part was disapointing. I was under the impression he was a cousin of John Travolta's. Apparently I was incorrect because no mention of him was made. Through the book at times was a bit colorful, I hardly found it shocking, or risque. I was hoping for more 'name-dropping" and details, it is hardly a scandalous book. The part concerning his Mother was heart-breaking through, and I felt much sympathy for him. Not a dull read but not as entertaining as thought!
cautionary and delusional tale.......2003-09-18
I got this book for research purposes because of references made by other reviewers to "hollywood stories". After finishing the book I just feel sad for the author because he clearly gets that he's not the "big celebrity" he so often refers to himself as, nor does he begin to circulate in the arena of celebrity in hollywood. His "stories" are self aggrandising though couched in self depracation. I can find no reference to the "hit" television series that made him a "big star" on any of the enterainment databases and he never mentions what network originally aired the show beyond an unamed cable network airing reruns. He trades on the tragedy of his friend "Jesse" who kills himself after throwing in the towel on an acting career that is sabotaged by the powerful celebrity family of his famous father who would never claim his illegitimate son. He candidly admits that his friend is a raging alcoholic but the real reason the guy didn't make it is the machiavellian machinations of some unamed hollywood movie star's family? The only reference to the author on any entertainment database is as an uncredited body double in the film EdTV. This poor guy "made it" in his own mind only and his book is the boring retelling of that delusion. I would say that this is an excellent book to pass along to a marginally talented high school theatre student living in the midwest as a cautionary tale EXCEPT that they might think that they too can be a big star like Rikki Lee Travolta and miss the point that he's just another wannabe with substance abuse issues and a big fantasy life.

Book Description
This book examines the religious authority of St Birgitta of Sweden, the charismatic moral reformer and controversial female visionary of the fourteenth century, emphasising both representations of her prophetic mission and debates about her authenticity as a medium of divine revelation. It illuminates Birgitta's view of herself as a prophet of moral reform by explaining how her Revelations depict her religious mission and place in salvation history, going on to reconstruct interactions between Birgitta and her contemporaries, including the significance of her prophetic authority vis-a-vis the priestly authority of her male clerical associates. Finally, it analyses arguments about women's suitability for mediating the divine word in posthumous attacks and defences of her claims to prophesy.Through a close examination of Birgitta's lengthy Revelations, canonization documents, and texts by her posthumous defenders and detractors, this study demonstrates that members of her audience perceived her to be both a vibrant source of supernatural power and a dangerous transgressor of conventional boundaries. Informed by sociological studies of prophetic authority, it contributes to our knowledge of Birgitta herself as well as to our understanding of the dynamics of women's spiritual authority. Professor CLAIRE SAHLIN teaches at Texas Woman's University.
