Abigail Adams Is An American Heroine.......2006-08-31

I think everyone should know about this incredible woman and this biography is a good place to start. Everyone is always talking about (and writing about) the fathers of the country. What about the mothers of the country? Charles Akers does a good job of bringing Abagail alive.

Boring.......2004-09-20

I question whether it's Abigail's life or the writing of it that had me so bored I was looking around for a sharp object to end my misery. This was required reading for a history class. I have never read Adams' letters, so I can't say whether this accurately depicts her life from her letters. I can only say that I have no interest in reading her letters after this.

Let me sum up the book for you: Abigail married Adams. She wrote lots of letters. She had lots of babies. She worried about her babies. She worried about Adams. She worried about morality. She believed women should be educated. She got sick a lot and was medically "bled" a lot. She was alone a lot. She died.

Adverage Read with Interesting Facts.......2001-09-13

Akers does a great job of placing the information from Abigail's letters into a story, without directly quoting the letters line by line. A story is presented to the reader through the eyes of the First Lady. It was a required text for an American History class, though I did enjoy reading it. The story itself; however, can be deeply depressing while still communicating the accounts of the famous political family. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about the other side of politics.

A True Visionary.......2002-02-04

Over the last few years, University Press of Mississippi has released several book under their "Conversations with Filmakers Series." Past directors in the series have included Martin Scorsese, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean-Luc Godard, and Quentin Tarantino. I've read just about all of them, and I have to say this one, about American independent film director Jim Jarmusch, is one of my favorites.

The book consists of seventeen interviews of Jarmusch ranging from 1981 to 2000. During that time, Jarmusch has released independent classics starting with Stranger In Paradise(1984), Down By Law(staring a young Robert Benigni-1986), Mystery Train(1989), Dead Man(1995), and Ghost Dog:Way of the Samurai(1999).
These series of interviews reveal some of the meaning and influences that helped shape those films.

For those who might not know, Jarmusch is not only a brillaint director but he is also a facinating conversationalist. In the interviews, he describes his backgroung starting in Akron, Ohio and his early college years studying abroad in Paris, France. As an "outsider" studying in a foreign country, Jarmusch was never able to forget that feeling, and you can tell that when you watch his movies.

What's fascinating about Jarmusch is his mixing of "high' and "low" cultures which permeates his films. In the interviews, he admits being obsessed with the Japanese director Ozu and, at the same time, being influenced by the TV show "The Honeymooners."

I've been waiting for years on a biography about Jarmusch. Although this not a biography(or autobiography or that matter),
it is an excellent introduction this director's life and work. I recommend it to not only Jarmusch nuts, but to anybody who interested in American Independent movies.

Wonderful for children and adults.......2005-10-18

A thorough, factual, story of the life of this remarkable women. Sarah Winnemucca was a woman ahead of her time in seeking justice and humanity for her people, the Northern Paiute, of the Great Basin. This book, for young adults, is wonderfully illustrated, including a timeline of her life. Teachers and readers will appreciate the references, glossary and index. This is the best introduction to Sarah Winnemucca for all ages. For a more extensive look at her life see Sally Zanjani's "Sarah Winnemucca," which is for high school and adult.

Concerning Scordato's book on Sarah W: it's readable but..........1998-01-27

I found the book to coinside with most of my research on Sarah. There are some inaccuracies, however. The statements on stage-appearences, and rape, to be general, overall and too sweeping in context. Sarah's death of TB is highly unlikely--food poisoning is more possible. Some of Scordato's terminology in describing Piute things and locations is inaccurate. And--Sarah would never, ever not be interested in the welfare of her people! "A 44 year old Sarah took little interest..." says Scordato. Hah! And--Sarah spoke five languages, not 2 languages and 3 dialects. I have Gae Whitney Canfield's research on that!
