Book Description
Sahin presents a new approach to the study of private pensions in the United States and Canada. While traditional approaches focus on the firm as the key to analyzing pension obligations and the impact of pensions on economic processes, Sahin takes the individual worker as the unit of analysis. The evolution of costs and benefits are then determined over the work life, which may include several jobs and membership in different pension plans. Because the conventional approaches generally assume no job mobility and a single employer, Sahin demonstrates, they fail to adequately reflect the actual status of individual pension benefits, the effects of job mobility, and the unequal distribution of pension benefits to individuals with comparable working lives and wage profiles. To gain a clear view of private pensions and their impact on workers, employers, and public policy, Sahin shows that an analytical model that takes into account the interaction of job mobility, inflation, vesting rules, pension coverage, and portability must be employed. By taking the worker as the unit of analysis and emphasizing the dynamics of pension accumulation, Sahin is able to properly assess pension benefits from the perspective of the individual worker who needs to make rational job decisions, from the point of view of the employer concerned with the efficient and economical use of human resources, and from the public policy standpoint where the issue is the overall effectiveness of the private pension system. A pioneering contribution to the study of pension benefits, this volume will be of significant value to employee benefit specialists, policymakers, actuaries, and financial advisors.

Indispensable If You Are Considering An MBA.......2004-05-22
The editors of the WSJ have done an excellent job of summarizing in a useable format the strengths and weaknesses, as well as technical information on the top 50 business schools in the country (and the 50 runners up.) The beauty of this book over all others is the methodology of asking top corporate recruiters their opinions of the different programs (some of which are eye opening and controversial). This more readily gives someone seeking an MBA the relative value of a specific MBA in the marketplace, not as ranked by some elitist academic survey.
Of course, all these programs are excellent, and I think anyone would find some issue to quibble with in the rankings or synopses, but all told this is an enormously useful and complete source of information. No MBA candidate should be without it.

Customer Reviews:
Better guides are available.......2003-06-18
Rankings in this book are based on the opinions of ONLY those recruiters that the SCHOOL ITSELF directs the WSJ to. It's very, very likely that the schools did not refer the WSJ to recruiters with whom they've had less-than-enthusiastic relationships. Therefore, throw out these rankings.
Read the BusinessWeek guide (most recent - I think 2002?). It's as up-to-date as it needs to be for current applicants, it incorporates a wider variety of information into its rankings (though - like all rankings - the basis is subjective data) and it provides lenghty narratives on the top schools (including international schools). Much more helpful.
Nice complementary book for the one from BusinessWeek.......2003-01-17
First of all, the school rankings in this book are much different from those found in the other, better-known book from the BusinessWeek. It's so radically different that it places Stanford behind Brigham Young and Wake Forrest. The rationale, according to the book, is that the WSJ is using the recruiters' opinions as the major measurestick, instead of the schools' reputation or average GMAT scores. In a way, it makes sense because what ultimately matters for business schools would be the quality of end-products, namely the quality of graduates after 2 years of study, which would be judged the best by the recruiters.
But this book does not have much detailed information about each school. For a given school, the BusinessWeek guide contains description that's approximately three times longer than what's in this book (I own both). However, this book is much more up-to-date. The BW guide was published in sometime around 2000 and it's pathetically behind the times (it's talking about dot.com things). So, I recommend buying the BW guide first, and then using this book as a complementary material, which would be essential at least until BW comes up with a new, up-to-date version.

Book Description
She walked the line between sinner and saint. But when she sang, she was an angel. Her career....came the hard way, after she battle a Virginia hardscrabble childhood and broke through the all-male barriers of Nashville to make America "Crazy" for country music. Her image....flouted all the taboos. Brassy, big-hearted, sexy as hell, she dressed like a cowgirl or a call girl, swore like a truck driver, and seduced men like a femme fatale. Her money....bought her a dream house and a silver fox coat. But it was too little, too late to erase the memories of mental breakdown and marriages-or avert the tragedies to come. Her men....were lady-killers-hard-loving, big-talking country boys who would hit the bottle, let her down and break her heart. Her music....remains haunting, earthy and selling millions....even though she fought against recording her hits, "Walkin' After Midnight" and "I Fall to Pieces," because they weren't "country enough."

This is without a doubt the best Patsy Cline biography one will ever read. It chronicles her personal and professional life in great detail. First hand accounts from those who knew her along with well-researched facts make this book a standout.

GREAT BIOGRAPHY OF A GREAT HERO.......2007-07-10
I actually purchased this book directly from Collins Press as a pre-order!
It's about time this unsung hero had a deserving biography written and Michael Smith was the writer who accomplished this!
Don't look to Dan Simmons' "The Terror" for the true story of Captain Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier - it's fiction. This is the book to read the true story of Captain Crozier's life and career.
The only other biography written about Captain Crozier was published in 1976 by the Government of the NW Territories, written by Mae Fluhmann titled "Second In Command". I only got to read it through my main library's inter-library loan program and the book came from a library in Alaska. I could not check the book out so I had to read it at the library.
Banbridge has not forgotten their native son - a memorial to Captain Crozier stands in the town square directly across from the house he was born in. Holy Trinity Church in Banbridge has a memorial from the brothers and sisters of Francis Crozier.
Superb book and highly recommended!
Forgotten hero.......2007-02-14
Francis Crozier made six exploration voyages to both the north and south poles in the 1800s. He traveled with and was respected by many of the well known explorers of his day such as Ross and Parry. Because he was an Irishman of modest means, he was passed over for honors other, lesser, men received. His accomplishemtns and fascinating history are brought to live in this well-researched story.

When Jonathan Waterman set out to cross the Arctic Circle by way of kayak, cross-country skis, and a dogsled, he was less interested in conquering the 2,200 miles between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans than in learning to live as the Inuit had before him (Inuit, for The People, is the name Canadian Eskimos prefer). Good thing, for the Arctic, as revealed in this candid and engrossing travelogue, is no place for jock-style adventure. Over the course of three summers, Waterman paddled through storms, capsized in 39-degree water, blacked out, and was bitten by thousands of mosquitoes, smoked out by exploding underground seams of coal, and chased by a grizzly bear. The land was so vast and empty that swans and bears vanished before him, ice chunks appeared as kayaks, and driftwood morphed into people in a disorienting series of mirages. Perhaps most challenging of all for Waterman was spending weeks at a time in this setting without seeing another soul. Under these circumstances, he had no choice but to draw on remnant instincts to avoid disaster, forget about time and goals, and to connect deeply to "the Earth and Its Great Weather," as the Inuit say. "Any committed adventurer eventually learns that equipment and performance are just a means to that greater end of finding your place in the natural world," writes Waterman, who proves he is willing to go the extra thousand miles for a moment of insight.
Of course, he also experiences moments of unparalleled serenity--caribou trotting out to his boat, belugas spouting around him, grizzlies on the shore--and creates warm friendships with the Inuit themselves, who have changed radically since their own days of traveling by kayak and dogsled. Waterman works admirably to understand The People without judging them, though he is discouraged by what he finds left of the culture he emulates--communities caught in a "depraved limbo, somewhere between paradise and tuberculosis." As with the Arctic itself, the Inuit turn out to be more complex in reality--and ultimately more appealing--than in mythology. Waterman's stark and satisfying account excels in its ability to grapple with the human condition while illuminating a mystical world inaccessible to the rest of us. --Lesley Reed

By dog, boat and will........2007-10-17
Jonathan Waterman travels over 2,200 miles across the roof of the World. He tells us about the people, places, and history of the land he moves over. Sometimes moving by boat and sometimes moving by dog sled he absorbs the culture, good or bad, of the Inuit life. Alone for weeks at a time he has to deal with the cold, the bears and the weather. Along with fear and loneliness. Sometimes sad, something wonderful, always truthful, this is the book for people who love history mixed with travel and adventure.
A great read - highly recommended.......2007-01-31
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author keeps you engrossed in his story through thick and thin. He admits his faults and mistakes and you learn along with him. I doubt anyone will not like this book.

Jon Waterman is a writer who belongs between the hardcovers. His explorations and introspection make for compelling reading.
Articulate Adventurer.......2002-02-03
Who was it who said, "less is more"? That's one truth that stands out in Jonathan Waterman's "Artic Crossing" - a epical solo trip of the Northwest Passage done without fanfare, without oodles of sponsorship dough. I liked the author's cool, understated writing style, the wry observations about his sufferings and about the Inuits. No hyperbole, none of self-inflation that is so common in adventure writing, this book is truly believable. A wonderful read.
excellent book.......2002-02-01
in Arctic Crossing Jonathan Waterman, Kabloona extraordinaire gives us a a great gift. This guy can write, this guy can listen to the silence, this guy can paddle, hike, take in the wonder and freezing cold andbring it back home to those of us all warm in our living rooms. this guy is amazing.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommend.......2007-04-04
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (3/07)
In 1897-1898 "would be miners ascended Alaska's Chilkoot Pass the Yukon River basin." But there were other trails that lead to the Klondike Gold Rush. All the routes were harsh but some were almost unendurable.
"George M. Mitchell was an insurance broker in his early thirties." George had always lived an inactive life. He would occasionally fish or hunt but most of his life was inactive. Lured by the adventure of the Klondike Gold Rush, George "chose the most obscure, arduous, and downright implausible route to the goldfields." It's as though he said to himself: "no one, not even me, would ever think of insuring a person so incautious as to try to reach the Klondike via the peel river system and, specifically, the Wind River."
Athabasca Landing was a small unassuming place before the gold rush. There were about 40 or 50 white men and about 200 Indians that came and went. George settled in for a bit preparing for the next leg of his journey. The party needed more manpower. When Craigie, a Scotsman, and Smith, a Welsh, approached George he hired them both. George enjoyed his time in Athabasca especially getting to know the people.
"Grizzly bears were quite plentiful, and when he was on the main river or the larger creeks Mitchell used to see one or two of them every day, grubbing among the roots of the willows by the stream-side. One time George shot a young grizzly bear and when Bonnet Plume found out he cursed him. It was unsafe to tackle a grizzly alone. On another occasion he saw a large, pure white grizzly bear. It reared up in front of him. One time when George woke up a grizzly was sitting up on his haunches watching him.
"The Golden Grindstone" by Angus Graham tells the fascinating story of one man on the adventure of a lifetime. Mr. Graham is an excellent storyteller and successfully shares the journey of George M. Mitchell as he makes his way to the Klondike Gold Rush. George Mitchell comes to life on the pages of this book. Many of the adventures are told with a humorous slant. Mr. Mitchell was a very brave man and faced many hardships as did other miners. I particularly enjoyed the tales concerning the wildlife and the Indians. I enjoyed learning about this special time in history and the men that sacrificed so much for gold and adventure. I highly recommend this book to fans of history, adventure and non-fiction.
Book Description
In the mid-1800s, George Back went on three Arctic expeditions with Sir John Franklin across the barren lands of the Canadian north. But unlike Franklin, Back lived to tell his tales in journals, drawings, watercolors, and maps. Noted writer Peter Steele drew on these sources, along with contemporary accounts, to craft this gripping tale of resilience in the face of incredible odds.
The book thrillingly recounts the near-impossible circumstances of these expeditions — the fights with the Hudson Bay Company, rations that failed to get through, even cannibalism. Back survived these horrors to lead an exploration of the Great Fish River, now named Back River in his honor. His return upstream, hauling his handmade boat up 83 sets of rapids, is one of the greatest-ever feats of heroism and endurance.
A gifted artist and mapmaker, Back was a brave explorer forgotten by history. Steele does him belated justice with this fascinating account.
Customer Reviews:
An exciting biography of an explorer too little known!.......2007-04-17
It takes considerable flair and panache to write history in a way that makes it read like a novel and not very many authors have that ability. Canada's Pierre Berton has it! Dava Sobel and Simon Winchester are certainly up to the task! In "The Man Who Mapped the Arctic", Peter Steele demonstrated his rightful claim to membership on that short list. Steele, a physician who has spent most of his life in the North and an arctic adventurer and mountaineer in his own right, has eloquently told us the astonishing tale of George Back, Franklin's undeservedly obscure and unsung Lieutenant and his astonishing exploits in exploration that rival Samuel Hearne's or Lewis and Clark's in their extraordinary scope and difficulty.
Steele's prose has painted a vivid picture of Back's working life as a Navy Lieutenant and explorer and the compelling setting in which the story takes place - endless waterfalls and rapids; excruciating clouds of mosquitoes or black flies; extreme temperature swings; backbreaking 90 to 100 pound loads hauled over strenuous ankle-breaking portages; the open water of Lake Winnipeg, Lake Superior and Great Bear and Great Slave Lake that might better be described as inland oceans when observed from the perspective of a canoe; changeable unpredictable weather; the dumb-founding athleticism of ten to twelve men paddling in perfect synchrony at 50 strokes per minute for hours on end singing, if you please, to provide a rhythm and take their minds off the numbing pain in their backs and shoulders; lost rations, near starvation and cannibalism; the stinging cold and near endless dark of sub-arctic winter camps; the political struggles, bickering, corporate fighting and espionage that occurred as a matter of course in the conflict between the Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Company; and much, much more.
Of Back's cultural indoctrination by fire upon his arrival in Canada, for example, Steele wrote:
"He knew nothing of the rival fur companies' years of bitter forest skirmishes, sniping from riverbanks at each others' canoes, occasionally taking prisoners, and resorting in extremis to arson and theft, kidnapping and murder - tantamount to open warfare." "Neither did he understand the cultural differences that might arise between himself and a disparate group of French Canadian voyageur canoemen, Indian hunters and Eskimo guides, who he expected would guide them through the most barren and inhospitable land anyone could imagine, among people utterly ignorant of intrusive Westerners and their strange ways."
In other words, Steele has provided us with an exciting biography of a talented naval officer, explorer, mapmaker, outdoorsman and survivor who has languished for too long under the shadow of Franklin, his considerably less talented superior. The Yukon News praises "The Man Who Mapped the Arctic" by suggesting that it is destined to become a classic story of Canadian Arctic exploration. I concur.
Paul Weiss
An Author Who Does Extensive Field Research.......2004-11-30
As a resident of the Alaskan Arctic, I find it refreshing to read a book by a biographer who does not just sit at the computer, or camp out in a stately library somewhere. Steele, a doctor and mountaineer, as well as a biographer, actually went out and retraced the distant and remote routes across Northern Canada --the same routes of his subject--British explorer George Back. He followed the exploits of Back on foot, and also by canoe, boat and plane, including a forced landing on a remote lake.
Steele also traveled to Back's birthplace in the Cheshire area of England, and the areas of France where he was held as a prisoner of war well before he reached he age of 20.
Much has been written about a contemporary of Back's, the courageous John Franklin, but much less about Back himself. Perhaps this is because Franklin and his 129 crewmen perished in a tragic search for the Northwest Passage. Steele's book should help Arctic enthusiasts learn more about Back, Franklin's Lieutenant on three earlier Arctic expeditions.
Back, who served in the British Navy as a teenager, and spent five years in French prisons, showed early maturity, a very hearty constitution and a strong will. He successfully explored vast areas of Northern Canada and discovered and traveled the Back River, including shooting its 83 rapids.
Steele, reflecting his medical background, notes that Back died in his bed at a relatively advanced age (for that time) of 82 years old. Back kept very active, and was also a fine mapmaker and artist.
Steele also provides a social and economic profile of England in the early and mid 1800's, to show the rather limited options for many bright and ambitious young citizens. Thus, Arctic exploration, despite all its dangers, became a way up and out from a rather entrenched power structure.
I could feel the inner drive of explorers like Back, Franklin, Parry and others as they sailed out of English ports, bound for uncharted Arctic waters, and expected to be gone for years at a time, with no way of communicating good or bad news, or getting rescued. Kind of like our space program at present, although we do have much more communication, but still plenty of risk.
Pick up this book like I did, during several months when the sun does not rise above the horizon in Arctic Alaska. Find a comfortable chair by a sturdy floor lamp, and call your Greenland Husky or other faithful dog to your side, and return again to the days of George Back and his Arctic explorations.
Earl
Great read!.......2003-11-13
We need more of this kind of book in Canada.
This was a fun read. The only complaint I have is the maps could have helped illustrate the routes taken.
#2 on Globe and Mail Bestseller List .......2003-10-09
An incredibly well researched book. The Man Who Mapped the Arctic is a must read for anyone interested in Canadian and European history or Arctic exploration. This is not dull Canadian history! Peter Steele's writing is witty and engaging.

Book Description
Ernie Lyall writes about the north like no one has written about it before: "The main reason I decided to do a book about my life...is that I finally got fed up with all the baloney in so many books written about the north."
Born in Labrador, one of 19 children of a Scottish Hudson's Bay Company cooper, Lyall grew up in a north dominated by white traders. After adventures that took him around the Arctic and down the Labrador coast, Ernie settled in Fort Ross in the Arctic Islands. He married an Inuit woman, Nipisha, and immediately became part of her extended family. Ernie writes warmly about his Inuit friends and family, and about daily life in the Arctic and the remarkable transformation of the north that has occured in the last 40 years.
An Arctic Man tells about life in the north as it is actually lived, by its native and non-native inhabitants alike; it offers a rare, privileged view of the peoples of the Canadian Arctic.
