Book Description
Since the early 1990s the countries of the European Union and Central and Eastern Europe have been involved in the process of reforming their retirement income systems. The principal objective of these reforms is to contain the cost of pay-as-you-go public pensions in the face of ageing populations. Many of the reforms involve greater reliance on personal saving and the development of capital markets to fund private pension arrangements.
The distinguished contributors from Europe and the United States demonstrate the complexity of pension provision and reform, and highlight the dangers of focusing on one particular model. They consider critical issues and debates about how to finance pensions, present evidence on the effects of pension reform on the incomes of the elderly, set out objectives to ensure intergenerational equity in public pensions, and examine different pathways to pension coverage. They also argue that recent reforms in Europe may have the effect of reducing the incomes of future pensioners while exposing them to uninsurable risks associated with private pensions.
This book addresses a pervasive and increasingly important issue by identifying differences in pension systems throughout the EU and Europe as a whole, and proposing various reforms and solutions to the emerging problem of pension provision. It will prove essential reading and a valuable source of reference for academics, economists, policymakers and government agencies concerned with the evolution and reform of pensions, and with social and economic development in general.

Book Description
Adam Johnson (1834-1922) came to Texas in 1854 where he engaged in surveying, stage driving and Indian fighting. In 1861 he returned to his native state of Kentucky and became a scout for Nathan Bedford Forrest and later commanded the 10th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment fighting with Forrest and John Hunt Morgan.
One of his most remarkable feats was the capture of Newburg, Indiana, from a sizable Union garrison with only twelve men and two joints of stovepipe mounted on the running gear of an abandoned wagon. This episode won him a nickname of "Stovepipe." He was promoted to Brigadier General in June 1864 but in August 1864 was accidentally shot and blinded by one of his own men. After the war ended, Johnson returned to Texas and became a successful businessman. He founded Marble Falls, Texas, in 1887. His memoir, The Partisan Rangers of the Confederate States Army, was first published in 1904 and was selected by John H. Jenkins III as one of the basic Texas books. One of Johnson's men, Thomas S. Miller, wrote this of Johnson: "Paladin of old was not more daring and heroic than this Southern knight on the field of battle. No man in the Southern army, no matter how high his rank, displayed more military skills. . . . He was literally the 'Swamp Fox' of Kentucky."

The Partisan Rangers of the Confederate States Army: Memoirs.......2002-10-08
At first I thought this book was merely a grandiose tale but as I began to research General Johnson I could not disprove any of the text. Further I found that General Johnson was even bolder, braver, and a much better leader than he claims. A wonderful book for anyone who follows the Civil War in Kentucky, Tennesse, Indiana, and Ohio.
Good Book.......1998-07-22
The title of this book is somewhat deceptive, in that this is not a history of the entire Confederate Partisan Ranger Corps. Rather, this is a good book that recounts the organization of Johnson's 10th Kentucky Cavalry, the little known actions that took place in Western Kentucky during 1862, and the service of the unit under General John Hunt Morgan. One of the good points of the book is that Johnson included not only his own memoirs, but war accounts written by several other members of the command. Another good point is the inclusion of a roster of the men who served under Johnson's command. A very good book for those interested in Confederate Cavalry and Partisan Ranger units.
this book is a great recording of history.......1998-04-21
this book has immense historical value. it has prisoner accounts of camp treatment. it has step by step accounts of escape attempts. and best yet, my ggggrandfather is in it.

Book Description
Autobiography has recently become a primary medium for cultural theory, at the center of debates about subjectivity, history, memory, authority and ethics. Through this collection of essays, Jan Campbell and Janet Habord expand the concept of autobiographical process to take into consideration recent work on the role of the intellectual, and the areas of cultural geography, historiography, and new technologies.

Worth the Price?.......2006-04-23
Good book for someone getting started in major gift fundraising. Also a good refresher for the old pro, but same information is availabe in other books at a significantly lower price.
How do you get a copy of this book?.......2005-05-02
I loved this book. It came highly recommended from another development director and I checked it out from the library. But I see that Amazon does not carry it. Where can I purchase a copy of this book?
A great resource for board, staff & volunteers.......2002-10-31
If you believe that the best fundraising comes from personalized stewardship, you should read this book. Sturtevant takes his years of experience in the higher education fundraising circle, and translates many of the best practices into a format that anyone can use. He offers a great understanding to the novice fundraiser (be they board, staff or volunteer) and really helps humanize an otherwise scary endeavor.
Even the seasoned fundraiser will learn much from his experience, though you may notice redundancy toward the beginning of the last half of the book. Skip over the stuff you know, and you will still be pleased with the outcome.
I've successfully used this book to help train members of my board and to aid in the development of a pro-fundraising philosophy around the office.
Excellant compilation of knowledge on donor cultivation........1998-11-03
This book was loaned to me and now I have got to have a copy for my own library! Sturtevant not only tells what he is doing he tells us why and starts at the very beginning. He draws extensively on other heavyweight fundraising authors so reading this book is really giving you the info from 3 or 4 of the top fundraisers in the country. A "must have" in any development office.

Interesting but you still need to do alot more.......2005-07-31
Don't think that by reading this book that you will close the last page go out there and start inspecting homes.
YOu need alot more information and you will need to read alot more books and do some proper training. However the book is an interesting read and you will get a few ideas on what you should do. it advises to get some interpersonal skills if you do not already have them. So I went and bought a few books on that, and it cost me over 30. But Im pretty sure it will help.
The book explains the different types of reports and abit about marketing, actually it flirts with all the aspects but does no get too deep.
Overall, its worth a read but just don't bank on starting up when you put it down.
A Good Very General Introduction to the Business.......2005-06-10
This is one book you should read before you go into business for yourself. It is not "THE" book on the subject. Instead, it is a general overview of how to start a business of your own, and only incidentally uses the idea of a home inspection service as the business to start.
Before starting your own Home Inspection Service, you do need to know about a lot of things such as licenses, legal aspects, record keeping, setting up an office, and this is all here. The description of most of these is rather brief, but it will tell you at least the general concept of what you need to do.
As for inspecting homes, this book points you in a few places that you should read and classes you could take. My own experience is that you should go to work for a home inspection service for a while to learn what the business is really like before you attempt to delve into it yourself.
NO help for starting an inpsection business!!.......2005-03-27
I bought a lot of books to learn how to do home inspections and become a pro home inspector for a new career. This book was one of the worst since the title makes you think you will learn about how to start and run a home inspector company. But the fact is that the concepts explained in the book can be applied to ANY business because they are so basic and general and have NO specific link to home inspector companies. The book is written by someone who definitely is NOT a home inspector and knows nothing about home inspections. Perhaps they know about starting a general type of business or company. The problem is that they just took general basic information and put it into a book that can be applied to anything and has no relevance to home inspectors. You could change the title and put any type of business on the title and you would not have to change the text inside and you would see the simple ideas in the book do NOT help you out. I do NOT think this is the right choice for anyone looking to be an inspector or start an inspection business. There are other books on Amazon that are far better than this one!!
There are better books out there.......2004-04-02
If you're looking for real, useful information on starting a home inspection business, or becoming a better home inspector this book won't help you much. It doesn't take long before you realize the person writing this is not a home inspector. Mostly filler, with very little content. The "how to start your own business" tips can be applied to ANY business & are very basic. I got so frustrated with the lack of information I just stopped reading it 2/3 of the way thru.
Good for those starting inspection business.......2004-02-27
I agree with the previous reviewer that said this doesn't have any how/what-to-inspect content, but I think the authors intent was to help those interested in starting their own business. I think the author assumes you have or know where to get experience/knowledge on home inspection. He even recommends some sites. This book really helped me get a feel for the business of home inspection and how/where to start.
Book Description
With home sales booming -- a built-in market of tens of thousands of customers selling homes everyday -- this is one of the best, no cash-required business opportunities around.
Customer Reviews:
Fill in the blank.......2000-02-14
This is a "fill in the blank" book. There is no author. They took their 'best team of business writers' to creat this book about starting your own home business for "fill in the blank" (happens to be home inspections in this case). Probably only 5% of this book is directly related to home inspections. The other 95% is covered much more comprehensivly by other books. You should pass on this one.
Worst book ever read.......2000-01-11
This book is totally useless to starting an Home Inspection Business. The author has no clue of the inspection business and generalizes all chapters. A rating of one star was generous at best. Do not waste your money!
The worst!.......1999-08-28
This book covers picking out fax machines in detail, but nothing about home inspection. I expected to find some information on training courses, maybe some information about the politics of dealing with realtors and owners, etc. It was all very generic. At one point it discussed how to start your own home business selling lingerie (obviously not well edited from the last version of the book). Don't waste your money.
Too general - minimal info on the home inspection industry.......1999-07-28
This book is a quick read - especially if you are looking for real information on the home inspection industry - in which case you can skim almost all of it. The book is fine if you are looking for basic info on starting your own buisness - i.e. getting office space, insurance, advertising, etc. However, it has no real information about house inspections. It really says nothing specific about home inspector licensing, training, technology, etc. Unfortunately, the title is a bit misleading.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, "King of the Keys," was born on April 29, 1899, in Washington, D.C. "He was a smooth-talkin', slick-steppin', piano-playin' kid," writes master wordsmith Andrea Pinkney in the rhythmic, fluid, swinging prose of this excellent biography for early readers. It was ragtime music that first "set Duke's fingers to wiggling." He got back to work and taught himself to "press on the pearlies." Soon 19-year-old Duke was playing compositions "smoother than a hairdo sleeked with pomade" at parties, pool halls, country clubs, and cabarets. Skipping from D.C. to 1920s Harlem, "the place where jazz music ruled," Duke and his small band called the Washingtonians began performing in New York City clubs, including the Cotton Club, where Duke Ellington and his Orchestra was officially born. By 1943, Duke Ellington--writer of more than 1000 compositions, including ballet and film scores, orchestral suites, musicals, and choral works--had made it all the way to Carnegie Hall.
We applaud this talented husband-and-wife team--award-winning illustrator Brian Pinkney and writer Andrea Pinkney--for making music fly in this fantastic tribute to a jazz legend. Andrea does an extraordinary job of translating music into words, with blues "deeper than the deep blue sea" and "hot-buttered bob, with lots of sassy-cool tones," while her husband visually interprets the movement of music as spirals, waves, and swirls of color, prepared as scratchboard renderings with luma dyes, gouache, and oil paint. Andrea writes, "Toby let loose on his sleek brass sax, curling his notes like a kite tail in the wind. A musical loop-de-loop, with a serious twist," while Brian paints those curling notes, the loop-de-loops, and the kite sailing up to the New York City skyline. Young readers will enjoy the rhythm and beauty of the story itself, and may even be inspired to give Raffi a rest and swing with the Duke! "Duke Ellington" continues to jazz it up.......2007-02-20
If the brilliant colors and impressive images don't catch your attention, then the amazingly written story of Edward Kennedy Ellington will.
"Duke Ellington" throws the reader into the early 1900's with its slang talk and direct narrative. The reader becomes a part of the story as the narrator tells about how Duke started out being bored by the piano, and then grew to love it when he heard ragtime being played. Andrea Davis Pinkney makes this a fun book for readers by describing the sounds of all the instruments with such detail that one could imagine they are actually hearing Duke's music being played just for them. I became enthralled with the vivid pictures depicting jazz as one might sense it if they had been there. "Duke Ellington" has won both the Caldecott Honor award, and the Coretta Scott King Award. This book is a good, fun, imaginative read for all ages.
Excellent read aloud.......2006-02-02
As an elementary school library specialist, this is my all time favorite read aloud. I utilized music/sound files on the web to have the King of the Keys himself accompany his biography. The text itself is a story to be read out loud. A teacher commented that this was his favorite read aloud and I believe a student favorite of all the grades I read this to (grades 3-6). Students were swaying, snapping their fingers, and just tapping away. The older kids didn't do that, but when the music ended, they asked for a repeat and I obliged. Hats off to you Ms. Pinkney!
Put it this way. Jazz is a good barometer of freedom. - D.E........2005-07-04
Being a relatively new reader of children's books, I tend to go about my systematic reading of all good picture books out there in a backwards manner. Case in point, Andrea Davis Pinkney. I first came across this writer, and her talented hubby Brian, through their lovely, "Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuoso". It was through that book that I discovered that the art of scratchboard (remember having to do those in elementary school?) can produce some truly fabulous picture book art. After reading "Ella" I doubled back and found her 1999 Caldecott Honor winning baby, "Duck Ellington". The book that started it all. Also using scratchboard (and without relying on fictional talking felines ala "Ella") the book is a whirlwind biography of one of the world's jazzy greats. There are tons of picture books about jazz musicians out there today. Only one, however, has garnered both the Coretta Scott King Award and the Caldecott Honor.
In this tale we meet Duke from his baseball playing days in Washington, D.C. Children everywhere will sympathize when Duke decides that learning to play the piano is a waste of his time and that he'd much rather be out and about with his friends. Fast forward a couple years and an older pool shooting Duke hears the sweet sounds of ragtime for the very first time. Suddenly the piano doesn't sound so lame, and Duke teaches himself the rudiments of it immediately. Over time, his particular style and talents get him jobs in clubs and cabarets and at last he forms his own band. From here on in the book's a whirlwind series of visits to places like the Cotton Club (which I think illustrator Brian Pinkney probably failed to base after the real club itself) and, at long last, New York's Carnegie Hall in 1943. A matter-of-fact bio at the back as well as a complete bibliography of sources (well done there) round out this lively encapsulation of a life.
Kids are often assigned biographies in school, and "Duke Ellington" has the advantage of being both interesting and filled to the brim with sources and facts. The story is as lively as Ms. Pinkney could make it, often going into deep descriptions of individual players' talents in the Duke's band. The art is lovely as well. Using luma dyes, gouache, and oil paint and then rendering it in a scratchboard style, there's a real throbbing beauty to some of these paintings. In a final picture Duke conducts his band in a purple suit and the notes of the players curl out as almost iridescent swirls and waves. Altogether lovely.
In many ways, the book's going to be a bore to those kinds who've never heard a jazz note in their lives and don't understand the importance. If at all possible, try finding a copy of that incredibly amazing film "Cabin In the Sky" and showing it to the kids and THEN give them this book. The movie's worth checking out and Duke (with his orchestra) is wonderful in it.
Though this is perhaps not my favorite jazz picture book out there (I've still some very fond feelings for "Charlie Parker Played Be Bop") it's still quite a wonder and worth checking out. A necessary addition to any well-rounded children's biography section of their local library.
Singin' and Swingin'.......2004-09-03
Edward Kennedy Ellington, who preferred being called Duke, didn't like playing the piano at first. As the book made out, he considered piano lessons a chore, although it doesn't directly say this in the text. The boring "umpy-dumpy" noises that the piano made when he hit the keys made him soon quit lessons so he could pursue the interests of a regular boy. It would be a couple of years later until Duke would start practicing piano once more.
In what looks like a pool hall, Duke discovers a new way of playing piano. His discovery is ragtime. The ragtime music isn't boring and repetitve as the type of music he had practiced as a boy. This music gives of a rythmical sensation throughout the body. Duke is soon in love with the piano. And he starts practicing with the little knowledge of the piano he has. He is soon good enough to have his own band and becomes a frequent performer at the Cotton Club. Duke records many hit songs in his life and becomes known as "The King of the Keys".
Pinkney's unusually good painting are very enjoyable and I really like the way that the musical chords showed up to let the reader know that music was being played.
An outstanding picture book biography!.......2001-09-04
This beautiful picture book biography recounts the life and career of jazz musician, Edward Kennedy Ellington -- better known to all as the Duke.
When the Duke's parents enrolled him in piano lessons for the very first time, he flat out did not want to go. At that time he had visions of playing baseball; but his parents insisted that he learn to play the piano. The music lessons were slow and not a lot of fun. It wasn't long before he quit taking lessons altogether and kissed the piano goodbye. Little did he know then that the melodious rhythms of Ragtime would draw him back to this instrument again and lead to his success as a great musician, composer, and orchestra leader!
Andrea Davis Pinkney does an outstanding job sharing the Duke's story with young readers. Her husband, Brian Pinkney, matches her wonderful text with vibrate illustrations, which translate the Duke's music into a series of bold colored spirals, waves, curls, and swirls that literally leap off of the pages of the book! Without a doubt, this husband and wife collaboration will guide readers in appreciating the rhythm and beat of the Duke's life and music. This book is truly a musician's delight!

Candid Writing.......2007-03-25
This is the most candid writing I have seen in a long time. I found this book difficult to put down. Makes the reader feel a personal kinship with the writer. Takes you through his personal life and growth as a Shaman and medium. I would highly recommend it to others.
