Book Description
To others, he was the American President, one of the most powerful men in the world, presiding over one of the most horrific wars in history. But to Julia Taft, he was Tad Lincoln's father. Invited to the White House to watch over her two brothers, who were playmates of the Lincolns' sons, Julia had an intimate perspective on the First Family's home life, which she describes with charm and candor in this book. A rare look behind the public facade of the great man, Julia's affectionate account of the Lincolns at home is rich with examples of the humor and love that held the family together and that helped the President endure the pressures of governing a nation divided.
Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln often expressed their regret at not having a daughter of their own. Julia Taft thus enjoyed a special place in their lives, and her memoir reveals the warmth she elicited from the couple. She speaks of her initial fear of Lincoln—the towering, rough-and-tumble backwoodsman—who won her over with teasing, and of her relationship with Mary, who was never really accepted into Washington social life and took particular comfort in Julia's presence.
A unique glimpse into the social life of the Lincoln White House, Julia Taft Bayne's memoir shows us the human drama played out daily behind the great pageant of history.
Customer Reviews:
Step back in time.......2001-10-18
If you want to know what Lincoln and his family were really like, read this amazing book. Ms. Taft wrote this book in 1931. She played with the Lincoln boys in the White House as a 16 year-old. Her descriptions of the everyday life of the Lincoln's, the White House and the times they lived make you feel as if you ARE there. It's an amazing step back into a time that has been written about by many others, but not from such a perspective. Truly wonderful, simple and illuminating.

Book Description
This index has been compiled as a quick reference guide to biographies of 9,052 professional and amateur artists active in Canada from the seventeenth century to the present. The artists represent 42 professional categories, from animation to topography. In addition to 8,261 Canadian artists, the Index has 391 British, 300 American, and 100 European artists, all of whom spent part of their careers in Canada.
Each entry provides the artist's name, date and place of birth and death (or years the artist flourished, if birth and death dates are not available), the nationality (if not Canadian), type of artist (major medium media used), and sources in which biographical information may be found. Several hundred cross-references link the various names used by some artists during the course of their careers.
Book Description
Everyone who has bought a home knows that an official inspection is no guarantee against unpleasant surprises, and that, ultimately, the burden to ask the important questions about the physical aspects of a home is on the home buyer. But buying a home is one of life’s most stressful, emotionally fraught activities, and it’s easy to see why many home buyers fail to anticipate the kinds of exasperating and expensive problems that can crop up after closing.
Written by bestselling real estate author (more than 1 million books sold) Robert Irwin, Home Buyer's Checklist levels the playing field by equipping home buyers with a comprehensive list of questions pertaining to all the physical aspects of a house that may not be covered in an official inspection. From basement to attic, pantry to lawn, Bob walks readers through every room, nook, cranny, closet and keep, asking important questions about windows, screens, doors and door frames, fireplaces, light fixtures, moldings, and much, much more. And, drawing upon his many years of experience in the business, he provides pointers on how to deal with each problem, including information on how much it will cost to fix, how to estimate its short- and long-term consequences, how it should impact on the negotiating process, and more.

Let Robert Irwin, America's number-one real estate writer let you take charge of your home search with Home Buyer's Checklist, a step-by-step, room-by-room, top-to-bottom guide that shows you exactly how to "precheck" a house before you make an offer.
Customer Reviews:
New Home Buyer.......2007-09-12
I agree, as its title suggest - a list of things you will need to know/ask before buying a house. However, it is still useful for those who have never bought a house before and do not want to be caught in a bad situation.
Useful, but ould have been shorter.......2007-01-07
As a first time home buyer, this book is indeed useful. I learned about things I would never have thought of myself, and some of the things given are useful further to detect when maintenance may be due on certain items even after the purchase. It eductes te buyer about some basics of construction practces which help evaluate the condition of the home. Reading it wil not eliminate the need to get a professional inspection done on the property you are seriously considering or making an offer on, but will be helpful on the first visit or an open house for the prospective property.
Whether this is the best book around on the subject: probably not. The author does repeat stuff and gets wordy at places.
Name says it All.......2005-08-09
Exactly what it says...a checklist for nearly every item you could think of that you would want to check out before buying a house. Almost too many details but easy to use. A good investment if purchasing a house.

Complete checklist for home inspection of houses or condos........2006-06-13
I own a very successful home inspection business in California. We use all of this authors products to train my staff since they are the by far the best products for real estate training on the market. We originally found out about these products through excellent book reviews in the local real estate publications. In the past I had contacted this book's author for some advice on different areas of the business. From that we learned the following details and decided to purchase the whole "Real Estate From A to Z" series by this author:

Great checklist to inspect any home top to bottom........2006-06-08
This book is designed to be a checklist to inspect a house or condominium and that's what I use it for. It covers every aspect of the home with great detail and enables me to make sure I don't miss anything.
The book is not meant to be a training manual to become a home inspector. Rather this book contains a very detailed checklist to be used by a professional inspector or a homeowner.
I found the sections were very easy to follow and understand. The book has all the necessary and essential components and specifications listed so I don't forget something nor overlook anything important.
So if you need a checklist for checking out real estate then this is a great choice. At $16.95 you can't go wrong and the information it has can save you a lot of money and headaches down the road.
If you need a book that teaches you how to inspect homes (rather than a checklist) then this book's publisher has inspection and appraisal books I found to be the most comprehensive on the market.
EXTREMELY basic, and not in a good sense.......2006-06-02
Aspiring home inspectors, look elsewhere. This book is exactly what it is listed as, a CHECKLIST. Don't expect to actually learn anything about the systems that make up a home. Maybe a decent buy for a homeowner's personal use, but definitely not for a pro or for a pre-purchase inspection. Hire a licensed professional when it counts. For something a little more in depth, I'd recommend Rex Cauldwell's Inspecting a House.
Excellent Book! We use this to train our home inspectors........2005-07-23

Great home inspector checklist for homeowners also........2004-10-02
Looking for a good, detailed home inspector checklist book was difficult since I don't know about house construction and repairs but I still wanted a lot of details to learn what I need to evaluate. This book was great because there are very detailed sections but they are explained in a way that even a beginner can understand. I went through my house on the inside and outside and found many problems and repairs that were needed. I had no idea of how much you really need to check in your home to make sure everything is OK or if something needs to be updated or repaired. Certain problems I found needed to be further evaluated by a professional contractor but at least I was able to identify the problems with the help of this book. You should get this book to check your own home since you will save a lot of money and time later by detecting problems and repairs before they get too serious or expensive - or dangerous!

Book Description
"... excellent... a detailed, yet simple, guidebook... numerous illustrations and extensive checklists add to the practicality of the book... provides a quick education on the essentials of the physical aspects of a home... On my scale of one to ten, this outstanding book rates a nine."-Robert Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist, Tribune Media Services. This home inspection book stands out-it's the only one that helps home buyers determine what they need and want in a home, and the only one that follows a unique system of checklists to help them find that "dream house."
Customer Reviews:
These checklists are essential to buying a home!.......1999-07-13
As a first time homebuyer, I was intimidated by all of the things that can be "wrong" with a prospective home. This book explains the essentials of everything on the extensive checklists. Definitions are given in words and pictures for everything you should inspect.
This is not the only book you should read, but I strongly recommend it as part of your arsenal.
Book Description
Most home buyers are unaware of what occurs behind the scenes during the purchase of a home -- typically the biggest investment of their lifetime. The author has taken time off from training home inspectors and conducting home inspections to provide home buyers with detailed information on what actually occurs during the home purchase process with respect to home inspections. This informative book helps home buyers better understand the concerns they should have regarding the real estate agent/home inspector relationship. Through checklists, color photos, and tables, this book helps buyers evaluate a home they are considering purchasing, as well as home inspection firms. Hopefully this book will help many home buyers be smarter consumers in purchasing a new home, or in purchasing their next home.
Customer Reviews:
a good counterpoint to the typical home buying books.......2000-06-19
This booklet is unflinching in its depiction of unscrupulous real estate agents being out to get you. The author gives useful information about what tricks you should look out for during the inspection process and in how agent-approved inspectors may not be looking out for you as much as they could be. Self-serving information, no doubt, given the author is an independent inspector, but it is good to hear the story from all sides.
After reading this booklet I knew what kind of inspections I needed to have done. I understood what the inspector would and would not do, and what the inspector could reasonably tell me and what they could not.
The booklet struck me as overly paranoid with regard to the lack of integrity of real estate agents. But this booklet (yes booklet, it is stapled like a magazine, not bound) serves as a useful counterpoint to the home buying guides written by real estate agents, which usually paint a much rosier home-buying picture.

Customer Reviews:
wings.......2005-09-24
I am definetly a die hard fan of the beatles since time immemorial and this conviction never cease to exist to this day. However, it is also imperative to know the musical activities of every member of the beatles after they disbanded, indeed there is light at the end of the tunnel after the post beatle era. One visible and yet subliminal effort during the post beatle era, was the birth of Paul Mccartney and Wings. This book takes you to the inner mind of Paul and his inevitable predicament to continue his musical career by forming a new band and having a new life with Linda. In this book you will also witness the other side of Paul Mccartney not as an ex-beatle, but as the band leader of the Wings. Moreover, discover the fraustrations of Linda Mccartney as a musician in her own right. I highly recommend this book to all genuine beatlemaniacs and die hard fans of Sir Paul Mccartney, like me!
The Life Of Wings.......2005-08-26
Garry McGee's Band On The Run: A History of Paul McCartney & Wings is a fine account of the 1970's musical output of a rock legend. McCartney's music with Wings is often overlooked and dismissed, but looking back, he crafted some of the most enduring pop songs of his career. Mr. McGee does a great job of chronicling the recording sessions that produced the music. If you a fan of Paul McCartney and Wings, then this book is worth your time.
Potted history of Wings........2005-08-03
This book really provides an overview of Wings' career. But it feels to me a little disjointed, like it is really just a lot of anecdotes and stories cobbled together from other sources, rather than a complete uniform work in it's own right. I also find some of the writing a little clumsy in it's phrasing and wording. That said it is an entertaining enough read for a night but I can't say that I learned anything new here.
The album and singles sections in the back are good to have though. There are some photos of rare Wings material throughout the book which are interesting, but it would have been nice to have them printed in colur in a glossy photo section of the book.
Twenty Years Worth of Research? I Think Not.......2005-04-18
As the back cover states that Mr. McGee is an 'authority on Wings", I'm here to tell you he is not. Errors are found on just about every other page ranging from:
Wrong dates given as to when sessions took place (Ram, RRS, McGear, etc...)
Songs being released when they haven't (Robber's Ball)
Songs being listed as recorded from one time frame when they were either recorded years earlier or later (When The Wind Is Blowing, Seaside Woman)
McCullough and Seiwell recording with Denny Laine in 1980 (sorry, didn't happen)
The interview as being described 'real' from 1976 where the reporter was asleep was actually from Australia 1975 and the reporter is a local hero called Norman Gunston who 'pulls pranks' on celebs even though the Mac's were aware of it. So in other words, that whole interview was staged.
I think the biggest crime of this book was to re-tell stories from one JoJo Laine (the 1975 housekeeper Rose story, Jimmy contemplating murdering the Macs, etc...) that she initially told to Geoffrey Giuliano. Come on, every knows JoJo can be trusted about as far as you can throw her and those stories are the work of Geoffrey and JoJo wanting to dump crap on the McCartney's legacy.
About the only thing this book is usefull for are the quotes from Paul, Linda & Wings collected from various magazines over the past 30 + years.
Nothing new isn't reported that hasn't already been told in previous books on Macca. He even missed a golden oppurtunity while speaking with Henry McCullough in 2002 about asking him to comment on the original Band On The Run rehearsal tapes from the Summer of '73 that Henry has kept all these years. He's the only one with copies and it would've shed light on how far the album was truly developed at that point and which guitar riff was it that got him so heated with Macca that he up and quit.
So to sum up... Skip this book and just enjoy the music. Maybe someday someone will get it right but not Mr. McGee!
The best history on McCartney (post beatles) around.......2003-07-19
This book hits on all aspects of wings. McGee covers areas that have had little or no coverage elsewhere including some of there less popular material. It also offers a complete discology, a complete list of every wings concert and set lists. The interviews are in depth and show Paul in a light that isn't always flattering. McGee is very honest and straight in his writing and has not smoothed over anything. This book shows how the band became so popular and also lets you see what led to the ultimate end. Very well written and very informative.
Book Description
WINGSPAN is an intimate scrapbook charting how Paul McCartney's band, Wings, became one of the biggest selling acts of the 1970's with memorable hits like "Band on the Run," "My Love," "With a Little Luck," "Live and Let Die," "Junior's Farm," "Jet," and many others. At the same time, Paul and his wife, Linda, a fellow band member, were raising a family at home and on the road. This book is a personal record of Wings' beginnings after the break up of the world's most celebrated rock group, the Beatles, through to the 1980's. Apart from a unique insight into the dynamics of a hugely popular band and an extraordinary marriage, WINGSPAN brings back memories of some of the wonderful songs and how they were written, recorded and performed.

Pictures In The Life Of Wings.......2005-08-26
Wingspan is an oversized pictorial history of Paul McCartney & Wings. The book starts off with some photos of the Paul & Linda's early days together in the late 60's all the way through 1980 and the end of Wings. Mr. McCartney provides the commentary that is sprinkled in between the photos. It is not the most enlightening stuff, but it comes across like Mr. McCartney himself, light, breezy and affable. The pictures are another matter. They provide a deep look into the McCartney's personal life, the band's rehearsals, tours and recording sessions. The book is presented beautifully and the end includes a discography and photos of all the group's album covers.
Wingspan.......2003-01-24
As a second generation Beatles fan, I truly loved Wings. It's a shame so little has been written about Paul and his band....until now. While I do wish more details would emerge about Paul's relationship with Denny Laine and Jimmy McCullough, I am grateful for Wingspan (DVD and book). If Linda had lived to help with this project, I believe she would have felt free to recollect both good and not so good times on the road. Because the Beatles legacy is so huge, I feel not enough respect and appreciation is given to Wings' legacy, not even by Paul himself! Perhaps in time, we'll learn more. For now, Wingspan is the best tribute yet.
Glimpses.......2002-12-31
"Wingspan" is a glossy book of photos for fans, combined with some scraps of comment by McCartney (interviewed, it should be noted, by his own daughter Mary.) It's good to finally get some information about Paul's Wings years. This is obviously Paul making his own case, though he is certainly honest about matters such as his frustration with the band's ever-changing lineup, as well as his 1980 arrest for pot in Japan. Overall, one cannot help but admire the bravely carefree attitude with which Paul formed this new band and made some spotty but often good music. Above all this book is meant to be a tribute to Linda McCartney, a defense of her role in the band, and an inspirational look at how a family man can combine work and play. Personally I would have liked to see more in-depth interviewing by someone more impartial, as well as interviews with other band members, most especially Denny Laine who stayed with Wings through the entire decade but is given rather short text shrift here. But then, I'm grateful for what we get. As Paul comments, Wings wasn't rocket science, it was just making music, and this is a fun, breezy book about a fun band.
Lewisohn-McCartney.......2002-10-21
Has Paul McCartney finally found the writing partner to fill the void created by the breakup of his liaison with John Lennon? If "Wingspan" is anything to go by, then he may well have done so. Mark Lewisohn, the much-celebrated Professor Emeritus of Beatledom, proves himself to be the ideal sidekick to Macca, collaborating with the Great Man on a wonderfully informative book that leaves no stone unturned in its effort to detail every facet of a fascinating period in the life of a multitalented artist. So vivid are the recollections that it's almost as if you're right there with Paul, Linda and their troupe of kids and collaborators. Lennon & McCartney were a legendary team, but Lewisohn & McCartney are a pretty formidable pair in their own "write". They should try working together on some songs...
The 1970's on Planet Earth with Paul & Linda McCartney.......2002-09-30
This book is literally like looking through Paul & Linda McCartney's personal photo album of their lives throughout the 1970's! The photographs, many of which have never been seen by the public before are breathtaking for any McCartney or Wings fan! I already have some favorite photos, such as the one of young Heather at a recording session for Wings Wild Life playing a Fender Jazz Bass. There is also a rare shot of Ringo Starr holding Paul's Rickenbacker bass on stage with Wings in Los Angeles in 1976. Another great photo shows Paul in the foreground while Linda sits in the background holding Paul's bass for him (bass sitting?). And one of the most amazing shots to me is one of Paul at the Grand Ole Opry in downtown Nashville. He is posing for the camera, complete with sunglasses and straw cowboy hat, looking like any other curious tourist to the few passers-by on the street that day! Little did they know that he's really one of the most famous people on the planet!
I have described just four photos in a book that is completely packed with photographs from the front fold-out cover to the back fold-out over with captions, commentary and reminising by Paul McCartney! This book is, quite simply, an amazing collection and a definite must have for all who love the music and legacy of Paul, Linda and Wings. If you haven't already bought it or ordered it here, Christmas is coming soon so make sure you put it on your wish list!

Book Description
Bishop William Carpenter Bompas was a difficult man, cantankerous, stubborn, and more than a little eccentric. He carried on his shoulders the deep spirituality of his own faith, the assumptions of his background, and the cultural aggressiveness of the Victorian age. He was a church leader who often disagreed with his church and ignored its advice. Bompas's life in the North offers insights into the compelling forces of religion and faith. In a new Introduction, historians William Morrison and Ken Coates examine Bompas's career, exploring themes central to the history of the church in Canada and to aboriginal-newcomer relations.
