Book Description
This revealing study examines the important, but little known, involvement of employers' and workers' organizations, academics, professionals, and experts in developing and reforming public policy. It illustrates the variety of approaches that can be taken to pensions by analyzing the schemes of seven industrialized countries: the U.S., the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Italy, and Spain. The book shows how these groups and conservative bodies work-in conjunction with government administrations-to run pension systems.
The study traces the activities of these groups, the forms of dialogue used, and the routes followed in the implementation of change. It reflects on how their work is "the hidden face" of recent pension reform and shows how various forms of consultation, negotiation, and public debate can ensure the long-term viability of systems.
It reviews the mechanisms and institutional structures involved in the conception and implementation of reforms, highlights common features, and evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of national social dialogue on the pension issue. At a time when pensions are a major topic of debate, this book is a welcome and valuable contribution to the discussion.

For People With Too Much Time On Their Hands.......2007-09-22
I have despaired of actually finding the edition of Sherman's memoirs which I own in the list of some 342 different versions of Sherman's memoirs which can be purchased through Amazon, perhaps because that edition seems to have been specially issued recently by Barnes & Noble. A few pages in is a copy of Sherman's memoirs which claims to tell the story of his life "down to its closing chapters," published in 1891, the year he actually died. I have a feeling that in that version, the last seven years were speedily covered by some hagiographer; in the book I own, Sherman ends with his resignation as General of the Army in 1884. Sherman held this post for 15 years, starting with the accession of his mentor and friend Ulysses S. Grant to the presidency in 1869. This is longer, I believe, than any other four-star has remained on active duty. (Winfield Scott was commanding general of the army for a longer period of time -- I think -- but he did so as a two-star.)
The late middle of the book is the portion most people who pick up "Memoirs" will want to read. It covers the Atlanta campaign and the subsequent march to the sea, the reason Sherman is still remembered by historians. I deduct one star from the five I would otherwise give this book because I don't think Sherman is completely honest after describing the fate of Atlanta. He admits he deliberately burned the heart of the city upon withdrawing from it. Subsequent cities which burn down, he claims burned by accident, in spite of the indignant tone and desire for vengeance which suffuses his letters from the same period, which pepper the book. Indeed, the reader sees that Grant, in overall command of the army at this time, was reluctant to approve Sherman's strategy of leaving Atlanta to wreak havoc upon the infrastructure of the eastern portions of the Confederacy, believing the enemy army to be a more appropriate target.
Another star must be deducted because Sherman attempts to compress the entire 15 years he served as General of the Army into one chapter. The second edition, which Barnes & Noble has reproduced, essentially is the first edition plus two chapters -- one which details the first 26 years of his life, and one providing a few anecdotes from his time as General of the Army. The first chapter of the second edition, describing his time at West Point and as a junior officer in Florida in the last stage of the Seminole War, actually provides much more useful information than the last chapter. Overall, while the second edition provides slightly more information, the first edition probably makes Sherman look better.
In Sherman's defense, there are perfectly understandable reasons for this decision. A new consensus about the meaning of the Civil War was coming into vogue in 1886, when he published the second edition of his memoirs. Sherman would have been under great pressure both official and unofficial not to discuss Reconstruction, the military aspect of which he commanded throughout Grant's presidency. Considering the way it ended, Reconstruction would not have been a flattering chapter to add to the memoirs, either. In essence, Grant and Sherman were defeated by the South, which succeeded in suppressing its African-American population through a combination of violence and political corruption. (The far less competent President Andrew Johnson is treated with kid gloves in the book, perhaps because he was a fellow opponent of Edwin Stanton -- whom Sherman loathed -- although it was his failure to take a hard line early on that made the success of Reconstruction impossible, in my view.) A person who didn't know this, however, would be left scratching his head and at a loss to understand why Sherman, who provides simply too much information (he seems to remember not only every trip he ever took for the first 45 years of his life, but the name of the ship or railway he was on and the precise start and end dates) for most of the book, suddenly seems forgetful.
One of the most interesting chapters in the book is the last chapter of the first edition, "Conclusion -- Military Lessons of the War." Sherman lays out all the information he can think of about how a late nineteenth-century army ought to be run, which is a lot. I have no doubt that for its time, this advice was spot on, and in Sherman's position, he got to put most of it into practice (although he can't have been happy about the size of the army, which by the end of his time commanding it was only a few thousand men larger than it had been in 1861). Another highlight is where Sherman is asked in 1863 for his advice on reconstructing those portions of the South that have passed back into Union hands; his lengthy letter sets out his view of Southern whites as a species of political adolescents who launched the Civil War because they have some sort of problem with authority (almost the opposite of the Slave Power Conspiracy view which animated the most die-hard Republicans). At any rate, although this book is far from perfect, I give it an overall positive recommendation; it provides much useful information about the Civil War and Sherman, one of its most colorful characters.

Thank you.......2005-08-14
I came across this book in my local library doing some research. During an especially trying time in my life, Dr. Alter's kind words and writing style saved me. After checking it out, and renewing it 4 times, I decided it was time to buy my own copy. I have suggested it to all my instructors and collegues, not only as a reference, but as a tool for simply making life more understandable. Thank you, this book truly saved my life.
Good Enough.......2005-05-16
If you've done some reading on self-awareness, and self-development this book will be a review of some basic principles.
The approach is very gentle however, and that is the most unique aspect of the book.
The reading is easy, and the organization of lessons presented is very well thought. There are some great insights into how to view aspects of ourselves. And some exceptional examples of how to relate to those that find themselves "in question."
I would not call the book "seminal" however, but I would say that it is worth reading. If you've done a lot of this type of reading before, this will be an easy read. If you have not, this could be packed with information for you.
I re-read this book several times now.......2004-07-01
I bought this book in 2001 and this is the best self-help book from all that I have, that I re-read it until now. Each time I read, it never fails to touch me by the stories and meaningful-quotations, all are indeed beautiful. And each time I intended to re-read just one story, I always ended up reading the whole book again. There is so much wisdom in the stories, excerted from Alter's 22 years experience as a psychotherapist. This is one of two books I will ever recommend to everyone (the other is: Thick Face Black Heart) as it will bring warmth to your heart.
What a beatiful book!.......2004-02-05
I found this book to be very different from many other books I read on spirituality and psychology. For one, as I read it, I could sense the deep love that the authors have for their readers throughout the book. This alone helped me in lonely moments when I would go to read a few pages and my soul would no longer feel lonely. Secondly, its power lies in the fact that one needs not believe in religious dogma or new age ideas to see the wisdom and truth of the simple words spoke here, that come as fresh water on a tired soul. This book is the fruit of the work of Robert and Jane Alter. Robert who has worked with many human beings as a psychotherapist for the past 25 years, gives us deep wisdom on how to live our lives in the fulfilling and nourishing way we always knew how but have forgotten. In this book, one will confirm what he/she reads from his/her own life experience and so know how true it is and be freed from worries and fears. It is a wonderful and very necessary companion for the journey we are all on, for how to stay positive on a difficult day of work, becoming free of our addictions, and finding true inner peace by discovering that that is our own nature.
""Truth is the sum of things seen and known with the physical eye (and our other senses), the rational mind, or the intuitive heart. Between the eye, the mind, and the heart we can know all of reality. From the densest form of energey , physical matter, which we perceive with the physical eye, to a more subtle form of energey, intellectual and moral truth, which we perceive with the rational mind, to the most subtle form of energey, spirit and spiritual truth, which we perceive with the intuitive heart, all of reality is available to our perception and cognition." (Page 80)
This book has changed my life.......2003-09-04
Robert and Jane alter are "true." Their words are direct and honest. Their style is comforting and open.
I have read "self help" books for 25 years. None has touched me like this one. Its blend of peaceful thoughts and real experiences leaves me feeling better every time I read it.
Read this book and know that each moment is an opportunity to live and travel on your own path.

Great book.......2006-02-28
This book was actually written by the man who founded the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Great information.
contents ok........2004-12-10
this book covers all the topics on home inspection, and its material is ok. except that there is no color pictures, all the photographs are black and white, some of them could be barely seen. that put me off a bit.
This book did not teach me anything I didn't already know.......2003-10-25
If you are looking for a book that will teach you a lot about real estate and home inspections then this is not the book for you. The chapter information and text content of this book was very basic and did not teach me anything I didn't already learn from other books that were much better. Inspecting homes is something I have done for many years and I would not recommend this book to any customers or contractors. If you know absolutely nothing about real estate then you might learn a few things but not too much.
Not a good reference book for home inspectors........2003-10-18
We have a home inspection business and I read many books on real estate topics. This book was OK but certainly not worth recommending to our inspection clients. Some of the topics discussed are irrelevant to home inspections - such as mold! There were many topics lacking in the amount of information the author provided. Maybe if you don't know anything about houses or construction you might learn a little bit from this book. If you have a novice level of knowledge about house inspections then you should buy a different book since this book won't teach you anything new.
Best book for home inspectors and home buyers.......2003-10-15
I first read this book 18 years ago, when getting into the home inspection business. I still find myself referring to it. Every good inspector has read this book and anyone thinking about doing home inspections should read it. The book is clearly written and covers all of a homes systems (the new edition has the latest topics), explaining how each system works and what to look for when checking it. It gives good detail without getting overly technical and is easy to read. Home buyers should read this book so that they are well informed about their biggest purchase and will know what to look for and what questions to ask when they find their potential new home.

Endless Scandal.......2006-07-29
No doubt, Steven Gaines knows how to write a page turner. I sailed through this book in record time, unable to put it down between chapters. It's written in a captivating, addictive style that promises to hold the attention of anyone who's remotely interested in the Beach Boys.
Gaines does, however, exploit the Beach Boys' cult of personality by emphasizing the seedy, the sordid, and the scandalous. Not in a mean-spirited way, but in a way that offers little attempt at counterbalancing the beautiful with the ugly. It's mostly one seamy story after another: Murry, the jealous, abusive father; the Wilson family's dysfunction; Brian's experimentation with LSD; Dennis's alcoholism; unscrupulous managers; marital infidelity; infighting among the Boys; Brian's psychoses; and the list goes on. Titillating stuff for some readers.
But for those like myself who have a high regard for Brian Wilson, this book may be somewhat offensive. Not because we deny the veracity of the scandals, but because they are the focal point of the story. Gaines's intention was to expose the dirt, and he accomplishes his mission in a way that will be entertaining to some, distasteful to others, but a riveting read for all.
Good book whether you like the BBs or not.......2006-07-06
I'm too young to be a core Beach Boys fan, but my parents, their friends, and many in their generation seem to have an affinity for this sun & surf sensation that this band inspired. I was somewhat fascinated by the story of their lives; the turmoil, the magnitude of their fame, and the challenges they overcame - invididually and collectively - to become one of the most successful and recognized bands in history.
More Than Meets the Eye.......2006-03-01
This book lifts the veil of "perfect hometown California golden boys" from the group and exposes the results of a dysfunctional upbringing and extreme overindulgence due to wealth and the ability to create wealth. Dennis hurtled through life, seeming to partake of every drink, drug, woman, and material possession that caught his fancy along the way. One has to wonder why Dennis, who seemingly could have any girl that he wanted, would bother to invest his time with the Manson Family girls, but such is compulsive behavior, I guess.
The real tragedy though was Brian - there are parallels between the stories of Brian and Howard Hughes. Both had so much money (or had the potential to generate so much money) that they could surround themselves with dependent syncophants who would facilitate whatever whim was desired in order to stay on the gravy train, rather than standing up and telling the truth to Brian (or Howard) i.e., that he was slipping into mental instability.
The photos in the book would have been interesting, but were of poor quality (washed out). Is that just in my copy, or have others been similarly disappointed? My only other disappointment was that I'd have liked to hear more about the girls of Wilson Phillips, but maybe that would be veering too far off the subject of the book, The Beach Boys.
pretty good, but.........2005-11-08
this isn't a bad book, it must be entertaining because i read it in a few days. it covers all the drama drama drama surrounding the beach boys. however, i felt like all this was covered, and written much better, in "wouldn't it be nice" by brian wilson. if you read that amazing book, there's really no need to read this unless you just need something to read.
Read this one first, then read "Wouldn't It Be Nice" .......2004-07-23
I read this book recently and thoroughly enjoyed it - Looks like Steven Gaines did a good job, extensively researched, and it reads well...but I don't believe some of it after reading Brian's book. I just finished Brian's version, "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and enjoyed that even more, especially after the preparation from the other book - I recommend reading both in that order.
I grew up in this time period, enjoyed the music and some of the adventures that went with it - I believe anybody else who did also will really enjoy this book, and Brian's book as well.
The title fits well - The father was definitely a villian, sometimes others, sometimes certain Beach Boys themselves.
The Manson family, the "Love" family, and Murry, no doubt about them being villians - and one of the managers in particular, the con artist who claimed to be a newscaster who had won the Pulitzer Prize!
It must've been frustrating, maddening when Brian refused
to tour and got so whacked out from drugs...Their attempts to
FORCE him to recover were extremely brutal and stupid...People
have talked about Dr. Landy's methods being "controversial,"
but the "Love" family continued Murry's psychological torture
and drove Brian right over the edge...
Dennis' story is particularly interesting, but THEN there is
Brian...the mysterious, reclusive fellow who quit touring EVEN BEFORE the drugs...fascinating story, introduced several times in "Heroes and Villians," then told by Brian in "Wouldn't It Be Nice," in greater detail. Fascinating!
Back to Dennis. "Heroes and Villians" opens with the episode just before he drowns, leaves you hanging (I cheated and went to the index, found it continued on page 350)...Then the book goes back to their childhood, continues with the formation of that great, wonderful rock'n'roll group, The Beach Boys.
Think about it: Dennis Wilson comes home from touring, finds Charles Manson and "family" have moved into his house, Manson cons him, and Dennis thinks Manson's a great guy, hangs out with him awhile, survives THAT, then later drowns in a similar manner to the way Brian Jones (Rolling Stones founder) died: Too much drinking, too much drugs, too much recklessness, too much overconfidence...a CLASSIC alcoholic - I know, I quit drinking myself 12 yrs ago and his story reminds me of MANY others...
And what about this therapist, Dr. Landy? Before I got these books I read some of the reviews posted and noticed that Dr. Landy was perceived as a villian, a 'Svengali,' but look what he accomplished with Brian - I'm not even talking about Brian's
story yet, even in "Heroes and Villians" the story is told of how Brian, after spending, what, 3 years, in bed, paranoid, unable to face the world or function normally...Brian's ex-wife, Marilyn DESERVES CREDIT AS ONE OF THE HEROES (at first) - instead of leaving Brian to rot she gets Dr. Landy to take Brian as a patient. AND HE GETS CURED! What a great story - the short version (some of which is untrue) is in
"Heroes and Villians," the rest in "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

Book Description
A didactic work, wherein the author, a CPA, MBA, attorney, asserts that all of the seemingly illusive solutions to America's problems will only be found in the expansion of American Democracy that must include all Americans.
This expansion requires direct participation by all Americans in both the policy and decision-making processes of their government if they are ever to achieve accountability over their elected representatives and the reality of a genuine American government of the American people, by the American people, and most importantly, an American government for the American people.
The author describes how the failure of all Americans to protect their democracy going into the twenty-first century will inevitably result in the already begun evolution of American Democracy into American Aristocracy and American serfdom. The author describes how the objectives of direct citizen participation and accountability over elected representatives can be lawfully and democratically accomplished.
The author identifies specific solutions to America's social, economic, and political problems, the roots of which can be traced to the thirty-year breakdown of the American government ethos, the American professional ethos, and the American business ethos. From these root causes, the author offers unique solutions to reverse the decline of American morality and the decline of American culture which now threatens the very existence of an already declining American Civilization.
Contrary to today's popular American pessimism, the author argues that if all Americans directly participate in their democracy that America's Golden Age remains on the horizon for all Americans, as America begins its journey into the Information Age.
The Table of Contents of
American Solutions Without Sacrifice that appears below summarizes the long list of seminal problems Americans must consider if they are going to have an American Democracy that will serve all Americans in the twenty-first century. In every chapter, the author suggests solutions to the problems suggested by the title of those chapters.
In Chapters 19 and 20, the author sets forth a detailed blueprint of the necessary economic and political solutions required to put America back on track morally, socially, economically, and politically.
American Solutions Without Sacrifice is a wake-up call to all middle-class Americans who want to participate in a twenty-first century American Renaissance and the restoration of the American Dream in order to avoid American serfdom that will otherwise become the American reality of the twenty-first century.

Book Description
This is a story of survivalsurvival of a people and their way of life, and most importantly, the survival of the human spirit. Although the book shares the story of only one small group of people, Return to the Drum sheds light on the struggles and the successes of Aboriginal peoples across Canada.
The adventure begins when Miggs Wynne Morris, a young Welsh teacher, accepts a position to live and teach in the small, isolated community of Fort Franklin in the Northwest Territories in 1965. The second part of the book documents her return to that villagenow called Délinein 1995. As Morris shares her experiences of life with the Sahtuot'ine - the people of Great Bear Lake - her memories of these hard-working and proud people are interwoven with glimpses of their life from pre-European contact to the present. Return to the Drum will enlighten and anger, uplift and delight readers.
Customer Reviews:
More than a Memoir - Editorial review (abbreviated).......2004-09-25
Return to the Drum is more than a memoir. Morris is a thoughtful, respectful and self-critical writer. Her descriptions - often recalling actual conversations - are fresh and lively. She has a great respect and admiration for the people in the community. It is eminently readable
Beautifully writtern.......2004-09-25
Return to the Drum is beautifully written, interesting, honest, thought-provoking,and in every way, excellent. I do hope that everyone who has an interest in the needs of Aboriginal people - and that should be all of us -- will read it as an important and well-told message
Return To The Drum - a must read!.......2003-01-19
I loved this book as it contains the elements I enjoy in a good read - stories of ordinary people living, laughing and coming to appreciate each other. It is about a people's strength as they survive and adapt with dignity to the many challenges inflicted upon them across the years. It is about the author, a young Welsh teacher, who goes to the Arctic and ends up learning a great deal! The two stories intertwine as we learn about the Dene Indian's daily life in this northern community and their past. You finish the book having laughed, cried, being angry and ultimately caring about these people. It is beautifully written, interesting, honest and thought-provoking. It is a must read for anyone interested in the needs of Aboriginal people -and that should be all of us.
