      Book Description

Among the Second Series of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, this volume has the most detailed coverage of his day-to-day life. These disciplined records of personal expenditures, and of various other daily observations, furnish valuable information about prices and availability of commodities of the period and provide abundant evidence of Jefferson's devotion to a systematic way of living and of his insatiable curiosity.

      5 out of 5 stars A Marvel of Editing!.......2000-10-31

Jefferson's Memorandum Books are a marvel in themselves, but even more so with the editing work of Bear and Stanton. The Memorandum Books are transcribed to offer the reader Jefferson's records on money spent travelling from DC back to Monticello (p. 1094), the efficiency of one- vs. two-wheeled wheelbarrows (p. 282), or his early legal notations. But what makes this work invluable is the wealth of information that the editors have packed into the footnotes about everything from Jefferson's personal relationships at the time of an entry, to the location of a road or river he mentions, to whatever can be known about a slave paid for running an errand. To make the 1419 page (with footnotes) Jefferson document usable, the editors constructed a 203 page index to make the Memorandum Books as useful a tool as they could be. The scholarly apparatus here makes this publication a source for historians of just about anything, from the local to the national economy, slave life at Monticello and Virginia, the environment, and, of course, Thomas Jefferson. The only problem with the books is the price tag, which will inhibit many who don't have institutional support for their research tools.

      Book Description

A fascinating and harrowing account of the men and women who struggle to improve the lives of people in desperate need.

Doctors Without Borders (also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF) is arguably the best known humanitarian organization in the world. These professional men and women deliver emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics and natural disasters as well as to many others who lack reliable health care. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer doctors, nurses and other professionals join locally hired staff to provide medical aid and health care in more than 80 countries.

At the forefront of this organization and its work are the volunteer doctors and other health professionals who risk their lives to perform surgery, establish or rehabilitate hospitals and clinics, run nutrition and sanitation programs, and train local medical personnel. This book follows these men and women on location as they risk their own health, well-being and lives to treat patients in desperate need.

These engaging true stories with dramatic color photographs examine the lives of individual volunteer medical professionals from around the world who:

This new paperback edition is updated to include events that occurred following publication of the hardcover.

Hope in Hell chronicles the raucous founding of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the organization. If there is a horrific event, MSF will be there. This book tells why and how.

      5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down.......2007-09-06

This is an AMAZING book. It takes alot for a book to really captivate me, and Hope in Hell did so about a page into it. I recomend this book to everyone, whether your an avid reader into good stories, or wether your like myself and considering a career with the MSF.

The book makes sure to cover all jobs that you could fill with the organization, with the execption of working for one of their western offices. It covers job descroptions for water sanitation workers, Logistians (excuse my spelling), Nurses, Doctors, and Surgeons. I feel it is great for people considering work with the MSF because it gives you the full story through acounts from actual volunteers, not only does it tell you the nature of the feild work, but also the effect it has on people pschologically when they return home, and how they react once back in their "homes" (and how they realize their only home is with the MSF).

The book also spends time discussing the structural aspect of the organization as well as politics and Drug research.

I bought the book and couldn't put it down, a great read.

5 out of 5 stars MSF brings hope tot he most unimagineable Hell.......2006-01-10

I am a grade 10 student who recently used this book for an english project. I found this book to be highly insightful of MSF thoughts, goals and ideas. The book painted a bold picture that sends a impactful image of our world. It sheds lights on many projects MSF is currently working on and also makes you think of these people who give their lives for strangers in order to provide life.
Technically, the book follows an understandable format and remains interesting throughout while covering a lot of information. Many perspectives are covered which gives the book added depth.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2005-08-02

This book really helped putting the finishing touches on my sister's research projects about doctors without borders, especially since many books don't offer as many insights and pictures as this one.

3 out of 5 stars impersonal and repetitive.......2005-02-05

I would say that Hope in Hell is a good read and an interesting book but I have to say that the style is very impersonal, very repetitive, very introductory and does not do justice to the many MSF volunteers who were interviewed for the book.
It is impersonal because there is little more than a name and perhaps the country of origin given as the stories of volunteers are told. I read this book right after reading the Fast Food Nation in which the writer describes his interview subjects in a manner that enables the reader to have a mental picutre and develop a deep relationship with them.
Hope in Hell reads as an introductory piece of writting. Half way through the book I still thought I was reading the introductory chapter.
The sotries in this book were tragic and could've and should've been written in a heart wrenching style but the writer failed to write it so.
I would recommend it as a book to skim through but not a book worth purchasing and adding to your collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent writing.......2007-03-09

Donald McCaig is an excellent writer. He just contributed a new introduction to "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne. The whole book is worth reading, but the intro is the icing on the cake. If you are an animal trainer, an animal lover, or just a Donald McCaig fan, it's definitely worth checking out.

      5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down........2007-02-12

This is a must read but an emotional ride. Be prepared. A fine and exhausting story. I was up all night with it and loved it. Not a dissapointment. You become so tied to this dog that you can't put the book down.

      Very engaging and throroughly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars A Book for Border Collie Lovers.......2006-10-30

I purchased and read this book because my wife and I have a 2 year old border collie that we have raised from practically birth. We do not work her in herding events or agility at this time, but understand what her breed is all about. Due to this, I struggled to identify with the show events in the book, but really enjoyed the story of the bond between pet and person. Some of the story was a bit cheesy to me, but I felt overall the book was very worth reading and provided much insight into the bond with border collies and the show curcuit. I also enjoy how this book lets the dog have a voice of sorts in the book. I would recommend this book for dog lovers and especially border collie lovers such as myself.

5 out of 5 stars Get Hooked on Border Collies and Sheepherding Trials.......2004-10-15

Mr. McCaig's writing evokes the hardscrabble lot of the book's characters, human and canine, and it grips the reader's attention until the end.

Through descriptions of farm life and sheepherding trials, the author traverses excruciating pain, redeemed finally by the love a man has for his daughter and her Border Collie.

Mr. McCaig thoroughly understands Border Collies, sheepherding trials, and people. He is personally active in the sheepherd trial community; his experience imbues his story with realism.

5 out of 5 stars More trials, more hope for Penny.......2003-04-25

I found this book very touching. I felt an enormous sense of compassion for Penny and understood her frantic efforts to escape from her overwhelming grief. Although her choices seemed very foreign to me, I felt that I could empathize with her. She often seemed blind to others and their needs, and their efforts to help her, because her own hurts were so enormous. But, her wonderful dog, Hope, was marvelous and, like dogs tend to be, nonjudgemental. Penny's mistakes were realistic, and I think she finally learned from them. The dawning of her ability to move on and begin a new life at the end of the book was sensitively done in the author's easy-reading and unpretentious style. I found this a book for reading over and over again. It did not leave me with the disturbing images that Nop's Trials did.

      Book Description

Refugees are a controversial topic of discussion in Canada today. All too often, they are treated as nameless statistics or caricatures in the occasional story that flares across the front pages of newspapers. In At The Border Called Hope, refugees have names and faces and they reveal a Canada that is better than we think and worse than we know. At the Border Called Hope tells the remarkable story of Mary Jo Leddy's fight for justice on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves.

I think this book should be required reading for all teens. The story was totally amazing. Hope, Courage, Just amazing. I think about how trivial my own problems are when you think about how life really is. Maybe if our children grow up knowing this kind of history the world would be a better place with more understanding and tolerant people. I would even suggest going to his website and getting him to speak at your school. http://www.bordersofhope.com/

Abraham Getman recently visited my school to speak about his experiences. He told us what it was liek living in europe at the time. He was NOT in a concentration camp, as someone previously said. But he witnessed his father being taken away ffrom him to a camp. This story is veyr moving, and i reccomend it to anybody interested in the subject.

Borders of Hope is a Holocaust memoir, a story about the life of Abraham Getman, born in 1926 in one of many Eastern European towns whose identity had changed many times over the centuries as wars were fought and won, then lost again. Although not rich, the Getman family had strong emotional bonds, a social and religious structure to their lives and a reassuring consistency. After Germany invaded Poland, life began to change. First, the changes were minor and the family was patriotically stoic in adapting to what they thought were simply the hardships of war. But gradually the local attacks became more severe and focused and the Getman family realized that this was just a war between Germany against Poland or Russia; this was a war against the Jews, a war against them. When Abraham was wrenched from the bosom of his family, he was forced to survive by his wits in a way that will touch, astound and dismay you. How does a boy - barely a teenager - with no family, no money, no home and no guidance survive when he is forced to live like a hunted animal? Getman's story brings a compelling intimacy to a period of history that many thought could never happen and all must ensure never happens again.

From the chilling adventure tale of the sea, The Boats of the 'Glen Carrig', and the power and horror of The Ghost Pirates, to the strange and haunting vision of the House on the Borderland and the bizarre and wonderfully imaginative The Night Land, the four great novels of William Hope Hodgson are universally recognized as one of the landmarks in the literature of the weird and fantastic. Strange and compelling, these are powerful works that exercise the same fascination today as they did on Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, and all four are collected here.

A timely and data-driven monograph enriched by the authentic voice of its Mexican American subjects, Violence and Hope reveals sociopolitical strife and power between the borders of two nations. It is a potent story of inequality of opportunity, immigration, drug and human trafficking, gangs, prostitution, poverty, crime, and family violence in "Esperanza," a U.S. town 45 miles from Mexico. Glittenberg tells how members of a community in need of transformation, riddled with drive-by shootings and competing gangs, become enraged by a violent event and mobilize to confront the wide-reaching issues they face. Esperanzans, in their growing awareness that violence comes not only from the outside but also the inside, seek financial resources and courage to escape from their cultural pattern of silence, complicity, and complacency.

                    Book Description

As the HIV/AIDS epidemic has grown to become the fourth biggest killer in the world and the leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa so the pressure on those working in the field to expand the scale of their activities has increased. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been especially influential in the response to HIV in developing countries and the pressure to increase the scope and impact of this work is particularly strong.

"Making an Impact in HIV and AIDS" recognizes that scaling up NGO programmes requires more than just additional resources or the straightforward replication or expansion of interventions. The book analyzes when expansion is appropriate, how to make it effective, how to measure the costs, and what the implications for organizations may be. It examines these issues through the experience of NGOs working in different contexts and in all aspects of HIV/AIDS including prevention, care and support, and mitigating the impact of the epidemic.

The author draws on case studies from a range of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. She integrates the insights from these experiences with existing thinking and proposes a new typology of approaches to scaling up. Key elements of scaling up are discussed, as are issues such as the risks entailed in growth, motivations for scaling up and the special challenges related to scaling up work on HIV and AIDS.

This book is aimed at those active in the HIV/AIDS field who are interested in NGO programmes, and those in the wider development field who are concerned about the impact of HIV/AIDS and what NGOs can do about it. It makes an important contribution to thinking about scaling up NGO activities in general and is particularly relevant as the pressures of the epidemic concern not only the organizations directly involved but also those working on all aspects of development.

                          Book Description

"It's all devastatingly true — except the bits that are lies" — Douglas Adams

Upon publication Don't Panic established itself as the definitive companion to Adams's life and work. This new revised edition comes up to date, covering his later work and untimely death in 2001, and including a new introduction by Neil Gaiman.

Acclaimed author Neil Gaiman celebrates the life of Douglas Adams who, in a field in Innsbruck in 1971, had an idea that became The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy — the radio series that started it all, the five book `trilogy', the TV series, almost-film, and everything that followed. Don't Panic also tells the story of the other projects Douglas worked on, including his posthumous collection The Salmon of Doubt.

Interesting and funn at times, this book is pretty bland considering it is a biography of one of (in my mind) the greatest authors I've ever read. (I've only read about 5 different authors, however).

In Douglas Adams' own review of this book, I totally agree:

"The best biography of Douglas Adams & the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy written since this morning" - D.A.

I'd give it a miss, in retrospect. (Maybe you can buy mine).

This is a neat little book. I found the 1st edition years ago by chance in my university bookstore and bought it. When this revised edition (with some new material) was released, I snapped that up as well and re-read it.
Basically, think of this as the book equivalent to a "Bonus Features" DVD. It's jam packed with odd little stories and insights into the making of the Hitchhiker's universe (all media: radio, records, books, & TV). Die-Hard Adams fans will enjoy this.
And the fact that this happens to be compiled by Neil Gaiman, one of my other favorite writers, is just an added bonus.

                          5 out of 5 stars A great tribute to a great man.......2005-02-12

This is part a biography of Douglas Adams, and part a description of how the different versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy came to be. Douglas Adams was a very interesting and intelligent man whose life was cut tragically short. The story of how his most famous work was created is almost as funny and capticating as the Hitchiker's Guide itself. We get some examples of his early work, which can be incredibly funny ("How many kamikaze missions have you flown?" "Fourteen Sir!" "Shouldn't it be just one?"). He was involved with the Monty Python group, and wrote some material for them.
I think the book should be essential not only for Hitchhiker's buffs but also for wannabes in any creative profession.

Neil Gaiman does an excellent job of capturing the style and mood of Douglas Adams, and reveals the man behind the books revered by many. This book is enjoyable, and interesting, and a definite read for anyone who loves the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The only sad part is that it's a bit short - like Adams' life. So that's a bit depressing. Otherwise, a good read!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Gaiman and Adams fans.......2003-11-07

Years ago, while browsing in a book shop, desperate for something to read during lunch, I stumbled across this little book. I was a big fan of Adams but had never heard of Gaiman but decided to pick it up and give it a chance. It was well worth it as it was a great read.

Some time later, I spotted a new hardback on the shelves at the same book shop. I knew the name Pratchett and had to think for a while as where I knew the name Gaiman from and then recalled that he had written that little book called Don't Panic, so I picked it up. Haven't looked back since.

                          5 out of 5 stars A guide to the Hitchhiker's Guide.......2004-04-01

OK, after two Pangalactic Gargleblasters, I think I can get something about sci-fi writer Neil Gaiman's nonfiction work, Don't Panic, which chronicles the evolution of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy through its incarnations as radio series, novel, computer game, towel, and TV series. Due to a totally original idea, well, kind of, as he got the idea lying on the grass thinking that there should be something like The Hitchhiker's Guide To Galaxy, HGTTG and its sequels became another dollop of Britannia that was rabidly slurped up by USA-ers that they did the Beatles and Monty Python. But it also explains the success of HH, as it came out in the wake of Star Wars and Close Encounters making sci-fi acceptable entertainment for mass consumption.

It reveals that Adams was quite a talent at an early age, from his short story submission for The Eagle at age 12, to a hilarious very Pythonseque Kamikaze Briefing sketch included here that I really enjoyed that he did pre-HH. His secret? "Writing comes easy. All you have to do is stare at a blank piece of paper until your forehead bleeds." Thank goodness I had those paper towels to clean up my computer screen.

Part of this is a biography of Adams, from his days at Cambridge, to his wilderness years doing odd jobs, including being a bodyguard for some Arabs, and doing collaborations with other writers, many of which fell through. Despite initially being mistaken for being the sixth Python member, he did work with Graham Chapman, but that didn't work out, as Chapman was struggling with alcoholism at the time. His time as Doctor Who's script editor from 1978-1979, and the three stories he personally wrote for the series, is explained, and the reason why he hated being script editor. But there is also a synopsis of the stillborn Dr. Who and the Krikkitmen at the back of the book, parts of which later became Life, The Universe, And Everything, the knotty but still well-written third book.

Adams reveals to have some sensitive yet artistic side of him. He doesn't seem to like remembering about writing his books because of some bad memories and hardships he had to go through. And time-oriented is NOT the word to describe him. For writing my and his personal favourite in the series, The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, he had to be locked up in an apartment in an ascetic-like existence for four weeks, with Paul Simon's One Trick Pony as his only companion.

Neither is deadline a word found in Adams' dictionary. Apart from only doing three essays during his time at Cambridge, there was even a time during the second series of the radio programme that "they were recording the show in one part of the studio, while I was in another part of the studio actually writing the next scene."(!!!)

Mixed inbetween are script excerpts from dialogue never used in the radio series. There's also a list of the most asked questions to Adams, of which most of them are either brief and to the point or totally deranged, but he did answer one I wondered, which was the Dire Straits song he referred to in So Long..., which was "Tunnel of Love" from Making Movies.

This goes up to the first Dirk Gently novel, done in 1987, and it's a good read for those into HH or wanting to learn about the story and history about HH after reading the series. Whoops, time for another Pangalactic Gargleblaster and a slice of Arcturan Megadonkey.

damn, this book was funny as hell! the main character was always getting into screwy situations, it seemed as if everything was going wrong for him and then the best thing happened, the planet blew up. maybe it wasnt the best thing, but it shure was a turning point for him. after the planet goes the story delivers non-stop laughs and the craziest things happen, this story keeps you giggling and interested until the very last word. i would reccomend this book to someone looking for a really un-serious story of complete mayhem and calamity.

5 out of 5 stars Warts-and-everything story of the creation of the Guide.......2001-06-04

For anyone interested in how the Hitchhiker's Guide came into being, this is essential reading. For anyone interested in the evolution of a great idea into a radio series, album, TV series, computer game, five books, and more than one attempt at a film script, this is equally vital.

I found it particularly helpful in providing explanations of why:

                          1. episodes five and six of the first radio series have a different style to the wonderful episodes 1 to 4.

                          2. the second radio series was so sloppy in comparison to the first.

It's fascinating to read Douglas Adams' original summary of the Hitchhiker concept. (Goodness knows why Arther Dent was originally going to be called Alaric!) It was depressing to read how Adams and John Lloyd (co-writer of episodes 5 and 6) fell out when Adams changed his mind about co-writing the first book, but encouraging that they put their differences behind them and went on to collaborate on works like 'The Meaning of Liff'.

There are plenty of bits of unused dialogue spread across the pages of this book. It is partly a biography of Adams and partly a biography of the Hitchhikers Guide itself. There is a BBC-produced double cassette tape which also tells the story of the Hitchhiker but tends to gloss over most of the disagreements that Adams had with various BBC colleagues and publishers.

I would strongly recommend Hitchhiker fans to get this book.

Let's face it. The "Hitchhiker's Guide" books aren't well written. . . but they sure are fun to read!!!! If you want to why the first book has some problems with cohesions, read this book. If you want to know what influenced the increasingly misnamed trilogy, read this book. It is worth it! (and besides, it is written by Neil Gaiman who's work bears Adam's influence!)
