"Be all you can be!".......2002-07-30
These vibrant stories of such phenomenal women who Dared to be Different and accomplished such awesome feats against so much adversity will inspire you to reach higher goals, regardless of any obstacles of the times! These outstanding women are incredible to study and this book is an excellent volume of heroism and unique personalities! Kudos!
20 short stories about 20 amazing western women........2001-12-19
This is a great read about 20 remarkable western women of whom some you will know and others you will meet for the first time. From Sacagawea who accompanied Lewis & Clark, Georgia O'Keefe, a revolutionary in the art world to Sandra Day O'Conner, the first woman on the Supreme Court Justice, these snapshots demonstrate the tenacity and inspiration that guided these women to design their own lives. An excellent read that will inspire you to look deeper into the lives of these amazing women who helped shape the American West.
Amazing Women.......2001-10-31
A great book for learning more about women who made a difference in the frontier and later days of the West. Some subjects were familiar to me while others were completely new.
The author organizes her information in a easily read, informative manner. Each subject was well researched.
A good read!!
great gift idea for women.......2001-10-23
Trailblazers-Twenty Amazing Western Women was a fantastic book which I have already given to several friends, who are or have gone through some "rough times" in their own lives, and have thanked me for this book as it is inspirational and a comfort.
I hope it will be used in schools for teen-age girls, and in classes all over for women who seem to need stories of other women and what all they have been through and gotten through.
I would highly recommend this book and plan to give it to others for Christmas presents too. It is nice to have a story to read every night before going to bed, or if you just have a few minutes to devote to a story.
Highly enlightening. I loved it!
Trailblazers:Twenty Amazing Western Women,.......2001-10-23
This is a terrific look at women who have shaped our country's growth and direction but are always left out of those mythical History classes we have in school. There are some familiar names as well as the names of aviation pioneers and other modern unsung heroines. Each chapter is a delightful short story that has obviously been well researched. Worth the read for women and men, a must for every young girl.

Book Description
This new edition of Southern Writers assumes its distinguished predecessor's place as the essential reference on literary artists of the American South. Broadly expanded and thoroughly revised, it boasts 604 entriesnearly double the earlier edition'swritten by 264 scholars. For every figure major and minor, from the venerable and canonical to the fresh and innovative, a biographical sketch and chronological list of published works provide comprehensive, concise, up-to-date information. Here in one convenient source are the South's novelists and short story writers, poets and dramatists, memoirists and essayists, journalists, scholars, and biographers from the colonial period to the twenty-first century.
What constitutes a "southern writer" is always a matter for debate. Editors Joseph M. Flora and Amber Vogel have used a generous definition that turns on having a significant connection to the region, in either a personal or literary sense. New to this volume are younger writers who have emerged in the quarter century since the dictionary's original publication, as well as older talents previously unknown or unacknowledged. For almost every writer found in the previous edition, a new biography has been commissioned.
Drawn from the very best minds on southern literature and covering the full spectrum of its practitioners, Southern Writers is an indispensable reference book for anyone intrigued by the subject.
AUTHOR BIO: Joseph M. Flora is Atlanta Professor of Southern Culture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author, editor, or coeditor of many books, including The Companion to Southern Literature: Themes, Genres, Places, People, Movements, and Motifs and the original Southern Writers: A Biographical Dictionary.
Amber Vogel is director of the DESTINY Traveling Science Learning Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A Californian by birth, she has lived in the South since a teenager and has been engaged in the region's culture and literature as an editor and educator for more than twenty years.
A native North Carolinian, Bryan Giemza is a visiting assistant professor of English at Wake Forest University.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting but tries to be too many things.......2001-09-18
In this collection of essays Aaron Lawrence, one of the more infamous online hustlers writes about various encounters he has had in his line of work. I found the book interesting, however I am not sure who exactly it is aimed at. One would think someone writing their biography should be in posession of deep (or at least some...) personal insight. Mr Lawrence however presents a picture of a rather insecure, yet hopelessly narcissistic and selfish individual. He 'charmingly' devalues his relationship with his supportive yet unhappy boyfriend. He also goes into detail about how he 'fools' his customers with outward words and looks while revealing to the reader what he really thinks of his cutomers (usually derogatory). Mr Lawrence relates one encounter where he is left in tears when a client confronts him about why he prostitutes himself, and admits maybe he thinks he is psychologically disturbed. At other times Mr Lawrence claims to be prefectly at peace with his profession...even proud of his choices. I don't object to Mr Lawrences choices...but if you are going to write an autobiography shouldn't you at least be somewhat consistent, or at least be able to make a reasonable story of your internal dilemmas? Mr Lawrence just presents the picture of a confused and lonely person. I cannot imagine why anyone after reading his unkind thoughts on 90% of his customers would even consider hiring him. Parts of the stories seem to be trying to be semi-erotic, yet this is not a book of erotic tales and anyone buying it as such will be disappointed. In any case any eroticism is usually destroyed by Mr Lawrences reveries right in the middle of the encounter about how much money he is making and how much he dislikes this client.
In summary - it's not erotic, so don't buy it if you want that; It's not terribly insightful, so don't buy it for that; It's not politically savy about sexual rights, so don't buy it for that; It won't tell you either how to be or how to hire an escort, so don't buy it for that (try instead Mr Lawrences other book for this purpose). I found 40% of it boring, self- aggrandizing, navel-staring. However, the remaining 60% is interesting. There aren't a lot of books out there that do cover this subject, and seeing inside the mind of a hustler is in itself a valid purpose for the book.
Honest and Courageous.......2001-03-22
I loved this book! As a fellow sex worker, I found Aaron to be a wonderful story teller. I saw myself in so many of his stories, going through the same emotions and experiences. I really admire his honesty and forthrightness in discussing his sex work. I think this book is honest and courageous and helps to break down the myths and negative stereotypes people have about male sex workers. I highly recommend it!
Nice Try Though.......2000-11-04
Lawrence had a nice idea yet, his intention was obvious. Lawrence with his website and ego-driven ethics desires attention. The book was clearly a bragging tool and left out many important issues, points, comments, and other things more related to the issue of online escorts. Imagine if you will; a dorky boy in highschool who later finds attention, "love", and respect in prostitution. It all has gotten to the head and it shows. But hey it was a nice try, maybe he needed an author.

definitely *not* the "best of the best".......2000-08-18
Obviously this book appeals to many people; however, having read numerous accounts of male prostitution, I was highly disappointed in this one. This book is not really about the sex trade, it's about Lawrence's quest to gain self-esteem by being paid for sex. Sadly, there is no discussion of the social and political issues surrounding sex work; Lawrence seems unaware of any of the interesting issues related to the criminalization and stigmatization of prostitution/hustling. Lawrence comes across as shallow and insecure, bragging, in nearly every chapter, about the size of his penis and how hard it was for him to find a partner who could accommodate him (he charmingly mentions, more than once, that even his boyfriend is inadequate). I don't agree with another reviewer that he's a sex addict, nor that hustling will leave him permanently scarred. It's just that his account of hustling is more navel-gazing and ego-stroking than introspection and insider commentary.

Book Description
Bard of Iceland makes available for the first time in any language other than Icelandic an extensive selection of works by Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807-1845), the most important poet of modern Iceland. Jónas was also Iceland's first professionally trained geologist and an active contributor in a number of other scientific fields: geography, botany, zoology, and archaeology. He played a key role as well in Iceland's struggle to gain independence from Denmark. "Descriptive power and fullness of spirit were the hallmarks of his soul," wrote a contemporary admirer. Dick Ringler, one of the premier scholars of Icelandic literature in the world, offers a substantial biography of Jónas, a representative selection of his most important poems, and some of his prose work in science and belles lettres. Ringler also provides extended commentaries and an essay on Icelandic prosody.
The poems are translated into English equivalents of their original complex meters in Icelandic and Danish. As a poet Jónas was intimately familiar with his nation's medieval literary inheritancethe sagas and eddasand also with the groundbreaking work of contemporary German and Danish Romanticism (Chamisso, Heine, Oehlenschläger). A master of poetic form, Jónas not only exploited and enlarged the possibilities of traditional eddic and skaldic meters, but introduced the sonnet, triolet stanza, terza and ottava rima, and blank verse into the Icelandic metrical repertory.

His life, his struggle to help Iceland gain independence from Denmark, and his mastery of poetic verse in context are all showcased in this impressive literary collection, skillfully gathered with astute and insightful commentary by an accomplished Scandinavian literary academician and expert.

A simple, easy-to-understand holistic guide to retirement. Addresses the specific needs and problems of medical professionals facing retirement, especially Chiropractic doctors and business owners.
Book Description
Howard Bass Cushing's short life was a kaleidoscope of experiences and adventures. His military career began with the First Illinois Light Artillery as a private during the Civil War, and he later rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the Regular Army. He died in 1871 in an Apache ambush while leading a special scout to locate and punish marauding Apaches in southeastern Arizona Territory.
A checkered military career reflected his personality. During the Civil War, he rose rapidly and proved capable of commanding an artillery battery, yet Cushing faced a court martial as the result of a drunken escapade. To escape the stigma attached to this incident, he requested, and was finally granted, a transfer to the third Cavalry in the New Mexico and Arizona Territories.
As troop commander, Cushing led numerous expeditions against renegade Apaches in both Territories. He was respected by his men and his bravery and leadership qualities were never questioned by those he led. Howard Bass Cushing is one of the unsung heroes of Arizona Territory.

Customer Reviews:
Double Lives, Second Chances........2005-02-02
Kieslowski changed my life. I watched RED first, then WHITE and Finally BLUE. I've never watched anything that moved me so. So much better than anything that comes out of Hollywood( except for the occasional Shawshank). Ann Insdorf does a great job narrating the DVD--in the 'extras' section of the trilogy. Based on her performance, I bought 'Double Lives'. I enjoyed her personal observations of the master at work. I loved her book. My only complaint is I wanted more analysis of the Trilogy(and the Decalogue). But she gives a fantastic job on the Trilogy DVD set. She's a true scholar of the sage.
Blue White Red.......1999-11-30
I have been an enormous follower and keeper of Kieslowki's work since a fateful afternoon when I stumbled upon a showing of "Blue" several years ago. This of course came to a bittersweet juncture when K died in 1997. Regardless, this book accurately captures the the development of this extraordinary director... and writer. Insdorff presented some interesting insights in her writing amidst some oversights: the car in Blue was a Puegeott, not BMW, and no mentioning of "Blue's" Julie's accident interruption in court in "White". Although Kieslowki's beginnings and earlier works like his string of documentaries and "Decalogue" are crutcial to his foundation as an outstandingly brilliant director as showcased in the Three Colors trilogy, I wished more expoundment was made on the his final three works which is truly poetry in images.

A vital key to Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen.......2004-02-29
Wilhelm Dinesen, father of Karen Dinesen (later Karen Blixen) comitted suicide by hanging himself in Copenhagen at the age of 49 on March 28, 1895, only a few weeks before his second oldest daughter Karen's tenth birthday (April 17).
It is a well-known fact that the death of a parent at a young age, between the age of nine and fourteen in particular, is devestating to a child, and one that often continues to haunt the person for the rest of their life. William Styron is one famous example; his mother died from cancer when he was fourteen, and her death and his unresolved emotions stemming from the grief was partly responsible for the severe depression which came close to driving him to suicide many years later when he was around sixty.
Karen Blixen did not make a secret of how much her father had meant to her or that his death had a profound effect on her, but it was not until she became a writer/story teller that she truly dealt with her emotions. Pain turned into art, as she herself stated.
When reading her father's - in Danish literature - classic "Letters from the Hunt", one is given a marvelous key to Karen Blixen. When I read it (in my native Danish) I was immensely moved by his love of nature, his respect for it, and I was also delighted by his sense of humor. His personality and charm comes across so vividly today, more than a century later that I found myself seeing himself through the eyes of his wife Ingeborg and his daughter Karen, and fully understanding their undying love for him.
A note: Wilhelm most likely had extramarital erotic escapades. They were common and almost expected, and many men contracted various VDs from mistresses or prostitutes, but his love of his wife Ingeborg was by all accounts genuine, depite their different personalities. And: we cannot judge a late 19th century marriage (1881-95) by today's standard. Besides, things have not changed much since then. The only difference now is that both men and women engage in seeking sexual "spice" ouside marriage.
Ingeborg was left with five children to raise (with the help and support of family and household staff), but with her deep Unitarian faith and staying busy with homemaking, she seems to have survived with remarkably few emotional scars, although she was not a person to wear her heart on her sleeve and most likely grieved in private. Karen on the other hand never fully recovered from the loss. Ingeborg knew this and recognized her late husband's spirit and personality in their daughter. (In Blixen's "Letters from Africa" there is a wonderful letter from Ingeborg to Karen's brother Thomas in which she writes of this)
Karen did not search for a father figure in a partner, but for someone who could give her the same gifts that her father had given her when he would take her for walks around Rungstedlund, the garden and woods and meadows surrounding their home of the same name north of Copenhagen.(the area is one of the most beautiful parts of Denmark) He was often away in Parliament, on trips, or hunting with friends, but when he was home, she was clearly his favorite child and the one he felt closest to, despite the fact that he had two sons, Karen's younger brothers, who were mere toddlers at the time.
His writing is that of a natural born writer; it seems to come easy to him (he himself is said not to have thought of writing as more than a hobby). The descriptions of the Danish and Swedish scenery are lyrical and yet wonderfully straightforward, as if he is painting a picture for us. Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen would later paint pictures for her readers of Africa, Denmark, and other places in much the same manner.
Wilhelm Dinesen's respect for the American Indian (he lived for three years in a cabin in Wisconsin and made friends with the native Americans there who named him Boganis (hazelnut - the name he later chose as his author pseudonym), for animals, and his love of women and admiration for soldiers (he fought in several European wars as a young man) are all a joy to read. And in our politically correct times, a note: Yes, he was a hunter, but he was not a reckless, vain, boastful one.
The book (which in fact is comprised of his two collections of Letters from the 1880s and 1890s)) is a beautiful and sublime volume which offers the reader more than just a glimpse into the mind of a remarkable man and a vital key to his daughter Karen who became a world famous writer. He would have been proud.
Karen Blixen found Wilhelm's equal in Denys Finch Hatton (they met in 1918, four years after her arrival to Africa; he died in 1931), and like her father, he too died well before his time, although perhaps Blixen herself, with her strong belief in fate, believed that their time had in fact come?) Fortunately, both of these larger-than-life men live on through Karen's life story and her writing, and for Wilhelm's part, also through his love "Letters" to nature and to life.
A must for anyone with more than a superficial interest in Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen.
Note: I have not read the book in translation, but sincerely hope that his words were not butchered in the process!
