"No I shall not die here," but he did, poor man.......2006-04-08
On October 18, 1863, while serving with Co. I of the 6th Michigan Cavalry in Charles Town, West Virginia, J. Osborn Coburn became a prisoner of war. A fairly large Confederate force under Brig. Gen. John Imboden attacked and captured the town that Sunday, and over 400 Union soldiers, including Coburn and 25 other enlisted men of Co. I, were marched to Belle Isle, the Southern prison camp located on the island of that name in the James River in Richmond. A lawyer from Big Rapids, Michigan, Coburn began keeping a diary of his experiences almost from the moment the men were marched south. This is that diary, and it's a powerful and saddening testament of man's cruelty to his fellow man.
Expecting to be paroled or exchanged at first, Coburn and the others were in good spirits. His early entries comment upon the beautiful fall weather, of playing cards and checkers, and only a little of the hunger they feel when rations are cut. But release from the prison doesn't come, and as winter sets in, conditions worsen dramatically. Shelter is scarce, the men are freezing; disease is more prevalent, especially diarrhea, which begins to take lives. Basic animal instincts begin to take over: bribes and barter are used to get additional rations, the sight of men dying becomes second nature. Coburn is often ill, and much of the diary tracks his condition. Before the end, shear desperation and despair set in, entries become single sentence cries: "Same as yesterday, why encumber the pages with more ..." Coburn dies on March 8, 1864, of chronic diarrhea and is buried in Richmond National Cemetery. Of the other 25 Co. I prisoners, 17 died on Belle Isle.
Interspersed with Coburn's entries, editor Don Allison has included other pertinent information regarding Coburn's history and what life was like for POWs in the Civil War. Closer to Belle Isle, he also relates some of Confederate Maj. Isaac Carrington's Nov. 1863 inspection report of Belle Isle prison where conditions are described as "comfortable," and "healthy." Something like 40,000 men died in prison camps, North and South, during the war; reading Coburn's account of his experiences puts a human touch on what might otherwise be just an appalling statistic.
A Living Hell.......2004-12-10
This book was of special interest to me because an ancestor of mine was captured at Limestone Station with the 100th OVI and imprisoned at Belle Isle during the time period in which Coburn wrote his diary.
J. Osborn Coburn's diary is especially well-written, and gives detailed accounts of activities at the prison camp, as well as describing the suffering that occurred in that place. By comparing my ancestor's record with Coburn's account of an exchange of 600 prisoners, I learned that my ancestor was almost certainly one of the fortunate 600.
Unfortunately, Coburn found release from his suffering only in death, but his journal somehow survived. Now it is available to us through Don Allison's book, which skillfully combines bits of narration and illustrations, with the thoughts of Coburn. There is also a good index.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Civil War prisons.

Book Description
Now in paperback, an informative and entertaining "biography" of Odysseus by an acclaimed classicist.Odysseus, the fictional Bronze Age hero, is an extraordinary figure who has captured our imagination over the millennia from culture to culture. But until now, he has never been the subject of a "biography," in which his life is set out from beginning to end. In this remarkable book, beloved classicist Charles Beye puts his unique spin on Odysseus' strange and adventuresome existence. With tremendous wit and insight, Beye portrays the character's amazing life and evolution -- and in the process casts new light on one of the great figures of the Western imagination.

The "real" Odysseus.......2004-06-01
What I loved about Odysseus: A Life is that it indulges a desire to identify with this mythological character as if he were a person while simultaneously reminding one of the fundamentally Modern limits of this kind of identification. Along the way, Beye elaborates a breathtaking overview of Classical culture, vividly informed by his passionate knowledge of the literature. It is a highly enjoyable read, told with great irony and wit.
Red Hot.......2004-04-18
I knew when I read "Odysseus: A Life" that Charles Beye is no ordinary or academic academic. Once voted "Red Hot Prof" by the students at Stanford University, Beye is wonderfully skilled at blending his vivid imagination and his mastery of ancient Homeric poem, myth, and history. He re-creates the epic hero as a man you can't help but find fascinating and irresistibly appealing. This book is utterly satisfying!
Fun for Everyone.......2004-04-12
The great thing about this book is that everyone can learn from it. Whether you are a junior high school student just embarking upon your own odyssey in the world of the classics, or a retired person trying to get back into the world of literature, or even a scholar with a good knowledge of Homer and his poems, Beye's book serves the useful function of creating a multi-dimensional character out of all of the available souces, not just a single one. In other words, Beye brings to life someone who is a mythic figure and endows him with a full set of human characteristics that allows us to recognize him as both an ancient hero and a contemporary. This is an enjoyable but also provocative and worthwhile reading and educational experience.
Odysseus Redux.......2004-04-11
As someone who knows the ODYSSEY as well as a non-classicist can, before I bought this book, I asked myself: what is there to say, to add to what we have learned over the centuries about this great hero, and who would dare to try? Knowing other books by Beye, and having had the pleasure of hearing him talk in public forums, I should have known better than to ask. But why a new "life" of the great hero? Simply because there is plenty to more to say about him than we know. The basic unanswered questions--who, what, where, when, and why--abound in any thoughtful reader's mind. He gives us his take on Odysseus' life from birth right up to the time that he leaves for his battles and wanderingss. Of course, much of this is speculation, but it's inspired and fascinating speculation, founded on Beye's vast knowledge of Homer and his times. Beye not only tackles these issues with thoroughness, and dazzling wit, but also contributes substantial psychological insights, some based solidly on how the ancients thought about their heroes, and others based on our modern notions. Women, who play such a major role in Odysseus's exploits, are also given new meaning in this book. Beyond psychology, we learn a variety of things about ancient Greece, things Homer does not give us: its look, smell, ways of building its structures and boats, eating habits, sexual customs, and more. Beye manages a very difficult balancing act: preserving the role of the distinguished scholar that he his with making Odysseus seem not only heroic, but human. He does that both with integrity and humor, reasons enough for anyone interested in the subject to read this book. And for those who haven't read the ODYSSEY, this perfect introduction will surely encourage them to turn to the classic once they've finished Beye's book. In my view, this is an thoroughly delightful, informative, and captivating book.

In “Fiscal Sponsorship: 6 Ways to Do It Right, Second Edition” nonprofit tax law expert Gregory Colvin brings his 1993 work up to date. This expanded edition, with 20-plus pages of new material and an added index, includes recent cases, the latest developments and more in-depth analysis of concepts that were initially explained in the first edition, which has become the bible in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Good Reference for Nonprofit Sponsors.......2006-03-31
Many individuals and groups wish to pursue a nonprofit mission, but lack the organizational infrastructure to establish or maintain a nonprofit corporation. Fiscal Sponsorship is a good primer for established nonprofit organizations that might provide this support.
Mr. Colvin originally wrote this book in 1993 to present ethical and legal alternatives to the concept of "fiscal agency." Some nonprofits asked to be "fiscal agents" were being used as conduits or pass-through agencies for individuals or groups to receive tax-deductible contributions to fund activities that were of questionable public benefit. As a result, the terms "fiscal agency" and "fiscal agent," as applied to nonprofits, have become suspect. "Fiscal sponsorship" is the preferred term for proper arrangements between nonprofits and those seeking the benefits of nonprofit incorporation for public benefit purposes.
The book outlines three scenarios: two artists seeking charitable support for their artistic production and teaching activities; a church with an AIDS hospice program that has outgrown the church's capacity to manage it effectively; and a US environmental group with significant lobbying activities seeking to purchase Brazilian rainforest to protect it from development. Each scenario is then applied to six fiscal sponsorship models in ascending order of independence and autonomy. A handy two-page reference chart compares and contrasts the six models, supplementing the book's narrative. A seventh model, derived from a 1990 US Supreme Court decision, specific to Mormon (LDS Church) parents providing tax-deductible support for their children's mission activities, is explored but noted to be as yet untested.
My own ethical antennae were alerted when the AIDS hospice scenario included a desire by friends and relatives to make tax-deductible gifts to support a specific patient's medication needs. I would have been more comfortable had Mr. Colvin handled this potentially dangerous issue more regularly and consistently throughout the book's application of each sponsorship model to the scenarios. He alludes to the IRS requirement for a tax-deductible gift to benefit an indefinite, open-ended "charitable class" when discussing a preapproved grantor-grantee relationship, but doesn't address the issue equally well when discussing the other five models.
A web site, www.fiscalsponsorship.com, has been set up in conjunction with the second edition of the book. Unfortunately, the web site only seeks to sell the book and provides links to two other web sites with sponsorship-related information - far from the promise of posting new developments in fiscal sponsorship.
One should pick up this book with a definite interest in the subject - it's not for the casual reader. Most people and groups in need of fiscal sponsorship will likely not know how to articulate that need, and will be less sophisticated in evaluating the legal and operational considerations. However, representatives of organizations seeking brief, solid advice on options for supporting nonprofit activities of smaller groups and individuals will find it very helpful.

Book Description
Fiscal Sponsorship: Six Ways to Do It Right describes six models of sponsorship that have been approved and accepted by the IRS. It details how they are supposed to work and why, how they differ and how they are similar.
Fiscal sponsorship is a term that is not well understood within the nonprofit world. A "fiscal sponsor" is widely, and mistakenly, called "fiscal agent," which misstates the relationship between a tax-exempt organization and any separate non-exempt project that comes under its aegis.
Four leading San Francisco fiscal sponsors in the arts and human services (Intersection for the Arts, the San Francisco Study Center, Film Arts Foundation and California Lawyers for the Arts) began meeting in 1991 to collect and share information on sponsorship practices to clarify their legal underpinnings and improve their effectiveness. The meetings and the production of this book were supported by The San Francisco Foundation and The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation.
Fiscal sponsorship is an ideal way for nonprofits to operate in the 1990s. It saves money, conserves resources, reduces duplication of personnel, simplifies organizational needs and offers other benefits to service-minded community groups. Nonprofits should utilize fiscal sponsorship to increase service capacity. Foundations should support fiscal sponsorship to stretch their grantmaking, and public agencies should consider it as an efficient way to contract out services.

Never before in paperback: A rare eyewitness appreciation of a jazz legend
Bix has always inspired acclaim, for he was an unmatched master of the cornet. Ralph Berton was privileged enough to have been a fan-and younger brother of Bix's drummer--just as Beiderbecke's genius was flowering, before he died in 1931 at age twenty-eight. Listening from behind the piano, tagging along to honky-tonks and jam sessions, Berton heard some of the most extraordinary music of the century, and he brings Bix and his era alive with a remarkable combination of the excitement of youth and the perspective of the five decades that followed-decades that confirmed Bix's place in the pantheon of jazz.
Customer Reviews:
Books should reveal truth, not spread baloney - I'd rate it no stars if I could.......2007-09-29
An earlier reviewer said "Berton bubbles over with cleverness." True - clever writing based on inaccuracies and half truths by all Bix's other contemporaries and the scholarly research done by others.
You'd be far better off reading Sudhalter and Evans' "BIX: MAN AND LEGEND".
The section on Bix's supposed Bisexuality comes across as Berton's fantasy /projection on Bix. Berton seems more fascinated with himself and his family than the subject of the book.
I think Bix, who was an easy going guy by all accounts, would have punched out Berton if he had lived to see this piece of tripe published.
Makes good kindling....
I've read dozens of jazz history books - this one's the best!.......2005-08-10
I simply could not put this book down, and when forced to, only thought of when I might be able to pick it back up again. Ralph Berton is an amazing writer. He combines colorful prose, great humor and rare insights into the soul of jazz, life, love and lest we forget, the tragic life of Bix Beiderbecke.
If you are a musicologist looking for studious research on this period of jazz, you will be frustrated by this book. If you treasure rich imagery that brings history to life, step into this wonderful time machine - and enjoy a guided tour of jazz culture in the 1920's.
one of my top 5...........2003-02-20
i haven't read this in a while. i came across it in a little bookstore in san francisco, bought it and didn't put it down for a week. it is such an unbelievably rich experience. it does bear mentioning that the book doesn't wholly focus on bix. you end up not really caring. the portions dealing with bix are very profound and highly memorable.
ralph berton is a very sensitive writer. his ability to draw in the reader is formidable.
i loaned my copy to my mom, so i came to amazon to buy another copy.
Take with a grain of salt (and a slug of gin).......2002-05-21
This book is essentially everything you wanted to know about the career, family and sex life of Ralph Berton -- oh, and then there's that guy Beiderbecke who keeps hanging around him.
Actually, it's not a bad evocation of a frantic era and how it ended. Berton paints some great word pictures of what it must have been like to travel with the Wolverines and party with a still young-and-healthy Bix. The skeptical or more serious reader, however, may speculate on exactly where the facts end and the fiction begins.
For a more even-handed bio, a better bet is Sudhalter/Evans' BIX: MAN AND LEGEND, which treats its subject with respect without turning into a dry listing of facts and dates.
Still, REMEMBERING BIX is a fun read for anyone in love with Bix, his music, and his times.
It's WONDERFUL......plain & simple!.......2001-06-30
I, too, read it a long time ago. I would have been crazy about this book even if I'd never heard of Bix. Every paragraph is a gem. Berton bubbles over with cleverness. I use expressions & phrases that I picked up from the book, every day! And like another reviewer, I would love to know what happened to Ralph Berton.

Book Description
When Mauno Koivisto was elected president of Finland in 1982, Leonid Brezhnev was still in the Kremlin and Ronald Reagan had been the U.S. president for a year. Relations between the superpowers were at low ebb, and there seemed little prospect of improvement. A "Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance" with the USSR had been signed by a weakened Finland in 1948, and its military provisions led to talk of "Finlandization." The Soviets would not accept the concept of Finnish neutrality, to which the Finns adhered strongly. When Koivisto left office in 1994, the Soviet Union no longer existed, the 1948 treaty had been replaced, and Finland was about to become a member of the European Union, something unthinkable a few years earlier.
In his last years as president, Koivisto played a major role in three important developments. First, there was the urgent need of the Soviet Union, and subsequently of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, for external economic support—a fact appreciated by Koivisto, a former central banker, but less so by the U.S. administration and the International Monetary Fund, both of which he sought to persuade. Secondly, when the three Baltic republics were emerging as independent states, they looked to nearby Finland as a role model and as a supportive ally, a circumstance that caused Koivisto considerable trouble in light of his own delicate balance with Russia. In the third instance, the question of whether Finland should seek EU membership involved national self-examination as well as delicate external negotiations.
Koivisto’s account is partly a historical record. As events unfold, we follow his thinking as we become privy to his conversations and correspondence with his own ministers as well as with his foreign counterparts. As such, this book is a case history of statecraft in a small country involved in great events, but it is much more than that, for Koivisto does not miss the human element or overlook the ironies of power politics among nations.
