Incredibly tedious.......2006-03-17
It is difficult to credit that Mr. Klaus spent his entire career teaching non-fiction writing, given that this book is so poorly written. Surely he should know that the purpose of a published journal is not to record boring details, but to enlighten, entertain or inspire the reader. Sadly, "Taking Retirement" completely fails at this task. It's chock-full of factual minutia (do we REALLY need detailed accounts of the menus of every meal he eats?), and utterly devoid of insight.
One thinks of the scene in "Planes, Trains & Automobiles", in which a frustrated Neal Page (Steve Martin) tells the oh-so-boring Del Griffith (John Candy): "You know... you know when you're telling these little stories? Here's a good idea: have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!".
Wimps have trouble with retirement.......2004-03-10
I've been to two week-long workshops at the University of Iowa and found them extremely useful and well organized. Thus, I was disappointed in Klaus, who played an important role in the writing program at UI, because his book Taking Retirement leaves much to be desired. He is far too concerned about his own fear of retirement. If he had some suggestions for those who fear retirement, the book would be more helpful. I found it tedious, maybe because I've been retired for a while. Never did I read anyone's work who felt so sorry for himself. I wanted to tell Klaus to "get a life" as the younger generation says.

I wanted to like this book very much, but after the first 50 pages I began to identify with the author's wife who encouraged him to quit ruminating on the loss of his title, his students, his office, etc. He visits friends and relatives in nursing homes to make himself even more melancholy about the future, frets over the variables of his investments and gives his co-workers a hard time over having a party to commemorate his career. I was hoping this would be a helpful "How To", but I found it to be a definite "How Not To".
Honest, Insightful Look at Retirement.......2000-06-06
Just ending the first five months of my own retirement, I bought this book looking for some helpful advice. What I found was an honest, fascinating book about a person going through a life transition and not being afraid to share his experience, warts and all. It is a tremendously helpful book not only for its information but also as a model of great journal writing.

The forgotten general.......2005-11-15
George Gordon Meade is the forgotten general of the American Civil War. Overshadowed by Grant, his authority undercut by Sheridan with his victory at Gettysburg questioned by Congress, he continued. In doing so, Meade showed a remarkable professionalism and dedication to victory match by few.
This is a military biography more than a personal one. Meade is married, has family, personal problems all of which take a distant second place to the war. The focus of the book is from Gettysburg to Appomattox, with good coverage from the 7 Days to Chancellorsville. The latter shows us the development of the general and his reputation as a fighting general and a no nonsense commander. His assumption of command was popular with most of the army. The Hooker clique always resented him and worked to destroy him for most of the war. This played into the hands of the radicals, who dislike Meade for his assumed identification with McClellan.
Ethan Rafuse is producing outstanding books on the Civil War. I bought this book because he is the author and was not disappointed. It is an excellent overview of General Meade and covers all the major points of his life.

Boring with lots of typos!.......2005-09-11
After reading Anthony's "Scar Tissue" it's really tough for any other book on rock music to hold up. I thought I'd read "Velvet Groove" to get an outsider's perspective. Very early on in the book I started noticing typos, at least one in every chapter. After awhile it's kind of insulting to the reader. Even the name of the BAND was misspelled once as the Red Hit Chili Peppers (and no it wasn't an intentional thing implying that they had lot's of "hits"). If the book was compelling I could overlook the typos and bad grammar, but this one is really a yawn-fest that is only interesting when interview quotes from Rolling Stone magazine are provided.
In the author's bio it states that "Roach has written over 80 titles and many biographies of rock bands" (I am paraphrasing) It is my opinion that this writer should focus more on quality than quantity and for God's sake hire a proof reader!

I first learned of this book on the Morningstar web site where it is listed as a resource. After seeing it recommended on 3 other financial web sites I decided to purchase the book. I truly believe every teacher should own this book. It is well-written with a friendly "person-to-person" writing style that makes for easy reading. The charts and graphs which appear throughout the book are fully explained and easily understood, even by a rank amateur like me. I would recommend this book to any teacher who has or should have supplemental retirement investments.

concise review of various nurses and where they were station.......1998-10-05
This book identifies some of the thousands of valiant women who cared for the soldiers during the war. It gives a tiny insight into those women who are known by name. As a nurse, I wish that there was more detail regarding their specific duties and responsibilities. The manner in which the material for this book was collected does not lend itself to a more detailed review of the nurses. Overall, I enjoyed the book. It opened the door into the world of civil war nursing and the brave women who answered the call of the bugle.

First of all the author and publisher could have done a better job in checking the book for typographical errors. That being said, on to the book.
The information contained is very useful and basic. I like all the website listings and telephone numbers. The book is not complicated to read in one sitting (15 - 20 minutes). You will gain a lot of information if you are just beginning to explore this subject. I wished that the author had expounded more on research information like liens and other encumbrances and how these can potentially affect the bidder.
I originally borrowed this book from the library. But since I thought it was a good reference, I decided to buy it. It is always good to go over sections of the book from time to time.

I was expecting more information than this book offered. It did contain some basic generic information, but bottom line was go and find out how to take advantage of foreclosures in your area by yourself. The entire book took an hour to read.
Good info, but very little of it........2000-06-10
This book is only 92 pages long, and it has only few sentences per page. It really is no more than an informative, but skimpy brochure, and it takes about 10 to 15 minutes (tops) to read. Basicaly, the only information included is a very general definition of the types of foreclosure auctions you are likely to come across, and a list of addresses and web pages of institutions which might have forclosures available for sale. It is a great starting point, but don't expect any tips, tricks or advice, nor any information beyond the barest of minimum. It would be an OK place to start for someone who has no prior information whatsoever about forclosures, but I feel that the price of the book doesn't reflect the amount of info you get. Buy this book only if you can't find anything else.

I'm glad I found this book. You know a writer has finally made it when "they" start publishing books ABOUT him, eh?
Jim is a great writer, poetic in a totally accessible way. Don't like poetry? Read his and you'll be a convert.
Jim is a GREAT conversationalist. This book lets you into that world for the first time. This is a compilation of all his major interviews along with some rare ones. As the preface says, there is some repetition in them, but it wears well and shows what is important to Jim.
(I bought the "True Bones" book as well: the bio-pics of the longhair 70's days is great, the cover art is great, but the academic writing style is unreadable. It's a PhD paper in hardcover. Caution flag unless you're fluent in artspeak.)
In "Conversations" we get great insights into the guy and the game. How many top writers today hammer at MFA's like he does? He's pretty honest about Hollywood as well. Hey, his pals there helped him when others wouldn't. He's up front about that and about the banality of the place as well. At the same time, he gets high on the power, the talent and the $1000 dinners. Who wouldn't? He keeps the books as open as anyone.
We have to admit in this country that if someone wrote the actual literature that would keep our culture alive THEY WOULD STARVE TO DEATH. I think Jim is very clear about this. I'm not sure how many other writers who 'made it' are as candid. But he's a 'flyover' and values candor like so many here do.
American literature isn't dead. There are writers out there who have picked up the ball and have been moving it further all these years since Jim was in his prime. They just haven't seen print yet due to the MFA stranglehold. But not for long! "Flyover" spirit lives in the Underground Literary Alliance...The ULA is the first group to do something about the racket and tragedy that Jim laments about in his interviews.
For such a huge talent, I hate to say anything at all detracting, but we fans have our rights. I have one complaint: Harrison lets some of the obligatory Hollywood vibes into his books. It's the "old geezer gets the hot babes" thing. But Jim has always been up front about his need to pay the bills and play the ONLY game that writers are allowed to play if they don't want to teach or starve: the game with Hollywood. It's either feast or famine. (The ULA is changing this!)
Another thing is the jet-set stuff. His characters and even his memoirs tend to be about idle rich guys causing trouble in fancy and rustic places. His rich writer friends from the 70's often used the same plot. It's fine enough, but runs a little short on relevance. The rich aren't like you and me. They aren't even like themselves much of the time, if you consider the theme of confusion in their work. Yeah, I know it's silly: take out the cross-generation sex and jet-setting and what's left? (The Michigan woods all alone?) Where's the tension? Well, that's for the writer to worry about. : ) Jim's dualism of cabin/mansion, stew/caviar is of course like catnip even while a part of it bugs me. He's marvelously joyous about his fancy dinners and famous friends so I'm happy to call it art and not fret about it. He sure is more candid than others about this kind of thing. What else is he supposed to do really. Well, on a different vein: use that bully pulpit more. He's always railed against the MFAs but with his clout now it would stick.

Interesting and Informative.......2003-03-21
Each story represented the struggles and sacrifices that each woman had to suffer in order to stand up for what she believed in. These stories give women who are either Native or non-Native a sense of pride and accomplishment in female history. After reading the book, I felt liberated from all the misconceived notions about natives and native women that I had been taught about. Due to the author's indepth account of each woman and her environment I felt as if I knew each woman personally. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a good read!
