TEACHING ENGLISH OVERSEAS: A GUIDE FOR AMERICANS/CANADIANS.......2007-09-09
After reading the book, I found it very informative and would suggest the reading to any prospective ESL teachers that want to be informed of the industry. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the author was rather biased when it came to the CELTA program. He never mentioned the actual names of other teacher training courses. Since I am taking the CELTA anyways, I still give this author an A+++++ since he is an experiened TEFL professional who seems to be quite knowledgeable and notable individual in the industry. Thumbs up!!!
The bible of overseas English jobs: job hunting, EFL training, and numerous practical considerations.......2006-01-20
I'm currently finishing up a master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and checked out "Teaching English Overseas" to aid me in my job quest. It is absolutely loaded with helpful information, from choosing a TEFL certificate/TESOL program, to how to market yourself overseas(including a step-by-step guide to creating an ESL resume), preparing for interviews, researching your potential employers, where to find jobs, and what to expect.
In addition, there are sections devoted to job outlooks by region (very few opportunities in EU countries for those without an EU passport, although thousands of North Americans teach illegally, limited jobs in parts of Africa and the Middle East). Your best bet is to try for former Eastern Bloc countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, etc.) and Asia (Japan, China, Taiwan, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam). Mexico is also a good source for those looking for something closer to home.
"Teaching English Overseas" also includes sections devoted to legalities, practicalities, and health concerns, dealing with culture shock, your first weeks overseas, and a very thorough appendix that covers TEFL certificate programs in Canada, the USA, and abroad, along with TEFL books, lists of overseas employers (with email and addresses), TEFL job websites, international programs and employers, and a "test your knowledge of English" section to give you an idea of what grammar points employers expect you to be able to explain.
This is an absolute necessity for anyone considering teaching English abroad, whether you have no TEFL experience or you already have an advanced TESOL degree.
This book will save you a lot of work.......2005-06-21
Like most nonfiction books, much of this book's content could be gained from other sources. But you know how long it can take to find information on the Internet, and how unreliable much of that info is. Reading this book will save you many, many hours of web surfing -- and you can be sure that the advice in the book is from someone who is a very experienced and respected figure in the field of teaching English.
I first used the book about three years ago, when I was just thinking about teaching abroad. I found it really helpful: It answered my questions, it directed me to a good TESOL certificate program, and it led me to a good job in Mexico. After I got back to the US, I used the book again to help me find and secure a good job in China.
So I give the book five stars and think it's well worth the money.
I want to give it NO STARS .......2005-06-08
If you want someone to publish your PRIVATE email address WITHOUT permission and to give false information about you, buy this book. I recently found out why for the last 2 years I have been getting resumes from people wanting to work in Korea sent to me. My email address was published in this book and I was listed as a recruiter for Korea which is not at all true. If the author had contacted me by email, he would have found this out, but NO, he had to do SHODDY work and also NEVER contacted me before deciding it was okay to publish my email address without checking the facts.. Maybe he published my email as a contact to make it look like he knew recruiters and was a good source of information about Korea. If this information is false, it makes me wonder how many more of these so called contacts/recruiters listed in the book really are recruiters. Don't buy this book and support him... Thanks to him, now my private email is publically published and who knows how many more years i will have to deal with people contacting me about jobs in Korea.
A decent resource, but not indespensible.......2005-04-01
After getting this book, I must admit I was somewhat dissapointed. I thought that based off of the other reviews, it would be better than it was. It does offer good advice, however nothing that you can't find off of reading the boards on Dave's ESL Cafe, TESALL, or a similar web resource. I guess if you don't have access to the web it would be good.

Now, these books are available in affordable, quality paperback editions, with new historical introductions written by leading experts in the field.
After beginning his career as a 12-year-old riverboat deckhand, Grant Marsh went on to serve with the Federal Mississippi River flotilla during the Civil War. Historical Adventure.......2006-02-12
One of the best books I have read in a long time. If you are interested in the history of the Western American Frontier this is a great book to read. I am not going to go in vast detail about this book but it is about a river boat captain named Grant Marsh, one of the greatest riverboat pilots of all time.

Book Description
The stability of the former Soviet states is threatened by their precarious geopolitical position within a turbulent economic and political environment. Swords and Sustenance explores the complex economic dimension of national security for two key post-Soviet countries, Belarus and Ukraine -- that is, how they have dealt with the challenges posed by internal economic and political reform and their relationships with Russia and the West.
The book first examines how differing commitments to economic and political reform (reform is largely absent in Belarus) affect Belarusian and Ukrainian approaches to security. It then considers the central role of Russia, and how Russian interests and policies toward Belarus and Ukraine limit the two countries' foreign and domestic policy choices. Two chapters discuss the national security implications for Belarus and Ukraine of two key economic factors in their foreign policy: energy trade (in the form of oil, gas, and pipelines) and military-industrial cooperation (including the sale of arms). Finally, the book considers the relationships of Belarus and Ukraine with regional and global institutions and explores the policies of the EU, NATO, and the United States toward Belarus and Ukraine.

J. K. Rowling review.......2007-09-13
Very informative in regards to the author. I just wish it had been updated to include more recent events. But, I did enjoy getting to know the author a little bit better. I guess dreams do come true!!
Walk away!.......2007-05-17
How I wish I had read some online reviews before picking up this clunker at the Barnes and Noble this week! It would be patronizing and insulting to kids to say this was written for children. Kids who read and understand the Harry Potter books will be far too advanced to find this more than a paperweight. Grammatical errors abound, the author apparently has a very limited vocabulary (he repeats pets phrases two and three times per paragraph) and yes, it is obvious he has never picked up and read a Harry Potter book. How else can one explain the Shapiro statement that wizarding banks are run by owls?!
Give this one a pass.
No new information. .......2007-02-07
All that is in here is what you can find on JK Rowling's website. Only if you have no access to an internet connection, and you haven't read her previous interviews, then this book would be informative to you. Otherwise, save your money.
"Not the best guide but it gets the job done......".......2006-06-25
Overall this book was a pretty fair source for the basic facts on Miss Rowlings life and career. However, as the book progressed it became very obvious that the author knew very little about the books themselves. He suuggested that owls run gringotts bank, and called cho cang cho chan. As other reviewers have already mentioned he also made a flaw on Miss Rowlings birthday. I know every one is human, therefore prone to flaw, but the lack of editing was noticeable. There was some pretty good pics, and lots off fascinating tid bits, but perhaps could use a bit more editing.
Nothing new.......2006-01-22
The writing style leads me to believe that this book is written for older elementary school age to middle school age children, so thankfully it was a quick read. The entire book is just a piecing together of interviews. Marc Shapiro has never interviewed J.K. Rowling himself. So there wasn't anything new or all that interesting in the book if you've read the interviews JKR has given over the years.
Shapiro also does a very lazy job of updating the book by just tacking on new material every couple of years to the end.
Overall, it was a disappointment.

New Review.......1999-06-24
When I posted a review of Vivian Greene-Gantzberg's Book "Biography of Danish Impressionist Herman Bang" last year i severely criticized all the short comings of that book. I have not changed my mind about it in the meantime but I have learned that the author, whose earlier work I admire very much, died before being able to revise the manuscript. Under these circumstances I find a review as harsh as mine unfair to the late author. Clearly the publisher is to blame here. I would therefore like to say that the book is not as good as it could have been but it's still the most detailed account of Herman Bang's life as well as the longest piece of literary criticism on Bang's work available in English. I recommend it to anybody who wants to know more about this fascinating author and cannot read either Danish or German.
What a disappointment!.......1998-08-23
Herman Bang is one of many Scandinavian authors who do not receive much attention outside the north of Europe. Writing a biography in English about this most intriguing and skillful Danish writer may well be a way to attract more interest in his work. I am myself working on a ph.d-thesis about Bang and therefore began to read Greene-Gantzberg's book with great interest - even more so because I had enjoyed her previous book "Herman Bang og det fremmede", an insightful report on Bang's stays abroad, brimming with information and only some slight mistakes to discover in it (like the incorrect list of Bang's works in German translation). Unfortunately I was soon to realize that despite its title this new book was not a biography but contained nothing but some rather short remarks about Bang's life followed by some criticism on his works. The content was more or less a superficial resumee of the Bang criticism of the last 50 years or so (up to the late 1980s), the only (questionable) benefit being that it is now available to English speaking readers. The English of the book itself is very poor though - probably due to a lack of proof reading which resulted in many "little" words like articles and prepositions being left out - very annoying to read even for a non-native speaker like me! Evidently Greene-Gantzberg's Danish proof readers who took care of "Herman Bang og det fremmede" did a much better job! Where the content is concerned I have to say that I was not only disappointed to see that the author had obviously based her book entirely on rather old (if not wrong) findings and decided to ignore the latest research completely, I was also shocked by the fact that she often makes no mention of her sources (Some remarks in Steffen Steffensens article on Thomas Mann and Scandinavia are almost quoted word by word, yet the article itself is never mentioned). The bibliography at the end of the book is conspicuously short and lists just a couple of standard works. I could go on like that for quite some time but I'd better leave it at that. Greene-Gantzberg has not written a biography of Herman Bang, she doesn't even come close to Jacobsen's achievement (who wrote the 4 volume Danish biography of Bang in the 1960s) and her book lacks elegance (aswell as correctness) of language just as much as the declaration of her sources!(Obligatory for any kind of literary criticism that wants to be taken seriously!) Again: the only thing that could be said in favour of the book is the fact that it may help to draw some attention to Bang in the English speaking world.
