The naval face of the Civil War.......2000-09-12

"Under the Blue Pennant" is a rare, firsthand account of naval life during the Civil War. For that alone, it would merit recognition, but it is also a well-written, fascinating history of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Its author, John Grattan, served as a clerk to the Squadron's commander, which provided him an intimate glimpse into both major strategic maneuvers and into the daily life of the Civil War sailor on the Union side. Many modern military experts view today's joint operations between all services as a new approach to war. Grattan's account provides solid proof that the Union's leaders were planning and executing combined operations all along. Grattan recorded his experiences and observations in a clear, cohesive prose. What Grattan leaves out in background detail, is ably provided in editor Robert John Schneller's excellent introduction. Although quite lengthy, the introduction places Grattan's experiences into the overall context of the Civil War. "Under the Blue Pennant" helps feeling a gaping hole of Civil War literature by wonderfully illustrating the vital but long neglected naval side of the war.

Fascinating Insight Into the US Navy in the Civil War.......1999-03-14

It is frustrating finding good books on the Navy during the Civil War, most everything published looks at operations on land. So it was fun surprise to find this book the other day. Grattan had a great "view" of the navy -- both its men (of high rank and low) and its operations. One gets an insight into life on ships for officers and enlisted, which is almost unheard of in Civil War publishing. Grattan is also candid in his opinions and one appreciates the frank assessments he makes.

I was surprised at the length of the editor's introduction (50 pages) -- but it too was a pleasant surprise. Schneller's commentary is informed and well worth reading. I am glad to see that there is a publisher that still lets editors write long intros when warranted.

The book has good maps and loads of illustrations, most all of which I have never seen before. The editor works at the U.S. Naval Historical Center, it appears he must know where all the good photos, paintings and woodcuts are kept.

Bottom line -- Grattan and Schneller have teamed up after more than 130 years to produce a most fascinating book. If you are looking for something new and interesting on the Civil War, you will love their collaboration!

A Great Place to Start.......2002-04-19

I used the acid test for considering how well written a technical book is about my business - I gave it to my wife when she asked me some questions one day.

I have had this book on my shelf for several months and found it extremely valuable in doing some quick general research and in exploring a variety of concepts dealing with planned giving. Written for the small shop (in my opinion) that needs to develop a planned giving program, this is a well-written and easily read book covering A to Z.

Topics start with what is planned giving, move through defining and discussing philanthropy, setting up a planned giving program (first steps), pitfalls to avoid, marketing planned giving and even sample gift instruments. These are but a few of the chapters in what I think is an excellent starting point for someone new to planned gifts and how to promote them (or even a pro looking for some fresh ideas).

Ah yes, my wife. For her, this was a bit of a liberating experience - she now has a good grasp of what I do. She can converse with friends about the business of planned giving very comfortably with a much better understanding of the basics.

Very Comprehenive Chronicle of Miss M's Career.......2003-06-13

Alison J. Waldman crafts a very detailed and comprehensive review of Bette's career until the point the book was written. The best section is the vivid details of the films Bette has made although box office data should have been procured. For fast facts on Bette, there are many and it is nice that a review was included for both the film and music section. To see how a critic felt about Bette's performance whether musically or cinematically is refreshing because it is difficult to find very old reviews from the 80s let alone the 70s. Another interesting section is the details of Bette's possible and still potential projects: to only imagine the various roads Bette career could have taken had she taken some of these projects. A very pleasing book though not as good and comprehensive as Waldman's BARBRA STREISAND SCRAPBOOK. Look for Bette's upcoming tour, her tribute CD to Rosemary Clooney with Barry Manilow and a 2004 film release of STEPFORD WIVES with Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick and Glenn Close. Maybe another of these scrapbooks should be crafted because Bette is getting busy again like she was in the late 90s and 2000.

Just so you know I am the hugest ~*Bette Midler*~ fan in the whole solar system and this book just reinforces how incredible she is. She's such an amazing woman and if you don't think so before, you definitly will when you're done reading. Even though I'm just sixteen she's my idol and this book is a must for any real Bette fan!!! :)

Bette's story is told beautifully through photos........1998-11-25

After seeing this book on the self, I knew that I had to buy it! The cover alone will grab you in and won't let go. After reading her biography, seeing her life in photographs makes it even more meaningful and special. The Divine Miss M shines through with style and carisma, even through the hard times. This is a classic that cannot be ignored by the "true" Bette Midler fan.

Take Me Home , Mr. Hungry Wolf.......2005-02-25

Moutain Home was a pleasant little book about a family living in the Canadian Rockies as it said, but something was missing. I felt badly, which was good, about the most well written parts of the book. Such as the one about the loss of the family dog, Tippy. There were other stories about animals and I am an animal person and have lived around some large animals. He told some good ones. The rest of the book was accurate and there, but more like a daily, weekly or event journal. The emotional impact was missing. I was looking for it on the trek across the Mountains to the gathering using an outdated map. Not there either. But I think what really got me was Mom. Yup, I saw her in pictures, and heard a few peeps about one thing or another, but not enough.

If you are going to have a Mountain Home and you start out with three children, one barely a month old, where did the next one come from? Was it born at home? What was Mom doing all this time? How does she spend her time? How does she feel about it? Does she get lonely being the only female over the age of childhood? Things like this would have made the book more interesting. And the kids. How old were they when they began to chop wood? What did they do for fun? What toys did they have?

So why 4 stars. Here is a man trying to raise 4 children in the Canadian Rockies. Both he and his wife are of Native American background. They home school their kids. Teach them the ways of their ancestors(Even though he has a Swiss father and I believe grew up in Europe.)They build, borrow or trade for what they need and finally he turns to writing to supplement their income. Now, that's something to read about, even if I don't appreciate his style of writing. It's also something to applaude, since all of his children have been able to continue their choosen education, travel worldwide, and enjoy experiences that very few of their peers would have dreamed possible.

Frances Peter was nineteen when she began recording her impressions of the Civil War. Her candid diary includes information concerning the alternating roughness and kindness of soldiers, dances and other entertainments, rumors of troop movements, the difficulties of life in an occupied city, and changes in attitude among the slave population following the Emancipation Proclamation.

As troops from both North and South took turns occupying Lexington, Peter repeatedly emphasized the rightness of the Union cause and minced no words in expressing her disdain for the hated “secesh.” Until her death by epileptic seizure in August, 1864, she conscientiously recorded her account of a torn and divided region, providing invaluable insights and a unique feminist perspective on an underappreciated aspect of the war.

A very Good Civilian Perspective.......2000-07-19

It's not too often that you get a Civilian view of the Civil War. This book shows how Seccesh and Unionists acted towards each other in a border state, depending upon who's troops were occupying the town of Lexington (Home of John Hunt Morgan). The diary was written by a homebound girl (she had epilepsy) with Union leanings. The area that she saw from her window still exists today, including her home and others mentioned and also show up on a hand-drawn map that is in the book. A very good book for those seeking something besides the same old worn out War stories.

A good civilian perspective of War time KY.......2000-07-18

A very good diary of the occupation of Lexington KY by both CS and US troops during the Civil War. Since the city was home to both Unionist and Secceshionist Civilians, it shows how each acted depending on who occupied the city at the time. It is a good illustration of Home Front activity.

In 1995, according to the Foundation Center, approximately 40,000 active private and community foundations in the USA awarded over $12 billion in grants to nonprofit organizations -- in the USA and many other countries. Corporate contributions for both company-sponsored foundations (whose giving is included in the $12 billion figure) and direct corporate giving programs amounted to about $6 billion. Just the sheer volume of grantmaking gives pause to grantseekers looking for foundation, corporate and other charitable support for children, youth or families. As its name implies, the National Guide to Children, Youth & Families is an indispensable guide in getting started. The volume contains 3,635 entries, including 3,224 grantmaking foundations, 182 direct corporate giving programs and 229 public charities (including 188 community foundations) that have shown a substantial interest in children, youth or families, either as part of their stated fields of interest, or through the actual grants of $10,000 or more reported to the Foundation Center. I am a Medved fan (and Seattle native). I was suprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I appreciated hearing about his leftist views early on and "watching" his conversion by virtue of his experience and sheer intelligence. I could listen to Medved debate with the opposition all day long. Hope to run into him on the street someday...

Michael Medved made the right turn.......2007-09-09

Most of Right Turns is well written, interesting, and fun to read. Medved does a good job of exposing the anti-war movement for what it was. He gives insights into the Robert Kennedy political campaign of 1968. Medved gives a lot of attention to his personal spiritual growth as an orthodox Jew, and how national events are significant to Jews. It was a joy to read the chapter, "A More Christian America Is Good for the Jews". Christians share many values with Jews, and if there are more people who are genuine Christians, there will be more freedom and kindness for the Jews. He also shows how Nixon supported Israel in the 1973 war.

Medved attended Yale in the late sixties, and had personal acquaintances with many prominent politicians. He seems very honest in describing Yale liberals. John Kerry was self-important and ambitious, Hillary Rodham was compassionate and likeable, but not quite the smartest person at the school.

Some parts are not so interesting to me, when he focuses on his personal life, and he picks up old conflicts between him and other movie critics.

The book has one error which should be corrected. On page 339 it says that the Presbyterian Church (USA) voted to block all investment in any companies doing business with Israel. The truth is that PCUSA voted to divest in companies that profit from Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, or from violent acts by Israelis or Palestinians against innocent civilians. Five such companies have been identified by PCUSA. They are Caterpillar, Citigroup, ITT, Motorola, and United Technologies. Citigroup is on the list because of alleged involvement in funding Palestinian militants, not for "doing business with Israel". There may have been sloppy or malicious journalists who reported that PCUSA was divesting in all companies who do business with Israel, but Medved still should have gotten this right.

Right Turns: From Liberal Activist to Conservative Champion in 35 Unconventional Lessons.......2007-03-20

This was a very absorbing autobigraphical book that discussed the milestones in Michael Medved's life that led him from liberalism to conservatism. His contact with many of the movers and shakers of today in the political and entertainment arenas, is fascinating. I have seldom been exposed to a more common-sense, logical thinker, and one who is both articulate and entertaining at the same time.

Thank God for Michael Medved and his insight. As a Medhead myself, I love his witty style, clear intellect and humility. This book gives the reader an intimate look into the life of a very entertaining public figure who affects our world for the better; truly living into his calling to ensure that people realize there is indeed hope for the future.

One of the best nuggets that I took from this book were in regard to the Scarlet Plague and his Uncle Moish's warnings about where the Scarlet Plague is found. The other great nugget, is in regard to the amount of time we American invest (need I say WASTE) in the consumption of popular culture. Thanks to seeing Michael Medved live at Grove City College in April 2005 and after reading this book, my husband and I KILLED our TV. Well, at least we got rid of cable tv (saving money was a nice bonus) and now we have found so much more time! It's amazing what an impact the media really does have on our lives if we let it. Thank you Michael Medved for alerting us!

Louis Riel believed that on 8 December 1875 he received a divine commission authorizing him to save the mTtis and reform the Catholic Church. He was a prophet, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the mTtis were the new chosen people. A new branch of the Catholic Church would be founded in North America, with its first Holy See in Montreal, and its second in Riel's birthplace of St. Vital.

When Riel expressed these views in 1876, he was committed to a lunatic asylum. After his release, he suppressed his ideas for several years, only to reveal them again to his mTtis followers during the North-West Rebellion. The Rebellion thus became as much a religious as a political movement; Riel believed himself a prophet to the end of his life, and he went to his death thinking that he, like Christ, would be resurrected on the third day.

Earlier writers about Louis Riel have noted his religious beliefs but have not taken them seriously. They have usually dismissed Riel's attempt to found a new religion as the symptom of a deranged mind. Thomas Flanagan takes Riel's religion seriously and analyses it using categories developed in the literature about millenarian movements. He shows that Riel's religion, far from being simply individual madness, is typical of the nativistic and millenarian movements described by one author as the 'religions of the oppressed.'

This is also a biography, tracing Riel's thinking on religious subjects from his childhood to the end of his life and paying particular attention to events in his life that influenced his thinking. This developmental approach is necessary because Riel's ideas changed frequently; he never arrived at a fixed 'system.'

The research is based on primary sources throughout. Much new documentation has become available over the past thirty years and in the sixteen years since this volume was initially published. In particular, new information is presented about Riel's youth in Montreal, his time in insane asylums, his years in Montana, and the North-West Rebellion. Flanagan also re-interprets well-known documents. While this revised edition does not alter the fundamentals of his interpretation, it improves the historical backdrop against which it is presented through use of a wealth of new primary sources. Flanagan has updated his citings of Riel's manuscripts to current sources.
