Book Description

For those who believe money is money, whether you are male or female, The New Working Woman's Guide to Retirement Planning shows why saving for retirement is different--and difficult--for women. Martha Priddy Patterson offers practical advice and usable solutions to the retirement planning obstacles women have to overcome.

Although women are gaining equal pension coverage with men and women's wages are ever slowly increasing, the need for retirement saving and planning, for both women and men, has never been greater. Through her professional and personal experiences, Patterson--an attorney who has spent 15 years specializing in employee benefits law--found that women were not paying attention to their financial retirement future. Case studies of four women at different stages of their lives, with a variety of careers and career patterns, demonstrate how retirement benefits grow--or disappear.

This new edition contains current up-to-the-minute information on new retirement planning options such as Roth IRAs, cash balance plans, SIMPLE plans, enhanced coverage of 401(k) plans, and the future of Social Security.

5 out of 5 stars Tops in My Book!.......2000-06-03

I read "The Working Woman's Guide to Retirement Planning" several years ago and was surprised to learn of the many reasons why women need to save for retirement differently from men. I put together my own retirement plan after reading it and now I'm retiring and taking my RV on the road for the next few years. I've read the updated version, "The New Woman's Guide to Retirement Planning," and hope many other women get as much out of it as I did the first one.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of meat!.......2000-05-05

As a financial advisor who specializes in working with women, I am so happy to see something for the general consumer that has a lot of meat to it. Usually most of the retirement information gets briefly mentioned and then brushed aside with a note that it's important stuff and you need to understand it--but there's usually no help given on how to understand it! This book provides the help in an easy to read and understand format. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Planning now to make the most of the years after the 9-to-5.......1999-12-17

The tone of this book is both frank and positive in discussing the reasons working women may have a harder time saving adequately for retirement than men do and showing how women can make the choices now to take this matter into their own hands and solve it. I wanted to skim the book and summarize its high points, but the details were too good and I can only say, if you are a working woman, you will want to read this book now.

5 out of 5 stars An authentic account.......2005-02-20

This is a true-life adventure story. The author does not attempt to tell a story of daring exploits - rather, he gives a factual accounting of his experiences as the owner-captain of a [private] Confederate blockade runner operating in the Gulf of Mexico. However, this factual account is all the more captivating because it is real.
What makes this story unique [for the genre] is that this is not a story about one of the big [fast] steam ships running the blockade in and out of the major ports on the Atlantic coast, this is a story about a relatively small, shallow draft sailing schooner using stealth and its ability to go into shallow waters to sneak past the Union ships in the backwaters of the Gulf.
The other aspect of the story that really sticks out is that the vast majority of the true threats and dangers to both the captain and his little boat take place on land not at sea. From corrupt public officials and conniving business partners to dishonest and dangerous crew members you can't help but worry for the man every time he steps ashore.
A great read. Thanks to Barto Arnold and Texas A&M University Press for re-publishing it.

5 out of 5 stars Suspense at Every Turn.......2003-06-23

I happened across the title, "The Civil War Adventures of a Blockade Runner," while doing some research on the Civil War in Texas. At the time, I was skeptical about what I might find in the book. As it turns out, Watson's book is not only a fast read, it's entertaining and suspenseful, too!

In this book, William Watson relates the experiences he had during the last few years of the Civil War. Watson, a British subject and a Confederate veteran, purchases a schooner, the Rob Roy, with the intent of making money through honest trade. However, he quickly realizes that more money might be had through blockade running. To that end, while making a run up the Texas coast to New Orleans, he ducks into the Brazos River at peril from a blockading gunboat and begins his career as a runner.

In his career, Watson makes several successful runs with the Rob Roy before he is forced to sell it because of disagreements with his business partners. Watson then finds employment on a steamer, and later captains a few more runs himself before the Civil War -- and with it, blockade running -- comes to an end.

Several things interested me in the book. First, Watson paints a good picture of the Confederate economy. I could almost see him cringe when the government siezes his boat and desires to pay him off with worthless Confederate paper money. However, Watson manages to keep his cool and successfully negotiates to have his vessel released.

Also, Watson goes into great details about the tricks he learns to avoid the United States gunships and slip in and out of Galveston.

Finally, Watson's business transactions show that many people, including foreign governments, found ways to make money, if not a living, from the war.

To be sure, Watson makes no apology for being an experienced sea captain. As a result, the reader will want to have handy a nautical dictionary to better understand what happened, for example, when the foreboom unshipped from its mast, or to understand what the captain of a boarding party is saying when he asks, "Is your jib to windard?" While the general idea can be had if the reader bears with Watson, I find it all the better to get the full nuance that he intended.

I completed the book in a week, mainly because I always wanted to find out what was going to happen to Watson next. Through good luck and bad, Watson makes the most of his career, with the result that he finds himself hundreds of dollars richer than when he began.

If you are interested in either the operation of 19th Century sailing ships, or the United States blockade during the Civil War, I recommend that you read this book as an excellent eyewitness account of both.

5 out of 5 stars Blockade running on the Texas coast.......2002-05-13

First, I arranged for the re-publication of this book because it relates to the Institute of Nautical Archaeology's multi-year excavation of the wreck of the Denbigh, a famous blockade-runner lost at Galveston in 1865. Certainly, I am a biased reviewer.

The book is of interest for the excellent writing style and coverage of the topic. Watson provides many technical details of how the captain of a blockade-runner carried out his job, including both daring the Union Navy and dealing with sharp businessmen ashore. We have no first hand accounts as yet for the Denbigh, but Watson's trips in and out of Galveston from Havana and other ports were very, very similar. Watson brings the past to life.

Rock Singer Layne Staley was one of the most private, mysterious and misunderstood performers ever! His story is told by his mother, sister and Layne himself. It dispels the myths about Layne's childhood, his early days in music, and the final, very private years of his life. It contains dozens of never-before-seen drawings, writings and photographs...that all shaped the ALICE IN CHAINS' songwriter/singer who sold millions of CDs...helping revolutionize modern rock.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2007-01-23

I was thrilled when I ordered this book. It took several months to finally get it and when I sat down to read it, I finished it in about twenty minutes! Needless to say, I was disappointed. But more than that, I was utterly confused by the writer! This book was nothing but a jumble of subjects that at times, had nothing to do each other or with Layne at all! For example, I don't understand how a writer can jump from talking about Layne to a report on the condition of her eating disorder! She didn't even try to tie in the points she was making. And honestly I could have cared less! All I wanted to know about was Layne's personality, his life, his goals, his pain and what led him to such an early death. Additonally, the band was hardly discussed at all. After reading this, I could understand why none of them would ever talk to her. But what confused me most was what I call the "filler" pages. These were pages of lyrics to songs written in memory of Layne and Dermi and they took up about four pages if my mind serves me correctly. They seemed out of place and put there just to increase the pages of the book. If you are looking for moving tributes to Layne, there are many available on line and I can guarantee you they are more inspirational than what was presented in this book. In conclusion, I would say that Rubio is an extremely poor writer. I have always said that a fifth grader could write better and that's no lie. She lacks focus and did not appear to have done any research other than talk to Layne's mother and sister, which I can't be sure is legitimate. It has been said that Layne's mother doesn't support this book and I can certainly understand why. This book does not do justice to Layne's memory and I'm am saddened that I put any money into her wallet by purchasing it. However, I had no idea at the time and as a fan, I was only trying to learn more about the man that inspired me. This book will leave you confused and severly disappointed.

actually,my friend purchased this book,so I've read it.yeah,I agree--this book isnt for any AIC or\and Layne fan.previous reviewers did good job judjing this misunderstanding.by the way-the author of this book is going to fix "some" mistakes with "Layne Staley:Get born again".she says there will be more pics of Layne, more interviews(+last Layne's interv) etc.who knows, maybee second attempt will be succesfull?i dont know, will see.but something tells me,that things wont change.
                      don't buy this "book".

1 out of 5 stars What the hell?.......2006-06-25

The only reason I like it is because it's worth $134.00 minimum and probably could get more. But I'm a collector of music paraphanelia so I'll keep it.
What a joke! Sorry, but what in God's name would you write such a crappy, undergrad community college level "article" loosely thrown together in desperate attempt to make it long enough to not be considered a brochure. I have loved Alice in Chains for as long as I can remember and had the opportunity to see them when they when Layne was still alive. Let me tell you, (huh) this is not a light subject for me having battled drugs myself and seeing a lot of myself in Layne, so I would NEVER do Layne such an injustice as to write such an irresponsible book. She acts as her methods and sources are so legitimate, but here sources seem to all be from people who RARELY SAW LAYNE or didn't even know him the last few years of his life.
This book is nothing but an attempt at self gratification by the author, living out her dream by writing a book on Layne Staley. Yeah, sooooo RAD!! Come on, go back to school, have some credibility, why don't you just take a dump on his grave now to seal the deal. This book sucks, hope another comes out that is legit.

What a shame.... Adriana Rubio managed to do such an amazingly bad job with this book, that it frightens me to think a publishing house was willing to print it.The book is superficial as regards Layne, egoistical(as regards Adriana Rubio) and lacks basic information. The other huge problem is that the author doesn't know how to write.I ask myself, if Layne didn't want a book written about him (which he was right about- considering the bad job this so-called writer did on his biography) why did his mum and sister allow this to happen and so sloppily at that. I am really touched by the lyrics Layne wrote and they continue to intrige me, but this book has left me irritated and confused, as half the time I couldn't understand 'what' the author was trying to say (as he English is so bad) and the rest of the time I was was trying to figure out 'why' she was trying to say some of the things she says. Rubio talks about herself (...who cares)and keeps saying things like 'I am going to share this and that with you' (oh ...wow.. thanks..). In conclusion, buy the book if you must - out of curiosity - but you'll probably find out a lot more about this great artist on the www. I believe this book is now rare.

2 out of 5 stars Where is the beef?.......2006-01-24

A lot was left out of this book. I am note sure if Layne wanted it that way, the family wanted it that way or if the author did not dig hard enough. Layne was reported to have another live in girlfriend the last 5 years of his life. Kids are even rumored.
A lot of this was left out. The book said Layne never left, that is not true. The book glorifies his mom - Layne really had mixed feelings and what kind of a mother doesn't check on her son for two weeks. This seems odd. Adriana is a terrible writer. She writes about her own problems and disects Laynes lyrics. We dont really learns anything more about Layne than what little we already dont know. She should did around Seattle more.... there is a lot of skeltons in that community.

                        Book Description

This is the story of Tecumseh, Chief of the Shawnees, who organized a Confederacy of Western Indian Tribes in order to resist further land cessions to the white man. Knowing of the growing tension between England and the United States, he looked to Britain for aid which she was willing to supply. The author has added to the main work a brief historical narrative of the Shawnee nation, with biographical sketches of several of its most distinguished chiefs. Written in 1841, less than 35 years after Tecumseh's death, the author uses many original sources to bring him and the Shawnee back to life. Benjamin Drake was born in Mason County, Kentucky in 1794. He moved to Cincinnati about 1815, was admitted to the bar about 1825, and practiced law during the remainder of his life. In 1830 he established and became editor of The Western Agriculturist, and subsequently edited the Cincinnati Chronicle. His published works include: Cincinnati in 1826 (with E. D. Mansfield, 1827); The Western Agriculturist and Practical Farmer's Guide (1830); The Life and Adventures of Black Hawk, with Sketches of Keokuk, the Sac and Fox Indians, and the Late Black Hawk War (1838); Life of Gen. William Henry Harrison (with Col. Charles S. Todd, 1840); and Life of Tecumseh, and his Brother the Prophet, with a Historical Sketch of the Shawanee Indians (1841). He died in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 1, 1841.

                          Book Description

In the preparation of this volume, the author's attention was drawn, to some extent, to the history of the Shawanoe tribe of Indians: and he has accordingly prefixed to the main work, a brief historical narrative of this wandering and warlike nation, with biographical sketches of several of its most distinguished chiefs. In addition to several outside sources of information, the author had personally, at different times, visited the frontiers of Ohio and the Indians, for the purpose of conversing with the Indians and the pioneers of that region, who happened to be acquainted with Tecumseh and his brother; and by these visits, was enabled to enrich his narrative with some amusing and valuable anecdotes.
