Book Description
European pension systems are increasingly under pressure. In this book Giuliano Bonoli examines policymakers' efforts to cope, caught between public support for existing pension schemes and the expected inability to sustain current arrangements in the context of an aging population. This book compares and assesses the process of pension policy-making in the UK, France and Switzerland, examining the factors that influence pension reform. The book looks at new pension legislation, demographic change, and pension financing, and will be of interest to policymakers as well as students of the welfare state.

Book Description
During separations enforced by the military, Lieutenant General George A. Custer and his wife, Elizabeth, corresponded about the Civil War, the perils of frontier life, and the chain of events that would lead to his tragic death at the Little Big Horn in Montana Territory. Their letters reveal the nuances of personal and political loyalties rarely expressed by historians and novelists. And they reveal a devotion rare among wartime marriages. He was her "Autie," her "Darling Boy," and she was his "Libbie," his "Darling Sunbeam."
When Elizabeth Custer died in 1933, after fifty-seven years of widowhood, she left behind these treasured letters. Her friend and literary executor, Marguerite Merington, edited them, adding related materials and a thread of narrative reaching from Custer's birth on an Ohio farm to the final fury at the Little Big Horn.
Customer Reviews:
All History is Perspective - Consider your sources.......2006-07-06
To the points made in several reviews - just because Libby Custer expresses something, doesn't necessarily make her history any more valid. Very few histories are not tainted in some way by the presenting historian - and most that are not are just boring facts. I am sure Luise Jodl also expressed deep love, and that Gen. Jodl in a similar fashion was a devoted husband, and at times struggling, conflicted military leader. In the Custer histories, the troubles come when we retroactively apply the standards and culture of today as the lens for viewing and judging a completely different timeframe. What personal letters and direct history such as this book provide is an unfiltered view of how the individuals of that time saw, judged, and created their circumstances. It renders history as "real," and in that sense is invaulable. However, again the source must always be considered. I'm sure the private diaries and letters of Frederick Benteen - describing facts as he saw them - might render a differing perspective :-)
An absolutely wonderful book.......2003-01-26
I grew up like most people being fed the lies of Hollywood and those with an ax to grind about American history and blamed George Custer.
I have read 3 books now on the Custers, My Life on the Plains, Boots and Saddles by his wonderful wife Libby and now this one of their personal letters.
In all of these books, the reader will find a husband and wife emerge who were deeply in love with each other, solid in their Christian faith, of good morals, temperate, loved and respected by all....who enjoyed life to it's fullest.
General Custer even emerges as thee soldier who did not want the Indian Wars, and, for an extra history eye opener, you will find he went to great lengths to rescue the Cheyenne from military confrontation....a people who would later massacre him and his command at Little Big Horn.
I can not say enough positive about this book. It is the truth and is a wonderful read with insights to America from the view of people who actually were part of our history.
Where else are you going to read that Vice President Andrew Johnson was drunk at Lincoln's Inaugural from the eye witness Libby Custer.
This is real...this is true. You will find a General who was always careful in his planning....never reckless as his late critics spout in so many lies.
George and Libby Custer's words should be REQUIRED reading by all the "experts" before they are allowed to publish their thoughts on people they never knew.
This is a cheap book...and worth 10 times the cost.
a self-image of Autie Custer and Libby Bacon.......1998-07-09
From the Foreword: "This assembling of their intimate letters was prepared at Mrs. Custer's request. ...[T]here are personal things one cannot say or suffer to be said during one's lifetime, but which ought to be said. For some decades, ending in 1933 at her death, I was [Mrs. Custer's] nearest friend."
Originally published in 1950, this reprint of Ms. Merrington's work interleaves selections from the personal letters of the Custers between a sympathetic narrative of their personal lives, providing an intimate view of his controversial career and their happy marriage. We see him as he leaves his family homestead in New Rumley, Ohio, for a military education at West Point; spy long glimpses of him during his rise to prominence in the Union Cavalry to early fame as the acclaimed Boy General; saunter alongside as he courts Judge Bacon's daughter Libby in Monroe, Michigan; march behind him during his daring campaign on the Washita; sit in silent shock during his unwarranted court martial; and watch with growing trepidation as he delivers his forthright testimony before Congress about the mismanagement by the War Department immediately prior to his return to Fort Lincoln and his final campaign in the Dakota Territory. We see Custer through his own eyes, and through the eyes of his devoted wife, and what we view is a portrait of a strong, courageous leader whose skill, gallantry, and wit account for his remarkably successful military career. It is customary in these later years to deny the underlying truth of this view and paint the man in colors few of his contemporaries would recognize. But there are enough artists of history to paint horns where none may have existed; we may suffer the Custers to sketch a faded halo above his engaging visage, and let it serve to counter the later brushstrokes of politically corrected historians and politicians.
Real people's real words yield real insights.......1998-01-14
In studying history and people in history we usually base our opinions on second and third hand descriptions of people. In the case of George Custer, a voluminous writer; we have his book, articles and these edited letters to his wife. While these letters are edited, they do give us insights into the character and personality of this man from which to form our own opinions. Readers will likely react differently to the same passages based on their response to the words expressed. Taken in the context of the society of the time, we can each draw conclusions relative to his intelligence, wit and character. History is considerably more real and more alive when we have such an advantage to get to know its' participants.

picked it up and couldnt put it down.......1999-01-07
saw this book sitting on the coffee table of a friend and as i waited began reading it. the next thing i knew, it was on its way home with me. was never to fascinated by celebrity mothers and children, but i found this book very compelling and it drew my interest immediately. if you are into celebrities behind the scenes get into this book.
Satisfies curiosity of comparing celebs upbringing w/ my own.......1998-12-23
This book was a good read because, let's face it, we all have a curiosity about what propels certain people towards stardom. This book delves into the childhoods of the world's top celebrities, from the destitute to the very privileged, with information derived from actual interviews of the celebs' mothers and/or mother figures. I found Star Mothers very entertaining, informative, and at times, inspiring.
FASCINATING, ENJOYABLE AND INSIGHTFUL.......1998-12-15
I really enjoyed reading about the childhood of some of my favourite stars and why they chose the profession they did. I am a big fan of Cher so I was particularly intrigued by her upbringing. Also the section on Jodie Foster was fascinating. Anyone who has an interest in show business on a more basic level will find this book a very good read.
TRIPE.......1998-10-24
Georgia Holt, Cher's mother, helped to write this book and it shows. Everything is glossed over or sanitized except for what the awful intrusive fans inflict on the poor little darlings. Written alot like a reverse Enquirer, except without it's structure or organization, and written by the stars or the stars flunkies instead of an unbiased and/or rabid reporter.

Customer Reviews:
Only for the newbie.......2007-10-22
Just finished the book last night hoping to find ideas that I could implement in my eBay sales. No real new info here. More geared for the eBay novice. If you have any experience buying or selling on eBay you already know 99% of the info provided in this book.
I found it odd that the author claims to have sold a 4 year old pair of very worn sneakers on eBay for $21 in the beginning of the book and then talks about it again later in the book but the sale price was $26.
Also, the author refers you to links to third party paid services which he owns.
Read this book is one sitting..........2007-10-09
What really stood out for me was the writing style of the book. It was conversational with great stories that were fun and interesting.
Along with great tips, this book is not written in the typical "textbook" format. I read the entire book in less than a day and would definitely encourage anyone to read it!
Simply a GREAT Book!.......2007-10-09
Not only was this book easy to read - the content helped me go from a new eBay seller to an advanced one. I went from 19 feedback to 175 feedback in 60 days using the techniques I learned.
I'd highly encourage anyone interested in learning more about eBay to read this book!
Great eBay book.......2007-06-14
a Gotta Have book if you are planning on starting an eBay business in your home in 30 days. Great reference for the experienced eBayer.
Garbage.......2007-06-08
This book is one big fat advertisement for Ebay and for Adam Ginsberg's other ventures. It had very little useful information, and NO information that cannot be found easily on-line or on Ebay itself. It was a waste of my time reading it. It was utterly repetitive and took forever to actually get to any sort of information or advice. There is hardly enough information in this book to fill a 10 page pamphlet...let alone a 300 page book!!! I'm just happy I got it from the library and didn't end up wasting my money as well as my time.
I wish there was actually a book out there to help people who are not complete ebay beginners. The biggest ebay woe is finding sources for products, and there is little help in this book....OH, unless you want to go to the website Adam plugs and buy more stuff from him. SURE, then he'll help you out. HA, RIGHT!
Book Description
The proof is in the testimonials that have arrived by the thousands: "Yhis is a really great book. It's simple. It's straightforward. We read it. We ran our ad. We got over 100 telephone calls. We sold our home."—John Henke, Boise, ID. "Our real estate broker was green with envy. In 5 days we got 24 bids higher than the highest bid she got us in 11 1/2 years. You're our hero!"—Elizabeth & Tim Hunter, South Berwick, ME. "I had a business opportunity I couldn't take advantage of unless I sold my home immediately. I saw your book in a bookstore and sold my home the next weekend. Thanks!"—Doug Walker, Salt Lake City, UT. "Thanks to your system I sold my home in 5 days at $1.26 million. You saved me $78,000 in real estate commission!"—V., Potomac, MD.
Now in its third edition and timed perfectly to address a challenging real estate market, How to Sell Your Home in 5 Days turns the conventional on its head to present an innovative, practical, and foolproof alternative that makes the market work for you, the seller. Based on the one basic truth of free enterprise—that your home is worth exactly what the highest bidder will pay for it— this step-by-step plan shows exactly how to price your home attractively; make a timetable; write an effective ad; use buyer psychology, price points, and magic numbers to get the best price; and conduct round-robin bidding. It includes new information on the Internet—including a supporting website, www.5-day.com—the most recent testimonials, and updates to every phase of the process, from whether or not to renovate a kitchen before selling to the ins and outs of transferring ownership. Homes sold through the five-day plan sell for an average of 5% more than through conventional sales, plus, the seller doesn't have to pay a broker's fee—making this book among the best deals of the century.

How to Sell a Home is a Perfect Match for Do-it-yourselfers.......2007-08-26
I had a friend who used this technique and I was amazed how it worked just like the book describes. Flocks of people turned out to see the house. He got a round-robin bidding war going on Sunday night, and he sold his house rapidly, without any unnecessary professional help, and for a good price.
This technique is match made in heaven for the do-it-yourself real estate investor.

Hi Highly recommend this book.......2007-06-28
While I haven't utilized the methods he talks about here in the book in theory i know it could work. I wish i had this book two years ago when i was trying to flip a rehab home, it would have saved us a lot of money in holding costs.

Great Book!
Really Works!
Not "Snake Oil"
Not "How to Put Lipstick on a Pig"
Certainly worth the money even if you don't use the method.

I tried it and it works---Great book
Amazon.com
Homeowners who are determined to sell their houses without agents, but who have no time to waste, may want to try the unusual approach detailed in How to Sell Your Home in 5 Days. After many months of failing to sell his house through an agent, author Bill Effros quickly and successfully auctioned it off. He since has sold several houses that way and helped others do the same. This involves placing Wednesday newspaper ads announcing that the home will be shown on the weekend and sold to the highest bidder on Sunday night. Daring as this sounds, Effros has a technique for handling the round robin bidding to elicit a bona fide offer at fair market value. Not for everyone, maybe, but a fascinating lesson in the mechanics and psychology of making an efficient market for a house or anything else. --Barry Mitzman
Book Description
First published in 1993, How to Sell Your House in 5 Days outlined an inspired plan for homeowners to handle the sale of their own houses, and it went back to press 5 times for a total of 65,000 copies in print. But in that time, the author, Bill G. Effros, did two things to make a new edition both desirable and necessary--he personally helped hundreds of sellers a year use the 5-Day Method successfully, and in the process of doing so, he refined and revised his original system.
There's still nothing else like it. Based on the one basic truth of free enterprise--that your home is worth exactly what the highest bidder will pay for it--this better way will enable every seller to make more money in less time with no risk. The step-by-step plan shows exactly how to price your home, write an effective ad, use buyer psychology, and conduct round-robin bidding. But now in the second edition are: more in-depth descriptions of different types of buyers; additional steps to take to prepare a home for sale; a new "What If" troubleshooting guide; detailed instructions for conducting an open house; a new chapter on closing sales; a new chapter for buyers bidding on 5-day sales; a chapter debunking home-selling myths, such as why the season doesn't matter; and an updated chapter on transferring ownership.
Customer Reviews:
where will this work?.......2007-08-08
I had great hopes for this. Ran ads as they said and it costs us hundreds!
Not one called and not one person showed! Total waste of time and money. I'd like to know where this really works!
Concept is gold. Just don't get your hopes up........2007-02-03
The concept of this book makes great sense. However...
POINT 1: First and foremost, ask yourself this VITAL question: When you ACCURATELY describe where you live (as a township or municipality), will that location alone draw attention to your listing with such a low featured price? If the objective answer is "no" then this program will NOT work!!!! St. Louis is plagued by many pockets of unincorporated areas, leaving the homeowner to describe their location in terms of South County, North County or West County.
POINT 2: Using a newspaper to place your "5-Day Sale Ad" is antiquated in most markets. Again, that includes St. Louis. The St. Louis Post Dispatch is a poster child for poor presentation of real estate. Major realtors buy half-page and full-page ads to feature their listings in order of price, not location. For all others (mostly FSBOs), you're left to slot your ad within a tiny municipality that most people have never heard of (even those who live there). And you won't find realtor's listings repeated in these location-specific sections. So guess who looks there? All those who can barely afford your home at its starting bid price.
POINT 3: System doesn't work well in a Buyer's Market. Buyers can sit back and look at a surplus of homes with leisure. Why would they consider jumping into your home if they can't see it until day 4 or 5? Our home spent 6 months on the market in the $200K range using a realtor and attracting painfully few interested parties. We dropped the realtor, dropped our asking price by $15,000. We were then willing to accept $9,000 less than THAT selling by owner. Using this book's method we printed a starting bid at $40K BELOW THAT PRICE. By Friday, when you're supposed to receive a couple dozen or so calls at the minimum, we received only 3 phone calls. Newspapers don't credit you for pulling an ad on day 4. This little 5-day experiment cost us $250.00.
POINT 4: Unless you're in a progressive market, most people just don't understand the concept of a 5-day sale. Especially the real estate agents in my area. If they understood it, they would fear it. Now, if 100 interested parties had walked our home, then I imagine that we could have found 5 parties who understood the concept and would have been willing to play along. We didn't get 100. We brought in less than 20. None of them had done comparisons on the neighborhood. All were clueless.
POINT 5: The book is being revised so WAIT for the new release!!!! The version I purchased (the only one currently available) describes the Internet from a 1998 perspective which says it's not a prominent enough tool to possibly substitute for an ad in a newspaper. As you may have guessed, times have changed. I for one NEVER read the paper for available real estate (mostly out of poor presentation of the paper's real estate section). I use the Internet. I debated posting our home on MLS and [...] websites but you don't review those listings looking for an auction. I feared a massive onslaught of confused Buyers asking what I was trying to pull. Still, it would have attracted FAR more people in this market than our paper could have ever accomplished.
POINT 6: Visit the website associated with this book. It's ALL about buying bundled packages from the author's real estate expert friend. Those packages include listing your home on MLS and Realtor websites. I can't vouch for any of that... just found it to be opposite of what the book preaches. Maybe this will be incorporated into the 2007 edition.
Great book for a Seller's Market.......2006-11-04
A friend recommended the 5-Day method, and I bought the book. It's written like an infomercial, but the logic and methods are reasonable and smart. I was convinced, but I had 3 other people read it too. They had been skeptical of my description of how it worked, but they came away convinced, as well.
The book has a great explanation of the whole house selling process and a great checklist of what you need to do to be ready to put it on the market. However, the book was written and revised during Seller's markets. Prospective buyers were walking around with checkbooks in their pockets so they could be the first to put a bid on houses they liked. It's a different market now, and people don't want to commit on the day they see the house. They know they have time to think, and that's what they want to do.
I still think the method could work, it just didn't for us in these economic times. And we're much better prepared for selling the house using more conventional methods.
Could work but good results?.......2006-09-01
Our company that builds custom exec homes tried this method to move a property & to donate a percentage of net proceeds to charity. Everything went as planned, had 100+ people through, 25+ phone calls by Fri. Even had major newspaper coverage on the event. Made it past the low low starting bids at price but failed to even get to our reserve, which was basically the cost to build the home with a few thousand for our charity. The low starting price brought in people who had no business being there. Even when you advertise as a Exec luxury home, people only see the starting price as a reference. I had one woman screaming at me that I was using deceptive advertising since the bids start at price listed was so low. NUTCASE....It was exhausting, expensive and absolutely insulting with the offers we were getting. Reserve was $65,000 below its appraised value and we came short of the reserve by $30,000. And no one is going to tell me that my house is worth $90,000 below its appraisal. If you are in a good market area or need to sell quickly to get out from underneath a property, this is a good way. But, if I can't get my costs out of a property newly built, that's just sad. Some of it may be due to the markets, but not by that much.
Method works with a little updating.......2006-07-07
I sold my San Francisco condo using this method at market price.
I netted $30-$40k more than if I were to have sold it using the conventional method paying a 5-6% broker commision. Here are the updates I would suggest:
1. use a website service - George Cappony's 5-daysale.com does a great job. The website service should include a way to track the number of hits.
2. If you use a website, expect fewer calls (most people I talked to said they got 5-10). The website does the work for you, and you don't have to be at home to answer calls.
3. Use a minimum undisclosed reserve price to protect yourself. This should be what you think is market price minus the 6% commission you would normally pay. Then make the listing price REALLY low. If people don't say your price is ridiculous, then drop it even more.
4. Place your newspaper ad for 8 days instead of 5 days. Most people only read the Sunday paper, so if you start the previous Sunday, you will get maximum marketing exposure.

Touching and Inspiring.......2007-08-14
Reading this book makes you realize life isn't always easy. I give her credit for revealing her life story to those people who wanted to know more about her upbringing, her family life and life in general. I'm thankful I had the opportunity to read about her life. I've enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to those people who are interested in knowing what a wonderful person Reba McIntire really is.
Reba "My Story".......2007-04-19
I absolutely enjoyed this book. From reading about the high points in her life such as her career, the birth of Shelby and the marriage to Narvel Then reading about the crash in '91 and the divorce from Charlie Battles... It just took me on a complete rollercoaster of emotions. From the moment i picked up the book it felt like i was having a conversation with Reba herself. I could not put the book down. Overall, this was one worth reading.
MCENTIRE EXAGGERATES A LOT!!.......2006-04-16
There are two sides to every story and Tom Carter, the ghostwriter and co-author of this "Norman Rockwellish" biography attempts to help McEntire glorify her position in the annals of country music. There is a lot that leaves to be desired in this book. The truth is greatly exaggerated and I just remember the one hot summer when Reba left her fans standing in the hot sun at fan fair and they began stomping and tearing her pictures to bits!!
THERE'S VERY LITTLE TO BELIEVE IN THIS BOOK!.......2005-09-06
I lost all respect for McEntire when she abandoned her country roots to record what she says "sells". Bah! Then this book came out and she attempts to glorify herself even further!! Her descriptions of what she went through the night she lost her band in a plane crash are sensationalized. No doubt she suffered horrors, anyone would have. But then less than a week later she went on the Academy Awards show to promote herself singing "I'm Checking Out" a song that was nominated from the movie "Postcards From the Edge". I remember that night and while I'm convinced she was grieving over her loss, she was still out to get her name before the public, something she loves to do!! It was in very, very bad taste for her to do this. Then all the malarky about her relationship with her ex-husband and her current husband?? Come on, how stupid does she think we are??? I'll never forget that fan fair year when she left her fans high and dry in the hot, humidity and they tore her pictures to a pulp and stomped on them. With good cause. Yet she goes on to say in this book that she couldn't sign autographs because she couldn't put herself or her precious entourage through the rigors! Well hello!! Then, she has the audacity to say that to quote her "I also think more of my fans than that. I know they were tired". Hah!! If she knew they were tired she would have had someone inform them that she would not be signing autographs before the lines started forming!! I agree with the previous reviewer who says she's a phony. Her own sister had a falling out with her and she even trashes her in the book! Message: Don't mess with this redhead and don't ever get on her bad side. The woman is nuts!!
ANYTHING BY TOM CARTER IS SENSATIONALIZED!!.......2005-08-21
Reba McEntire is an egotist!! Everything she has done has always been about her and how she can get her name publicized. Tom Carter sensationalizes all of McEntire's idealisms and quirks. In a word, McEntire is a phony through and through. I found very little in this autobiography that edified or inspired. As a matter of fact, there were a few things in there that McEntire should admit the truth on....particularly the fact that she was messing around with Narvel Blackstock long before she ever divorced Charlie Battles.
