The Crocodile Hunter.......2006-12-18
"Hold onto their heads while I get their jaws apart." Steve Irwin grew up with his parents and sisters in Australia. His parents started the Beerwah Reptile Park, which later grew into Australia Zoo. Ever since he was a young boy, Steve has helped his dad capture and relocate crocodiles. In September of 1991, Terri and a friend went to Australia for vacation. Terri was introduced to Steve and four months later they were engaged. Immediately after their wedding in June in Terri's hometown in Oregon, they went back to Australia to begin filming the hit TV series "The Crocodile Hunter." They had many adventures all over the world and were running the zoo. On July 24, 1998 their daughter Bindi Sue Irwin was born. They continue to help injured and orphaned animals and teach people to conserve wild life. I really enjoyed reading this book.
I liked that the book told of some of their adventures. One of the trips they went on was to drive along the longest manmade structure, Australia's Dingo Fence. Another was when they had to free climb to a lower edge of a cliff and Terri nearly fell. One of their adventures with a crocodile was when they were trying to move Charlie from a cement enclosure to the zoo.
I also liked that they put animal facts and survival tips in the book without being a distraction. They said that the perentie was the largest lizard in Australia. They also said that ninety percent of fatal snake bites in Australia happen when a person is trying to kill or catch the snake. They said you shouldn't cut, lick, or wash a snake bite so that a doctor can swab the bite to find out if the serpent is venomous and what species it is.
I liked that they gave several descriptive facts about Steve's parents. Steve's dad, Bob, and his mom, Lyn, were both great naturalists and herpetologists. Bob was raised in the state of Victoria by his mom and grandmother during the depression. His father and grandfather both died while fighting the Japanese in the specific. Lyn worked very hard to learn better techniques for rehabilitating marsupials. Lyn and Bob knew each other since they were kids.
Another thing I compliment the book on was that it told of times when they made mistakes or felt embarrassed. When Steve was very young his dad had to push him out of the way because he was stepping on brown snake, one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Another time, Steve caught several red-bellied black snakes and brought them on the bus. His dad was furious and yelled at him right in front of his friends. When Steve and Terri were out catching crocs Terri couldn't keep the spotlight still, resulting in Steve missing the little crocodiles. The lives of Steve and Terri Irwin are never dull and are full of adventure. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in adventure and wildlife.

Book Description
In 1931 John Neihardt traveled to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to interview Lakota elders who had witnessed the Ghost Dance and the Wounded Knee Massacre. He met Black Elk, and their two weeks of intense talks became Black Elk Speaks, one of the most important biographies of an American Indian ever published. Accompanying John Neihardt to help him observe and to take notes were his two daughters, Enid and Hilda. For the first time Hilda Neihardt presents her memories of those interviews. She celebrates the days and nights of storytelling, camping, feasting, and horseback riding with the fresh eyes of a bright fourteen year old. The volume includes never-before-published photographs and answers many questions about the collaboration between the Lakota holy man and her father, called Peta Wigamou-Gke, or Flaming Rainbow. Hilda Neihardt lives on the west bank of the Missouri River near Tekamah, Nebraska. For years a private attorney, she now devotes much of her time to presentations in schools and to service organizations.
Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2003-01-09
Anyone who has ever read "Black Elk Speaks" should put this book "Black Elk and Flaming Rainbow" on their must read list. Written by a woman who was there during the interviews, this book sheds much light on the arguement of whether "Black Elk Speaks" is fiction or non-fiction. It also explains why "Black Elk Speaks" could not have been written exactly as Black Elk had told his story to Neihardt. The book also touches lightly on interviews leading to the writing of "When the Tree Flowered" also by John Neihardt, as well as "The Sacred Pipe" by Joseph Epes Brown. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Lakota culture.

Book Description
This book deals with the role of the State in pension provision as an employer, regulator and provider. Part I deals with problems and reforms of public sector pension systems in OECD countries. The countries covered are Denmark, Finland, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, and the USA. Part II considers the regulation of occupational pension schemes in The Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and whether there is still a role for the State in providing earnings-related pensions in the United Kingdom. Part III presents demographic projections for the next half-century, using Ireland as an example, looks at some of the options which have been used in Finland, and proposed in the United States, to cope with population ageing, and examines issues of intergenerational equity which are posed by these options.
All the chapters deal with recent reforms. The chapters are written by acknowledged experts in their field who are independent of both the pensions industry and Government. Hence the chapters provide an informed critical account of current developments in relation to the reform of occupational pension schemes in the public sector and of the debate about the State's role as a regulator of private pension schemes and a provider of pensions based on the social insurance principal.
The book is important as a source of information about pension schemes in OECD countries. It shows that there is not a unique model of occupational pension provision for public sector employees and that the pension benefits which are provided in different countries are quite variable. It also shows that public sector occupational pension systems have changed and are in the process of considerable further change in a number of OECD countries.

Great Study of the Life of Franz Sigel.......2000-06-01
A very enjoyable look at one of the greatest German Americans involved with the Civil War. Tracks his early days to his time as a commander in the Union Army. Engle provides the reader with a new insight into Sigel's life, with a fresh style that never disappoints. A book that is long over due and finally pays tribute to a forgotten figure of the Civil War. A great addition to a Civil War collection, especially if you are interested in Civil War biographies.

Customer Reviews:
UNDER POLARIS, AN ARCTIC QUEST. By Tahoe Talbot Washburn. Se.......1999-12-29
This marvelous book is a blend of adventure story, scientific diary, and ethnographic study. The author, Tahoe Talbot Washburn, accompanied her husband, Lincoln Washburn, to the Canadian Arctic in 1938-1941, helping him do his graduate field work in the glacial geology of the region. The author was a keen observer of native people and their way of life. She recorded what we now see in retrospect as the waning years of a nomadic way of life for the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Prior to World War II, many Inuit roamed freely across the high Arctic, camping in snow houses (igloos) constructed along the trail at the end of the day. The Canadian Arctic Inuit were still essentially nomads; they did not live in or visit permanent settlements, except for a few important events each year. Accordingly, governmental authorities and missionaries had to go on expeditions to meet with the Inuit. Soon after the war, this pattern changed dramatically, and seemingly irrevocably, towards a more settled way of life. This book is made all the more fascinating because it provides many glimpses into a way of life perched on the cusp of radical change. The Washburns were much more than casual visitors to the Canadian Arctic. They lived there for months at a time, including one extended stay from August, 1940 to February, 1941. They spent precious little time indoors, preferring to move about the Arctic islands, hiking, boating, camping, and dog-sledding in winter. The scientific aim of this multi-year project was to determine the extent of regional glaciation in the late Pleistocene, a much-debated topic of that day. By collecting marine fossils and mapping traces of glacial scouring in bedrock, Lincoln Washburn was able to begin the process of reconstructing the extent of ice sheets during the last glaciation. This thesis project marked the beginning of his long and illustrious career in glacial geology. However, geologic research is only incidental to this book. It brought the Washburns to Arctic Canada, but once there, they fell in love with the land and its people. Both Lincoln and Tahoe relished the arduous Arctic lifestyle, where physical endurance and mental acuity often make the difference between survival and death. They marveled at the ingenuity, patience, and sense of humor that seemed to sustain the Inuit through manifold hardships. Tahoe Washburn spent many months emulating the role of Inuit women, including daily food preparation (for both people and sled dogs), sewing of leather garments, and hide preparation (including chewing caribou hides to soften them). Although limited by not understanding the Inuit language, she learned by observation. Her Native companions appreciated her efforts to follow their ways, and took the time to teach her many skills that few outsiders ever learned. The book is richly illustrated, with 107 photos and six maps. Although the material in the book was taken from diaries, it has been well-edited, never becoming dull or repetitive. I heartily recommend this book to readers interested in the natural history and ethnography of the Arctic.
