5 out of 5 stars Invaluable planning reference.......1999-11-08

Robinson does a great job at laying out all the various factors to be considered in serving this segnment of the retirement market. This book belongs in every serious planner's library.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for planners serving older clients........1999-11-05

As noted in the book's preface, nearly 40 million people are already in the age range of 55-70, a time when one's options for retirement planning become somewhat limited. And more than 2 million baby boomers will join them each year. Clearly, this is an excellent market for planners.

Author Robinson shows how to serve this large and growing market with what he calls a new specialty: retirement financial management practice. And he does an excellent job pulling together various considerations that need to be taken into account: financial projections, determining and maximizing social security, determining and maximizing retirement plan benefits, successful investment strategy for this age group, reducing investment risk, tax rules, and what to do if there isn't enough cash flow.

The author does an excellent job of explaining the various areas clearly. And the included forms are invaluable!

5 out of 5 stars A great, one-of-a-kind resource.......1999-11-04

A great resource which fills a void in retirement planning coverage. This book is exactly what I needed to complete my retirement planning library.

As an attorney with clients at or near retirement age, I searched long and hard for a resource that would help me better serve those clients for whom it it was too late to do any real planning FOR retirement. With Robinson's well-written and researched book, I can confidently and efficiently serve this client base, from calculating whether they have enough to live on, to maximizing retirement benefits, to developing and implementing strategies for maximizing and protecting their nest egg and increase their cash flow as necessary.

And as a busy practitioner, I really appreciate the many forms and checklists included on the accompanying CD.

I wish this resource had been available many years ago when I first opened my practice.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!.......1999-10-07

As a "professional's" guide to retirement financial planning, this book misses the mark. Not only does it fail to cover Substantially Equal Periodic Payment (SEPP)provisions for early (penalty-free) IRA distributions, but it includes an incorrect formula for calculating taxable equivalent yields!

I have seen "beginner" books that contain more meaningful and helpful retirement financial planning techniques than this extremely over-priced book.

      Book Description

One of literature's most enduring figures is revisited in this collection of three essays. Peter Werres' "The Changing Faces of Dr. Faustus" analyzes classic and modern manifestations of the Faustus theme, from Goethe to The Simpsons. A member of a Washington, DC international law firm, James Campbell takes a novel legal approach to the population dissertation of the Faust character in "Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus: Weighing the Testimony of Serenus Zeitblom." The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, a 1919 motion picture with distinct Faustian influences, is creatively examined in regard to the original work in Peter Beicken's "Faust in Film: The Case of Dr. Caligari."

A great collection of essays if you want to know how the legend of Dr. Faustus from a literary and cultural standpoint. I have to say the best essay is the second one, in which a DC lawer weighs the testimony of Sernus Zeitblom, the narrator of Dr. Faustus, by Thomas Mann. If want to do a study of Dr. Faustus and are looking for bibliography, I recommend this book highly!

                        Book Description

Of the three secretaries who assisted President Abraham Lincoln—John G. Nicolay, John Hay, and William O. Stoddard—only Stoddard wrote an extended memoir about his time in the Executive Mansion. First published in 1890, the book vividly depicts the president’s agonizing reaction to the defeats at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, the difficulties encountered (and presented) by Mary Lincoln, the president’s relations with George B. McClellan and other generals, and the anxiety preceding the Merrimack’s epic battle with the Monitor.

In 1866 Stoddard also penned thirteen “White House Sketches” about his time in Lincoln’s service. Originally published in an obscure New York newspaper, these essays—never previously collected—supplement Stoddard’s memoir. Together the memoir and sketches provide an intimate look at the sixteenth president during a time of crisis.

                            Book Description

Garnishing awards from "Choice," "Christianity Today," "Books & Culture," and the Conference on Christianity and Literature when first published in 1998, Roger Lundin's "Emily Dickinson and the Art of Belief" has been widely recognized as one of the finest biographies of the great American poet Emily Dickinson. Paying special attention to her experience of faith, Lundin skillfully relates Dickinson's life — as it can be charted through her poems and letters — to nineteenth-century American political, social, religious, and intellectual history.

This second edition of Lundin's superb work includes a standard bibliography, expanded notes, and a more extensive discussion of Dickinson's poetry than the first edition contained. Besides examining Dickinson's singular life and work in greater depth, Lundin has also keyed all poem citations to the recently updated standard edition of Dickinson's poetry. Already outstanding, Lundin's biography of Emily Dickinson is now even better than before.

4 out of 5 stars Expands the Emily enigma more than it explains..........2006-07-22

I have been obsessed with the life of Dickinson for more than 20 years, and I had high hopes that this author would fill in some gaps that the other 15 or 20 E.D. books had not. In that wish, I was unfulfilled, although the author gives it a great try. I did learn more than I knew before about the "general" protestant currents in Emily's New England between 1830-1880, but the Queen Recluse emerges from Lundlin's examination of her apparent beefs with, and beliefs about, Christianity as still "a puzzlement." For other E.D. compulsives, I think this is a must-own, but for casual poetry fans, it probably is not an essential addition to their shelf. For any serious Emily explorer, Richard Sewell's massive 1974 "Life of Emily Dickinson" remains the Mount Everest that must be scaled, and the most satisfying look at her life, poetry and prose.

5 out of 5 stars Unwrapping a Bit of the Enigma.......2005-10-17

This book is a rarity: a work of biography and literary criticism that isn't a chore to plow through. Roger Lundin's style, unlike that of most academics who pursue the great classics of literature, is lucid and uncomplicated. There isn't, as I recall, a tortured sentence in the entire book.

Besides this not-to-be-discounted virtue, there are other important ones as well. Since the book is guided by Lundin's thesis, which has to do with issues of faith as they are expressed in Dickinson's work, the focus is tight, producing a similarly focused narrative. No time is wasted on speculations about Dickinson's sex life, for example, though the readily verifiable is certainly reviewed in the pages of the book. About Dickinson's relationship with the man she came close to marrying, Otis P. Lord, we'd probably like to hear more. But again, the record is incomplete because much of the correspondence between the principals was destroyed, and Lundin doesn't overstep, sticking to what can be proved.

This is not strictly a critical biography, so those poems tjat Lundin examines are considered only briefly--just closely enough to explain their relationship to his thesis. Lundin chooses judiciously, as he does among the letters and personal accounts centering on Dickinson. Besides, he relates Dickinson's thinking on matters of faith to spiritual and intellectual trends in 19th-century America, and this is among the most important features of the work, especially since he cites a number of noted authorities on the place of religion in American history. If you have any interest in such issues, Lundin's citations will probably send you on a further quest.

Only rarely did I say to myself, "I'd like to hear more about that topic." Lundin develops his thesis with skill and with great sympathy for his subject. He certainly doesn't explain the enigma that is Emily Dickinson, but he moves us closer to an understanding of this frustratingly, fascinatingly complex artist.

4 out of 5 stars A penetrating look at Emily Dickinson's spiritual formation.......1998-12-28

As a lay person, knowing more of Roger Lundin's academic reputation than of Emily Dickinson's life and work, I was intimidated by the prospect of reading his biography of the poet, "Emily Dickinson and the Art of Belief." However, as the foreword assures us, this book is not meant for the "cognoscenti" alone, but for us "uninitiated outsiders" as well. And as the departing shore of the book's introduction became faint, I found only the calm seas and smooth sailing of a real page turner. I was soon fascinated by Dickinson's enigmatic life as Lundin carefully unfolded the practical details of her life in nineteenth century Amherst, as well as her development as a poet, an intellectual, and a religious thinker in an era on the edge of modernity. One of the most poignant themes in the book was Dickinson's progressive reclusiveness--and for all the reasons Lundin gives for it, I wasn't completely satisfied until the very last chapter. A surprising dimension of the book is the discussion of Emily's political, cultural, and religious milieu--which we eventually come to learn is key to understanding Dickinson's discomfiting questions and world view. The only fault I find in the book is not at Lundin's hand, but Emily herself. Though she leaves us in awe of her literary genius and spiritual sensitivity, her seemingly selfish reclusiveness and her failure to ever clearly declare the state of her soul left me feeling sorry for her. Although I have been taught never to judge in these matters, as a Christian I can't help but wonder, "was she or wasn't she?" Did she ever make the leap of faith? Lundin never gives us a definitive "yes" or "no," but yet gives enough data that we can make our own educated determination. I only hope that when I have "forded the mystery" and turn the corner of Heaven, I will find Emily at the feet of Jesus, having set aside her pondering pen, happy and content to finally be a bride. "Emily Dickinson and the Art of Belief" gives me that much hope

This is a great book with many very up to date links that can compliment your real estate purchasing along with using the internet.

He goes through which search engines are best to get to a very specific target as well as many online mortgage sites; bank sites. He goes into all aspects of buying "distressed property" which is something that we specialize in, so we found this a very good book.

Not only did I waste money on this worthless book, I wasted a fortune on trying to sell my home using the advise of this guy. By the time I'm done, what little profit I made will surely go to my attorney to keep the buyers of my home off my back.

Robert Bruss, a Bay Area lawyer and real estate broker, has written a review of this book that appeared 3/11/2000 in the San Jose Mercury News. Excerpts of his review follow:

...one of those rare real estate books that cannot be recommended to highly. Before you buy, sell, finance, auction or invest in real estate, check out the Web sites evaluated by this book. Readers who are not internet savy will quickly feel at home with this book with emphasis on Web site locations and attributes, not computer technicalities. Every homewoner, buyer, real estate investor and agent should have a copy of this book on their desks for easy reference, right next to their computers. That's where I keep mine. On a scale of 1 to 10, this superb book rates an off the chart 14, the highest rating I've ever given to a real estate book.

This book is portraying this bluesman in his own words, but also by the words of many others. It is unfair to label this as a "bad" book just by the fact that it is not an autobiography. And people complain about reading about his life. . . a book about a musician would not be a book if it didn't focus on his life. You can hear the music, but you need to read his life. This is a well written book with many celebrity interviews about this influential artist. I've bought this book for several people with no regrets. . .they don't regret reading it either. They do nothing but rave about it, and that's all that I can do.

I truly loved this book about a legendary bluesman. He seemed to be up-front and honest about his personal life and trials as well as experiences in the cutthroat world of music as business. Interviews-with/comments-from "stars" in the music industry like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Mick Jagger showed just what an indelible mark Taj has made on their lives. Stories from Taj's family were poignant.

The best way for me to describe this book is this. I will simply quote the announcer who introduces Taj on his live album "The Real Thing"..."If you didn't come here with a friend, you have one on the stage right now, Mr. Taj Mahal!".

I am a huge fan of this great artist. But I have a problem with the book. It's not an autobiography. The real author must've cut some sort of deal with taj, because the real writer patiently gathered info from all corners of the earth. The only thing Taj seems to have done is a few lenghty interviews. It was disappointing to read of someone who has been so musically inspiring and yet so flawed as a regular guy. He's fathered over a dozen children by several women, yet the book desperately tries to portray him as a man of integrity and high moral fibre.

Taj has followed in the old bluesman tradition of loving and leaving. His legacy is littered with testimonials of people who desperately want to recognize his goodness, and yet the wounds his lifestyle has left them with are huge.

The New Age, hippie rationales that his 'family' blabs on and on with is almost laughable, unfortunately tragic.

Unless you are a real fan of this musical genius, don't bother with the book. Check out his albums instead.

2 out of 5 stars Despite the title, not an autobiography.......2001-11-28

There are two major problems with this book. First, for someone as passionate about music as Taj, there is very little about Taj's music in the book. Other than the author's experiences at a few shows, there is little discussion of Taj's classic albums. It isn't until page 236 of the 280 page text that we get any substantive discussion of Taj's music. Instead we get overwhelmed with stories of Taj's 15 kids by about half a dozen women. Whether he's at fault or not, it gets really boring reading about Taj's kids and lovers talking about how Taj wasn't there for them.

The second problem with the book is the subject himself. Despite appearing to be a willing interviewee, Taj reveals himself to be one of those people who is simply incapable of answering the question, "How did this make you feel?" When pressed for his feelings on events in his life, Taj invariably steers his answers into discussions on fishing or food or music.

The author obviously made a solid effort to compile an oral history of Taj's life, but would have been better served by focusing less on people's thoughts on Taj himself and more on people's opinions on Taj's music.

                                  Book Description

The Follinglo Dog Book both is and is not about dogs. The dogs are certainly here: from Milla to Chip the Third, we encounter a procession of heroic if often unfortunate creatures who, along with their immigrant masters, led a hard life on the nineteenth-century American frontier. However, if you pick up this book thinking it will offer a heartwarming read about canine experiences, you will find yourself reinformed by the way it unfolds.

Instead, these are the stories of a Norwegian pioneer family that came in 1860 to settle the Iowa prairie on a homestead called Follinglo Farm in Story County, Iowa. In the Tjernagels' experience one may read a chronicle of the state, the region, and the nation. Arriving in Iowa in what was still the age of wooden equipment and animal power, the Tjernagels witnessed each successive revolution on the land. They built homes and barns, cultivated the land, and encountered every manner of natural disaster from prairie fires to blizzards. Through the struggles and setbacks, Peder Gustav Tjernagel's stories sparkle with boyhood pranks and adventures, in which the family dogs frequently play a role.

Readers will discover a cast of Norwegian relatives and neighbors, including a Herculean uncle, Store Per (Big Pete), who could lift a cow by its horns; a mysterious aunt, Stora Fastero (Big Sister), whose arrival signaled that a baby was soon to be born; and Elling Eilain, the walking Lutheran apostle. And, of course, there are the dogs who shepherd, protect, and even baby-sit the residents of Follinglo Farm.

In his foreword to The Follinglo Dog Book, Wayne Franklin, professor of English at Northeastern University, places the book in its historical context and addresses our changing attitudes toward humane treatment of house pets since the nineteenth century. Peter Tjernagel Harstad, Tjernagel's grandson and director of the Indiana Historical Society, provides an afterword to this edition.

The Follinglo Dog Book is part of the American Land and Life Series edited by Wayne Franklin.

5 out of 5 stars A well written reminder of home.......2001-01-25

I'm originally from Iowa, and of Norwegian ancestry to boot, so I took a chance and ordered this book. I'm very glad I did. The book seems to start out slow ... it goes through a pedigree of the Tjernagel family. But when I got to the dog stories, I was glad for the background. The book is thoroughly charming and it put me in mind of stories my grandfather used to tell. Peder Gustav's fine character and humor shine through the narrative and when the book is finished, you wish you lived next door to his ancestors. I believe that even the Danes and Swedes would like this book. O' jah, you betcha
