    Book Description

TIAA-CREF is the largest private pension plan in the world, with more than $260 billion under management, including an estimated 1% of all shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. And yet, while there is a wealth of information on IRAs, 401(k)s and other investment vehicles, until now there has been little guidance for the millions of TIAA-CREF plan participants and their advisors. The TIAA-CREF Book offers the definitive guide to TIAA-CREF for participants, estate planners, and financial advisors. Simply and clearly--and with a droll sense of humor--the authors explain the often complex legal and financial aspects of how the TIAA-CREF plan works, how the investment choices new participants make can affect the funds available at retirement, what the distribution options are for withdrawing money either before or after retirement, and how to leave the fund as an inheritance. For participants in the accumulation stage of their careers, the authors explain the important differences between fixed income securities (TIAA) and equity securities (CREF), and examine the investment choices for both. They address such important issues as how to allocate contributions, how portable an account really is, and how plans differ from employer to employer. In addition to the valuable primer on estate planning--from how to quantify assets, needs, and income to how the Federal Estate Tax affects TIAA-CREF accounts--the authors explore in detail the distribution options available and help weigh the pros and cons of each choice. Drawing on their extensive work in the field of estate planning, the authors cover the gamut of what it takes to make the most out of a TIAA-CREF plan. TIAA-CREF is a registered trademark of the Teachers Insurance and Annunity Association/College Retirement Equities Fund Corporation.

    3 out of 5 stars Can't Judge a Book by its Publisher.......2002-12-08

I am responding to the previous reviewer's disappointment with the book, given that it was published by Oxford U. The days when we could count of the big name university presses to publish only the finest are, sadly, past. It is frustrating not to have the reliable benchmarks. Word processing, the automated printing and publishing process, and the general decline of academic standards - whatever the reasons, we are being swamped with second and third rate monographs from all quarters.

    1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2001-04-12

These authors published two informative articles about TIAA-CREF in a professional journal in 1997 and 1998. Although the articles were intended for estate planners, they can be understood by a lay person who reads them carefully. I expected this book to present the substance of the articles in a more accessible way. It does not. Apart from the section on estate planning, it contains little information not obtainable directly from TIAA-CREF. It shows signs of having been written with haste. It is poorly edited (surprising for Oxford University Press) and is in places inconsistent and unclear. The book is a disappointment.

Several years ago I urged John Seelye to edit this work for Penguin. A couple of years after that, he asked me to do it instead, and I did. This is a remarkable book about a literate Yankee (Higginson "discovered" the poet Emily Dickinson) who "discovers" the South. It's also "about" Black soldiers in a white war, white officers in a Black regiment, self-discovery, rivers, and hope. Much of the imagery and characterization in the movie GLORY seems to have been lifted from this book: it is, after all, a first-hand narrative of war by an idealist sorely tested by politics and physical hardship. Higginson's writing of the book is in part his attempt to deal with what today we would call Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, and it is no wonder that the tone sometimes reminds the reader of Hemingway's "Big Two-Hearted River." Because the teller of this story emerges as an interesting person per se, this edition includes some of his other essays, ranging from his fascination with slave rebellion to his appreciation for poetry.

                      Book Description

Though professional wrestlers are usually ignored by sportswriters and entertainment reporters alike, the popularity of these gifted athletes and showbiz pros is undeniable. Few fans are concerned with whether the wrestling is "legitimate."

From Ace Abbott to Buck Zumhofe, this is the second edition of the first-ever ("major contribution'—ARBA; "most informative"—Wrestling Then & Now) comprehensive compilation of biographical information on professional wrestlers past and present, including major promoters and managers. Each entry is listed under the wrestling name most often used, with cross references to real names and other ring names. The ring name is followed by the grappler's real name, hometown, height and weight, and birth and death dates when available. The biographical data provide the era in which the individual competed, wrestling associations, titles, tag team partners, major bouts and other highlights.

4 out of 5 stars The most complete listing of pro wrestlers.......2003-10-24

I was looking for a book that would be a complete in-depth history of wrestling, but there doesn't seem to be one out there. This book has no photos (except for Lou Thesz on the cover), but it contains short bios of more pro wrestlers than any other book. Unfortunately, only the briefest of bios are provided (it basically lists championships won, with very little personal info provided). Height, weight, & birth dates are provided for some, but not most, wrestlers. Lentz has written some great books on film history for McFarland, but this one is a disappointment due to lack of more info in the entries (which is perhaps not possible given the subject matter). At first I thought this book lacked completeness, but after seeing other so-called wrestling "encyclopedias," this one is certainly the most complete. For example, a major star of the early 1960s, Argentina Apollo, gets no mention in any of the other wrestling books, but is included here. It's very dry reading for a wrestling book, & if you buy this one you should get at least a couple of other books with photos to accompany it. I'd like to see more info included in the entries (at least for the major stars) that would distinguish the wrestlers a bit more than the author has done here (for example, how they were innovative, what their style was, gimmicks used, special techniques, etc.). A worthy addition to your wrestling reference library, but will somebody please write a definitive encyclopedia on this subject? A second edition of this book is due in November 2003, but with only 20 or so additional pages, I doubt if it will expand the entries into what I was hoping for.

                      5 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind reference source.......1999-08-30

My compliments to Mr. Lentz for the wealth of information he was able to unearth on the sometimes mysterious world of professional wrestling. I've been a fan of wrestling since the 1960s and it was great to finally see a reference book that gives information on the "sport entertainers" that have thrilled me and countless others over the years. I flip through it often to find tidbits about current and past mat stars. A truly great job on a difficult subject.

1 out of 5 stars Looks good, but not a factual book on many of the stars........1999-05-25

The old saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover". This book looks good, but beyond the cover is filled with page after page of incorrect information regarding many of the wrestlers. Mr. Lentz certainly didn't take the time to research his information. I have been a collector and researcher of wrestling related items for nearly 40 years, and never have I picked up a book with so many errors in it. My advice is, if you want a book that looks good on your bookself, then this book is for you. But, if you are looking for a book that will provide factual information on wrestlings greatest performers of the past, then pass on this book! Sorry, this is not a reliable source of wrestling information to the serious collector or fan.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding reference.......1998-02-03

Without a doubt, this is THE book to purchase if you are a pro wrestling fan. Filled to the brim with career highlights for over 500 wrestlers from the early 20th century right down to the days just before the formation of the NWO, Lentz has covered it all. I have found it to be an invaluable reference too, and worth every bit of it's price. TC Kirkham, Webmaster SyxxNet

                        Book Description

Global Agricultural Trade and Developing Countries presents research findings based on a series of commodity studies of significant economic importance to developing countries. First, the book sets the stage with background chapters and investigations of cross-cutting issues. Trade and domestic policy regimes affecting agricultural and food markets are described, and the resulting patterns of production and trade are assessed. The book follows with an analysis of product standards and costs of compliance and their effects on agricultural and food trade. An investigation of the impact of preferences given to selected countries and their effectiveness is next. The evidence on the attempts to decouple agricultural support from agricultural output is then reviewed. The last background chapter explores the robustness of the global gains of multilateral agricultural and food trade liberalization.

Given this context, the book presents detailed commodity studies for coffee, cotton, dairy, fruits and vegetables, groundnuts, rice, seafood products, sugar, and wheat. These markets feature distorted policy regimes among industrial or middle-income countries. The studies analyze current policy regimes in key producing and consuming countries document the magnitude of these distortions and estimates the distributional impacts-winners and losers-of trade and domestic policy reforms.

By bringing the key issues and findings together in one place, Global Agricultural Trade and Developing Countries aids policy makers and researchers, both in their approach to global negotiations and in evaluating their domestic policies on agriculture. This book also complements the recently published Agriculture and the WTO that focuses primarily on the agricultural issues within the context of the WTO negotiations.

                          Book Description

Rice has long been one of the most protected commodities in world trade. Now the probable significant liberalisation of trade in rice is likely to have huge welfare implications for many countries dependent on its production and trade, particularly those in South Asia. This book explores the poverty and welfare implications of this liberalisation for India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and identifies the effects on different groups within poor rice-dependent developing countries. This book will be of great interest to researchers and policy makers, in South Asia and elsewhere, looking at the distributional consequences of multilateral trade agreements in terms of poverty and welfare within individual countries.

From the supplier: Cranfield et al. have presented an impressive array of facts to support their predictions on global food expenditures. Their predictions, based on data from the 1985 Phase V international Comparison Project (ICP), are largely correct. Moreover, their fitting of an implicitly, directly additive demand system (AIDADS) with the ICP data is appropriate given their assumptions. However, two critical issues associated with the use of ICP and AIDADS data still need to be elaborated upon: data reliability and fixity.

From the supplier: Coyle et al. have produced research that is both technically noteworthy and complex. Basically, their research aims to identify which factors have contributed most to the steady increase in the demand for value-added commodities in the 1980-1995 period. To this end, they use a general equilibrium model to analyze international trade in agricultural commodities during this period. Their results show that supply and demand factors have been the principal determinants in the increase in trade volume. Their findings have implications for policy makers in many developing countries.

                                          Book Description

Modernity's Pretenses undermines modernity's authority through a cultural and historical examination of texts and thinkers from the Enlightenment to post-Stalinist Europe. Racevskis argues that modernity's elaborate designs for rationalizing the world have mainly functioned as covers and alibis (i.e., pretenses). Modernity's promise to liberate humanity from superstition, injustice, and want has been a tactic for making exploitation seem noble and for lending barbarism an aura of progress. Racevskis examines the mechanisms and history of the pretending that mark the modern world and surveys the critical approaches that have proven most effective in dispelling the credibility of pretenses.

Don't know the relationship between the author and SRV but it seems as if they were friends. This book has a more personal feel to it; different from "Caught in the Crossfire" as an example. As a result, gives a slightly different picture of Stevie. Not better or worse, just different. Not my first choice for SRV biography material, but certainly not a bad one. I'm immersed in a "blues" period and looking for as much information on SRV and other blues artists and this fit in well for that quest.

You know the saying if you catch someone in one lie, what else are they lying about?

In 2005 Jimmy came to my town and played, signed cd's after the show, when It was my turn I asked him about this book and how it says did he beat up Stevie when they were kids if he came home and found out Stevie had touched his guitars. And flat got "miffed" and said no, thats a lie, the things they put in books to help them sell.

Good enough for me. And I rem reading this book with eyes wide open, as SRV is the man. Seen him 3 times in concert. I am in my 40's

Oh, before I got in line, I stood at the side of the table, just watching him sign, about 10 feet away, chatting with my friends, then I noticed Jimmy's side profile, freaked me out, looked just like STEVIE! No lie these boys was BLOOD BROTHERS! He looks like a bad A** too. Bet Jimmy and Stevie would of been gun slinger outlaws in another time past! He shook my hand and his "strenth" felt like when you shake someone who lays bricks for his life. I have only felt that kind of strenth a few times in my life of who knows how many hand shakes. Watching Stevie on dvd all these years you can see what I mean.

I really wanted to ask him if he plays Number 1, The wife, I just could not do it. That Fender has got to be the most expensive guitar in the "world" I bet its over $1 M. A price cant even be put on it, for Jimmy will never sell it. No way that geetar is coming up in any auction of any kind.

How we all miss this man, see you in heaven Stevie, free concerts! Think they will be crowded??!! weeeeeeeee

Of all the books out there about SRV, this one is still my fav. Keep going back to it again and again through the years, and my copy has completely fallen apart due to the publisher's poor quality binding glue! Other than that, Taylor did a nice job with the cover and tons of great photos inside.

But the true appeal of this book is that author Keri Leigh writes about Stevie with so much love and admiration for her subject, who was also her friend. But she never falls victim to the worshipful attitude so many authorized biographers take; rather she hits the darkest times of his life head-on, not shying away from his long years of alcoholism and drug abuse. Leigh is clearly inspired by SRV's recovery from addiction, and the way she writes about this will surely inspire others, too.

The book also features many rare interviews with Vaughan, his friends (some even dating back to childhood in Oak Cliff), lovers, bandmates, and fellow bluesmen and women. Unfortunately, as the author states in her introduction to the book, neither the Vaughan family or Double Trouble took part in the making of this book, because they were at the time planning a book of their own and wanted exclusivity. Still, Leigh does a great job assembling memorable quotes from Jimmie Vaughan and Stevie's bandmates, even if she didn't get to conduct new interviews with them. The other interviews she includes more than make up for it.

After reading this book, you'll feel like you knew the man personally. And if you already love SRV, you'll love him even more!

This book is written by Keri Leigh, who was actually chosen to do the job by SRV himself just before he died.

Keri's done a beautiful job. When you read it, there's just NO doubt, she loves the music, and Stevie Ray too. She has, however, also managed to get the dark side of SRV's life in there too. All in all a brilliant job. Well-written, and her love of the music is a great comfort when the story gets too sad.

I loved every second of the book as I read it. It is an absolute MUST HAVE for any SRV fan out there. Get it A.S.A.P.!!!

This has some dazzling reviews of untaped concerts from SRV and DT. Also it has lots of information on Stevie Ray's life with other bands, Jimmie Vaughan, girlfriends, parents etc. Keri Leigh was a friend of SRV's and his chosen biographer. Hower this book does have big problems. The quality of the literal material like the binding of the book has almost completely fallen apart since December of 2000. I only read it once! Also, there is no direct interviews of any of the 4 members that past through Dt. Not Tommy, Chris, Jackie Newhouse or Reese. And no interviews from Keri of Jimmie Vaughan either. Only quotes from other publications, no real stories. That seemed alot less personal and to add to it, Keri Leigh his ''friend'' really didn't have any anecdotes of her own of Stevie Ray to tell. I loved the book in general though, and actually shed tears a few times, however was surprised in many of the things I just mentioned. Also, there were a massive amount of typos through here that just don't show up in professional books usually. There were great sections on the Vaughan brother rivalry and Srv and Bonnie Rait and Buddy Guy though. There were definetely some mysterious happenings with Stevie and the last few months of his life. Many horrifying coincidences. There was plenty talk of Stevie's amps and strings and so forth that should be interesting to any electric guitar player. That was a redeeming quality not to be overlooked. There were some odd choices in pictures here, but 80 percent of them were worthy of making into posters, that's how good they are. Another good reason to get the book. You get a real sense of Stevie's feelings of inadequacy and vulnerability, as Keri quotes him talking about his idols and his manner towards them. I really did expect far more rhetoric about Albert King who really did have more respect than King Fans might be able to imagine. Albert didn't give much credit to more than a few bluesman, [particularly guitarists] but as he said on the In Session album and Tv show- something like this anyway- '' Lots a guitar players out here. They play loud and they play fast-don't concentrate on no soul... But you Got 'em both....You pretty good.'' And so on. But only a few lines of Albert show up here. That was surprising. All in all, if you're a fan you shouldn't be dissappointed with what is there, and should get lots of enjoyment out of it too. However if you only want one book about Stevie, remember that this one does have some faults though lots of good reading. Also There is quite a large portion of the pages devoted to keeping you up with the Jimmie Vaughan, The Thunderbirds, and many Austin players to grow up with SRV and their intertwining timelines.

                                                          Book Description

Texas is the honorary home of roadhouse music, and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan its uncrowned king. More than just a biography and musical exploration of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Roadhouse Blues tells the stories of the great Texan musicians that came before him and influenced him so deeply. It puts in context Stevie Ray's rise to fame - including the part played by his family, his friends, his heroes (like Jimi Hendrix), and his addiction to drink and drugs - as well as the lasting impact that his brief but turbulent life and work had on his contemporaries, and on later generations of blues fans and guitar players.

                                                            Book Description

Originally published in 1932 as Red Mother, this book was perhaps the first record of the women’s side of Indian life, and it has become a classic work in its field.

Pretty-shield told her story to Frank Linderman through an interpreter and using the sign language. A medicine woman of the Crows, she was one of the few who remembered what it was like before the white man came and the buffalo went away. She tells about the simple games and dolls of an Indian childhood and the duties of the girls and women—setting up the lodges, dressing the skins, picking berries, digging roots, cooking. From her account we learn about courtship, marriage, childbirth and the care of babies, about medicine-dreams, the care of the sick, and the dangers and joys of womanhood among men whose lives were spent in hunting and fighting.

This biographical information about Pretty Shield, a Wise One of the Crow was originally compiled and published in the 1930's by Linderman. This book is the third reprint of the original story and contains a new preface by Alma Snell (Pretty Shield's granddaughter) and Becky Matthews. Linderman was called Sign-talker by the Crow due to his insistence that his interview subjects spoke in signs even when a translator was present. His earlier biography about Pretty Shield's clansmen, Plenty Coups, gained him unprecedented respect and admiration within this clan.

Due to this distinguished reputation, Pretty Shield was willing to tell Linderman stories about her seventy-four years and about the lives of women before and after the coming of the White men and the decline of the bison herds. Pretty Shield is uniquely candid describing daily activities of women that are rarely recorded. Moreover, she describes specific incidents illustrating traditional Crow behavior and conduct. Many of these sometimes humorous, sometimes heart breaking stories demonstrate both negative and positive examples of such customs, often with Pretty Shield herself being in the wrong.

In addition to narrating these stories about Pretty Shield's youth, family, marriage, and the raising of her children, Linderman also records his impressions of Pretty Shield and her life at the time of the interview. This information not only illustrates how traditional Crow ideals relate and are translated into the more modern lifestyles of Pretty Shield and her grandchildren but also allows a view into the personality of a very unique woman.

Pretty-shield is a touching biography that will be enjoyed as a recreational read. Nonetheless, this book also contains important rare incites into the lives of traditional and modern Crow women. Thus, the book is suitable for those interested in learning a little about traditional native life as well as those researchers looking for detailed information about the changing lifeways, traditions, and belief systems of the Crow during this transitional period. This book contains unprecedented candid information about this time from a viewpoint rarely recorded presented in an entertaining, easy to read, meaningful way. That the author also wrote a book on the male perspective from the same native group, simply adds to the potential importance of this resource.

                                                            3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing........2007-02-27

Based on the title and the editorial reviews, I was expecting (and hoping) to read about Pretty-shield's life as a healer, and more about the customs of her tribe. Instead, a lot of the stories were about things she did as a child and teen, mostly how she got into trouble and silly things she did with friends.

On the positive side, it's an easy read, and would be a good introduction to Native American life.

I was engrossed with Pretty Shields story from the moment it began. It was wonderful to read of a native woman's life, before "the buffalo went away". Life then was simpler and so full of joy, as well as so many hardships, but the spirit that is brought across is inspiring and uplifting. A wonderful and engrossing read from beginning to end. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in Native studies, feminism, or simply life, before we came along.
