Book Description
Jerry Weissman, world-renowned guru of the corporate presentation and best selling author, offers everyone, even absolute beginners, the benefit of his experience and expertise in crafting and delivering unforgettable speeches. Using the author's practical advice and step-by-step methods, anyone can master the difficult task of communicating a call-to-action to others, be it a new customer, an employer, or an audience of hundreds.
The key to Weissman's philosophy is discovering what in the presentation represents the "Aha!" moment for the audience. Instead of focusing on flashy PowerPoint gimmicks or crafting facts to prove a point, this book walks the reader through the entire preparation process from brainstorming ideas and creating a story to preparing the slides and delivering the speech.
Using case studies from his work with companies like Yahoo!, eBay, Intel, Intuit, Cisco Systems, and Microsoft, Weissman demonstrates the techniques that have won him the respect and confidence of high-power CEOs from around the world. After using this book to craft a high-quality message, even the most timid beginner will perform like a top-dollar, persuasive presenter with the audience feedback to prove it.

True Beginners: "Buckle Up!".......2005-08-04
Jerry Weissman's book is a product of his experience coaching high profile professionals but is it really a book for beginners? Parts of it are. He identifies three "must have" skills to organize presentations. He discusses Five Sins of presenters any one of which can undermine an otherwise good presentation. He uses Stephen Covey as leverage in making the point to prepare each presentation with a clear goal in mind at the onset. His advice to heed the need of the audience is wisdom for the experienced as well as the unexperienced.
The bulk of the text includes helpful guidance that can contribute to winning presentations after a great deal of practice. However, true beginners will probably find it far in advance of what they are wanting. The cover of the book exclaims, "No prior public speaking experience necessary!" That may be true for people with high self-confidence or for those who are in authority over their audience. For the true beginners I have seen in team meetings, civic clubs, and Toastmaster meetings, those who approach the front of the room with fear and trembling, the guidance needed is more basic and more at the level of survival. True beginners typically need help in topic selection, thought organization, posture, verbal pacing, effective eye contact, and other "front of the room" basics.
I like Weissman's theme that successful presentations are essentially stories. The book struggles to maintain the focus of that theme by distracting the reader with talk about brainstorming, linkages, and flow structures. The story here is that the book can be a valuable resource for the beginner after you have mastered some basics. Of course, at that point you would no longer be a beginner. A word to the wise for true beginners: as you start the book, buckle up for a challenging read.
Never Mind the Quality - Feel the Hype.......2005-07-07
This is one of those books that poses more questions than it answers. The biggest question being:
Whoever decided this book was appropriate for "absolute beginners"?
Because that's one of the things it certainly isn't.
Seeing that this is just one book in a series - like "XXX For Dummies" - I suspect that the title has far more to do with giving the book a uniform appearance than with the contents.
Second question - did the big name half of the writing team that produced this book (that's Jerry Weissman) bother to read the finished manuscript? The reason I ask is that the hype at the front of the book (page xi - which has the wrong page header, by the way) claims that:
"Jerry Weissman is the world's number-one corporate presentations coach"
Yet several of the anecdotes in the body of the book suggest that his "coachees" forget everything he has supposedly taught them and have to call him in again when they want to do another presentation. Good for business, perhaps, but I wasn't exactly reassured about the quality of the teaching I was likely to get from this book. And sad to say, I my expectations were fully met.
Which brings us to the third question - why was it necessary to strew the text with stories about Mr Weissman and this or that big-name company board member? Are we supposed to be so dazzled by this array of senior business people that we overlook the quality of the teaching? A little blowing of one's own trumpet is fair enough, but the seemingly continuous name-dropping in this book is so far "over the top" that it goes from being 'incredible' to being 'uncredible' - in this reviewer's opinion - long before the book is even halfway through.
Which raises the next question - why is the book so long?
In fact the main text is just over 200 pages long, but for many of those pages the text consists of far too much waffle and far too little information.
Now this is not to say that the book doesn't contain "any" accurate or useful information. It does, but nothing like enough to warrent reading through the acres of waffle that constitutes a majority of the text.
Which is why I suggest the book is in no way suitable for "absolute beginners."
It seems to me that if you are just getting started as a presenter then you want something as succinct as possible, which covers all the basic points you need to know as briefly as possible so you can get on with actually putting the information to work. What you get here is the opportunity wade through pages of "what I told The Chairman of the Board at Mega Corp. in nineteen hundred and frozen stiff," and a few useful guidelines.
If you enjoy reading about someone else's experiences - and you have the time for such luxuries - then you might enjoy this book. If you want a genuine "nut and bolts of presenting skills"-type book then I'd recommend "Successful Presentation Skills" by Andrew Bradbury. It has to be one of the best, and most comprehensive, books on the subject that I ever bought.

Book Description
This new edition of Brown’s Boundary Control and Legal Principles–the classic surveying and land law reference–is significantly revised to reflect the latest advances in the field, while providing new insights into the historic basis for boundary determinations. It addresses new changes to laws of boundary evidence; locating easements and reversions; and ownership, transfer, and description of real property. The latest information on the technologies advancing boundary law is covered, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and their impact on surveying measurements. A wealth of case studies on federal and state nonsectionalized land surveys demonstrates real-world examples of covered material.

Ordering directly from amazon saved money, and the book was in brand new and great condition.
beyond the books.......2007-07-29
This publication covers a preponderance of topics to provide objectivity to what can be a highly subjective matter. Concepts and principles are delineated in meaningful ways and the applications are expounded upon.
A must for all persons involved with land management, use, development, and preservation.

The Surveyor's Bible.......2002-12-29
While preparing for my licensing exam, I read this book from cover to cover. It addresses every principle of retracement (sequential and simultaneous conveyances), public lands, and riparian issues thoroughly. The highlighted "principle" at the heading of each new topic makes remembering the main points simple. I can honestly say that every question on the NCEES exam that dealt with general principles and practice was answered in this book. I passed on my first sitting, and this book was one of the main reasons why. If you can only study one reference, this is it. Every practicing surveyor should also refer to it regularly.

Book Description
Progress in combating unemployment is uneven across countries, and the OECD-area unemployment rate will only decline very slowly through 1999 to about 7 per cent, or more than 35 million job-seekers. Therefore, reducing unemployment and expanding job opportunities remain a high priority. New approaches for an employment-centred social policy must be developed to tackle high unemployment and meet equity goals. Beyond the short-term prospects, this issue of the Employment Outlook provides insight into the measures which can help to increase jobs and reduce unemployment in the long run.
Recent developments highlight the problems faced by the jobless in households, as almost 20 per cent of working-age households have no adults in employment. This proportion has increased almost everywhere over the last decade.
Minimum wages help reduce inequalities in wages and incomes but, if set too high, can also cause employment losses among teenagers. They are neither "the" solution to overall family poverty nor the general scourge on jobs that opposite sides proclaim. As part of a coherent package of policies, they can be beneficial in moving towards an employment-centred social policy.
Youth labour market problems are in the forefront of employment policies, as people's initial foray into the world of work is, for many, a harbinger of their future. While many factors influence the transition from school to work, countries with strong apprenticeship systems tend to do best in successfully integrating youth into employment.
Ageing workforces raise major economic challenges that can be turned into opportunities. "Active ageing" will become a reality if labour markets, entreprises and workers have the means and incentives to adapt and make the most of older workers' skills while guaranteeing them adequate standards of living.
Working time trends reflect developments such as the recent reversing of the downward trend in hours of full-time workers in some countries, a widespread increase in part-time work, but much less increase in other forms of "flexible working". Analysis concludes that legislated reduction in working hours alone cannot be counted on to reduce unemployment.
Long-term policies building on these grounds should be developed, combining labour market, educational and social policy reforms. An appropriately set minimum wage in tandem with in-work benefits should help implement an employment-centred social policy, but work is urgently needed on how to design such a package. Over the long run, investing in human capital deserves special attention because enhancing workers' productive potential, especially for the least advantaged, is central to increasing their material well-being and to strengthening the social fabric.

MEET
PETER ALSON
An overeducated underachiever, he's spent his postcollege decades doing his best not to grow up. Now, having just turned the incomprehensible (to him) age of fifty, and staring down his own mortality, this rambling- gambling bachelor decides it's time to settle down. After years of equivocating, he pops the question to his longtime girlfriend. A wedding date is set for just after Labor Day, and to pay for it, a plan is hatched involving poker and a trip to Vegas.
Alson boards a plane bound for the neon desert on his way to the biggest game in town, the 2005 World Series of Poker. Thus begins Take Me to the River, a first-person account of one inveterate gambler and bad boy's quest to grow up while at the same time compete with more than 5,000 players vying for over $56 million in prize money during a scorching Vegas summer.
Take Me to the River is a hilarious, heart-wrenching tale of Las Vegas and an exploration of what it means to be part of one of the fastest-growing and most popular sports in the United States, at the moment of its apogee, and of the lessons that poker has to teach about probability and luck, good and bad fortune, patience, perseverance, and -- most fitting for a man with marriage in his near future -- commitment.
Customer Reviews:
Boring.......2007-07-18
I had a hard time getting thru this book for 2 reasons. First reason-peter Alston seems like a complete and total jerk to me. Taking a prostitute's phone number, jerking a girl around re: wedding plans (at the age of 50), etc. Second reason i did not like this book is that Peter managed to make the WSOP boring. I wish he described the players we've come to know and love (and hate) on Tv in more depth instead of going into such detail about his loser friend.
Nice for the Wannabes.......2007-07-01
As someone who loves watching tournaments on TV and has read all the big books about the world of poker (think Positively Fifth Street not Super System), it's a great read that gives you a real sense of what it's like to be around the WSOP. Because the author has his ego firmly in check, we get a sense of what it's like for the nameless/faceless who still have a pretty good game. The biographical stuff works pretty well, too. Good stuff.
Very Fast Read.......2007-03-12
When I like a book I read it fast, I sped though this book at almost record speed. The ending was a bit lackluster, but the ride getting there was alot of fun. The characters in the book carried it, the best part is that they are all real people.
Great Diary .......2007-02-03
Peter Alson's Take Me to the River is essentially a diary of his weeks in Vegas, playing in and reporting on the WSOP 2005. But we get more; insights into his romantic life, his interactions with his poker friends, and some snippets of history. Well paced, extremely entertaining, I could not put it down !
loved it.......2007-01-27
This book was well written and really held my interest. If you have the dream of someday playing in the Main Event, you must read this book.
Book Description
Millions of parents struggle to grasp what goes on in their kids" heads, on their computers, and among their friends. As an education correspondent for U.S. News he discovered astonishing crises and surprising truths. He focuses on four remarkable kids who run the demographic gamut: a southern girl whose privileges cannot save her from sinking into drug abuse and unsafe sex; the self-destructive son of teachers grappling with his anger about being adopted; a black kid from a tough New York neighborhood who is silenced by consuming depression; and a once high-achieving Florida girl broken by the death of her mother. While uncovering what drove these kids and their parents to Swift River, Marcus opens the black box of the teenage mind. As he reveals the intense, dramatic process that sets most of these kids right, he weaves a taut, absorbing tale and charts a path to hope that any kid, any parent, can take.
Customer Reviews:
If you're a parent worried about your teen, read this book.......2007-09-02
Although my children are grown, I'm still interested in learning about adolescence in this country, not the least because we now have four grandchildren. This book chronicles 14 months in a "therapeutic" school for "troubled" teenagers. It sheds a lot of light not only on how these types of school work with kids, but on the young people themselves, as well, of course, as their families. I am always taken by books that fairly portrays all sides of an issue. This book does this extremely well. While the therapeutic school in question is a profit making one, the teachers and some administrators are passionate in their desire to help the students. Unfortunately, as this is real life, while most kids seem to improve, not all do, and even among those who do, the "outcome" is not necessarily what the parents would hope. Sometimes there are truly miraculous "recoveries" and if I were a parent at the point of sending my child to this type of an institution, I could do nothing, but hold our hope that my child would be one of those. At the end of the book, the author outlines the key questions to which he sought the answers through writing the book. He addresses what he learned and can pass on to other parents through his writing. He also lists the warning signs the parents of the Swift River students he wrote about realized their kids had displayed by eighth or ninth grade. These are things that every parent should open his or her eyes to if they wish to help their kids sooner rather than later. (pg 314 of the hardcover edition).
Missed the point.......2007-03-26
This book didn't work for me. It didn't really have any workable suggestions. Just so-so.
Riveting and Helpful.......2007-01-12
If you have a troubled teen, this is a book you won't be able to put down. If you are thinking of sending your teen away for help, this book will give you lots of things to consider. If you'd just like some ideas on how to better relate to and maybe help your teen, there are endless ideas in here.
A real look into the minds of some troubled teens.......2006-11-23
From my standpoint, this book was not written to be an expose on therapeutic schools. It was not written to tell you what the staff/parents/etc could have done to have better results. It was not written to tell you how to fix your teen. Simply, it is a glimpse into the lives of some trouble teens that were sent to the same place at the same moment in time. And with that in mind - the author produce a moving and real portrayal of his observations.
As a parent, I found this book to be memorizing. Not only when I look at my teenager, but also when I remember my tremulous teenage years. Marcus manages to capture the heart of these kids and their individual struggles.
He does not offer solutions, but rather (and more accurately IMHO) states that sometimes there are no right and wrong answers. That raising kids does not always boil down to the latest research and/or ideology on parenting. In the end, teens must choose their destiny and quite blaming everything on everyone else. Only then, do they have a chance to overcome the multitude of challenges that one must face in our society.
Excellent book. I can not recommend it highly enough.
does not ask any questions.......2006-11-04
While this book comes across as a warts and all look at one of the big players in the teen help industry it fails to ask some really fundamental questions.
What would have been a less harsh and equally effectvie solution for jerome, the boy who had never touched an illicit drug and who only needed greater attention academically to thrive? Why was his mother not encouraged to look at the alternative school that he ended up at first? Is there a potential danger in putting a naive and socially struggling kid from the suburbs in a place with world weary drug taking sophisticates? Would it be culturally appropriate for a hispanic girl with devout catholic beliefs to have to confess her sexual sins publically?
This book also presents the kids relapses as an unfortunate accident without extensively delving into why. It strikes me that Trevor, the witty and easygoing Englishman never really learnt how to survive outside of the highly artificial world of ASR. Perhaps this was because it did not give him the self worth to refuse to engage in behaviours extreme enough to be lifethreatening or the practical tools to say no to a very real and strong temptation.
And what of the staff? Only one line was devoted to the fact that the enthusiastic English teacher left claiming the only thing she loved about the place was the kids. Why was this so?
And whhat is the effect of such a high turnover of staff on vulnerable troubled young people? DJ the ADD adoptee began a down hill slide when his favourite PE teacher Big Mike abruptly left.
Finally it does not question at all the morality of the programme. Actively punishing harrdworking kids such as Jerome for not turning in their friends when they confide in each other does not teach loyalty or strengthen friendship. It comes across as meanspirited and unjust. Does any school have the moral right to tell a mother what she should or should not put in a letter to her child?
While this book is quite clear about what goes on at a therapudic boarding school it asks no questions at all about the controversial aspects of the industry and presents it as without controversy

Book Description
Alone among the greatest vocalists and song-writers in American music. Al Green has fused these opposing concepts into an intense and original sound that transcends the divide between the sacred and the profane. With an extraordinary appeal that has continued unabated since the mid-seventies, this quintessential soul and man remains one of the most enduring, electrifying, and enigmatic artists of our era-a man who has walked the tightrope between the devil's music and God's calling and lived to tell the tale.
Now Al Green's tale is told for the first time in Take Me to the River, his inspiring, unsparing, and ultimately transforming autobiography. From a sharecropper's shack in Jacknash, Arkansas, to the absolute pinnacle of show business success, it chronicles the career of this gifted singer in rich and never-before-revealed detail. From his early days on the gospel and R&B circuits and his fateful encounter with legendary producer Willie Mitchell to a harrowing account of the attempted murder and suicide scandal that made headlines worldwide, this is the whole story, straight from the man who knows best. But Take Me to the River is more than a standard-issue rags-to-riches saga. The epic spiritual struggle for the heart and soul of Al Green is brought to life with all the urgency and immediacy of his music. A story of repentance, redemption, and renewal, the life of Al Green is a moving account of one man's journey to personal, creative, and spiritual wholeness.
Customer Reviews:
Take it to the river, Leave it there!.......2002-09-05
Huge Al Green fan, yet greatly disappointed in this book. For some reason, I did not feel total truth and sincerity was put into writing this book. And who was the editor! The numerous typos only led to further frustration. I have always respected Al Green for who he was- the church boy gone secular who never lost his ability to interpret any tune with gospel fire and conviction. The Hollywood side of Al has always been visible- to everyone but himself- and it is still prevelant as I watch him on numerous television events singing his hits of old. I was not fascinated by this read and I would suggest that you borrow this book from the library or a friend before making the purchase.
Thoughts on Take Me To The River.......2002-03-03
I believe that one of the most interesting aspects of the book is Al's discussion about his upbringing in an intensely religious home, and how this conflicted with his worldly aspirations. His story in a sense is not unlike many of the stars of his generation who were brought up in the church, and found themselves at odds with their parents world view. The chapter that illuminated on the Hi recording sessions at the Royal Studios in Memphis was spectacular. The book even provides a great run down of the stars on the Hi label - a record label that has not received the respect it is due. By the way, Al Green's producer Willie Mitchell is a genius. He turned Al Green into a superstar. However, I must say I found the book wanting. I thought the pictures in the book were one's that most of us who have followed his career have seen over and over. In addition, there are no pictures of him as a child, or even of his own family (wife and children). If you expect this book to be reveal any of the struggles that he has dealt with on a personal level, you will be sorely disappointed. He glosses over his own personal family life. The book paints a nice surface potrait of Al, but really does not go much beyond that.
Fascinating, but..........2001-12-26
I found "Take Me To The River" to be very eye-opening, in terms of the amazing range of experiences that Al Green has had, and as to his development as an artist. It was the later part, that interested me the most. Having been a fan of his, since "Tired of Being Alone" changed the course of soul music, in 1971, I was most fascinated by his accounts of his working relationship with Willie Mitchell (who I consider an unsung genius of popular music), and with the Hi Records rhythm section, one of the greatest groups to ever make a record.
I also found the book to be very well written. I have two major complaints though. First of all, as another reviewer has pointed out , (and I'm amazed that it's only been one), the book looks like it wasn't edited. I have never read a book with so many blatant typos, in my life! Harper Collins should be ashamed (and should make a recall, have the book edited, and send everyone new copies.)
My second objection is much less cut-and-dried: I was recently involved in the production of an event at which Mr. Green was given a Lifetime Achievement Award, and not only did he not show up, but didn't notify anyone until the day of the event, that he would not be there, leaving many people in a very awkward position-and leaving a very unsatisfied audience at the Apollo Theater. He had been aware of the award and of the event, for at least a month, and had confirmed the fact that he would attend.
The fact that he didn't show up was an insult to the organization making the presentation, as well as to the house full of people who were expecting to see him...Even worse, this isn't the first instance of his not showing up for a scheduled appearance, that I know about. I must say, that knowledge of actions like these, made me read certain sections of "Take Me To The River" with more than a grain of salt...
For Music Lovers, An Inspiring Read.......2001-01-21
For the truly musically inclined, this book will touch your soul. Al Green's love of music is more than just words and songs, it goes to the core - the everyday sounds of life. True music lovers will identify with his use of poetic imagery to describe the impact music made throughout and how blessed his life has been through this gift. While I found the first half of the book, which covered his childhood thru his beginnings as a solo artist, absolutely engrossing, the second half felt a bit rushed. There was a need for more to fill in the details of his later years. I do commend Green and Seay for leaving out the gory details of life on the road and the wild stories that came with it.
Al Green Took Me to the River.......2001-01-12
Al Green's new autobiography, written in 2000, is a riveting story for anyone who has ever been curious about Al Green, how he came to be a famous soul singer, and the story behind his music. I was hooked on this book from the moment I picked it up. It was easy to read and very entertaining. He starts off describing his childhood and his experiences in Jacknash Arkansas as the middle child of a sharecropping family. He tells about his parents whom he loves very much and how they had the courage to sell everything they had and move north for a better life. "Al," he said, "go wake up your brothers and sisters. Tell them to get dressed and start packin." Al explains how much he learned from his parents and how much he respects them for taking this gutsy move. His childhood was hard but he pursued his dream of becoming a soul singer and when he teamed up with legendary producer Willie Mitchell, he was on his way. This autobiography tells of his rise to the top of the music industry, his attempted murder and suicide, his immense struggle between his religious side and his secular side, and how this struggle is reflected in much of his music. Al eventually chooses God over his million dollar career but left us with some of the best soul music ever recorded. I was very surprised at the candor with which Al told the details of his life, good and bad. He talked as honestly about the problems he had with drugs and money as he did about his numerous successes. It made his story sound very earnest and sincere. He covered all the bases of his life and answered all the questions I had about the artist that I have been listening to for many years. The only negative about this book was that it wasn't longer. I was not ready for it to end and have a strong desire to read as much more as I can about him. I am only 17 years old but have been listening to Al Green for over five years. This book was very well written and very interesting to me. I am sure it will be just as riveting for other fans.

4 True Crime books by Ann Rule. Empty Promises and You Belong To Me are a collection of her crime files. These are Ann Rule's True Crime Files Vol. 2, and 7.
Every Breath You Take: In perhaps the first true-crime book written at the victim's request, Ann Rule untangles a web of lies and brutality that culminated in the murder of Sheila Blackthorne Bellush-a woman Ann Rule never met, but whose shocking story she now chronicles with compassion, exacting detail, and unvarnished candor. Although happily ensconced in a loving second marriage, and a new family of quadruplets, Sheila never truly escaped the vicious enslavement of her ex-husband, multi-millionaire Allen Blackthorne a handsome charmer-and a violent , controlling sociopath who subjected Sheila to unthinkable abuse in their marriage, and terrorized her for a decade after their divorce. When Sheila was slain in her home in the presence of her four toddlers, authorities raced to link the crime to Blackthorne, the man who vowed to monitor Sheila's every move in his obsessive quest for power and revenge.
Green River Running Red: This is the extraordinary true story of the most prolific serial killer the nation had ever seen-a case involving more than 49 female victims, two decades of intense investigative work...and one unrelenting killler who not only attended Ann Rule's book signings but lived less than a mile away from her home.
