2 out of 5 stars Selling Corporate Aviation!!!.......2006-02-25

I read the first half of the book and during the entire course of the book, all the author does is "See Corporate Aviation". I would not recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to get insights into the working and economics of corporate aviation. I guess the author wrote the book to popularise corporate aviaiton.

4 out of 5 stars NBAA Guide Expansion.......2005-10-15

There are a very few books covering the Corporate Aviation Management topic.I had been waiting for some corporate aviation material for a while, because the existent texts were not updated with the new facts and changes of the business aviation since the 9/11 events.

I think the author has done a great and serious job putting this information all together.I purchased the book with very high expectations and I must say that I was not disappointed. The contents are well organized and elaborated.

The book is written from a realistic perspective with many references to official sources (FAA, NBAA, etc) and other text books.Although not in deep detail, the book covers all the aspects of a corporate flight department, from planning to operation to maintenance to legal issues, making it, I believe, an excellent guide for starters or experienced professionals.

I like the book format except for its size and fonts. For this type of book I'd prefer a "letter" size with bigger fonts.
For each important matter there are side bars inserted with checklists, which I think are great.

As the author states, this book is a reference guide and should be considered supplementary reading because not all the basics are covered.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2005-09-08

This book was the best reference I had while preparing for the NBAA Certified Aviation Manager's exam in 2004.

It is also a very useful read for the business executive who must deal with an aviation department but has little experience in that particular field.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2005-09-03

I had recently moved into the position of Aviation Manager/Chief Pilot of a mid-size, midwestern corporate flight department when I purchased this book. I was looking for a one stop shop to cover the basics of corporate aviation and a resource for studying for the NBAA's Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) Exam.
Though I had a solid foundation as a corporate pilot for 15 years, I was very impressed at the content of this book. This book covered very well the administration and operations side of a flight department as well as the technical and facilities side. Also included were great chapters on personnel and leadership components of managing a flight department. Though I did study other sources as well, I credit Business and Corporate Aviation and Management by John J. Sheehan as the primary reason I passed the CAM exam on the first try.
This book brings many resources together. As I went through this book, I developed a checklist of things I needed to get working on in my department.
Business and Corporate Aviation and Management was surprisingly easy and enjoyable reading, though a little larger print would have been appreciated.
All in all, this is an outstanding resource for anyone in corporate or business aviation including charter. And if you aspire to manage a flight department or take the CAM Exam, it's a must read and a must keep on your shelf.

1 out of 5 stars Selling It Now.......2005-06-11

I am in management for a major airline, among the most profitable in the world and consistently rated the best. Opened this book, browsed through and decided to sell it. It certainly covers a lot of ground in terms of opening your eyes to managing in aviation, but alas, only for non-aviation experienced personnel. There is mostly only mentions of what is there to run but nothing on how to run something. A long list of LISTS practically on what you need to run and then nothing that puts them together. Readability is not too pretty either. Dry style and lack of visuals will surely make this look like your college engineering textbooks, the ones you dreaded reading.

    Book Description

Stackpole is proud to introduce the Frontier Classics, a new series that aims to resurrect long out-of-print gems of frontier history. Antiquarian and rare book dealers have previously been the only source for these books, providing first editions for premium prices. Now, these books are available in affordable, quality paperback editions, with new historical introductions written by a leading expert in the field. Ellen McGowan Biddle was the wife of James Biddle, a U.S. Army officer who saw wide service on the frontier. "Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife" is a collection of her articulate, astute observations about life in the Army. From Macon, Georgia, to Fort Robinson, Nebraska, Ellen McGowan Biddle followed her husband throughout his career. Throughout her "reminiscences" she relates not only the day-to-day events of her life as an Army wife, but also the excitement, uncertainty, and sacrifice of life on the frontier.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Travels & Travails.......2007-08-15

Rather routine. Beginning with Reconstruction duty in Macon and Natchez, Biddle traces her experiences as she follows her military husband to the various posts he was assigned to: Brenham, TX; Benica Barracks, CA; the Lava Beds of N. CA (during action against the Modocs ); Ft. Lyon, CO; various spots in AZ; Ft. Myers, VA; and finally Ft. Robinson, NE. What Ms. Biddle observes and notes are fairly common things: the hard travel from place to place, the lack of scenery in the West, social events at the forts, her illnesses, etc. Some of her stories are mildly humorous, but basically she's a straight-laced teller of events.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging and personal memoir.......2002-12-08

Written by Ellen McGowan Biddle, the wife of U.S. Army officer James Biddle who served on the American frontier during the late 1800's, Reminiscences Of A Soldier's Wife is an engaging and personal memoir which describes the humble day to day events and the tension of life on the American western frontier. A powerful and captivating primary source Reminisces of A Solider's Wife offers the reader a kind of historical snapshot of just what it was like to live in the frontier military encampments and forts from Macon, Georgia, to Fort Robinson, Nebraska near the turn of the century. Enhanced for the modern reader with a new introduction by Peter Cozzens, Reminiscences Of A Soldier's Wife is part of the outstanding Stackpole Books "Frontier Classics" series and a highly recommended addition to personal reading lists, as well as academic, and community library American History reference collections.

2 out of 5 stars Hilariously worshipful & unobjective in every sense.......2004-04-06

If any historical researcher needed an example of a primary source that is manifestly unreliable, then he/she could cite this memoir, which cannot be trusted in any sense.

If the reader is not familiar with the career of "Black Jack" Logan, one would quickly assume from Mrs. General Logan's gushy, worshipful prose that General Logan was due to be canonized any time now.

Mrs. General Logan conveniently glosses over most of Logan's career as a political boss, which had more than a few squalid moments. She would also have the reader believe that her husband's military career was more distinguished than in fact it was. While Logan was one of the better "political generals" in the Union Army (not a rank incompetent such as Banks or Butler), he was nonetheless removed from command by Sherman's request because he was believed to be prioritizing politics over military affairs.

If the reader picks this book up believing it contains a gripping account of the tough life in the field --- well, at times it does, but it also contains in equal parts accounts of being received at the Imperial German court, and rubbing elbows with all the famous people that General Logan knew over the years. Mrs. General Logan clearly enjoys life as the wife of a Very Important Person, and enjoys recounting details of moving in selected circles.

All of this riveting information is presented in typically gaudy 19th-century prose, which is made even more hilarious by Mrs. General Logan's starry-eyed regard for her saintly, model of perfection husband. The book can get pretty funny at time, because it is simply so over-the-top, but as a historical resource, it should be considered almost worthless.

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting reading........1998-03-31

Mrs. Logan, (the wife of General John A. Logan of Illinois, one of the most notable "political generals" of the Civil War), was well placed to observe and report on the events of her time.
Residing in Washington for more than fifty years, she apparently was acquainted with everyone of importance, and has used her considerable powers of observation and description to produce this highly readable, useful and entertaining chronicle of the public affairs and personages of nineteenth-century America.
In conjunction with Mrs, Logan's autobiography the reader may wish to consult "Black Jack", James Pickett Jones' excellent biography of General Logan also published by Southern Illinois University Press.

Although there's some truth to the popular conception of the former Soviet Union's embrace of free-market capitalism as chaotic and corrupt, it must also be admitted that the reformists have done quite a remarkable thing, with nearly three-quarters of Russia's economic production now based in private enterprise. Rose Brady, who used to report from Moscow for Business Week, goes over the transformation step by step, focusing on the financial planners who made it happen and the corporate magnates who--in some cases through government-approved insider trading--benefited from the process.

        Book Description

Rose Brady, Moscow bureau chief for Business Week magazine, here provides a compelling first-hand account of Russia's transition from a socialist state to a market economy. Taking us into the factories, stores, banks, markets, homes, schools, and corridors of power in Russia, she explains how the country's own brand of capitalism has evolved.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of changes in Russia in 1990s.......2006-03-02

This book offers a very good summary of changes in Russia throughout 1990s. The text is easy enough for undergraduate students to read large portions of this book.

I teach a survey course on Russia to graduate-level business students. I have used a variety of texts on Russia's economic transformation, always seeking one with the ideal combination of currency, readability, and insights and perspectives attuned to the businessperson rather than the typical academic. Brady's book is it. Brady's experience with BusinessWeek and her illustrative interviews with Russian citizens resonate particularly strongly with my students, who run the gamut from straight-from-undergrad-school/can't-find-Russia-on-a-map, to individuals who have done business in Russia (successfully or un- ) and want to know more about a unique (and uniquely frustrating) environment for operations and investment. I plan to continue requiring this text for my students and hope Brady provides updated editions as needed.

        5 out of 5 stars In-depth analysis of Russia's economic transition.......2000-05-04

This is an fabulous book on how Russia turned from state socialism into a fragile, but market-based economy. Being a Business Week correspondent in Moscow the author could witness all stages of Russia's economic transformation -- starting from supply shortages and chaos of late 1991 to the formation of financial & industrial comglomerates in 1997. This book is an exciting reading because it is easy written and combines stories on both complicated economic issues and on lives of ordinary Russians, struggling to adapt to the changes.

This volume collects selected interviews covering Mr. Soderbergh's career from his first feature film through his Oscar win for "Traffic." Most of the interviews are brief, and the book an easy read; however, most readers will find it unsatisfying and even tedious. The main problem is the amount of repetition across interviews. I doubt that's the fault of either the editor or Mr. Soderbergh--probably the nature of the beast. The journalists tended to ask the same sorts of questions, and of course, Mr. Soderbergh has the same answer each time. To be sure, thought-provoking hints about the filmmaker's ideas, methods, and aesthetics occasionally surface, along with a few technical details, but there are no deep insights into the artist or his work. Still, fans of Mr. Soderbergh's work will find the collection informative enough to spend an hour or so with it. The general reader, though, would do better to pick up Mr. Soderbergh's own books--his published screenplay-with-journal for "sex, lies, and videotape" or his "Getting Away with It, Or: The Further Adventures of the Luckiest Bastard You Ever Saw," a series of conversations with filmmaker Richard Lester interwoven with more of Mr. Soderbergh's journals. Better yet, just watch the films.

            Book Description

Getting Away with It is a hilarious, insightful conversation between two visionary directors, Steven Soderbergh and Richard Lester, about the manifold joys and hardships of being a filmmaker. Though a generation apart, both share the infectious passion of cinephilia and have had a wide impact on the world film community. Soderbergh's freshman effort as a writer-director, sex, lies, and videotape, inaugurated a movement in low-budget, independent American film that remains a vital part of contemporary cinema today. Lester's freewheeling films of the sixties and seventies (including the Beatles' movies Help! and A Hard Day's Night; The Knack; How I Won the War and Petulia) helped to create a "new wave" of British film-making. Together they discuss their respective adventures in motion pictures in a free-ranging and sardonically educational dialogue.

Interwoven with this dialogue is a similarly witty and insightful journal by Soderbergh, recounting an extraordinary twelve months in which he rejected the Hollywood system and ventured into "guerilla film-making" with the offbeat projects Schizopolis and Gray's Anatomy, before returning to the Hollywood fray with his acclaimed adaptation of Elmore Leonard's "Out of Sight", starring George Clooney.

Soderbergh (Sex, Lies and Videotape) interviews Lester (Hard Day's Night), interspersing the conversations with his own diary entries about writing (or more often, not writing) various film drafts and the multiple headache-related opportunities afforded by choosing to be part of the film industry. The self-deprecatory journal entries and the punitive footnotes are pretty funny - sort of a cross between Jonathan Ames (What's Not to Love?) and Simon Gray's various theatre diaries.

The interview sections take us through Lester's films one by one - not an immensely detailed, blow by blow account, but the impression of frankness and ease with the fellow film-maker suggests that you get the to essence of Lester's work: insights which might not have emerged from a more conventional, or reverential, Q and A.

Personally, I could have done without the "Where did life come from and what's it all for?" meanderings towards the end - surely The Running, Jumping and Standing Still Film says all that needs to be said on that particular subject? - but overall this is, as the "publisher's" note says at the beginning, "Literature that soothes and invigorates, while accidentally stimulating the body's own defenses" - well, it's as good a description as any.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and enlightening.......2001-07-16

Being a fan of his work/output over the past few years, Soderbergh's book of interview and journal entries appeared to be a must-buy. It proved to be quite interesting and very revealing. The Richard Lester interview pieces may drag in some parts (being unaware of Mr. Lester's own filmography, this may seem destined), yet the two directors do contemplate a variety of subjects outside of filmmaking (the purpose of man, religion, and many other topics). The journal entries are hilarious bits and pieces of the Writer's Deliema/Writer's Block. Soderbergh constantly engages and his bizarre sense of humor peppers the book (all of the footnotes, for instance).

All in all, fascinating read, and it even turned me on to the films of Lester (bought "The Knack" the day after reading it).

            Bravo, Steve.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting for film people and die-hard fans.......2001-02-13

The majority of this book is a series of interviews between Stephen Soderbergh and Richard Lester that will mainly be of interest to fans of Mr. Lester, filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers. The first two-thirds of the book is basically a film-by-film discussion of Mr. Lester's ouevre, which too often (for my tastes) lapses into shop talk (lighting setups, film stock, etc.) and "I love it when Michael Crawford..."-type observations. I found myself skimming whole sections looking for more interesting and accessible anecdotes and discussions.

The other major part of the book is Soderbergh's journal c.1996 -- from about the time he finished editing "Schizopolis" and "Gray's Anatomy" through the months of trying to get them released, ending with his agreement to direct "Out of Sight". These sections are livelier and more amusing but get repetitive (negotiations fall through time and again, law suits drag on, procrastination is a never-ending theme) and too cute/clever (the wry footnotes get old after... well, pretty much right away).

I don't mean to be so down on this book -- I did enjoy it quite a bit -- but my expectations were higher and I know a lot of people who are not as interested in the technical side of filmmaking will find much of this material tedious. I would recommend it (highly) for those with that inclination, and also for fans of Mr. Lester's films (i.e., those who have seen and enjoyed at least "A Hard Day's Night", "The Knack", "Petulia", and one or two others). All others should approach warily.

            4 out of 5 stars Lester interviews-okay, Soderbergh-hilarious procrastinator.......2001-01-02

Finally, a window into Steven Soderbergh, the eclectic director of Schizopolis and Kafka. But I guess most people will know him as (in big flashy capital letters) "THE DIRECTOR OF ERIN BROCKOVICH & OUT OF SIGHT" as he's being billed now. I find it funny that Soderbergh is now considered this "Hollywood" director when, upon reading this book (and viewing his entire filmography), you find him almost the antithesis of your typical "Hollywood" personality. He's moody, self involved (in a good way), and a hilarious procrastinator.

But that's just one half of the book. Intercut with Soderbergh's journal entries (which date from just after he finished 'Schizoplois' and 'Gray's Anatomy' to him helming 'Out of Sight)are a collection of interviews he has with Richard Lester, the groundbreaking director of "A Hard Days Night" and "The Knack" (which I just saw and absolutely loved). I have to confess I had not seen almost any of Richard Lester's work (not including the Superman movies of which I had no idea he was involved) and since all they talk about is Lester's films I found it uninteresting to read about movies I've never seen. I did though, through Soderbergh's praise, go and watch a number of Lester's movies and then went back and read the sections that discussed them.

But the real magic of this book, at least to me and to all the Soderbergh-ites out there, is Soderbergh. His journal entries are insightful, funny, and really honest. And his style is so casual it feels like reading over letters from an old friend. I absolutely flew through his journal entries and enjoyed ever one of them. The great thing, from a fan's perspective and people interested in the movie business, is the honest, tiresome, struggle he shows of just surviving in Hollywood and the toll it takes on him. And since 'Schizopolis' may be my favorite Soderbergh movie, his journal entries being written at the time of it's release is an extra treat. And if you're a fan of Richard Lester you'll like this book even more.

So I would absolutely recommend this book: it's funny, it's informational, it's inspiring, and it's refreshingly honest. Look forward to laughing a lot too; his musings on his own procrastination are comic gems.

            Book Description

"Probably the best book ever written about polygamy. Neither an apologia nor an exposé."—Salt Lake City Tribune

"I am the daughter of my father's fourth plural wife, twenty-eighth of forty-eight children—a middle kid, you might say."

So begins this astonishing and poignant memoir of life in the family of Utah fundamentalist leader and naturopathic physician Rulon C. Allred. Since polygamy was abolished by manifesto in 1890, this is a story of secrecy and lies, of poverty and imprisonment and government raids. When raids threatened, the families were forced to scatter from their pastoral compound in Salt Lake City to the deserts of Mexico or the wilds of Montana. To follow the Lord's plan as dictated by the Principle, the human cost was huge. Eventually murder in its cruelest form entered when members of a rival fundamentalist group assassinated the author's father.

Dorothy Solomon, monogamous herself, broke from the fundamentalist group because she yearned for equality and could not reconcile the laws of God (as practiced by polygamists) with the vastly different laws of the state. This poignant account chronicles her brave quest for personal identity. Originally published in hardcover under the title Predators, Prey, and Other Kinfolk.

            4 out of 5 stars A terrific read.......2007-09-05

I tore through this memoir in a couple of days. I could not put it down. This woman's account of her life as a fugitive and a "trouble maker" is incredible and heartwrenching. It's so much more interesting to me if I know someone actually went through this. I can't imagine ever living in the kind of poverty this family did, or having to share my father or see my mother's hidden tears when her husband went off with another wife (or 6) a few nights a week. Allred does a pretty thorough job going through the genealogy and geographic movements of her family and it only serves to bring the tale even more to life. I'm sure I could go read newspaper articles about all she mentioned, and read the very journal Byron wrote in his travels. It's great to be able to trace everything all over the US and watch the world change around the family and the church and yet nothing ever really changes for them. I very much recommend this book to anyone looking to find out more about this controversial issue. See it from the eyes of a young girl lost in a sea of many.

5 out of 5 stars Daughter of the Saints.......2007-08-24

Daughter of the Saints is a long-time labor over a difficult subject and with many risks. Much of the intrique in the book is the unconscious recognition by the reader that this author is unusual in the sense that she'd even consider wrting about such a bizare upbringing. Anyone who has even considered expressing non-consenting views of one's own family and especially their religion---no matter how strange---must have a strong constitution, sense of conscience and determination. It takes great skill, sensitivity and fairness to pull off such an undertaking---and still there were tough repercussions from family and true believers. Though it was not the intent nor was it possible to give an in-depth evaluation or critique of of this unique American life style, the book goes a long way toward educating and bringing to awareness the wide-spread existence and practices of such Mormon beliefs, their many splinters and their considerable good-bad (?)influences in the lives of so many.

If you want to know what it's really like growing up in polygamy and living "the principle", forget Big Love and Jon Krakauer. Go to the source. Dorothy Solomon is the "middle child" in a family of 48 brothers and sisters. She is the daughter of murdered polygamist leader Rulon Allred. She knows what she is talking about. And she is an award-winning writer. If language matters to you, read this book. It was originally published in hardcover by Norton, for heaven's sake; it's hard to get published by Norton.

5 out of 5 stars An Honest, Inside Look at Polygamy.......2007-04-29

I was moved by Solomon's courage in speaking so honestly about her upbringing in a polygamist world. In this articulate, reflective, and often poetic memoir, she captures the beauty and suffering which come from living a hidden life among an abundance of family--where she is both comforted and lost. Being an intelligent, strong-willed child, she ultimately cannot accept a lifestyle where women aren't allowed to question their predicament and are expected to dedicate their lives to God by sharing a husband and birthing numerous children. In this courageous memoir, Solomon tells stories of her upbringing, speaking with love and empathy for her family yet refusing to paint a false picture of what it means to be a child of polygamy. Her intention, clearly, is to tell the truth.
