NUCLEAR POWERED NOBILITY.......2006-04-19
My first Bolo story was "Rogue Bolo", which I read over 20yrs ago, and which got me
hooked on Mr Laumer's admirable and self-aware Continental Siege Units. Hidden meanings,
allegory and relentlessly stellar prose may be sparse, but well-rendered entertainment and
thought-provoking stories are common in the Bolo series. A noble, multi-PhD-level artificial
intelligence that is not a two-arms, two-legs "classical-style" robot is a suprisingly engaging
idea. These beings have 4 sets of treads,2 megaton per second firepower,and armor
that can survive a nuclear explosion 50yds away. Anyone who has an issue with "military scifi"
has an issue with scifi in general. As long as humans are human, there will always be those
who will stop at nothing to impose their ideas on everyone else by force, whether its a street
thug or an Evil Interstellar Empire. Warp drive and colonization of other star systems is just
going to export the same old crap out into a bigger playing field. The idea of the evil that
men do taking place on such a vastly magnified scale is a hideous contemplation that has given
any true scifi buff (military or otherwise) a shiver or two. The bad guys have the shortcuts and
hyperfocus of evil on their side - the rest of us have the Bolos!
Combination of 1976 Bolo & 1986 Rogue Bolo .......2006-01-03
This is a combination of previously released works. The 1976 Bolo was a collection of short stories of the computer-controlled tanks called Bolo. Rogue Bolo is a novel from 1986.

Combat Unit, written in 1960, was Laumer's first Bolo story. The Night of the Trolls is from 1968. The Last Command: 1971. A Relic of War: 1972. Field Test: Mar 1976. Don't let the 1990 date of Compleat Bolo fool you, these stories have been out for a while. However, that is not to say they are not worth reading if you haven't read them, They are considered classics and are the originals by Laumer. This is just to let those that follow the Bolo series that they may have already read some or all of these stories.
If you don't already know, the Bolo stories are of computer-controlled, extremely armored and weaponed tanks (think of the tanks in beginning of the movie `The Terminator') that typically act with a strong sense of integrity and honor. In a sense it is like mechanized human engineering since these tanks are programmed with these qualities, but nevertheless the Bolo's are at times, if not always, to be admired for their actions. To be fair to us human beings, it's easier to be a bad-ass when you're surrounded by several tons of steel and quite formidable fire power.
I suppose the Bolo series would fall under the category of Military science fiction, which is considered a contentious issue in the present day Speculative Fiction `cutting-edge' world. These stories are classics though and came out before I even heard the term Military SF, and are some of the originals of that entire subgenre. Not being familiar with Military SF, I cannot say how these stories compare to more modern works. To me, I found the stories just OK. The concept behind them was a lot more appealing than stories themselves. You can consider the stories to be a glorification of war as the speculative fiction writers would say or you can consider them to be the best representation of human emotions in extreme conditions.
A great introduction to the Bolos.......2004-05-17
Anyone wishing to become familiar with Keith Laumer's Bolos should start here. It collects many previously published and widely scattered stories into one handy volume, and the writing is terrific. The stories cover many different eras, from the mid-21st century to the far future. A great all-around collection of SF stories, and the perfect starting place for the universe of the Bolos.
NOTHING new, just reprints of old stories! Not worth it!.......2000-12-22
Very, Very disappointed. I have all of the Bolo books and love them, but this was nothing new, and that is what I expected. Some of the stories do not even fit in with the newer ones. If you want to read his oldest stuff, or are a first time reader, then this might be a good start. Paying a premium price is not worth it.

Scores of items include baby food, pork chops, instant coffee, potato chips, fresh and frozen vegetables--if Americans eat or drink it, you can probably find out how much they're spending on it in this book. There are six types of tables in the book: Average spending tables, which present average spending data for all households in a segment; i.e., all households with incomes of $30,000 to $39,999, not just for purchasers of an item. Indexed spending tables compare the spending of each household segment with that of the average U.S. household. Per capita spending tables show how much households spend on each food category after dividing average spending by the number of people in the household segment. Indexed per capita spending tables compare the spending of each household segment with the spending of the average household, after adjusting for household size. Total spending tables show the dollar size of the total household market and of each market segment. Market share tables are produced by converting the total spending data to percentages, which makes it easier to see which household segments account for more of the spending on a food item. There are also projections to 2000 of total spending and market shares by age.

Based on unpublished data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey, the report examines how much Americans spend on groceries by the demographics that count—age, income, high-income households, household type, region of residence, race and Hispanic origin, and education. To round out the spending picture, it also presents “who-are-the-best-customers” analyses of the data, showing the demographics of grocery shopping at a glance. The 80-plus food items examined in this report fall within the categories of cereals and bakery products; meats, poultry, fish, and eggs; dairy products; fruits and vegetables; sugar and other sweets; fats and oils; and a miscellaneous category that includes frozen prepared foods, canned and packaged soups, snacks, condiments and seasonings, and nonalcoholic beverages.

Interesting addition to legendary singer's biography..........2007-06-01
I found this book an interesting read, if not all too brief. It was quite a bit shorter than I had imagined. Still, it was a very interesting read.
Also, the book is told in first and second hand accounts of the people making the claims in this book. I would have liked to have seen some sort of DNA proof of the claims made in this book, and this could have been done without exhuming the late singer's body. Patsy's children and the woman claiming to be her half-sister could have submitted to DNA tests, and this would have proved, without any doubt, that the claims made in this book are true.
I would take this book at face value, and it is a MUST for any true Patsy Cline fan.
Very believable truth about Patsy Cline.......2006-07-05
I really enjoyed reading this very informative and enlightening book regarding some truths about Patsy Cline's family. It is very believable and written completely from the heart of Linda Sowers whom I feel was very courageous to write a book that could easily come under criticism. I live an hour south of Winchester, Va. where Patsy Cline grew up but I also live only 6 miles from Elkton, Virginia where her "legal" father hailed from. Folks in the Elkton area with the last name of Hensley or Shifflett will be very disappointed when they learn they can no longer lay claim to being related to Patsy Cline. Should they ever learn of this book's existence I doubt they will believe the contents. Would like to hear what Patsy's ex Gerald Cline has to say. Surely she told SOMEBODY!!!! There is a lot of information in this small book. Many pictures.
It was indeed time for Patsy and Charlotte to be together for all the world to acknowledge.
Whispers were just a part of the era they were raised in. It's great to get the truth out in the open.
Rest easy Patsy and Charlotte.
My thanks to the author {Mrs.Sowers} for helping Charlotte bring her story to light. This was done with compassionate care. One could tell she knew and loved them both.
May we see more of her writing .Excellent for this first time author.
