5 out of 5 stars A Thorough and Artistic Teatment.......2002-10-08

Abraham Lincoln comes to life through the words of his devoted and talented biographer, Carl Sandburg. This edition is an excellent compromise between Sandburg's six-volume edition and the shorter, incomplete texts that abound regarding Lincoln. Take your time with this masterpiece and follow Lincoln from youth through the climax of his political career in Washington.

5 out of 5 stars definitive Lincoln by one of America's best.......2002-08-24

Thousands upon thousands of Civil War books are available, as American readers seem to have a limitless appetite for that era. If you are looking for the best, read Sandburg on Lincoln. A major American poet takes on one of the best-known, best-loved, most tragic of American historical figures.

When I was a freshman in high school, our English teacher offered us a deal: Anyone who read Sandburg's biography (then in six rather daunting volumes) would not have to attend class for a semester. I took him up on that offer, and was blessed to find my way through Sandburg's gift to the American people. Here is the highly detailed, thoroughly researched, and articulately written story of Abe Lincoln's years among us.

If you have time to read only one of the Civil War books from that burgeoning genre, read this one. You will come to know, from the inside out, this prairie boy who became a towering figure in American history.

      5 out of 5 stars A Pulitzer Prize winner's master work........1999-10-28

I believe Sandburg is the only author to win the Pulitzer for both poetry and history. Originally a multi volume history taking decades to complete, this single volume work is an appetizer. I read it in the 1960's and went on with relish to the full multi volume work.

This single volume is insightful, laser like in it's detail yet painting the times of Lincoln in a broad and beautiful brush. Did you know that in 1860 tools could be honed to within one ten thousandth of an inch of accuracy? That magazines and newspapers said the world would change for-ever because of the new "instant" communication nation wide?

This is more than biography. It is a woven fabric depicting the times and life of Abraham Lincoln.

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic on a Classic American.......1999-03-16

I collect old and rare books. My mother bought me a copy of Sandburg's one-volume edition published in 1954. Honestly, it was slow to start, but once it got to the 1850's, I couldn't put it down. Lincoln's deeds are so often trivialized in our history books. But Sandburg meticulously builds up the background in a way that forces his reader to appreciate the magnitude of the moment, and the importance of each decision--whether right or wrong--that President Lincoln made. It easily took three full weeks to read, but it was more than worth it. I closed the book thinking, "I can't believe it's over!" My advice: Read this book right away, and make someone else read it too. You'll need someone to talk to when you're through!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of facts to chew on and not a book to be taken lightly........1999-03-12

This biography of lincoln is an unbiased look into the man's life. You'll find everything you would expect and much, much, more. This is not a book for the weak hearted reader. Many of the sections seem to be endless. This is not however a negative, the opposite is true. Sandburg's quest for a truly indepth redering of the Lincoln story creates these long spells and the pay off is just. Much of the humor in the book is dated and therefore will be lost on many readers. Once again, an outstanding book that gets an easy 5 stars.

                          Book Description

Handmade Lives is a cultural cross-section of a time and place still evolving: the legacy of the love generation.

Inside the handmade houses, of Canyon California 1967-74, the flower children fully flowered and grew their own rebellious and poetic children, who turned away from the unrestrained experiments of their parents, yet took their understanding from them.

Handmade Lives is a collection of 44 intimate narratives, which detail the life of a small California hill town, that burned and rebuilt, that fought the water company and won, and in the process made worldwide news in the late 1960s.

This classic history of Walt Disney's life and works asks penetrating questions about Disney's achievements and shortcomings, and the enormous popularity of the Disney version. One of the best studies ever done on American popular culture...unfailingly, consistently intelligent, and eminently readable. --Stephen J. Whitfield, Brandeis University. This may be the single most illuminating work on America and the movies. --Robert W. Butler, Kansas City Star

I recently read both this and Neal Gabler's "Walt Disney, Triumph of the American Imagination," and Gabler's book (recently released) is an extroardinarily well-written (and detailed) attempt to give a balanced version of Uncle Walt. This book, unfortunately, has a point of view that is unwilling to take note of contrary evidence (although there is an interesting story here about the Disneyfication of American Culture, this book is simply too one sided.

Taking into account the fact that this book is almost 40 years old, I found it extremely hard to follow. The author makes many pop-culture references pertinent to the time that I cannot relate to (as if he expects the reader to be a Hollywood-insider/contemporary of Disney's). The book skips around to different time periods and is very dry. This is NOT a biography, as I thought, more of a commentary on Disney's impact on American culture and entertainment, as it quickly summarizes Disney's formative experiences as if the reader is expected to be familiar with them.

Schickel does a good research and puts facts down as they are, but he analyzes those facts from his own point of view. He thinks Disney works have manipulated masses who were of an inferior intellect and the company made fortune out of it.
While this may be true, the book could have been more balanced, with an unbiased view, mentioning many favorable things the Company created.

The book is definitly an in depth coverage of what happened in the early years of the Disney company, but it's definitly more of a history of the company than a biography of Walt.

More of a social history of cartoons and the movies and the common man, than that of an unbiased look at Walt Disney.
I felt that the author believed himself above us common Midwest, small town folks, and felt pity on us that we didn't know that we were stupid and liked such low brow things like Mary Poppins, Snow White and Silly Symphonies. I think he equates pop culture with trash. I guess the millions and millions of people around the world that just want decent entertainment, and not some hidden meaning that needs interpretation, are fools. Or is he just jealous?

The Road Runner is an autobiographical novel detailing the traumatic life, various loves, habitual tragedies, ultimate triumphs and chaotic times of John Stover. The story is loosely based on Homer's Odyssey; entailing the search described by Homer almost 2,700 years ago. The themes are similar; the quest for identity, the search for love, the value of family and the continual challenge of being true to one's values and ideals. Many of the temptations encountered by Odysseus are placed before the title character. He meets the one-eyed Cyclops, is tempted by Circe and Calypso and walks among the lotus eaters. The story begins with painfully descriptive details of the author's harsh home life. Mr. Stover, the fourth of seven children, describes the family dynamics and how they play out as dysfunction slowly and completely manifests itself in its various forms in all the children. His father, a self-made man is also an alcoholic, sexual compulsive and rage-a-holic. The author, through his revelations, points out sexual dysfunction as a Stover family legacy, passed from generation to generation. Tracing the family genealogy back to the infamous triangle of John Alden and Priscilla-the very woman who snubbed Governor Miles Standish's amorous advances, the author recounts what may well be the beginnings of the Stover family's sexual dysfunction. Tales of other, closer relatives running afoul of the law as a result of their sexual compulsions are also chronicled in great detail. The author introduces us to his brother whom he calls Thor the God of Thunder and Gloom. The brother, six years older, tortures, beats and molests the young author. Mr. Stover spent his youth working at his father's hotel; The West Elm Hotel in Brockton, Massachusetts where he observed men from the Brockton Veteran's Administration Hospital. As a youth Mr. Stover found several of the tennants who had succumbed to an accidental death, suicide and even m

The book contains two chapters of specific writing for the genre writer. The rest of the book consists of general information that could be applied to any form of writing. The passages on how to deal with taxes, business and publishing markets are especially good. I would recommend the 2006 Novel and Short Story Writer's Market instead. It has much more relevant information for the aspiring author/writer.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Practical, and Fun to Read!.......2004-03-25

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Science Fiction & Fantasy" provides practical, solid advice, and it does it with the help of some very funny stories. It's at once sobering and hopeful; it doesn't get you worked up with a lot of false hopes, yet doesn't leave you depressed and suicidal about your chances of getting published either.

This book debunks popular myths and legends about writing. It covers the varieties of science fiction, as well as fantasy, including "dark fantasy" or horror. It briefly touches on fans and conventions, including how to handle your fans (the good and the bad). It discusses the importance (or not) of having "new" ideas for your stories, and of knowing your subject. It'll also point out some of the mistakes and problems that knowing your subject can push you into.

It goes into writing as a job. It covers the usual "you have to make time for it" idea that every book trots out, but it also provides useful suggestions for how to go about this. It goes over the good and bad methods SF authors use to convey information in their stories. Instead of simply trotting out the old "show don't tell" advice, it provides practical structuring suggestions, as well as examples of those suggestions. It also goes into such genre topics as world-building.

One of the invaluable aspects of this part of the book is the insider's perspective. These authors haven't just summed up their own experiences submitting things--they've talked to lots of editors and networked with everyone. They tell you what editors like, don't like, and dread.

This book gives practical advice on self-promotion, without pushing you to use the sleazy, shady, or just plain rude self-promotion practices I've seen advocated in many articles. You'll find all sorts of tips in here on readings and signings, conventions, cards and fliers, press releases, interviews, reviews, and book launches. The book even covers web sites, newsgroups and netiquette, mailing lists and awards. There's also a section on agents, electronic rights and publishing, contracts, taxes, and writers' associations.

This is an immensely practical book for genre authors, and well worth reading several times over. It includes information on everything from idea generation through publication and promotion, in as much detail as possible!

Ok, so I'm a bit of a fanatic when it comes to "How to Write" books. I buy pretty much all of them that I run across. Some good, some not so good.

This one is definitely one to get! I find that the "Complete Idiot" guides are usually written in an easy to read and entertaining format, and this one certainly didn't disappoint me.

Written from two authors in the field that, admittedly, I've never heard of, but it wasn't a disappointment in the slightest. They draw from several different viewpoints, research their facts, and even poke fun at themselves through it all.

Nor does this book a bit of fluff to encourage you on. They lay out the hard facts (not everyone can make a living at writing, sometimes your books don't sell, sometimes you get rejected after 8 years of waiting, etc) without sugarcoating them, and I really appreciate a book that doesn't talk down to me.

If you are looking for a book that will tell you how to go from Chapter 1 to the Epilogue and hold your hand the whole way, well, keep on looking. This book does not particularly focus on HOW to write, but basically what the Sci-Fi/Fantasy world of writers is like. Hence the title is "Publishing" not "Writing" Science Fiction.

Fantasy authors, don't be scared away by just Sci-Fi being listed on the cover. This is for anyone that's contemplating writing speculative fiction.

This book is going to stay in my "keepers" pile! Close at hand!

5 out of 5 stars I followed their advice and got published!.......2002-08-12

My original review is below, but I have things to add. Two books made all the difference for me. Now I have an agent, and he has sold my military sci-fi adventures to Ace Book. The books that made the difference for me were "On Writing," by Stephen King, and "Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Science Fiction."

King furnished the best advice for writing... the best advice I have gotten anywhere, in his tidy little book. My professors at school were patient and gifted mentors and I was lucky to have such generous men assisting me as I started out; but they were about literature, my desire to publish potboilers confused them and placed them in unfamiliar territory.

Doctrow and Schroeder provided current (for the time) and shrewd advice for how to work in the sci-fi market. I followed their advice carefully, including going to the agents they suggested. In the end, I got one of the agents they mentioned, and my agent got me a deal with a good publisher.

The following is what I had to say about "The Complete Idiot's Guide" two years ago, as I was still writing my book. I hope it is of value.

I almost returned this book when it first arrived in the mail. I took a look at the back and saw that Cory Doctrow had published all of 15 short stories--no novels, no books, no anthologies... He publishes 15 short stories and off he goes to write a book about getting published.

I did not return the book. Instead, I scanned the pages and found that the chapter headings seemed quite sensible, even practical. So I gave the book a try.

Doctrow and Schroeder may not have all of publishing credentials of an Asimov or a Card, but they have a lot of solid practical advise to offer any fledgling writer. They have put a lot of work into creating a solid, readable guide with good information about the benefits of agents, methods of editing, places to publish, definitions of genres, and the state of Science Fiction as a whole.

I almost judged this book by its cover and it would have been a terrible mistake. Having read this reference cover-to-cover, I believe it is invaluable for the BEGINNER, the new writer or the writer who is new to SF and Fantasy.

                                                Book Description

More than an autobiography, "Partners" is also a chronicle of adventures that span the better part of the twentieth century. It is the intriguing personal memoir of Amnon Barness, a successful entrepreneur, businessman, humanitarian and phil anthropist.

Born in Palestine before the formation of the State of Israel, educated in an Egypt that was dangerous for a young Jew, he came to America with a few dollars in his pocket and earned a master's degree in Journalism from Syracuse University. He started h is career as a fundraiser for Israel in its infancy, and became a leading organizer of the Israel Bond program in the United States. He graduated to the business world as a co-founder of a number of businesses (several of which were the talk of Wall Stre et) that grew to employ thousands of people.

In "Partners", we get to know Amnon Barness as a creative man who has traveled the world, learned to speak nine languages, and had the good fortune to make effective partnerships with some extraordinary people. We learn of his love of family, his loyalty to his friends, his dedication to Israel, his commitment to education, and his ability to get others to contribute to those who need the extra help. We see how commercial success and humanitarian accomplishments go hand in hand. The State of Israel, the Catholic Church, and various colleges, universities, research centers and governments have honored him for his philanthropy.

None of us travel our life's journey alone, and in "Partners", Mr. Barness honors the people who have guided and enriched his life. It is not only the singular and solitary great man or woman who makes history, but also the collaborative efforts of the ma ny truly good individuals that create our greatest achievements. Self-effacing and candid, Amnon Barness shows that he is both a leader and a collaborator, and his memoir vividly tells his captivating story.

2 out of 5 stars The History of a Great Man and an Era.......2007-03-16

Mr. Barness' book is an amazing biography of his remarkable experiences which overlays a history of Israel and the Jewish people as a whole. His personal ability to persevere subtly parallels Israel's -- hence the subtitle "The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man." He teaches the reader the important difference between admiration and jealousy. The book leaves the reader enthused and encouraged. It should be compulsary reading for all high school students. As far as his human qualities are concerned, after having had personal contact with the author, I only can confirm that he manages to encarn entrepreneurial spirit, humanism, affection for his fellow people and yet still being a ordinary man. I especially appreciate the chapters about Spain. The stories he's telling are a mirror of his polifacetic and interesting personality.

4 out of 5 stars Confederate Spy in Florida, Rebel.......2006-07-18

In the swamps of South Florida, Panther captured the Moccasin, a slivery Rebel spy. Florida was a slave state in 1862 and most of the planters depended on slave labor. They felt that the Confederacy had the God-given right to independence, just as the thirteen Colonies had managed to win and prove their right to rebel against England. Now, the Rebs were the patriots just as their forefathers in New England, USA, were.

A battle of wills between the Union major McKenzie and the Confederate spy, Lanie McMann. He'd been ordered to capture the South's most notorious spy, not knowing he'd find a beautiful young woman dressed in men's clothes. By law, she would have been hanged; for Lanie, however, her captor became her lover, even married her before becoming her bitter enemy. The Civil War, as I once explained it to a native of Belize, was brother against brother in the South, and was not about slavery per se. It was Lincoln's assassination by Rebel sympathizers which brought the issue of slavery into the possible reasons for such a horrific internal war.

She proved to be the most exasperating human being he'd ever come in contact with: willing to fight when all hope of any purpose or victory was gone, and never ever willing to accept defeat in any way, shape, or form. Just as I was taunted by a mean person saying "You're wrong," "Wrong again" because he claimed to be a 'professional. I have news for him, a pro does not have to always prove he's right. With the captured spy and her manly Union captor, some dialogue: "You have been beaten" and "You are beaten, and the point here is t hat you must learn that you can be beated." "You should be horsewhipped," she declared -- and she was right. No man tells a Southern woman that she is inferior in any way. We fight for our rights. Some years ago, I told a local historian had I loved back them, I might have been hanged as a Confederate spy (Knox. was Union) and he agreed. In one of his recent history lessons, he describes the defeated Jeff Davis as a man of 63 with receding hair and a wispy goatee who visited this town in 1871 who was on his way via rail to Memphis. Davis described Grant's administration as wicked and the writer had him and one of his generals, Forrest, as leaders of the klan which was started by a group of Pulaski lawyers and judges. It was not a part of the Confederacy at all, formed to protect Southerners from the Northern Carpetbaggers during reconstruction. We still need their protection, as a director of the Carpetbagger Theater hoodwinked $100,000 out of the City Council on false pretenses. We also need their protection from corrupt 'professionals.' "Her grief was real; the only way to find life again was to live," in any type of warfare. Other titles in this series about Florida's involvement in the Civil War include 'Captive' and 'Surrender.'

Decades after his death, Sam Cooke's thrilling, seductive tenor remains one of the glories of American popular music. His compositions have inspired a multitude of covers, few of which manage to lay a finger on the original versions. And Cooke's vocal mannerisms--the melismatic swooping and yodeling he applied to key phrases--are still audible every time Aaron Neville opens his mouth (not to mention a host of other singers, from Rod Stewart to Aretha Franklin). Clearly, then, it was time for a full-dress biography, and Daniel Wolff has done a superlative job. He traces the singer's transformation from gospel prodigy, who hit the road with the Soul Stirrers at the tender age of 19, to secular star. Endlessly ambitious, Cooke never quite figured out how to juggle his sacred and profane instincts, and Wolff is particularly good on this balancing act, as well as on the racial politics of the music industry.

                                                Book Description

In 1957, already one of the biggest stars in gospel music, Sam Cooke burst onto the pop scene with the number one hit "You Send Me," the first in a string of rock & roll classics. He quickly became one of music business's first African-American entrepreneurs, as well as a role model in the early years of the civil rights struggle. Then, at age thirty-three, he was found dead, shot through the heart in a seedy motel in south Los Angeles. The circumstances surrounding his death would remain a controversial mystery for years to come.

I have referred this book to others so many times over the years since it's release, but I never wrote a review, until now....

I have read this book 5 times. Each time, I still get engrossed by the amazing life of Sam Cooke. If you really want to know this man's story - get this book. Get this book along with Erik Greene's "Our Uncle Sam". These two books will be ALL you need. Trust me - I have read them all. Wolff's book takes you from Sam's beginnings with the the Highway QC's...all the way up to the tragedy of Sam's untimely death. Sam's great nephew - Erik Greene, takes you through the aftermath and beyond with "Our Uncle Sam". One thing that I love about both books is that they completely decimate the "official" version of Sam Cooke's death.

I could say more - but it has already been said....everybody cant be wrong. Get the book - you won't be disappointed.

For a long time this was the only available biography on Sam Cooke. Until Peter Guralnick released his excellent 'Dream Boogie' a few years ago.

When I first read 'You Send Me' it openened my eyes to a lot of things; unlike many of his contemperaries, here was someone in complete control of everything he did. Writing his own songs, pretty much producing them himself and above all one of the first black men to own and run his own record-label (SAR).

Of course it starts during his gospel days in which, not known by everyone, for a few years as a member of the Soul Stirrers he was the number 1 soul star around. Maybe not in religious fervor, but certainly with the female part of the church. Later his way with women would haunt him, even leading to his unfortunate death at age 33.

The book is well researched, provides nice insights into the songs and into his mind as well. His constant veering between wanting to play music for white and black, but always staying himself.

This is a great introduction to the man who 'created soul' and a must for every soul lover.

You Send Me: The Life and Times of Sam Cooke is a very good rendering of the life of the classic gospel/R&B/pop superstar whose life was tragically cut short with his death in 1964.

Here you get to see the talented, complex, and at times, troubled singer throught his beginnings singing with the Soul Stirrers, through his skillful crafting of his own solo career, and ending with the ongoing mystery surrounding his death in a flophouse motel at the hands of a woman who may have had other motives for killing Cooke besides self-defense.

The only problem with You Send Me is that it at times focuses too much on the minutiae of the gospel circuit that Cooke and the Soul Stirrers traveled and details of the publishing industry that many readers will not find interesting. But in the end, this book is well worth a read, and anyone interested in Sam Cooke should not be disappointed.

This was a well researched and written book. I enjoyed it because it was packed full of history on music industry, the Civil Rights Era and The Man (Sam Cooke). This book sent me there. It was so descriptive, that I felt like I was actually there viewing the events as they unfolded.

I am a Sam Cooke fan, but I did not know much about him. This book provided me with an in-depth look at the man from a personal and professional standpoint. His life was not picture perfect and his death is still surrounded by too much mystery. I appreciate the author revealing such sensitive info and in such a way that it did not tarnish my image of the singer.

This man's life had all the makings for a movie. The book left me not wanting for anything. I walked away full...no questions pending.

                                                Book Description

Pictures of Home is based on photographs that were stored on a shelf in the bedroom closet where Douglas Bukowski grew up. The pictures and the history behind them are brought to life in stunning fashion in Mr. Bukowski's spare prose. Pictures of Home is the story of a family and a city, told affectionately and endearingly by one who is part of both.

This is a tender narrative that provides uncommon insight into family life on Chicago's South Side during the second half of the twentieth century.

The author uses a multi-generational trove of his family's photographs--pre-digital age and not all that well reproduced for publication--to kindle his memory. (As the book enters the home stretch, I thought Mr. Bukowski was losing sight of the photographs, to my disappointment).

The author, to his credit, also has done some basic research, primarily in documents such as property deeds and death certificates. In doing so he illuminates forgotten details of his family's history.

This is a book, on one level, about the dynamics and intricacies of family life from the author's birth to his father's death in 2000. The most powerful chapter is entitled "Dying." It should be read by every son and daughter who has lived through the inescapable process of a parent's final illness. Mr. Bukowski composes a narrative that is tender yet unvarnished (including intimate details that reveal his own humanity).

On another level this is a rare book, in the first person, about the day-to-day meaning of homelife. It is about landscapes, the built environment, urbanism, and neighborhoods. Readers attain unaccustomed insight into life within the Bukowski family, both in its joys and its sorrows.

"Pictures of Home" reminds me very much of "Colored People" by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in the plumbing of detailed autobiographical recollections achieved by the author as he narrated his own story.

This is more than another Chicago book. "Pictures of Home" is a narrative about humanity through the prism of the Bukowski family.
