Description:
In this paper, we adapt the concept of fundamental equilibrium exchange rates 'FEER' in a complete model approach. We use it to determine the likely paths of the Dollar and other key currencies. The FEER is the (real) exchange rate that is consistent with internal balance and sustainable external balances. Here we examine the composition of a Dollar adjustment and hence the extent to which a FEER (for the US) depends on factors or rigidities elsewhere in the world, as well as at home. We find, the US still needs to accept an adjustment in her real exchange rate if the increase in her foreign liabilities is to come to an end. However, counterpart adjustments also have to be made in Canada, Mexico, and some Asian economies if this policy is to be successful. We also show that productivity growth differentials may act as a substitute for depreciation, and this provides an explanation for the failure of the dollar to depreciate in the 1990s.

The literature on equilibrium exchange rates for the central and eastern European countries has mushroomed in recent years. In this paper, we discuss the econometric pitfalls involved in such estimations and endow the reader with the methodological ingredients to avoid such biases. We review the commonly used approaches and identify problems related to the most straightforward econometric procedures as they often do not take the transition process properly into account. As an alternative, we propose a two-stage ''out-of-sample'' strategy that consists of estimating the relationship between the exchange rates and fundamentals and the extrapolation of these relationships to transition economies.

A short discussion of some remarkable soldiers.......2005-07-04
This short summary of Sheridan's role in the last year of the Civil War is an interesting introduction to the lives of a remarkable group of largely-forgotten soldiers. Merritt, Mackenzie, Crook, Upton, and Wilson were young, gifted, and tough officers who contributed to Union victory. Custer is remembered today because he blundered at the Little Bighorn. The others are seldom discussed because they died in bed after distinguished military careers both during and after the Civil War. The author does a nice job of educating us about their backgrounds and contributions. Pleasantly written, one finishes the book wanting to know more about this Band of Brothers that Sheridan drew around him in the Shenandoah and at Appomattox.

Does not do justice to Greatness........1999-04-16
Unlike the fortunate reviewer from New Jersey, I spent a fortune on obtaining my copy of this book. I liked this book in that it filled in a lot of the blanks about her early life and career, as in Australia we really only got to know this wonderful woman when she burst forth onto our screens as the magnificent Beatrice in "Much Ado About Nothing." However, on the whole I must agree with the other reviewers. I could have paid $2.80 for the latest Woman's Day magazine and got the same amount of depth. If you can get it from the bargain bin do it! But don't be a chump like myself and pay $45 for it. I suggest all Lady Emma fans out there should band together and persuade the magnificent lady to feed our voracious appetites and pen her autobiography. Did anyone else sense a very strong anti-Ken vibe?
A True Emma Thompson Fan.......1999-02-16
I have read this book and fortunately I purchased it from my local Barnes & Noble store for only $4.95 (Hardback). I found it on the "dud" shelf where it belongs! This book is a compulation of magazine articles previously published about Emma. The author even writes his references in the back of the book. If you are a true Emma fan and crave information about her then you probably have already read from other sources the information that is in this book. We'll never know the true story until Emma writes her autobiography. In the meantime, the closest we'll get to an autobiography is the Sense and Sensibility diary that Emma wrote.

For those of you who don't live on the level of Emma-fandom that I do, a newsflash. This woman will record her life story when she is good and ready. This biography is merely a patchwork of what might be true and what probably isn't. What we are ment to know of Emma Thompson, we will know the truth of, and what we aren't to know are things no person needs to know of another. If you are an Emma fan, however, you'll appreciate the nice cover shot and picture section inside. Take these, put the whole of the text aside for bathroom reading, and wait about thirty years until the real story comes out.

This is worth buying for the emma thompson fan. It gives a very good account of her family background, her early childhood, her marriage to Kenneth Branagh, and her rise to stardom. I enjoyed reading it. Kari Guy

Ms. Clairmonte is a severely disturbed woman, who, when she found out she had been left out of the will of her step-father, destroyed the memory of a great man, making up horrible lies, and sued her own mother, leaving her mother broke and penniless. Shame on Ms. Clairmonte, how can she live her with herself?

I thought the book was great. I just wish they would have wrapped things up a little more at the end.

I am Ms. Meg Clairmonte's Ex Sister-in-law. I have heard for years about Meg's court case and book. My son, her nephew, just turned 18 and graduated from high school. I am a single mother and have struggled for years to support us and now we are trying to send him to Tech school in the fall.
The only reason I am telling you all that is to say this...
I just found out that Meg's step-father, Don had created a trust fund for my son. If the reason Meg sued for all that money was for "therapy" as her lawyer once told me, then why, pray tell, was it necessary to take the trust funds that were supposed to benefit my son and hers. (Yes, she took her own son's money, too. I guess she figured that he wouldn't need any money, either)? Did that additional sum of money make a big difference in her settlement? Well, I can tell you that it would have made a big difference in my son's life right now, when we are trying to scrape up the money for school.
I know you can tell that I am very hurt by this. My guess would be that the reason she did it was because I would not be sucked into the law suit and testify on her behalf. My experience with Meg before Don died and she started telling the world about her life with him was that she was manipulative and spiteful. So, there you are, she has proved me right. And this time it was at my son's expense and hers, too.
Just wish everyone who read the book and felt so sorry for Meg could read this, too. As I knew from the beginning, it was always about the money...
Best Book Ever.......2003-09-22
I've learned from personal experience that Meg is truely as strong and good hearted as she seems. I cringe at the thought of the horrible things she was forced to endure for so long and can only pray this book touches others as much as it has me. Meg's story inspires everyone to never give up or give in to the wicked people surrounding us. I thank the Lord everyday for the voice he has given her, and hope that others can find peace that have been through similar tragidies.

I met this wonderful person that this book was written about. She gave me this book when she learned that I too was abused. It is incredible how she has turned so much pain and suffering into something positive as she shows so clearly in the way she leads her life. I never thought in a million years there was so much abuse going on in our United States. It't time that abuse is stopped including verbal, mental,emotional and sexual. I pray that in opening the scarrs and barring her soul in her book that Megan will be continuely blessed and never forgotten. Your Friend, June
