Book Description
In 1958, Stanford University Press published Studies in the Mathematical Theory of Inventory and Production (edited by Kenneth J. Arrow, Samuel Karlin, and Herbert Scarf), which became the pioneering road map for the next forty years of research in this area. One of the outgrowths of this research was development of the field of supply-chain management, which deals with the ways organizations can achieve competitive advantage by coordinating the activities involved in creating products—including designing, procuring, transforming, moving, storing, selling, providing after-sales service, and recycling. Following in this tradition, Foundations of Stochastic Inventory Theory has a dual purpose, serving as an advanced textbook designed to prepare doctoral students to do research on the mathematical foundations of inventory theory and as a reference work for those already engaged in such research.
The author begins by presenting two basic inventory models: the economic order quantity model, which deals with “cycle stocks,” and the newsvendor model, which deals with “safety stocks.” He then describes foundational concepts, methods, and tools that prepare the reader to analyze inventory problems in which uncertainty plays a key role. Dynamic optimization is an important part of this preparation, which emphasizes insights gained from studying the role of uncertainty, rather than focusing on the derivation of numerical solutions and algorithms (with the exception of two chapters on computational issues in infinite-horizon models).
All fourteen chapters in the book, and four of the five appendixes, conclude with exercises that either solidify or extend the concepts introduced. Some of these exercises have served as Ph.D. qualifying examination questions in the Operations, Information, and Technology area of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Review of the Stochastic Inventory Theory.......2007-02-13
This book provides a good path to learn the theory of stochastic inventory control. The first few chapters and the appedices are pretty useful.
Stochastic Inventory Mathematical Formulations.......2007-01-12
This book is not suitable for practitioner looking for methodologies on how to solve real-world stochastic inventory problems. However, it is suitable for someone interest on mathematical formulations, research...etc.; perhaps a graduate IE/OR student working on inventory models.
A great overview of stocahstic inventory theory........2004-09-12
Begining from early day in 1950, the Inventory theory is mathematically rich and widely applicable field of Operations Research. This books provides an excellent overview of the development in this direction so far. It teaches many very important concept without getting tedious in technical details. This also serves as a very good text for students interested in learning dynamic programming and structured policies. This book falls short of (my) expectations as its approach in describing the problem solving is very legality oriented. In other words, though this informs a reader why certain things are true by presenting mathematical proofs, it doesn't tell how do one arrives at the proof. However there are very few books which really do that.

The men of the Confederacy.......2007-09-02
Most certainly, John L. Wakelyn's "Biographical Dictionary of the Confederacy" is the essential reference book on the Confederate establishment. Except for specific biographies, the general books tended to emphasize battles and campaigns and to leave personal date of Confederate leaders in the dark. According to historian Frank E. Vandiver, Wakelyn's book "is a remarkably useful historical tool - a biographical directory that is also and analytical dictionary of attitudes, occupations, and power structures."
No Civil War buff can do without "Biographical Dictionary of the Confederacy".

If your a history fanatic, you need this BOOK!.......2000-03-25
The book is a very descriptive text of life on the frontier in the Pacific Northwest. It outlines the true nature of the struggles between the indians of that region and the settlers that wanted to displace them. It was very unpopular for a West Point Academy graduate to come to the defense of the indian during that era but never the less Capt. Cram did so and his report was published. Many notes about the specific problems associated with travel through and around the more mountainous regions are outlined. The period of time that is covered in the book spans a good portion of the 1850's so...readers who enjoy reading about the people that shaped this country...get your copy now and you will be glad you did!

Book Description
As a history of family life in the squatter settlements of Rio de Janeiro from the 1940s to the 1960s, this study shatters the myth of household disorganization said to be the norm among the urban poor. Using quantitative evidence, field reports by social workers, newspaper accounts, and the recollections of the squatters themselves, the study dissects household structure, economic activity, living standards, and political participation among the one million favelados (squatters) living in Rio by 1960, singling out three favelas for comparative analysis. Favelados prized family life, and most succeeded in holding their households together against daunting odds. Shantytowns provided residence close to the workplace, and some were erected literally in the shadow of the construction projects where the squatters worked. Indeed, the location and economic activity of the surrounding neighborhood largely determined the ability of the favela to survive. As squatters became an important part of the city work force, they mobilized to put pressure on the authorities to provide collective services like water and electricity.

Book Description
Larry Gatlin was a brash and outspoken man who was dogged by the press and continually at odds with the music industry. He would disappear for days, bingeing on cocaine and alcohol. By the mid-1980's, the reckless lifestyle caught up with him. Returning to his faith, he found freedom, not only from drug and alcohol addiction, but also from the demons that drove him to determine his worth by the weight of his success. This is Larry Gatlin's inspiring story, told as only this ole boy from Texas can tell it, rich with reminiscences, humor, insight, and honesty.
Customer Reviews:
"God is in charge,not you.Be at peace,Larry.".......2005-03-02
This is a wonderful book about and by a person who really understands what life is all about.Maybe Larry would take exception with my saying that.Rather than thinking that he has all the answers,he has a deep faith in his God,and tries to live a good life and knows the rest is up to God.
He shows us that the life of a Superstar in the music business ,while being extremely arduous,it is one's decision to pursue it and has many rewards.Obviously, while money has to be a big part of it,it is the pursuit of your dreams ,joys and disappointments and the experiences and friendships that make it all worthwhile.
The great sacrifices and heavy load to keep things together, especially the life on the road and being away from family;can take its heavy toll.As we sit back and enjoy people like the Gatlins,we should keep in mind the effort they put forth to entertain and in many ways inspire us.
From this book we see a side of Larry's life that people outside the business can't really understand. When he talks about other stars ,Mickey Rooney for example,we see he is in great awe of him.Even more than that ,how impressed Larry was in finding that Mickey was so impressed with him.Larry may be a 'big star' but he carried that mantle with an even greater humility.
Maybe ,All the Gold is not in California,in a bank,in the middle of Beverly Hills;a lot is in the hearts and souls of people like Larry and others like him.
People of faith will understand what Larry is saying.Hopefully those without faith, might see what strength faith can be in good and difficult times.
A very good and inspiring book.
The Most Honest Writer-Larry Gatlin...........2003-01-01
Books rarely hold my attention. Can't tell you how many I've started and put down. I started Larry Gatlin's book a few days ago and can't stop reading. Half-way thru the book, his re-telling of successes and failures have me grabbing for a kleenex every few pages. His reliance on God and coming back to God's grace are touching/inspiring. He gives God the credit for every moment that counts in his life that will connect to another open door (try to count how many times he writes, "another God moment.") His writing style is energetic, to the point, down to earth, honest - just as his personality is on stage. (I saw the Gatlin Brothers in concert in Kansas City 12/28/02). This book makes the reader rejoice as we watch him overcome alcoholism and substance abuse. Who wouldn't want Larry to win over these addictions, for his sake and his family's sake back home. He doesn't overdo the details but gives the full picture in few words. Keep the music coming Gatlin Brothers!
This book should still be in the stores!.......2002-10-26
I'm a Larry Gatlin fan. His book is written as well as his songs. I was captivated by his life story which he described in such down to earth, honest words. And it is so funny.
What a talent!
A MUST READ, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A GATLIN FAN!.......2000-04-25
I've been around the music business for the past 30 years, I have NEVER seen an artist be this honest and open about the rise and the fall of ones career. Larry lays it ALL on the line and this should serve as a wake up call for those that can not handle "life in the fast lane". Larry's story is 24KT solid gold. A real must read from someone who has certainly been there, done that.
The Truth About Drugs and Alchol.......1998-11-08
This book is the greatest thing Larry Wayne has ever written.I've been listening to his music over half of my life and watched all the things he wrote about in this book happen and he told the truth , he didn't try to make himself look like some hero even though he really is. If you have a family member that is fighting the battle with drugs this is a MUST READ it will give you hope. Thanks Larry Wayne for sharing your story, you saved a life.

Book Description
In the small towns of eastern North Carolina in 1928, large families are not unusual. Susie is the fifth of nine children in a strict but comparatively privileged family, headed by a Victorian Father, stimulated by an energetic, happy Mother, and softened by the sanctuary of Granddaddy's farm just outside of town.
Death takes the third child, and the last is born with Downs Syndrome, but life goes on. A new beach cottage in mid-depression is Susie's first hint that there is another world out there.
With Pearl Harbor comes the end of an era. Soldiers from nearby Camp Davis use Burgaw as a "French" village during training. The proper password is required enroute to school each day, and the aircraft spotting tower is manned by local volunteers.
At the beach, the boardwalk is crowded with soldiers and sailors from around the world, mingling with natives and workers from the Wilmington shipyard. Jump joints vibrate with big band music while the summer nights are punctuated by the explosion of German torpedos just a few miles offshore.
Susie's maturing and inquiring mind continually pushes the envelope of her environment; and when high school graduation arrives she realizes that it is truly her "commencement."

Customer Reviews:
Great tool for getting back to communication basics!.......1999-12-08
Book includes 17 one-minute tips to improve meetings. Includes tips for before, during and at the end of the meeting. Also includes 16 one-minute tips to improve business writing. There's also a section with tips to improve your presentations.
I was looking for some basic presentation items to include in a train-the-trainer session. But as I got to looking at some of the other tips, I realized that I could benefit from them, too.
The book has some excellent exercises. The one on 'Are You Paying Fines For Your Company Meetings?' is meant to heighten awareness about the cost of poorly run meetings. Another exercise provides a checklist of items to consider when calling a group meeting that could interfere with productivity. Those are just a few of the really good material covered by this well-done book.

Spike Lee: Interviews (Conversations With Filmmakers Series)
ASIN: 0671644173 |
Book Description
Spike Lee wrote, directed and starred in She's Gotta Have It, the independent-film success story of 1986. Shot on a shoe-string budget of $175,000 in black-and-white 16mm, the film was made with Spike Lee's persistence and talent plus the help of family and friends. It grossed $8 million at the box office and proved to be a major hit with both critics and audiences. Now Spike Lee reveals how he did it, mapping out the entire creative and production processes-from early notebook jottings to film festival awards. Spike Lee's Gotta Have It is a unique document in film literature - it's funny, absorbing, and fresh as the hit film itself.
Customer Reviews:
An inside look at Guerrilla filmmaking.......2000-08-16
Spikes Lee's gotta have it is an essential book for independent filmmakers. It's a book in three parts. The first part begins with an interview of Spike lee By Nelson George sometime after SGHI premiered and he became a big shot. But the second part is the most appealing. It is the production diary in which Spike goes into complete detail how he got she's gotta have it made. The Diary is from the intitla idea to postproduction. It's filled with loads of insights into the struggles he was up against. In fact it's so indepth he even mentiones when his heat and lights go out. Then finally theres the script, which is like the icing on the cake. Hard to find but worth it because you really get to understand how he works and how he got to where he is. Essential!
Customer Reviews:
Much respect to the man.......2005-02-19
This book gave me more insight into the man behind some of my favorite films of all-time. There are a lot of his films I have not seen yet, but after reading the many interviews and getting more out of Lee than ever, I'm motivated to own all of his films. It was cool to see how he comes up with his scripts, some of the challenges he faced in bringing them to life, and some of the criticizing he gets constantly about him, and not his work. He seems to be very aware of who he is and is also aware of the fact he cannot do this alone. He gives props to people throughout the interviews, from the woman who plays Nola in "She's Gotta Have It" to Ernest Dickerson, to Jada Pinkett Smith, to John Singleton, and so on. The one thing I gained more than anything though is he really makes people think when you watch his movies and when you hear or read what he has to say. Love him or hate him, you have to respect him. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of his work and to people who may not know much about him other than what is seen in the media.
SPIKE SPEAKS.......2003-01-21
Shelton Lee is the most controversial film maker of his time because his work defies convention and upsets the conventional values of Hollywood. The spotlight has shone on Spike Lee since his "She's Gotta Have It" exploded on the screen. Spike Lee is a film maker par excellence and is this book we get an opportunity to hear his voice dealing with the entire corpus of his work since 2001.
Spike Lee Interviews is a collection of interviews dating from 1986 through 2001. They are originally reprinted in the form in which they appeared; hardcopy, television and on line. In them we get to hear the ideas, opinions and reflections that Lee has about his craft, the criticism of his work and the need to confront the racist myths prevelant in the film industry. His words are sharp, biting and reflective.
In perusing this book you will see the development of Lee as a film maker and astute businessman. He refuses to co-op his integrity with Hollywood depictions of Blacks and yet he is able to use Hollywood to get some of his pictures made. Lee also uses unusual ideas and film techniques that many of his peers won't touch. He is not afraid to be uncoventional in his story telling nor in his use of new technological forms.
I enjoyed his repartee with the interviewers regarding his controversial image. Spike says his critics need to look at his work rather than him. He doesn't mind talking about his beloved Knicks but moves beyond the game and tells about the exploitation of players and the system. He admits his mistakes in portraying Black women as one dimensional.
In reading this book you will get a multideminsional view of a film maker who has opened a new chapter in African American cinematography. Lee picks up the ball where others left off and challenges the whole idea of what it means to make a film. You will enjoy his ideas and have a deeper appreciation of his work.

A gift of a life: Odyssey of a Romanian Street Child.......2005-04-24
I don't think I could ever be too thankful to Mr Dobrisan and Mr Kachelmyer. Sounds too good for a critic? I must start by saying that this book was given to me as a present by Mr Kachelmyer himself and sent by post to his expense. So yes I could be a little biased.
A street child tells his life.
This is the story of a Why? Why he became a street child, why he lived as a street child and why he could be rescued. This question haunts this book in two dimensions: a road of self discovery and a message for us. In both dimensions the book fails, but not utterly; the writer being sincere is humble enough to accept that our wisdom on human nature is limited yet it wonderfully succedes at giving us hints. Sometimes, on a first thought, I came to think that Catalin, our hero, sounded like a TV preacher but then I relized that there are many ways to do Theology. One is the theoretical approach done in a desk and the witnessing of the vital experience of a loving God who comes to meet us. Catalin lacks in the former, repeating coined words and expressions but, in the name of Jesus, how vibrant, how refreshed how resurrected they are in his lips. If only, or better, when, Catalin will be able to find out his own words, to develop his own theology and anthropology. I pray God will give him that grace.
This is also the story of a How? To be honest, before reading this book I was much more interested in this aspect than in the "Why?". Here the book works quite well. Certainly it is not Shakespeare, just plain English yet if effectively shares his life with us. I only have a desiderata if a second edition were to be made: a "24 hours in the life of a street child" How a typical day, week and year of a street child is. Please keep the plain style, it adds to honesty.
This is *not* all folks!
What's God for a street child? It seems to me that very few has been written on this subject. Mr Kachelmyer's work is not based on the method of phenomenology (sorry for the periphrasis, my limited English is showing) but an experiential account of his findings and reflections. Is it good or bad? No idea, sorry. I have no experience to compare to his. Yet I can tell you this, everything Mr Kachelmyer says smells to Gospel and Psalms, to proverbs and wisdoms.
And yet there is more.
The last two chapter of this book are the condensed wisdom of a man who wants to share it with future workers with street children. That he gave them free to me, a mere wanna be, tells a lot about his character...
Last but not least a short quote
"I told Alex that he had not exactly handled the situation with his biological father as the Bible recommends, but that if he had any trouble with the Lord over it, I would stand with him on the Day of Judgment,"
to which I add, count me in for the defendant party :)
Context: When Alex (another child) asked his parent why he had abandoned him, his parent smacked him to which Alex replied in kind.
Buy this book? Next Question! :)
Warning
This book is written by a Christian who is not ashamed of it in a little bit, if that's a problem for you, don't buy this book :)
worth every leu.......2004-02-17
I just got this book as a gift not three days ago. I read it in a single afternoon. I have to warn you that this is not an easy read. The writing is very simple and easy to understand, but the story is a difficult one to swallow. It is a frank account of the lifestyle of street children, and it is not pretty. I have seen these street kids in cities all over Romania. They are haunting images of neglect. Do not read this book of you are not prepared to have your heart broken.
Interesting and Informative Book.......2003-05-26
I have been to Romania and know something about the plight of the Romanian street children. This book's "been there, done that" account of living on the street was very interesting. It helped fill in the gaps in my understanding of the problem. It clearly explains why the street children exist, about their awful living conditions, about successes and failures working with street children, and more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Romanian street children.
