Not Worth It........2005-12-03
Another complete waste of money and time. This book provided no good information for securing capital, other than small business loans. Mostly based on loans by states, of which only one applies at any given time. Another dust collector for my shelves.
Government Giveaways by Lesko et al........2003-07-16
This is an excellent book for providing insight into the many
government programs available for Americans. There are a
plethora of grants and loans in real estate alone. The programs
serve mostly the poor and middle class. The challenge is to
identify the government grant and get assistance with writing
a proposal-preferably through a grant writer or someone who
has been successful in securing funds previously. The Title I
fix-up loans are the most popular. Many citizens simply are not
aware of what the government gives away and/or the terms.
This work provides a wealth of data on the subject.
It is highly recommended.
What a JOKE.......2003-03-13
I read the reviews and I am florred, this book is HUGE, there is so much information that to be so negative on it only reflects the laziness of the book's reader's, if you want the information and are willing to WORK oh theres that dirty word yes WORK. please, that one reviewer states that he wanted to start a business only to be discouraged by this book, HA I don't buy it, send the letters make the phone calls and you will open new doors, I can't get over the used copies for so cheap this book will cost 5.00 in shipping and handling alone, oh well god bless and have a great life.
Disappointing.......2002-08-24
I bought this book to discover funding ideas for a business I was interested in starting. Unfortunately, I did not find the information I was looking for.
This book is not without merit, but it is not the information source its publishers advertise it to be. There is information for civic groups, minorities, economically challenged people, etc. However, there was not very much information for middle class Americans. I felt it would have been more honest to title the book "Government Funding Sources for Minorities, Economically disadvantaged, and State Goverments."
My advice would be to check it out at your public library first. If you find it useful, then buy it. Otherwise, keep looking.
A waste of your money.......2001-04-21
This book did NOT provide any good information for real business people trying to get money for their business. Save your money by NOT buying this!

The true story of one family's inspirational, year long adventure at sea.
Customer Reviews:
Fun for the entire family.......2003-01-18
This is a book that could be a 13 yr old's fantasy. but it is a true and wondeful account of a family's sailing adventure. It should be read by the entire family, as an after dinner treat or a Saturday morning diversion. Good for discussion
a wonderful adventure.......2002-12-30
beautifully written, this book tells a tale of exotic ports and strange people through the eyes of a teenager. compelling for adult and teen alike. highly recommended!
Cruise of the Blue Dolphin.......2002-12-17
This is a compelling and true account of an amazing adventure. In the middle of the great depression these parents took their kids out of school and exposed them to running a hurricane at sea, exploring the Galapagos Islands before they were settled, visiting a prison island at huge risk where the prisoners were known to shoot at visitors and throw them down wells. No-Holds-Barred home schooling on the open seas! I found it inspirational as a parent and just plain fun to read aloud around the fireplace. My 5 year old always begged for another chapter, I was sad to see it end.
Join in the Adventure.......2002-12-09
Hilarious in parts-Murray's writing is beautiful! A great read!
She throws down the gangway and the reader climbs on board the Blue Dolphin to join the free-thinking Chandlers and their colorful crew as they journey through southern waters, through the Panama Canal to the Galpagos and back.

You have to admire a book with the prologue: "My goal in life is to become the person my dog thinks I am." Suzanne Somers's third book, After the Fall chronicles how she became blackballed from Hollywood after demanding a raise for her role on Three's Company. While she was only asking for pay equal to that of male TV stars of that era ($150,000 a week), she was promptly canned from the show and had difficulty finding acting work for the next decade. Simultaneously, Somers was dealing with her new husband's chilly treatment toward her son from her first marriage, Bruce, and Bruce's reaction to having a stepsister and a stepbrother.
Somers's descriptions of the star-studded Hollywood parties can occasionally become too heavy-handed, and it can be hard to sympathize when Somers says she had to cut back her lavish spending, such as on her $1,500-a-day personal hair stylist and makeup artist. However, readers interested in behind-the-scenes descriptions such as those of inflamed egos on the set of the show, the intricacies of the filming of a Barbara Walters interview, and the drama of choreographing a Las Vegas show will find this book a revealing read, especially given its 16 pages of pictures.
Book Description
In this moving and inspiring follow-up to her New York Times best-selling memoir, Keeping Secrets, Suzanne Somers revisits her years before and after Three's Company and reveals with fearless self-examination how the dizzying rise and fall of her television career mirrored the chaos and conflict in her personal life.
With her usual candor and perspective, Suzanne takes readers inside the rehearsal hall of Three's Company and offers a never-before-seen look at the competition, jealousy, and greed that accompanies a hit TV show. As the lovable
Chrissy Snow, Suzanne Somers became the toast of Hollywood, with all its glittery perks. Yet all was not perfect, she confesses. Simultaneously, her professional success and her relationship with her husband, the love of a lifetime, were being sorely tested as they attempted to blend their families together and were forced to deal with the anger and resentment of their mutual children.
When she became the first female star to ask for the same pay as male television stars, Suzanne was fired from Three's Company and the once-
welcoming doors to the most powerful offices in Hollywood slammed shut. For the better part of the next decade, she was unofficially blackballed from television because of this incident.
In this insightful memoir, Suzanne tells all, from the heady days of stardom to her fall from grace and the grief that followed, to her eventual resurrection as an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and, once again, beloved TV star. Every reader who's ever experienced loss or felt a great opportunity slip through his or her fingers can relate
to Suzanne's story of how she fought back, won
control over her own destiny, and learned lessons along the journey.
Customer Reviews:
Very Entertaining.......2007-06-27
Even if you were a little kid when Three's Company was popular, you will still enjoy this biography. Suzane Somers always kind of annoyed me, but I liked her more after reading this, even though I am sure other people have another side of the story. I liked her first book as well. They are both very detailed, right down to what outfits she was wearing. A good book, I would recommend.
Will give you a greater appreciation of author.......2004-01-30
Enjoyed the taped version of AFTER THE FALL, written and read
by Suzanne Somers . . . it is her third book . . . this one accounts
how she picked herself up, dusted herself off and started all over again
after being dropped from THREE'S COMPANY in its fifth season
It gave me a better appreciation for Somers who had difficulty finding
work for nearly ten years after she dared ask for pay equal to that
of male TV stars of that era . . . she refused to give up, however,
and instead became involved in a hit Las Vegas show, along with
an informational and several books . . . when she resurfaces in 1991
to become one of the stars of another TV show, STEP BY STEP, I
almost cheered.
Very good book!.......2000-06-04
The book AFTER THE FALL is a very interesting autobiography by a charming and talented performer. It describes how Suzanne Somers became one of the the most famous TV performers in the 70s only to become one of the most unsuccessful TV performers of the 80s. She deserved better than what she got on THREE'S COMPANY. It was especially interesting to read about how Suzanne reacted when she met the actress who replaced her on THREE'S COMPANY. The book is also about how Suzanne and her husband blended their families together. Suzanne's husband was very resentful of her son and it was sad to read about the way Bruce was treated for many years. But in the end everything works out for the best. And I can only hope that one day there will be a THREE'S COMPANY reunion?
SUPERB AND WONDERFUL!.......2000-05-25
This book spoke to my heart and I thought it was wonderful and to the point. It showed how you have to take responsibility for what you are and the decisions you make. And also it showed how you can pick yourself up and move on and not have to be stuck in a rut. I encourage any and everyone to read, you'll learn things you never knew.
Who's the real victim here?.......2000-02-20
I'm glad that Suzanne Somers has found peace and happiness in her life. I was disappointed though with her road to peace. She was young and immature when she filmed "Threes Company". I do agree with her that she deserved to be paid as much as a male and it is unfortunate that, at that time, Hollywood didn't think so. Her account of how poor she was as an unwed mother, before her rise to fame, didn't set well with me. California was and is a welfare state. Why didn't she go on public assistance? She spoke to Barbara Walters of the shame of posing nude so she could support her young son. Yet, in Dec. 1984 she posed nude again for "Playboy Magazine". She failed to mention that in the book, yet there is a picture of the cover of "Playboy". Her excessive spending and then sudden loss of income didn't make me cry. Spending $1500.00 each day for make-up and hair styling. That's rent for most people in California. She mentioned how Allens parents were a little uncomfortable of she and Allen spending so much money on elaborate gifts at Christmas time. His parents were very poor when he was little. You would think that she would have remembered her days of struggling as a single mom and how every penny counted. Finally, how in the world could she stay with a man who for years didn't want anything to do with her son! She says that her son always came first. If her son came first, she should have told Allen to take a hike! How could she hear Allen speak to Bruce the way he did and then speak of passionte nights in bed with Allen? I hope that Bruce has truly healed from the hurtful past. However, for him I would recommend a book titled, "Toxic Parents", by Dr. Susan Forward. I come from a broken home and "Toxic Parents" helped me a lot. As for Allen, he should be ashamed. What kind of a role model has he been for Bruce, Stephen and Leslie?
Book Description
With this stunning memoir of growing up in Italian-American New Jersey, Louise DeSalvo proves that your family's past is baked right into the bread you eat.
In Louise DeSalvo's family, in 1950s New Jersey, the kitchen becomes the site for fierce generational battle. As Louise's step-grandmother stubbornly recreates the domestic habits of her Southern Italian peasant upbringing, she clashes painfully with Louise's convenience-food-loving mother, who is set on total Americanization. Louise, meanwhile, dreams of the day when in her own kitchen she'll produce perfect fresh pasta or pan-seared pork chops with fennel. But as Louise grows up to indulge in the kind of amazing food her impoverished ancestors could never have imagined and travels to Italy herself, her adult discoveries give her new insight into the tensions of her childhood. In unearthing the oppressive conditions that led Southern Italians to emigrate en masse to the United States, gaining a subtler understanding of the struggles between her parents and their parents, and starting a more happily food-obsessed family of her own, Louise DeSalvo arrives at a fuller and more compassionate picture of her own roots. And, in the process, she reveals that our image of the festive and bounteous Italian-American kitchen may exist in part to mask a sometimes painful history.

Self analysis, not food lit.......2006-07-20
I usually do not put aside a book before finishing it. In this case, I got about a third of the way through and just skimmed the rest and could not bring myself to read it in detail. I purchased this book hoping (despite prior reviews) that it was more food lit than self analysis. However, the strength of this book is in its description of tense family relationships, and indeed not in its descriptions of food in Desalvo's life. If you are interested in it anyway, good luck - there is a lot of emotion in it.
Still chewing.......2006-04-10
This book is the first in a very long time I've read word by word. Even when I could set aside her subjects, the vitality of DeSalvo's writing style was irresistable for me--elegant, layered, a bit vulgar, self-indulgent, complex, musical, heartbreaking, self-effacing, beautiful.
My maternal grandparents were Italian immigrants to California; my mother and her sisters born in the U.S. DeSalvo's exploration of the Italian culture both here in the States and in the Old County gave me a handhold among my mother's family as no other source has.
You'll either hate this book immediately, like tripe, or inhale it like the best cannoli.
Book as Ipecac.......2005-11-27
OMG....I forced myself to get beyond page 13 and just had to give it up. There really isn't any 'food'in her repetitive writing, but a lot of angst squished up into a white bread samich that apparently NO one wants to eat, each for their own screwed up, twisted reasons.... what this book did for my stomach was put it in knots..... BASTA!
This book makes me happy I am Sicilian NOT "Italian-American".
Not what I expected---far MORE than I expected.......2004-06-25
I picked up this book to read thinking it was like so many other books I have read about Italian-Americans in an attempt to better understand my husband's family---a light-hearted look at the "crazy" antics of a close knit, pasta eating bunch of eccentrics. However, this is not at all what this book is, and what it actually is helped me more than any book I've read in understanding the family I have joined.
When Desalvo says "Crazy in the Kitchen", she is not kidding. Her mother and much of her family really does have seriously crazy tendencies---fury, cruelty, irrational financial habits, long running feuds, etc. And the kitchen is where many of these things are played out---from her mother's poor cooking to her step-grandmother's good but steep in unbreakable traditions cooking, to the cooking and eating of her ancestors in Southern Italy, or the NOT eating---for I finally understood what drove so many Italians to come to America. I had no idea how awful conditions were for the peasants of Italy. What they were subjected to honestly reminded me of accounts of places like Cambodia or China, during the Great Leap Forward.
I learned a great deal about Southern Italian culture from this book, and found myself reading many passages to my husband, a first generation Italian-American who spent much of his youth in Sicily visiting, and who had parents who spoke only Italian, and even he was stunned to find out much of what I read. I now understand my late in-laws much better than I did before this reading.
The writing style of this book took a bit to get used to, until I let myself fall into it. It's written like so many stories told by my in-laws---in a bit of a circular way---you find out a bit here, and a bit there, and it all adds up in the end.
I want to thank Ms. Desalvo for this book. I look forward eagerly to reading the rest of her works.
Excellently written exploration of family interactions.......2004-06-24
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. The descriptions of food were mouthwatering. I appreciated the view into the lives of Italian immigrants and their lives in Italy. The family interactions were well described. Each chapter was a gem of an essay. Unlike many memoire writers, this author sustained the high level of writing and self-exploration to the very end. I really admire her ability to dig into her real feelings and to try to understand her parents and grandparents. I plan to look for other books by this author.

A beautifully written memoir.......2006-10-21
I felt compelled to write this after reading the other reviews because I believe that a book should be judged in accordance with it's own intentions and not by what other people think it should have been. This book is not the typical happy-family-eating-meatballs memoir, nor is it a light, breezy, funny foodie memoir. It is an exquisitely-written, ultimately loving remembrance of a family in pain. It contains great insights into the Italian immigrants' experience-- and a sober, unromanticized look at "The "Old Country" conditions from which many fled in the early 20th century. This book is highly recommended for people struggling with their own family's past, anybody who appreciates beautiful prose and memoir/autobiography, or Italian Americans wanting to explore that part of their past. Ms. DeSalvo uses food as metaphor to great effect in conveying the texture of the immigrant family's experience.
Recommended.......2006-08-26
This is not a book for those wanting a light read or those who haven't honestly looked at their own growing up experiences as second-generation Americans.
Louise De Salvo courageously portrays what life was really like for many us. This is not a happy spaghetti and meatball memoir. It's gritty and at times uncomfortable reading, but well-done. Brava, Louise.
disappointing.......2006-01-29
I found this interesting, but somewhat depressing. With the living conditions in Italy years ago and living in the States with a grandmother, mother, father and daughter was totally different than my family as I was growing up. The cooking in later life with the author and her husband were interesting.
Cathartic for the author?.......2006-01-24
I got this book to read on a trip to Europe. However, I didn't bring the book home with me, because I didn't deem it worthy of the space in my bag. It reads as though its writing was a cathartic experience for the author, to clear the air between her and her family memories. Unfortunately, this does not make for enjoyable reading. The writing itself is technically solid, but the subject matter left a bad taste in my mouth, as though I'd eaten something disagreeable. I came away with an overwhelming sense of disgust and hate, the same senses that pervaded the author's home as she's described it here. This book did not leave me happy or satisfied.
