5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-07-08

Simple fact the rich are not that different but they do hold certain things more important. I didn't like the title too much but the contect is dead on. The class gap in America is growing and reading this book will give you a better understanding of the people who you want to work for, with or ok maybe marry.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had read this in my early twenties or teens.......2007-01-18

I originaly purchased this book to learn how to interact with the rich and how to meet rich potential clients. However it was just what I needed to learn to be the polished lady that is taught to young girls in finishing school. I wished I had this earlier in life (I am in my late 30's and married 3 years). This book is awesome and sure to be a classic. Buy it now because I will never, ever sell my copy.

5 out of 5 stars Saw it on PBS Special "Social Class In America" - FABULOUS.......2006-02-14

What I like about this book is that it is not a gold-digger book - and I do not understand why it is sold with gold digger books. Maybe it is being confused with her other book How To Marry The Rich.

THIS BOOK is for the whole person - to improve your business and social life - and yeah, yeah, if you fall in love with someone who is rich, it tells you how to handle yourself to stand a better chance of marrying the person.

But it is NOT a gold-digger book and anyone who buys it for that purpose will feel as if all the valuable information for business people or breaking into society is just stuffing - which it is not if you are an entrepreneur who needs financial backing or just improving your lot in life.

The author's appearance on PBS was just great and showed how helpful her book can be in helping people beat the social class system.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-04-08

This book had a lot of good information in it. It provides information just as the title describes. Realistic ideas are in the book that would help someone meet and fit in more comfortabley with the rich and upper end clients.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with GREAT USEFUL information.......2003-06-20

I have many of the "marry rich" books and this is the best one on the market! I also have her "how to marry the rich" which is awesome. This book is thick and has MUCH more info.I have used it and it WORKS. The 14 layers of class are great! The best part is how to get into society (i.e. all those exclusive clubs such as the supporting arts and culture, etc.- I tried this and it worked- I am now in!) I have met many wealthy people this way, following the principles in this book.I get invited to great parties and have great female friends who are invaluable to meeting more wealthy men and women! The clothes ideas are ok, but a bit dated and that is the only thing wrong with this book- (it is the year it was written)As far as clothes - the rules are pretty easy use natural materials and quality items- wear what they wear.It is not that hard to figure out, that class is timeless elegance, i.e. sweater sets, silks in bright colors, etc. But this book is worth the price it will change your life if you put it into practice!!

                        Book Description

During the Civil War, it was not uncommon for Army units to have mascots to lift spirits and build loyalty among the soldiers. One of the most famous mascots was Old Abe, a remarkable eagle from Wisconsin. Named in honor of President Lincoln, the eagle became the mascot of the Eighth Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Old Abe was beloved by foot soldiers and officers alike. He made them laugh with his anticsstealing chickens, shaking hands, and creating warmth amidst the harsh conditions of war. Soaring over the battlefields, he rallied his comrades through numerous skirmishes and engagements. When his exploits became larger than life and extolled throughout the country, even the Confederates knew he was a force to be reckoned with and made the bird a target!

The story of Old Abe, the bald eagle that became the mascot of the Eighth Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. It is also the story of the men among whom Old Abe lived: the farmers, loggers, clerks, and immigrants who flocked to the colors in 1861.

4 out of 5 stars Eagle makes good in war effort.......2005-04-24

A rather interesting story of a civil war mascot. Abe was captured as an eaglet in 1860 and donated to the company that was forming near there. It is most telling of the effort from the point of view of the basic infantry that fought the war. At times you understand the confusion surrounding any battle and other times you feel proud that folks just like you and me could acquit themselves so well in face of horrendous circumstances. You do not see the blood and guts but you know that it was there and awful.

The bird may as well have been any other animal, but for some reason, the aura of the bird and, maybe, the name, created a situation that made Old Abe into a symbol of the war effort. This continued for the rest of its life and on into its afterlife as a stuffed bird.

Madonna is the ultimate emperor in new clothes (all pomp, no circumstance), but these Rolling Stone Files collections are well organized, easy to follow, and fascinating in their ability to let us follow a career via some of the best writing in the business. Madonna is a fascinating anomaly because of her almost freakish ambition combined with an appalling lack of real talent. That makes this a very readable collection, even if I never listen to the music or see the godawful movies.

Great if you love Madonna, as I do. Also, good if you are just interested in reading about her. She is fascinating....always has been, always will be. Madonna is a living legend! Also recommend, Encyclopedia Madonnica.....Madonna is absolutely fabulous!

When she married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796, Rose de Beauharnais was a 32-year-old widow who had narrowly escaped the French Revolution's guillotine. She was six years older than he, notorious for her lovers, and unlikely to give him children, but possessed of the social connections and skills the ambitious young general thought would help him rise in the revolutionary army. He gave "his living reverie, his dream of perfect passion" a new name, Josephine--perhaps hoping it would blot out her unsavory past. Instead, she continued to be promiscuous as well as extravagant, and the marriage soured as Napoleon ascended to first consul and then emperor of the French. Yet he divorced her only in 1810, when political events made it clear he must have an heir. This highly colored biography practically wallows in Josephine's lurid personal life, colored in by luscious descriptions of the period's clothes, food, and amusements. The author, whose many previous books mostly deal with English royalty, does not burden readers with excessive doses of French history; the focus is always on Josephine, whose psychology is discussed at length. Erickson succeeds in making her subject an attractive figure, if hardly an exemplar of moral rectitude. Her book should appeal to those who like their historical biographies titillating and not too taxing. --Wendy Smith

                                                  Book Description

In 1804, when Josephine Bonaparte knelt before her husband, Napoleon, to receive the imperial diadem, few in the vast crowd of onlookers were aware of the dark secrets hidden behind the imperial faccedil;ade. To her subjects, she appeared to vet hew most favored woman in France: alluring, wealthy, and with the devoted love of a remarkable husband who was the conqueror of Europe. In actuality, Josephine's life was far darker, for her celebrated allure was fading, her wealth was compromised by massive debt, and her marriage was corroded by infidelity and abuse.Josephine's life story was as turbulent as the age-an era of revolution and social upheaval, of the guillotine, and of frenzied hedonism. With telling psychological depth and compelling literary grace, Carolly Erickson brings the complex, charming, ever-resilient Josephine to life in this memorable portrait, one that carries the reader along every twist and turn of the empress's often thorny path, from the sensual richness of her childhood in the tropics to her final lonely days at Malmaison.

Josephine (1763-1814) was born Rose Tascher on the French colonial island of Dominique. Her father raised her on a failing sugar plantation she wed a disssolute French aristocrat (who wa
executed during the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution)
and had two children by him: Hortense and Eugene.
Josephine met the young Corsican Napoleon and wed him. Napoleon knew she had connections in the government and married her for politcal reasons as well as to satisfy his lustful longings for the fetching Creole.
Josephine was five feet tall, had rotting teeth and was unfaithful to Napoleon (as he was as well!). She could not produce a male heir and the Emperor divorced her to marry Marie Louise of Austria.
Her life was one of glamour, love, rejection by her husband and dissolute living. Josephine was no saint but she was known
                                                  for her loving kindness.
Erickson has written a good biography of Josephine which introduces the reader to a fascinating woman living in amazing times.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Josephine.......2005-06-25

This is a very well written book, and the author keeps the reader captivated as she tells the life story of Josephine, better known as Napoleon's first wife.

For avid history buffs of the Napoleonic era, this book will offer scant new insights. If, however, you are only beginning to learn about the movers and shakers in imperial France, this may be a good jumping off point for you. Bear in mind that everyone is a secondary player to Josephine, so every one presented is colored by how they interacted with her-- and the author's mostly sympathetic portrayal of the woman.

Josephine is not presented as a saint by anymeans in this book. She is, however, given a back story that allows us to have a greater understanding at how she could be both kind and charming while attempting to amass a fortune as a war profiteer.

Ultimately this book is like cotton candy. Sweet and charming but leaving the reader wanting for more. I find that to be a good thing in this case, I'll be reading more about Josephine and her contemporaries in an attempt to gain an even larger understanding of her and the times she lived in.

This was my first read of Carolly Erickson, and I was enthralled by her writing style. Yes, the book reads like a novel, but I don't find this detrimental. One of the biggest problems with historical biographies are they are often heavy and dull, and I don't think this should be the case when describing extraordinary times and events. I felt like I was transplanted "into the period;" and while Josephine had qualities pro and con, I found her to be accessible and human. A lot of times with biographies, I ended hating the subject by the time I am done, because the author relishes revealing the subject's tarnished persona in such an unflattering light. Ms. Erickson's Josephine I liked, despite her evident flaws.

My only complaint would be overindulgence in trivial detail, e.g., her "rotten teeth" and "fading beauty." No one really likes aging, do they?

The true story of the precocious Marie Joseph Rose Tascher of Haiti, who became Josephine, Empress of the French, is better than any fiction and this book is a page turner from the very beginning.

Skillfully told from Josephine's point of view by F. W. Kenyon, "The Emperor's Lady" is the riveting tale of an unusually charming woman cast into extraordinary circumstances. Humble beginnings as an impoverished aristocrat in Haiti, a twist of fate that landed her in France as the emotionally abused wife of the priggish and piggish Alexandre de Beauharnais, the horror of the Revolution and her subsequent struggle to adjust to the new order as an impoverished widow, all set Josephine on a collision course with the up and coming Napoleon. He was instantly captivated, insisted they marry, and though she married him only out of expedience, theirs became one of the great love stories of all time. It wasn't a happily ever after--throughout their marriage, Josephine was tormented by the usual problems; never enough money, getting along with the in-laws, a frequently absent husband, but that the husband was Napoleon and the wife, Josephine--well, that's the story, and Kenyon tells it magnificently.

History has somewhat maligned Josephine, especially the Victorians' view of her as a scheming vixen of loose morals. I think not. She was a woman living in times precarious for everyone, but especially for women. I think this book is a reasonably accurate portrait of the real Josephine; a survivor, and a woman of great warmth, generosity, and possessed of a wicked sense of humor. After all, she did enchant the most powerful man of the age--and no one has ever considered Napoleon gullible. Contemporary accounts of Josephine describe her incomparable grace and charm and one of her enemies said she was "the only woman in the world who could never bore".

Kenyon paints a colorful and engaging picture of an age and its pivotal characters and it's unfortunate that "The Emperor's Lady" is out of print. With so many far inferior books in bookstores these days, this book deserves to be rediscovered by a publisher and made a best seller again.

I also strongly recommend Annemarie Selinko's "Desiree" and Sandra Gulland's Josephine B. trilogy. History will never again seem dry.

11 Cassettes Popular biographer Carolly Erickson creates intimate and richly detailed portraits of her historical subjects. In this book she offers a provocative new perspective on Josephine and her fabled marriage to Napoleon. Josephines story is as turbulent as the revolutionary era in which she livedand even more tantalizing than her reputation. Brought up on the lush island of Martinique, Josephine arrived in Paris with a charming Creole lilt, an earthy West Indian manner, and a sweet, unaffected nature. A disastrous first marriage, financial hardship, and the violent realities of the French Revolutionincluding a stay in the harshest prison in Parisforged her into a survivor. But would she survive her marriage to the insecure military leader from Corsica who would become Emperor of France? Carolly Erickson skillfully draws on historical evidence to reconstruct the rags to riches story of an extraordinary historical figure.

                                                              Book Description

When she married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796, Rose de Beauharnais was a 32-year-old widow who had narrowly escaped the French Revolution's guillotine. She was six years older than he, notorious for her lovers, and unlikely to give him children, but possessed of the social connections and skills the ambitious young general thought would help him rise in the revolutionary army. He gave "his living reverie, his dream of perfect passion" a new name, Josephine - perhaps hoping it would blot out her unsavory past.
