Book Description
This guide to taking your enterprise lean focuses on the steps that management and workers must collectively adopt to transform any organization into a lean operation. While everyone agrees that reducing waste in a factory is a good thing, one must first learn how to recognize bottlenecks, poorly designed workstations, workflow disruptions, and other roadblocks to productivity: then, clear, decisive steps to remove these and all other forms of waste from the factory must be taken. In Implementing Lean Manufacturing Techniques: Making Your System Lean and Living With It, Julian Page draws on experience gained in a wide range of manufacturing environments to provide modern lean alternatives to traditional factory methods. His techniques are fully detailed, practical, workable, durable, and proven in real-life applications, and they are accompanied by step-by-step implementation and evaluation guidelines. Most importantly, the author shows that actions are not enough, the workforce must be taught to accept lean, not have it forced upon them. Examples are provided where necessary, and useful tips and words of caution help guide the reader through sequential steps to becoming lean.
Book Description
When describing kanban implementation most information resources merely reference it without explaining it in technical terms or providing implementation details. Authors James Vatalaro and Robert Taylor address the need for kanban implementation guidance in Implementing a Mixed Model Kanban System: The Lean Replenishment Technique for Pull Production.
Implementing a Mixed Model Kanban System is a comprehensive and in-depth guide to implementing a kanban within the value stream. Its plain-language approach provides step-by-step coverage and guidance of the implementation, metrics, and dynamics of an effective kanban system based on proven reliable methods honed through years of implementation experience within manufacturing and non-manufacturing environments. By focusing on a case study of a manufacturing company trying to create and maintain continuous flow in their value stream. Vatalaro and Taylor show the reader how to construct their own kanban process, from beginning to end.
This book carefully identifies and explains each of the components of a kanban system within the context of pull production. The authors' common sense approach makes this book an excellent "on the floor" resource for all levels of "lean learners."
In addition, a CD-ROM is included, containing the spreadsheets and forms discussed in the text.

If you are new to Kanban, this book is not for you. It only gives a small description on how to run a kanban system.
A methodology for insuring maximum quality at minimal cost.......2005-08-07
The collaborative work of Toyota Production System veterans and experts James C. Vatalaro and Robert E. Taylor, Implementing A Mixed Model Kanban System: The Lean Replenishment Technique For Pull Production spells out the technical details and requirements of implementing a kanban system, a methodology for insuring maximum quality at minimal cost particularly in product manufacturing, within the context of pull production. Chapters explain the principles of kanban in plain terms, tools for applying and managing the system, and frequently asked questions. Simple diagrams, sample charts, and plain language clearly outline the basics in this valuable resource for any business manager or production overseer looking to take advantage of the structure and principles of kanban.
Book Description
Does your company think and act ahead of technological change, ahead of the customer, and ahead of the competition? Thinking strategically requires a company to face these questions with a clear future image of itself. Implementing a Lean Management System lays out a comprehensive management system for aligning the firm's vision of the future with market realities. Based on hoshin management, the Japanese strategic planning method used by top managers for driving TQM throughout an organization, Lean Management is about deploying vision, strategy, and policy to all levels of daily activity. It is an eminently practical methodology emerging out of the implementation of continuous improvement methods and employee involvement. The key tools of this book build on multiskilling, the knowledge of the worker, and an understanding of the role of the new lean manufacturer.

Must Have for a Lean Management Library.......2007-04-02
Thomas Jackson's reference is *the* book to have when considering lean concepts beyond the manufacturing floor. As part of the automotive lean business work group in 1998-2000, I surveyed many different reference guides and this is by far the best. Filled with many diagnostics, surveys, and concepts it is a "must have" for any lean practitioner's library.

Play Ball!: A Tribute to Our National Pastime CD
ASIN: 1590073614 |
Book Description
Larry King is a true-blue baseball fanatic. Going to his first game as a kid in 1940's New York was the start of a lifelong love affair. This heartfelt valentine to America's game evokes a simpler time in our country's history: complete with the smells of popcorn, beer and hot-dogs; the sight of the green, closely-mowed infield; the dark brown dirt paths; the crisp white uniforms; the sound of the excited voices of announcers; the crack of the bat; and the roar of the crowd. Baseball, he discovered, is its own unique universe.
When he finally had the opportunity to personally interview legendary manager Leo Durocher, Larry was so happy that he kept the return phone call for twenty years, just so he could look at it and remember the day. Over his long and distinguished career he's had the opportunity to meet and interview such heroes as Casey Stengel, Jackie Robinson, and Ted Williams. Passion for the game has suffused his life. Even now, he revels in the Orioles and the Mets. Every reason to love baseball is laid out in this nostalgic book, as King gives an inside view to the trading cards, the scuffles the most classic plays, the labor disputes, and the personalities that pervade the sport. It is the only team game without a clock or a designated ending time. Larger-than-life personalities make up its history. Why I Love Baseball will appeal to anyone who recognizes baseball as America's favorite pastime.
King has loved baseball for as long as he can remember, and this ode to the game is truly a love song. You can hear the joy in the author's voice. In a time of serious national focus, Larry King's personal reminiscences and unique view of the impact of baseball is a welcome look at the modern history of the game.

A true read!.......2007-03-14
You don't have to like both Larry King and Baseball to read this book. If you like just one of the two then this is a book you should read. The range of emmotions covered in this novel are, to say the least, sweeping. I highly recommend the audio version read by The King himself. This man has passion, that's all I can say. This is one of those books you cozy up to at the end of a long day. Sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in all things Larry.
HORRIBLE - .......2006-08-12
Larry King tells nice recollections from his childhood about the game, and the book did capture my interest, but as I read I notices a plethora of mistakes, inaccuracies, and errors. It seems that a proofreader did not check many of the facts that Larry King recalls. It got to be somewhat comical as I read finding one mistake after the next. It's also very repetitive - and littered with phrases like, "Can you tell I like baseball," "Can you tell I love uniforms," and the like.
As I read this, I had the feeling that Larry just spoke about baseball into a tape recorder and the words were made into a hastily written book.
I expected much better.
Engaging, Entertaining, But Not Much Depth.......2004-05-23
As an expression of Larry King's sixty-year love affair with baseball, this would have made an enjoyable magazine article. But as a book...if you strip away the Thomas Boswell article, the slightly misquoted Terry Cashman lyrics, and the other padding, you find what seems to be the result of Larry talking into a tape recorder for a couple of hours, with all the positives and negatives that implies. There's plenty of heartfelt enthusiasm here, but little reflection or depth. And as King should know, memory can be faulty, especially with the passage of time. Take his story about his childhood fight with his friend Herbie Cohen, sparked by their position-by-position debate over which team was superior in 1947--King's Dodgers or Cohen's Yankees. As King tells it, they came to blows over who was superior at second base, where he insisted the Dodger rookie Jackie Robinson had the clear edge. The problem with that? As Cohen himself notes when he's quoted elsewhere in the book, Robinson played first base during his rookie season. (Eddie Stanky still patrolled the hot corner for the Bums; Robinson moved to second the next year, after Stanky was traded to the Boston Braves.) This is an entertaining affirmation of King's true love for the sport, but could have offered the reader a lot more.--William C. Hall
An Ode to Baseball.......2004-05-17
Larry King pays homage to his favorite sport in his book "Why I Love Baseball." This book comes from one longtime fan's perspective about the game of baseball over a span of more than 50 years.
This book is filled with anecdotes from King's life relating to baseball, involving his lifelong friend Herbie Cohen, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Baltimore Orioles and their late owner Edward Bennett Williams, President George W. Bush, and many stars from the game. The book can be read by anyone who simply loves the game of baseball and is a great read for the summer.
One may not agree with every opinion and suggestion of King's, but one must respect his unremitting love for the game of baseball.
Larry King Discusses His Favorite Subject.......2004-04-23
It's a well known fact that Larry King has a special place in his heart for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and is now a fan of the Baltimore Orioles. Larry provides us with his sentimental reasons why he loves the game of baseball. I, along with him, share that devotion. Larry quotes former Cardinals' star Enos Slaughter as saying he deliberately spiked Jackie Robinson when running down to first base in Robinson's initial 1947 season. This is interesting since Slaughter has denied he deliberately did it in other books. King also mentions he believes the Jewish Hank Greenberg of the Tigers was deliberately walked during the final month of the season so he wouldn't break Babe Ruth's home run record. Numerous quotes from various players and managers in addition to anecdotes are provided that can be found in several other books. I did find a few mistakes in the book. The first cover of Sports Illustrated showing Eddie Matthews of the Milwaukee Braves batting was taken in County Stadium in Milwaukee, not in St. Louis as King mentions. Also, two of the lines from Terry Cashman's popular 1981 song, "Talkin' Baseball" are incorrect. The line "And Alexander's pitchin' baseballs in Washington" should read "And the Great Alexander is pitchin' again in Washington." The other line given incorrectly is "Seaver, Tommy John, and Vida Blue." It should read, "Seaver, Garvey, Schmidt, and Vida Blue." The final mistake I found involved Tigers' pitcher Bob Cain pitching to the midget Eddie Gaedel in August of 1951. The book reads "Bob Cain got down on his knees to throw the pitch. The catcher sprawled prone to catch the pitch." The photo of this at bat in other books shows Tigers' catcher Bob Swift on his knees to receive Cain's pitches to Gaedel. Cain did not pitch from his knees. Several pages of the book are devoted to baseball writer Tom Boswell's "99 Reasons Why Baseball Is Better than Football." King believes Pete Rose should be voted into Baseball's Hall of Fame but "not be let back in baseball again, certainly not to manage." King also discusses the labor problems in baseball, and believes each team should have a minimum payroll of $70 million and anything over $90 million should pay a tax. I don't disagree with Larry King's love of baseball; I share it. This is a very quick read book, and Larry provides several convincing reasons why baseball is the number one game in America. If you're looking for any in depth information on the game of baseball, Larry didn't write this book for you. You will have to look elsewhere.
Book Description
Reminiscent of Frederick Exley's A Fan's Notes and James Dodson's Final Rounds,
First and Last Seasons is not only a courageously confessional memoir but a work of resounding originality-a Rust Belt requiem for a father written by the black sheep son he leaves behind.
Dan McGraw did not plan to go home to help his father die. To the thirty-nine-year-old Texas-based senior editor for U.S. News & World Report, Cleveland, Ohio, was a million miles away. Dan was the prodigal middle son within a large Irish-Catholic family, and life never really got going until he was far away from the city and his dominant father, Richard. But the gravitational pull of his hometown grew stronger as each year passed by. The final tug home came when the NFL announced that the Cleveland Browns football franchise would be resurrected for the 1999-2000 season. All McGraws and Clevelanders are die-hard Sunday afternoon football fans, and Dan decided to take a leave of absence and cover the Browns' first season. Soon thereafter, Richard was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Dan came home to a press pass and the caretaking chores for a father intent on dying the way he lived, on his own terms.
First and Last Seasons is a heart-wrenching work about fathers and sons, the binding influence of community, and how emotionally disconnected men find a common language in sports. It is also a poignantly funny and charming celebration of one man's life and how his sacrifices and mistakes helped his son find the best part of himself. A beautifully written, intensely personal story, this cathartic chronicle of how Dan participated in his father's final season is sure to speak to the millions of fathers and sons who have trouble finding the voice to express their love for one another.

McGraw running away from the truth.......2002-10-08
While I applaud the author's honesty, I am saddened by his unnwillingness to grow and change from this experience. For all his just-as-I-am bravada, Mr. McGraw, in the end, seems destined to drink away his life as a means of running away from himself. I found it fascinating -- and a tad pathetic -- that he writes with such confidence about his so-called life. But like his drinking, it's obviously just a way of ignoring the truth. His "drink a beer and do it again" life has that swashbuckling feel of life lived boldly. But it's really a selfish life. And I can't help but wonder when he's going to grow up, look in the mirror and ask himself: Is this how I want my daughter to remember me when I'm gone? When she writes her book on me? I can't remember when I've read a book that offered so little hope or inspiration.
This ex-Clevelander loved Dan McGraw's book.......2001-12-23
I must admit being prejudice about this book. This book was written for me.
I grew up in Cleveland in the 70's and 80's and was a big Cleveland Brown's fan. I actually attended the last Championship game a professional Cleveland team won...the 1963 NFL title game. So, I understand the pain Clevelander's have experienced for the past 40 years.
McGraw moves back to Cleveland to spend time with his Father who is dying and to cover the first year experience of the "new" Browns. It sounds like a smaltzy experience, but it is anything but.
The power of the book is the complete honesty that McGraw relates about his Dad and himself. There is no sugar coating of the "good and bad" about their character and their relationship.
McGraw also gives an accurate description of how Cleveland has been homogenized into "any town" USA and gives a feel for today's predictable NFL machine. I'm one of those "don't care about the new Browns" type.
I would love to sit down and have a beer with Dan in one of those old crappy Cleveland bars.
Like life that it describes, the book is a little messy.......2001-09-21
The book was supposed to be about the author spending the first season of the Brown's with his dying father. But like so many things in life it does not go exactly as planned and the father dies after the first preseason game. The author improvises a little and does backwards looks at his relationship with his father. He also examines the strange relationship between a town and its team. The town pays for the stadium to bring the Brown's back, but it is not really a team of the common Clevelander, which is probably true of most of the NFL. While these are the two main topics (the author's relationship with his father and the new Browns) the author bounces around on other topics such as his own drinking issues and race relations in America (or at least Cleveland). In almost every topic he touches he shows how life is almost more complicated and messy that it seems it should be. Overall, a good read for football fans.
Excellent book.......2001-03-25
Dan McGraw made me laugh at deathbed tales and cry about football and it was well worth every page.
This book struck very close to home - literally. MUST READ!.......2001-02-22
I didn't think it possible that anyone could really describe what it was like to grow up in the small Cleveland suburb of Euclid, Ohio, and how it feels to return there as an adult. But Dan McGraw has done just that. Cleveland has been referred to as 'the Land of Oz,' and Dan McGraw's book gives the reader a bitter-sweet taste of what it means to be called a `Clevelander.'
Although I don't personally know Dan McGraw, I grew up right on the Lake Erie lakefront about a mile from where he and his family lived.
His accurate, colorful descriptions of the locations and people in and around the Cleveland area are right on the mark. The book really `tells it like it is' when one is faced with the illness and death of a parent, and one's identity as it relates to their parents and their neighborhood.
What is it like going back to your old neighborhood and finding things have changed but yet remain the same? It is an interesting paradox that really comes out in the story, as does Dan McGraw's attitude as he experiences a myriad of mixed emotions toward life and the city he both loved and hated.
It is a book certainly everyone can identify with, and forces one to raise questions about their own experiences with family and friends, as well as one's upbringing. The book expresses the feeling held by many Clevelanders that growing up in the city by the lake was depressing yet exhilirating, dull yet exciting, comforting yet agitating.
Don't miss this interesting biography of a man who saw through to the inner meaning of what it is to be a son, a father, a caregiver, and a resident of what has got to be the strangest, most unique area in America.
