Book Description

Since 1993, the Information Security Management Handbook has served not only as an everyday reference for information security practitioners but also as an important document for conducting the intense review necessary to prepare for the Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) examination. Now completely revised and updated and in its fifth edition, the handbook maps the ten domains of the Information Security Common Body of Knowledge and provides a complete understanding of all the items in it. This is a must have book, both for preparing for the CISSP exam and as a comprehensive, up-to-date reference.

5 out of 5 stars A multiple vision of IT Security.......2006-03-23

This book is an excellent example of compilation of dozens of good works on IT Security. The quality of articles and the different points of view whereupon are treated turn to it an essential work. It only has a failure: such amount of information has been packed in only a volume that has forced the publisher to reduce both the font and the thickness of the paper to the maximum. Very bad for that no longer we have twenty years and in addition we were used to mark the most interesting paragraphs with a pencil.

4 out of 5 stars Book content is excellent, but paper quality is worst ever.......2005-12-16

I am reading the fifth edition of this book. In the earlier editions the book was published in three or four volumes. The fifth edition is a combination of all volumes. So that is good.

The book is a dense read. But the content is excellent. There are 163 chapters in this book. Each chapter written by different authors - experts in respective areas. So the book provides a best of breed treatment to various assorted topics. However, not all chapters are good (but most are). I'd say about 20 or so are of filler kind of chapters. Nothing really special in them. But the book is worth for the rest of the matter.

The chapters are also written to provoke further thought into each area. Kind of "first principles" approach - which I like compared to the CISSP guide approach of "here is the information, now devour it for the exam". However this book is not an exam guide (and I knew that before hand). I bought this book for the matter in it and I am very satisfied.

If you are the kind of person who want to quickly assimilate and regurgitate the matter for CISSP, then dont even bother. I am kind of person who loves to read things from the basics slowly, getting the concepts and ideas all clear in my mind and hence I plan to finish this book before reading CISSP exam guide (which by the way is also sitting on my bookshelf).

However I have a major complaint againg the publishers. Having charged One hundred thirty dollars for a 2000 page book, I'd expect the quality of paper is decent. The paper is so thin, I invariably turn two pages when I am thiking it is one page. It is so thin, even turning the page carefully damages the paper. I agree that the content is specialized and most authors hold at least two or more certifications (CISSP, CISA, SSCP etc.), but that does not warrant printing the book on really wafer thin transparent paper. Sure, the publishers need to make money, but not by compromising the quality of the paper SO MUCH.

And you'd expect this kind of book to live on your shelf for a long long time than "Teach yourself crap in 24 hours" books, but the quality of paper will make that unlikely. Hence I am giving 4 stars to a book which otherwise would deserve 6 stars

5 out of 5 stars Volumes vs editions.......2005-04-19

Some of the reviewers are confusing 'volumes' with editions. Each edition of this book contains several volumes. Each volume contains new papers, adding them to the current edition of the ISMH.

The current edition of the Information Security Management Handbook is the 5th. At present, it has only 2 volumes. This CD-ROM only contains the 1st volume of the 5th edition. There is a new CD-ROM of the ISMH with a 2005 date (ISBN 0849339422) which I *think* contains the new volume 2 of the 5th edition (ISBN 0849332109)

What makes this CD-ROM valuable over the 5thED-V1 book is that it contains the contents of the 3rd and the 4th editions! I know the 4th edition contained four volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!.......2003-09-04

Excellent reference!

This is an excellent security reference!

If you are looking for a pure CISSP prep book, this is not the best. But for general info sec, this is an awesome book.

              4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-04-18

Contributor Laszlo Andor and editor Martin Summers review the implementation of economic reforms in Eastern Europe. They present a strong critical analysis of the effect of economic reforms on the people in the post Soviet bloc countries. In great detail, they cover the fight to implement Western financial investment policies in order to break communist political legacies. The authors express their dissatisfaction with the results of reforms in the last decade. This is an important book for individuals who want another perspective on the rush to implement western financial policies globally. However, the book assumes some strong background knowledge of the region's political history and the financial concept of globalization. We [...] recommend this book to anyone who does business in Eastern Europe or who is intrigued by the politics of economic reform.

4 out of 5 stars Sharp analysis, sloppy advice.......1998-11-18

Written from a populist perspective, Market Failure does well to analyze the disasters that have overtaken Eastern Europe. The authors have done a good job in relating the political developments in the region to the economic crisis there, and the social breakdown that followed the regression from socialism to capitalism. The decision to focus on food, in one chapter, as an indicator of overall well being (or misery in this case,) was also very apt, and shows up clearly the fallacies of the market fundamentalists who believed that 'shock therapy' and Hayek-Friedman style capitalism were the solution to Eastern Europe's problems. The authors are also on the ball when they compare Eastern Europe's plight to that of the Third World, and when they point out that realpolitik would dictate that E. Europe is inside NATO and outside the EU. However, the authors fail in their advice on two counts. Their analysis of the collapse of the Soviet Bloc is somewhat faulty - it was more a case of a party elite selling out socialism in favour of capitalism, (and whipping up and exploiting popular discontent in order to do so,) than a popular revolt, (see the book Revolution from Above for an indication of this happening in Russia.) Secondly, their suggested solutions to the problems of Eastern Europe, which derive from the theories of Bakunin, Chayanov, E.F. Schumacher, and other naive leftists, is simply not feasible in the age of global capitalist imperialism. In short, they fail to appreciate that Eastern Europe has a simple choice - either the 'free' market or Stalin. In 1989 they made the wrong choice. They're suffering for it now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent on critique and on available alternatives.......1998-09-20

Reviewed by Andrew Kilmister in Labour Focus on Eastern Europe, no. 59, 1998 (re-printed with permission): László Andor and Martin Summers, Market Failure: Eastern Europe's "Economic Miracle" (Pluto Press 1998) pp. vi + 209, ISBN 0 7453 0886 4 (pb), £9.99.

Up until now there has been no general overview of economic developments in Central and Eastern Europe and the former USSR since 1989 written from the left. This book aims to fill that gap. Written by Laszlo Andor, a lecturer at the Budapest University of Economic Sciences associated with the Hungarian Left Alternative grouping, and by Martin Summers who has worked on Eastern Europe for the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development and the New Economics Foundation, it represents a searing attack on the management of economic policy in the region over the last decade. Those determining this policy, both from inside the region as neo-liberal politicians and from outside as economic advisers, are described by Andor and Summers as "Market Maoists" who are undertaking a "Great Bourgeois Cultural Revolution". Like Mao in the Great Leap Forward of 1959 the Market Maoists have substituted an idealist revolution based on a schematic plan for an analysis of concrete realities. This book is designed to outline the effect of this revolution on the peoples of the region and to suggest alternatives. Andor and Summers begin by outlining the context within which transition in Eastern Europe has taken place, with a special focus on the role of the international institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. They compare the activities of these institutions and related `experts' with their roles in other regions, notably Latin America, and argue that differing institutional policies, for example those propounded by Jacques Attali during his period in charge of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have been systematically sidelined. They then move on to discuss the effect of price liberalisation and associated monopolistic exploitation and the reasons for the collapse of production in the early 1990s. This is followed by an account of privatisation and the formation of a "noveau nomenklatura" through the privatisation process and associated corruption. Later chapters deal with agriculture and rural development, inequality both within the region and between Eastern and Western Europe and political developments in the East on both the left and right. The book concludes with an examination of possible alternatives to the Market Maoist approach. Andor and Summers write well and one very attractive feature of their book is the genuine passion and anger about what has been done in the area which shines through their writing and differentiates it from the vast bulk of what has been written on this subject, especially in conventional textbooks. Another strong feature of their account is its range, as detailed above. The book covers a large amount of issues in a relatively short space. However, this also brings with it certain costs. While there are a number of very telling and suggestive statistics, for example on the dramatic decline in food production, they remain illustrative and there is little space for more detailed analysis. This is especially telling in the sections on inequality where it would have been good to have had some more specific information on the growth and nature of divisions within Eastern Europe since these have been largely ignored in more orthodox accounts. There are also costs associated with trying to cover such a wide range of countries within a single account. In particular there is no real discussion of the extent to which the former Soviet Union exemplifies a distinctively different pattern of transition from that in Eastern and Central Europe. In many ways the most interesting aspect of Andor and Summers' account is their analysis of alternatives. They consider a very diverse set of perspectives here. When writing about privatisation they draw a distinction between Anglo-American capitalism and that practiced in Japan and Germany. The implication is that the Eastern European privatisation programmes are the result of opting for an Anglo-American model and that this was a mistake compared to the Japanese-German alternative. In their final chapter Andor and Summers discuss a number of more specific alternative policy proposals. One of these is that put forward in 1991 by the Polish economist Marek Gruchelski. This was essentially a policy of work sharing, with each worker working every second day to preserve employment during the transition. It would have been interesting to have related this more explicitly to the current debates in Western Europe, particularly France and Italy, on the shorter working week. Other models discussed include the Scottish Community Business movement, Chinese Township and Village Enterprises and credit unions. Finally the authors argue for increased co-operation within Eastern Europe, at least to the level of a payments union. The range of alternatives analysed here shows two strengths of the book; firstly, the insistence throughout that the Market Maoist model with its disastrous consequences was not an inevitable response to the crisis of Stalinist planning and secondly, the authors' willingness to consider concrete issues of policy as well as to describe problems. However, their sheer range and the obvious conflicts that exist between some of them also indicate that this book can only be a start in initiating a critical discussion of the orthodox approach to the East European transition. Andor and Summers would surely be the first to recognise this: they conclude by writing that `if this short book has helped to educate the reader about the nature of the problems we all face and stimulated further informed reflection and committed action, then it will have served its purpose' (p. 191). It is to be hoped that the book will have this effect and will encourage an overdue investigation of possible ways forward in Eastern Europe that will also convey lessons for those opposing Market Maoism in other parts of the world.

4 out of 5 stars An insightful book on the career of a legendary Hollywood PI.......1997-11-18

I disagree with the review which states Don over uses his poetic license to show the reader he "saves the day", that's what private investigators do. People hire private investigators to succeed, and that's what Don does. Crutchfield captures the essence of the "old guard" gum shoe. The old guard uses congnition instead of ammunition. I purchased Don's book in Boca Raton, FL recently while I was conducting a case, and found it to be well written, certainly in the style of a very professional private investigator. The case histories and side commentary really hits home. I look forward to some day in which I can meet Don and tell him how much he's influenced my career. Patrick K. 4 out of 5 stars I'd give it a B+ rating.......1997-08-27

I thought this book was pretty good. Don Crutchfield wrote as if he was talking to you. If you like gossip and juicy hearsay, this is the book for you. He has inside stories to the Beatles, Marlon Brando, Terry Moore, Jerry Lewis, Michael Jackson, and more. I've read other "tell all" books before, but what I thought Don brought, that other autthors couldn't, was a objective perspective to these celebrities' lives. As far as I know, these stories are true but I'm sure a little embellished. The one thing that got on my nerves was the way Don always came out as the hero, the one guy who was right, "If if wasn't for me...". That theme was all worn out by Chapter 3. Overall, just fun, light entertainment.

                  Book Description

Published to strong reviews and major media attention, this heartfelt and inspirational rags–to–riches memoir by the highly regarded CEO of Parade Publications tells the emotional story of how he came to terms with an identity and a family that he never knew he had until he reached middle age.

Meant To Be begins when Anderson, a 21–year–old Marine returns from service to say goodbye to his dying father and tries to find the answer to a question that has inexplicably haunted him from his earliest years: Was the alcoholic, abusive man who has so tormented him in his childhood his real father? Shockingly, the answer turns out to be "No." Unbeknown to him, at least until that point, his mother, a German Protestant, fell in love during World War II with a Russian Jew and bore his child. Anderson learns this information as a young man but he and his mother keep this secret for another 35 years, until the day Anderson – now an unusually successful publishing executive – meets an unknown brother who, it turns out, has lived a nearly parallel life. Meant To Be is a love story, a journey of self–discovery and spirituality, and a provocative challenge to common notions about the role of heredity in our lives.

I thought this sounded like a great book. It had all the makings for a great book but it just didn't get there for me. I enjoyed hearing about Walter Anderson's life growing up and I felt for him. I thought he was one smart and tough cookie. I think for me the book sort of fell apart at the end when he connects with his half brother. For me it just didn't live up to the build up that the reviews and book jacket gave it.
I think I would have been a happier reader if the story had just focused on his success as a person and less on him finding his half brother.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Family Story & more...........2006-08-30

Walter Anderson's story of his experiences as an abused child, son without a loving father, confused young man, Viet Nam soldier & veteran, young writer, seeker of his own personal truth, and seeker of a truth bigger than his own. This book goes beyond personal memoir. It is about the generation who came of age in post WWII, being the son of a WWII veteran who was abused in his childhood and tortured in war, and ultimately being the true offspring of a Jewish man his mother had an affair with during the war. There are many books about how childhood abuse impacts women. This book gave insight into how men are impacted by such abuse, cultural expectations of toughness and violence, and then the traumas of war....creating men who oftentimes become the men they swore they would never become, alcoholics who abuse those closest to them. I believe Anderson was able to escape this destiny because on some level he did think differently (perhaps like his birthfather), but also because of the love of three wonderful loving women: his mother Ethel, the teacher Mrs. Williams, and his wife of over 30 yrs., Loretta. I was most moved by Anderson's comments & statements when visiting the Soviet Union in the 1980's. His definition of soul and his courage in speaking out on behalf of Jews in Russia were the best parts of the book. Inspiring and moving.

Sad at times, but unable to put it down. The book draws you in...knowing/feeling the courage this person has. He reveals the truth about his life and tells this inspirational story..and you must read it.

One of the most powerful narratives I've ever read.

Not just because the author overcame great odds to go on and achieve great things, but because he honestly describes his lack of faith in God and then describes the day he comes to believe in the God of his real father.

I can't say enough good things about this book, so, I'm just buying copies for all my friends, and letting them see for themselves.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Time-Management Pocketbook.......2000-03-31

A very compact and useful 120 page presentation on core time management principles, and tools ready to use in the workplace, by undergraduate business students, or consultants.

Topics include: managing work activities, managing your thinking and reasoning, managing relationships, managing communications, and managing your work environment. Tools include: Pareto, importance vs urgency matrix, delegation checklists, mind-maps, fishbone diagrams, stress management and more.

The material is well presented in the context of business needs. On the negative side, the content is dated, and the compact format limits the number of toolsets and the extent of discussion of contemporary time/project management software.

                                        Book Description

This is the first substantial reference work in English on the various forms that constitute "life writing." As this term suggests, the Encyclopedia explores not only autobiography and biography proper, but also letters, diaries, memoirs, family histories, case histories, and other ways in which individual lives have been recorded and structured. It includes entries on genres and subgenres, national and regional traditions from around the world, and important auto-biographical writers, as well as articles on related areas such as oral history, anthropology, testimonies, and the representation of life stories in non-verbal art forms.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2004-12-17

As a graduate student in English I have found this encyclopedia to be an invaluable resource because it centralizes a huge amount of information in the ever-expanding field of life writing very succinctly. This is the first encyclopedia of its kind and I would encourge more libraries to carry it as it is a great starting place for papers. Plus, the entries are extremely well-written and are by leading scholars in the field.
Overall, it is an extremely helpful tool for anyone with an interest in any of the many forms of life writing.

                                          Book Description

In Louis Armstrong and Paul Whiteman the jazz scholar Joshua Berrett offers a provocative revision of the history of early jazz by focusing on two of its most notable practitioners—Whiteman, legendary in his day, and Armstrong, a legend ever since.
Paul Whiteman’s fame was unmatched throughout the twenties. Bix Beiderbecke, Bing Crosby, and Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey honed their craft on his bandstand. Celebrated as the “King of Jazz” in 1930 in a Universal Studios feature film, Whiteman’s imperium has declined considerably since. The legend of Louis Armstrong, in contrast, grows ever more lustrous: for decades it has been Armstrong, not Whiteman, who has worn the king’s crown.
This dual biography explores these diverging legacies in the context of race, commerce, and the history of early jazz. Early jazz, Berrett argues, was not a story of black innovators and white usurpers. In this book, a much richer, more complicated story emerges—a story of cross-influences, sidemen, sundry movers and shakers who were all part of a collective experience that transcended the category of race. In the world of early jazz, Berrett contends, kingdoms had no borders.

Hey, look, I'm for the Post-Canonical approach to criticism and history as much as the next guy...MORE than the next guy. But this book is over the top. It is certainly well researched. But all of its scholarship only serves to conflate and confuse Cultural History and Musical History...not to speak of the beating it gives to poor Aesthetics. It talks about "relegating Whiteman to the position of a marginal figure". Well, Joshua, in terms of Cultural History, Whiteman is not a marginal figure. But musically he is!!! I'm sorry, but that's true!!! Bix is amazing and a genius, Challis' arrangements are incredible, even if often really, really dated. Trumbauer is certainly worth studying and and listening to, even if he's ultimately quite disappointing. Some of the things Whiteman commissioned (besides Rhapsody in Blue) are interesting and worth knowing. But none of this comes close to making a case for studying Whiteman as a parallel figure to Armstrong! Armstrong's MUSIC requires patience. I don't think it necessarily reveals itself IMMEDIATELY to the modern listener. But still!!! Once you get it, it requires no special pleading, no historical excuses. And this is just not not true of Whiteman. Some of the records are really special, and I do appreciate Berrett's analysis of the famous recording of Washboard Blues. There are a few of these moments, both in the book and in Whiteman's career, and certainly there needs to be recognition of such moments. Gunther Schuller certainly went a long way in his writings on Whiteman in his book Early Jazz. And I also agree that Armstrong's career situates itself within the general history of American Popular Music, and not in some rarefied realm of Afro - American Demotic Art Music. And that the more writing that explores that, the better. But Berrett's thinking is so messy and so unclear. He makes Richard Sudhalter look like a great Philosopher/Historian like George Steiner !!! At least you always know that Sudhalter's passions, even if lopsided, come out of a genuine and informed LOVE for the music he writes about. Here, I'm not always sure...And one more thing: this is the Worst - Edited Book I've seen in a long time!!!! Whole passages return, over and over, like some kind of incantation. It is so padded that it's unbelievable. Forget about Post-Modern critics - let's train some editors!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and brilliant analysis .......2005-08-02

Joshua Berrett has presented a brilliant analysis in a new and thoughtful way. Without undercutting Louis Armstrong's place as a giant and perhaps America's greatest musical genius, he also presents Whiteman's importance in jazz history. Berrett presents a fantastic and insightful social and cultural analysis of why the musical establishment deems it necessary to place Whiteman in such a low and undeserving position in American music history.

There are many histories of jazz -- some purely factual, some scholarly as well as thoughtful, original, and insightful. Joshua Berrett, for whom jazz is obviously an integral part of life, writes the latter kind of history. His book is informative, intelligent, with knowledge and love of his subject. Mr. Berrett writes beautifully, which I found helpful in absorbing his subject. This book is one of the great and memorable studies of the roots and meaning of jazz. If you have any feeling for jazz, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Parallel histories, personal stories.......2005-02-07

"Louis Armstrong & Paul Whiteman: Two Kings Of Jazz" is a carefully researched and artfully reported description of the lives and careers of two 20th Century music legends whose public stories are well-known. Here, as he presents the parallel histories of Satchmo and Whiteman, Prof. Berrett reports and analyzes some of the less-familiar private incidents and events that color their personal stories. Everything reported here, however juicy and including some less-than-respectable anecdotes, is well-documented and authenticated with comprehensive notes.

Did you know, for example, that Bing Crosby's recording of "Star Dust," widely believed to be backed by the Whiteman Orchestra, was recorded on 19 August 1931 at a point where he was no longer with Whiteman? Crosby had left Whiteman and the orchestra about 16 months earlier following mounting tensions between them. Berrett documents several reasons for the rupture, all of them touching on Crosby's alcoholism. For one thing, it was said that Crosby owed a bootlegger money for a quart of "day-old pop-skull" and Whiteman, having to foot the bill, deducted the amount from Crosby's salary. There were allegations that Whiteman humiliated Crosby in front of the band, accusing Crosby of stealing Whiteman's own liquor. No wonder Crosby quit!

Did you know, for example, that Satchmo recorded "Rockin' Chair" 29 times between 1929 and 1971, most frequently with his . . . "gin-swilling partner in musical crime and favorite male vocal foil. . ." trombonist Jack Teagarden. Teagarden, Berrett reminds us, was a vibrant presence, a ready mix of music and high spirits, who was also significant to the career of Paul Whiteman between 1933 and 1938. And this is the heart of Berrett's report, a steady stream of parallel personalities and events that mirrors and colors the musical history of both Whiteman and Armstrong.

Musicians and historians, not to mention fans of Satchmo and Whiteman, as well as jazz lovers of any ilk, will treasure this volume. I did.
