A useful business tool.......2004-02-25

I should start by declaring an interest here - I have attended workshops at Better Communications, the company whose founder wrote this book, and have a friend who works for the company. I think I can say, though, that that has not swayed my judgment on the book (and no money or other favors have changed hands for this review...).

The Instant-Answer Guide to Business Writing, subtitled "An A-Z Source for Today's Business Writer", is a remarkable compendium of contemporary English. Although it contains many of the elements of Fowler's Modern English Usage, it also does a lot that is different. One reason for that is that it was written by Deborah Dumaine, the founder of Better Communications, a company that offers workshops on writing for the corporate world.

This is reflected in the book's opening section, which gives an introduction to the company's "Reader-Centered Writing" technique. References throughout take you back to this method, whose goal is to enable people to compose compelling business documents.

The book, however, is largely self-standing as a guide to writing English in the modern business world, arranged alphabetically by topic. It covers the basics of grammar and syntax, as well as the more strategic issues of writing well for one's reader.

At the most basic level of punctuation, the book sets out clear rules on where to put that apostrophe (and on whether you should be using one at all); guides you on how to write dates; and suggests where to use a dash rather than a colon. At the level of grammar, there are sections on how to ensure that you are consistent in your use of singulars and plurals; on "that" and "which" in different kinds of modifying clause; and on the avoidance of the "dangling" participle.

On the broader issue of communicating effectively, there are many entries on writing clearly and concisely, and on presenting your words visually in a way that draws in the reader.

Throughout the book, there are frequent examples of the right and wrong ways of doing something, and there is a substantial (and useful) appendix of model documents. The index works well; it enabled me to find almost everything I was looking for.

The book keeps pace with the times. There is an entry on "sexist language: how to avoid it" and a long one on "e-mail: how to write a compelling message". If the more abstruse grammatical entries might seem pedantic to some readers, there are a good many which have obvious and immediate relevance to the contemporary workplace.

Process is a big thing in the Reader-Centered Writing world: what steps do you need to take to get to the well-structured, cogent piece? This finds expression in the introduction, in the entries on drafting and editing, and in the long section on writing as a team.

The book does not stop at language as narrowly defined, but includes pieces on charts and graphs, on the use of color in documents, and on presentations. The last gives an example of one of Better Communications' Focus Sheets, a means of ensuring that what is written conveys the writer's purpose and meets the needs of the reader.

Better Communications' workshops are as much about getting business done effectively as they are about the language that acts as the medium. So the book has sections on broader business issues, seen through the prism of language.

Some may find this mixing of entries on language and business disconcerting. That, however, is the message of the book. Organized writing is the key to being organized and effective in business. The link is not an accident: the processes of thought, the expression of that thought and its execution in the workplace can't be separated. If someone writes well by the Better Communications standard, they start off with a distinct advantage in the corporate environment over someone who does not.

Others may think that the many sections devoted to the minutiae of grammar are unnecessarily picky, bordering on the pedantic, and not really relevant to the fast pace at which the modern world works. That may be true to a degree, but another message of the book is that detail is important, both to conveying one's precise meaning and to giving the right impression to business colleagues and customers.

While the book is nothing if not thorough and meticulous, it is not pompous or patronizing. Neither is it objectionably prescriptive: it acknowledges that language evolves and that there can different ways of doing things; but there are limits and where something is simply wrong the author says so. No sloppiness in this classroom...

Who is the book for? Certainly for people who are fascinated by language - they will take immense pleasure in dipping into the entries. However literate they think they are, they will find something they did not know before, whether they agree with it or not.

Should every executive have one on his or her (or should it be "their"?) bookshelf? Yes, if they are at all concerned about the quality of their writing and see improving it as one of the keys to being more successful in the workplace. The Instant-Answer Guide is an outstanding reference source for pretty much anything to do with written business English.

To make the very most of the book and the method which inspired it, though, they may have to attend one of Better Communications' workshops. But there, I said that I was going to be objective.

Excellent Resource.......2003-08-20

After reading and using this great book I gained the confidence I needed to write more professional business documents and e-mails. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to communicate clearly within the workplace and with clients. Great easy-to-use tips and guidelines made it easy.

The Alamo hero no one knew.......2007-02-02

I don't often review books that I sell, via Amazon, but this one is an exception. I found the topic of interest, as I had never heard of Susanna. At first I thought it to be a fictional tale, "Oh Susanna..."
but it's not. It's the story of a real woman who survived the battle of the Alamo, along w/ her young daughter. Her husband, and all the other men from the Alamo were not so fortunate.

With great strength of character, even during her grief, she stood up to Santa Anna refusing his offers of charity. She carried the tale of the Alamo defeat to San Houston. Her message helped to galvanize -- motivate -- the troops to push on towards victory.

Written by John Jakes, this is not a tale for young pre-school aged children. It's definately more of a historical sort of resource for those doing research or interested in that time/era/place.

Historic value in Susanna of the Alamo.......2000-06-24

Susanna of the Alamo is an excellent book that enables children to place themselves within a historical event. Susanna of the Alamo focuses on the only survivor of the tragic Alamo fight, Susanna Dickinson and her infant daughter. THe story is told from her point of view which gives the children today the ability to understand the fight as it was unfolding. I teach 5th graders and every year the book has brouight a tear to an eye and a solemn calm to my room. The children are able to place themselves in theat time period through Jakes work and not only understand what the Texas settlers felt but how they felt also. It is an excellent book with which to teach about the Alamo- I couldn't do it without it!

I recently purchased this book after a visit to the Alamo. I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet Ms. Ragsdale. This book portrays an aspect of history that is rarely seen. Most Americans learn about the fall of the Alamo in their history classes. However, this is the first time I have had the joy to read about those who were also within the Alamo's walls, the women. These women endured a great catastrophe with honor and grace. It is quite refreshing to be given the opportunity to read about the others who participated in our country's growth and freedom. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American History, Women's Studies or in general. It is a book that moves you and brings you to the Alamo. It helps one to read it and imagine the scenes that were occurring at that point in time. A great read!

This study analyzes how overall changes in political and economic life during the last decade have affected the Estonian coastal fishery of the Baltic Sea. At the beginning of the nineties, the opportunity to export fish to the European market emerged. Opening of this new market resulted in rapidly increasing pressure on fish stocks. Some of the most important coastal fishery resources were over-fished because of high export market demand coupled with insufficient resource management and ineffective control and enforcement mechanisms. The costs associated with fishery have grown much more than the first-buyer prices. Additionally, dynamic development of the Estonian economy has resulted in substantial increases in earnings in other economic sectors and therefore the relative wealth of fishermen has steadily declined. This has resulted in increasing social problems. In conclusion, countries in transition may encounter serious difficulties in the fisheries sector, arising from privatization and economic reforms, which may affect the fisheries even years after the establishment of new ruling principles.

A nicely written autobiography of a young girl during the invasion and occupation of Norway by the Nazi's. Drama, horror of war, human interest, naval battle action. Relevant facts of the occupation (which could not have been known by the author at the time of occupation) are thrown in for context.
Great for home if interested in subject area/time.
Would recommend for middle school/high school libraries, especially if curriculum has 'man's inhumanity' or 'youth and WWII' type requirements.

Good 2nd or 3rd book.......2007-09-14

This book is good, but not great. I would recommend this as a good 2nd or 3rd book to have. Start of with Robert Montauk, as it will provide better context for this this book.

Another thing to note is that thhese are not 65 complete applications, rather 65 essays. I was a little bummber when I realized that.

Nice to Have.......2006-09-30

Although I do recommend this book for MBA hopefuls looking to get into top 30 schools - not just HBS, I want to add that this is a "nice to have" for the prospective MBA student. It is not a "must have." The sample essays here will inspire you in that, you will see that to get admitted, you don't actually have to be all that great of a writer. In fact, you might read this and wonder just HOW some of these essays led to admission. But I think this shows what I read one admissions officer say about getting in - those who are admitted to top b-schools typically show how they did seemingly ordinary things in an extraordinary way. What I also like about this book of essays is that it shows you how some "broke the mold" and were creative in their approach - yet still ultimately successful. There are some "cookie cutter" essays here, but there are actually some that are very creative and engaging.

A few words of advice if you buy this - one, make sure you pair this with a more comprehensive book on MBA admissions, such as Richard Montauk's,"How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs." Two, remember that you don't have all of the information to evaluate the candidates whose essays are featured. Three, take a look at this book AFTER you've drafted your essays. I know it's tempting to want to see examples when you are having a hard time drafting your own work, but I'd advise only looking at example essays after you've done the hard (and sometimes frustrating) work of completing an entire set of your own essays. This will help to ensure that you are crafting your essays in your voice and in your own unique way. Look at these examples as one way to help you drive your revisions. Four, after you read an essay in this book - do your own analysis of the essay first - before you read the analysis that comes after the essay. Then compare your analysis with the analysis in the book.

Basically, do some really hard work - don't read these before drafting your essays. Do your own analysis of the featured essays. What I believe is that this type of hard work will strengthen your own candidacy and application more than trying to read the samples first and then have what you read influence and drive your first drafts.

Good Samples & Analysis.......2005-08-10

Different from other essay collection books, it straightly starts with real sample essays & analysis, and both sample and analysis are great. What I like most of this essay, it removes the boring parts of some general direction on "how to write essays." Instead it has analysis of each essay, and it helps me to design my essay greatly. However, if someone needs the guideline of writing essay by each topic, he or she may need one more book.

Thoughts about this book.......2005-05-14

This book shows you application essays of people who have been accepted to HBS. The editors also comment each essay.

Overall, I'd say the book offers a pretty good overview, it may trigger some thoughts and give indications as to 1) what the application office might be looking for, 2) the characteristics of a typical HBS student. I like the fact that the editors comment both strengths and weaknesses of each essay.

Some 'issues':

1. The book is created by the Harbus news corporation, an independent nonprofit entity, not the Harvard Business School. Since the essays were not chosen/commented by the admissions office, the sample may not properly represent typical entries (perhaps only the 'best ones', perhaps only ones by students/friends who the editor personally knows etc), nor the factors that actually determine admission (for sure they show factors that _the editors BELIEVE_ are important for admission).

2. You will not see any examples of how NOT to write your essay. Such a contrasting view would have been useful for figuring out exactly what the admission office is looking for, what they want to learn about you as an applicant/potential member of the community.

3. You will not see examples of essays of ppl who were accepted to other comparable schools, hence it is difficult to figure out exactly what make HBS students different from typical students at i.e. at Kellogg, Stanford, Wharton.

Usuage: I'd have a look at this book before writing my HBS apps, then contrast my impression of HBS students and the HBS community with what I have learned about the students and community of other schools, following which I'd use this knowledge to properly design essays that match my impression of what the adm office wants to learn about me. With some drafts at hand, I'd show my essays to an alumni/discuss with him/her how to go about/tweak the application.

Shepard tells the story of his wounding at the Battle of the Wilderness, his subsequent care at a nearby Confederate hospital, and his repatriation by a Union force sent specifically to recapture their wounded comrades. The editor of this volume, Raymond W. Smith, is a Historical Preservation Program Analyst in the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, & Historical Preservation in Albany, NY. Mr. Smith discovered Shepard's unsigned manuscript in the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society in an old ledger from the Adirondack Lodge in Brantingham Lake, NY. The story of Smith's search for the author of the ms, recounted in this book's introduction, is itself a treatise on historical research. Little book with a big story!.......2007-03-12

Cpl. Norton C. Shepard was the fifth member of his family to enlist in the Union Army. He was in the 146th New York Volunteer Infantry also known as the Fifth Oneida, or Garrards Zouaves. At the Battle of the Wilderness he was wounded in the right shoulder, right side, and through the right elbow joint, breaking the bone and shattering the joint. He was left in this condition behind enemy lines.
The story that follows tells of his conversations and interactions with the Rebels as well as his incredible survival. It is filled with details of his experience and makes for a great read.

A great battle memoir!.......2005-05-16

This is one of the best narrative's of a common Civil War soldier's experiences in battle that I've ever read. The only draw-back is that the story is so short, but that should not prevent you from reading it. Shepard was a member of the 146th New York Volunteer Infantry, also know as Garrard's Zouaves or the Fifth Oneida. Shepard was one of the many casualties the 146th suffered in Saunder's Field on the first day of the Battle of the Wilderness. He recounts not only the battle, but his wounding and being taken prisoner. When I visited the Wilderness battlefield I took the book with me and re-read it as I literally walked in Shepard's footsteps on the very site where most of the narrative takes place.

A Truly magnificent voice.!!.......2007-10-05

I grew up in San Pedro California and anyone listening at that time can remember the shout "burn baby burn" (even before the riots)or "give me four and a half more bars" where Magnificent would put the needle back on the record randomly and extend the record another 3-4 minutes.
