    Book Description

Privatization has dominated industrial restructuring programs since the 1980s and continues to do so. This authoritative and accessible Handbook considers all aspects of this key issue, including: the theory of privatization; privatization in transition, developed and developing economies; as well the economic regulation of privatized industries.

The studies in this volume, now available in paperback, introduced by international experts in the field presents evidence of the scope and effects of privatization, and consequently provide the basis for improving both policy formulation and implementation. However, they also emphasize that privatization is not an end in itself. It is argued that for privatization to be worthwhile and for lasting economic efficiency gains to be achieved, supporting reforms must accompany most privatization programs, particularly in the arenas of corporate governance and capital markets, product market competition, and state regulatory processes. Furthermore, several contributions demonstrate that the degree to which ownership and market liberalization can be usefully separated, and whether privatization without either competition or effective regulation is worthwhile, remain controversial issues.

Furnishing the reader with a comprehensive and lively discussion of privatization in theory and practice, this Handbook will be the essential source of information for researchers in the field, and for a wide-ranging audience including public policy makers and specialists, development experts and agencies, international banks, public policy and regulation economists, and management consultants.

4 out of 5 stars Just what it is.......2002-08-06

A very useful book. A little too heavy on the American stuff that I have little interest in. Those pages could've been filled with more international information. C'est la vie. Good facts.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those who love information........2002-01-08

I buy the new one each year. The World Almanac is my favorite fact book. As a writer, I require the best information possible. I trust this book. But I also enjoy it. I enjoy the trivia. I love to find out how old my favorite stars are. Who is living and who is dead. Just about everything you want to know is in this book. So I suggest you buy a new copy each year. They're informative but they're also fun!

5 out of 5 stars It May Not Have The Sex Appeal of the Internet.......2001-08-16

As a professional author with my debut novel in its initial release, I know I don't need THE WOLRD ALMANAC in this Internet Age. I can find anything I want to know by surfing across the World Wide Web. Despite that knowledge, I buy a new almanac annually. It rests on my desk next to my dictionary, and I use it more often. A day doesn't go by while I'm working that I don't use the almanac to check a fact or confirm some information. Its facts are accurate, unlike some Internet "facts" and information can be easily found without resorting to a search engine. I've had a new almanac every year since I was in the fourth grade, and I am certain I will get a new one every year until I die.

Because they issued a new edition in 2001, I wrongfully assumed it would include the 2000 census information. It doesn't. It comments on the 2000 election, but yet doesn't list George W. as the most recent president. Deadlines came before content.

5 out of 5 stars A huge wealth of information.......2004-01-17

This almanac is a great source of a huge variety of information. It's loaded with many charts and statistics on just about anything you can think of. From the population of major cities to the Nobel Prize awards you can always trust the Almanac to be useful. Finding information in this almanac is simple because of the index in the front and the quick index on the back cover.

Sometimes when I'm bored I pick up this almanac and find myself browsing through all the interesting information. This is a great book that can actually be fun to read and educational.

                              5 out of 5 stars BUY IT.......2002-07-19

This is this one of those items you must have around the house, it has so much useful info, and just facts you always wanted to know, and should know. Easy to naviagte through, a must buy item for every household.

                              2 out of 5 stars Quite Boring.......2002-07-08

A good reference book, but quite boring for pleasure reading.

4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Annual Tool, and an entertaing read!.......2002-04-04

I have bought this book every year for at least the last 20 years, and wouldn't miss it for the World. It provides a synopsis of the past years events, as well as a lot of science, entertainment and sports news. The facts and figures (population figures of several cities, Government represetatives, etc.) are also fascinating. To some, it would be a great source of business information, if that's what you're looking for.

It's only shortcoming this year, was it's failure to cover the 2001 World Series. Even though the games were held later than usual due to 9/11, it was only by a couple of weeks. They should have delayed publication until it's completion so that coverage of the games could be included.

I've purchased other annual almanacs, but this is only one I buy every year, and is by far the best of the breed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book of Facts!.......2002-01-10

I gave this to my husband for Christmas, and he has not been able to put it down since! We couldn't believe that it already had everything from the September 11 tragedy in there. It is a real keepsake item!

                              5 out of 5 stars Thaksin Shinawatra.......2006-06-30

Authors Ukrist Pathmanand and Duncan McCargo provide a perfectly
timed and well written book that concisely and directly presents the facts. The authors immediately note this isn't a political biography of Thaksin Shinawatra. There is a lot of information in this book about his background, businesses, and political life.

The "Thaksinization of Thailand" focuses on 5 elements:

                              1. Telecommunications business.
                              2. Thai Rak Thai political party.
                              3. Thaksin's use of language and media.
                              4. The re-politicization of the military.
                              5. Creation of the new political economy.

                              Telecom Business:

Many details are noted and sourced. Prominent, is the Shin Company, which earned enormous profits and attained major growth after the passing of the Telecommunications Services Act. This Act restricted foreign ownership to 25% which aided Shin, while simultaneously squeezing Shin's competitors. In the Thai telecom business and South East Asia in general, there is a "love-hate" relationship with foreign capital. Wanting to curtail it, despising it, while at the same time critically dependent upon it. Playing it both ways, is an old and contemporary form of split personalities, and old style
                              politics.

I'm curious that this book origins of Shinawatra's rise to power in the telecom business didn't include his biggest move: Thanksin's joint venture with American William L. Monson in the 1980s. Thaksin violated the agreement, stole Monson's equipment, had police raid his office, and arrest his manager and staff and file criminal charges (which were later dropped because they were a farce). Another trial date is set for September of 2006 relating to this.

                              TRT Party:

The Thai Rak Thai political party founded by Shinawatra successfully used (and still uses) a mass marketing approach now utilized in Thailand and other nation-states of the world. The roots of this approach and these methods are traced to U.S. and UK.

TRT is very adept at organization and became the main political party by not only isolating the main opposition party (Democrats) but by also co-opting (absorbing) other MPs from the Democratic party and the other lessor parties (e.g. Chart Thai, Chart Pattana, etc.).

The Use Of Language And The Media (and the party platform):

Utilization of language and media was and is a critical arm of the "political platform." Three of the major points of the TRT platform were: 1) A moratorium on farmers' debts 2) A million Baht fund for every village and 3) 30 Baht Health Insurance plan.

The creation of the People's bank or "bank for the poor" offered
Business Development Loans allowed for low interest loans and
maximum 15,000 Baht borrowing limit. Solidifying this crucial base.

These were one of the many "actions" that Thaksin and his advisor Pansak partook to gain support. These actions were emphasized more than ideological "thinking."

                              2006 Tipping point:

The Tipping Point in 2006: the Shin stock sale to Temasek, via Ample Rich.

This dubious financial deal was the Tipping Point that led to his resignation in early April, of 2006. As a result of mass protests Thaksin dissolved Parliament and held a snap election because it was the most prudent political move he could make, and it was the best way save himself, as criminal charges were likely to be filed. The Shin deal was the breaking point. It highlighted the fact that many governmental policies gave special treatment and benefit to Shin since Shinawatra's ascension. A schism between the rural poor (primarily in the north) and residents of Bangkok over the "caretaker."

The "Thaksinization of Thailand" does a very good job in synopsizing the history of Thai politics up and through the rise of TRT and Thaskin up to 2005. A helpful book for those that want to know some of the basics of the Thai political system.

Although Thaksin is not officially at the helm, he's a force.
Hopefully those that succeed him can do what's best for the Thai
people and Thailand. Where is Thailand's economy headed with high consumer debts and competition from its neighbor to the east?

This is a great book that's a quick and has lots of current
                              information and a great bibliography.

Any true Seinfeld fan knows and appreciates the fact that George Costanza is based off Larry David, as it has been known from the start. The only thing Jerry used was his last name. Don't feel bad for this guy, hes getting money for a book which is phoney.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Sad Story.......2005-01-19

I read this book a few years back, but as a Seinfeld fan, its stayed with me.

Mike Costanza seems like an extremely thoughtful person, a nice New York guy. In his book he remembers how he first met Seinfeld when they were young, and it seems that he was really proud of his friendship.

But Seinfeld would ultimately prove to be a LOUSY FRIEND.

When a poor kid makes good, its nice to bring along friends for the ride. Seinfeld didn't. Worse still, he made it to the heights by taking advantage of Mike Costanza.

The hit TV Series Seinfeld, as we all know, had the character George Costanza. He was the total loser. And, he was based almost totally on Mike, Jerry's supposedly "best friend". As if that was bad enough, Seinfeld continued to take advantage of Mike. When Mike told him that he had gotten some work as a hand model, an episode of Seinfeld turned up with George doing the same thing. When Mike got a hair piece, so did George.

Now, if Jerry was sending cheques to Costanza every now and a then, maybe that would be OK. But he never did. Even when Mike did a cameo bit as a truck driver in one episode, Mike had to pay the airfare from NYC to LA.

SEINFELD SHOULD HAVE PAID HIM MILLIONS FOR THE INSPIRATION OF THE ROLE, AFTER ALL, SEINFELD WAS GETTING MILLIONS PER EPISODE!

Seinfeld is a user. He only met up with his former collegues recently for one reason: to promote the DVDs. Its no wonder that Seinfeld's mini doco on the creation of the show failed to mention how Mike Costanza was the inspiration for George.

Be warned: if you are one of those people that can't seperate characters from their life, then don't get this book. It might ruin the Seinfeld series for you FOREVER.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2002-11-23

If the price of this book doesn't seem so bad to you, give it a shot. You probably only heard about this book if you were a Seinfeld fan, anyway.

What's interesting about this book is to know that you are reading the very words that made the relationship between Jerry Seinfeld and this "real Costanza" go sour.

Costanza is an interesting and funny guy. This book seems honest-- he tells it like it is in a straightforward manner, and I feel as if I know Jerry a bit better after reading this--he DOES NOT play HIMSELF on his sitcom.

This book includes a few photos of Jerry goofing around straight out of Costanza's photo albulm--it's interesting to see how he acted around his friends. The single best scene in this book is the author's account of when Jerry FIRST took a shot at making people laugh for a few minutes, when he caught his friends off guard and did a few minutes of stand-up that he had spent quite a while preparing.

This book tracks Jerry's life and personality changes from when he was a class clown Joe Shmoe until he found himself in superstardom, making hundreds of times the money that his friends, like this author, make.

4 out of 5 stars A great book if you're interested in Jerry's life before TV.......1998-06-24

"The Real Seinfeld", as an attempt to cash in on the Seinfeld name is annoying but accepted, but as an attempt to further chronicle parts of Jerry's life before show business, it's one of the best sources available. Mike Costanza was a good friend of Jerry's when they were younger and, in addition to giving Jason Alexander's character his name, Jerry and Larry David have also imbued George with many characteristics and idiosynchracies from Mike's life. If you're interested in Jerry Seinfeld, this one is a must have.
