Nina Segal's update of the late Eric Kocher's work provides a helpful guide for international job-seekers. From a bewildering array of options, Segal breaks career paths down by sector (media, finance, government, international organizations, NGOs and non-profits, law firms) and provides advice on the type of experience and qualifications that can help you get a foot in the door at these complex employers.
This is not a book about finding work abroad! Nor does it try to be a comprehensive index of every employer with international operations or a foreign focus. Rather, it's a starting point for a career path with big employers such as the United Nations, the US State Department, the Associated Press, the World Bank, Citigroup, and Human Rights Watch. The book focuses on the information you'd need to find an entry-level to mid-level job at companies and organizations with strong international components to their work. This latest edition adds a host of web links facilitating further research.
Segal is a human resources consultant at the UN, and previously headed the career services office at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She has spent years studying and guiding successful international careers. "International Jobs" is a succinct distillation of what she's learned. While it could be improved, the book really is in a field of its own, and very useful for anyone seeking a path to a cosmopolitan career and life. "International Jobs" has helped me in my career, and I regularly refer to it when asked for career advice.

This book is awful. As said below, see the reviews of the 5. edition if you don't believe me. As an American who has permanently immigrated abroad and has had to work through the cultural hardships and bureaucracy in Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom I can say from personal experience that this book can at best be called naive. They take the typical N. American point of view that you can get on anywhere with english, they assume that the american resume will work in every country (it won't...in the UK the format is different (CV) and in other countries like Germany you have to write in a different format and in german), they give no information about how working in any of these countries is different both culturally and in respect to the working laws, and the jobs that they do list are low level jobs that no one would ever work in for more than a year (teach english abroad, volunteer work, etc.).
If you are looking for a job abroad, first off learn the language of the country you want to work in. Then go to or call the embassy and ask them about the working laws and what you have to do to get a visa. After that start sending out local formatted CVs to companies in the country, but under any circumstances do NOT buy this book.

Also, it is rather interesting that Nina Segal - according to the "editorial" review - never ever worked abroad. (That sounds a little bit like Condi and George W. telling the rest of the world how to fight terrorism and introduce democracy ...)
Nice Companion Book.......2003-11-21
This book is a nice companion to the more comprehensive "International Job Finder: Where the Jobs are Worldwide." While "International Job Finder" provides everything you could want to know about where to find jobs around the globe via the Internet and in print, the value of "International Jobs" rests in the in-depth information it provides about hundreds of international employers. "International Job Finder" is a lot more candid about how to stay safe overseas these days while "International Jobs" pretty much glosses over the risks in overseas work. But between them, the two books cover just about everything you need to know for a successful international job search.

As for this book, I'm not sure if it is real or evil, but I have it here.. It gives the addresses of several organizations and information pertaining to each..

This guide is for 6th graders and anyone over that age should skip this book. Ninety-Five of the guide outlines how to get into teaching English overseas or working (for free) for some no name nonprofit. It is amazing that the so called "experts" try to pass this book off as an "authoritative guide" or a "classic reference" for researching and launching an international career. Is low-paying English teaching or low-paying non-profit work now an international career? GET REAL - try to have a family and send your kids to college as an foreign English teacher or non-profit employee. Actually Americans are tutoring English (instead of being an English teacher in the school) because most countries offer English as a second language in the school and hire their nationals who majored in English to teach in the schools.
The sections on résumé writing, interviewing advice, web resources, market analysis, and "day-in-the-life" stories - are outdated, extremely UNREALISTIC, as well as FREE on the WEB. Actually there is must better advice and analysis on many career websites. My advice - save your money and skip this guide.
This Book is Pure EVIL.......2003-05-12
This book provides bad advice and recommendations regarding career planning. Part One of the book, which is titled
"Introduction to International Career Planning," answers questions about education and experience required for specific careers and jobs. If a young person believes even half of the info in this section they are doomed to depression and not "going after their dreams". MOST employers, both domestically and internationally, hire individuals who do NOT have the right education nor the right work experience. Most employers hire based upon personality, attitude, the ability to fit into corporate culture, and the ability to learn quickly. This applies to all levels - from entry jobs to CEO. If you read the business section of the newspaper or trade magazines, you will see tons of examples. It is SAD that this book is targeted to college students who are often naive about finding a job. This book serves to discourage more than help an individual see how their education and work experience can translate into an international career.
I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!.......2003-01-31
I found this book useless and too asinine. The book does not give the reader the facts and the dirt on jobs that involving living and working abroad. For example, no mention of advice for avoiding international job scams, adapting to the host nation's culture, and safeguarding against anti-American threats and opinions in the workplace. The book also focuses too heavily on jobs in Europe instead of international jobs on all seven continents. Also, the book seems to be geared towards first-time job hunters with such advice as doing internships abroad at the company that you would like to work. This almost always FAILS because it is too expensive and too controversal within that country to hire an American.
LIMITED AND TOO SIMPLE.......2002-12-10
I am currently looking for an overseas job right now, and Kocher & Segal's book has been NO help! I have wasted my time and money with this book. The information is too simplistic and the guide is not up-to-date. I graduated in May and I recommend the following books - "The Global Resume and CV Guide" by Mary Anne Thompson and "Careers in International Affairs" by Maria Pinto Carland.

I had been looking for a Simon and Garfunkel sheat music book, And this one is great. The only prblem I have with it is that it only has the melody, not both their parts.

When was the last time you took a stroll along the beach at dawn, while there were very few people around? The air is crisp; the clap of the water is magnified; the bits of shell prick your soles. You kneel down and cup some of the sand in your hand, remembering the times when you played on the beach as a child. There is a peaceful aura. The ocean water washes away your troubles as it slowly disintegrates your new sand castle. If you have never experienced this before, plan a morning trip to a nearby beach, and witness the calming effects.
"Redemption of the Shattered" describes how the author used the act of playing in the sand to heal the emotional scars from his teenage years. With the help of a Sandtray therapist, he reenacts significant scenes of his life, by choosing from hundreds of miniature figures. Each chapter has a narrative, a commentary and family discussion questions. The narrative or mini "play" describes the event from his viewpoint as a teenager. A commentary follows the narrative, which explains his feelings of the event in retrospect. Then there are family discussion questions, asking the reader how they would feel in similar scenarios.
Bob Livingstone shares the tough parts of his life with the world. It takes a strong person to open up, and say, "This happened to me, and here's how I received healing." He knows how life can be dangerously cyclical, especially within families. "Redemption of the Shattered" shows how Sandtray therapy helped to mend the cracks in his circle of life. This book should be recommended reading not only for emotionally wounded teenagers, but also for adults who need to heal the sands of time.

An Emotional Path Toward Healing.......2002-07-11
Redemption Of The Shattered by Bob Livingstone is an emotional self propelled path toward healing. I enjoyed it for many reasons. Mainly, I was releived by the ease at which I, a lay person, could read and comprehend the book. Sandtray therapy was a foreign topic to me, but after reading this book, I feel I understand it and its usefulness. Secondly, the format of the book, sandtray, analysis, family discussion and questions is well thought out and practical. It lends to a usefulness in my own life. Finally, Mr. Livingstone connects with the reader by sharing his own struggles and pain, his "Healing Journey" through his sandtray therpay sessions. In doing so, he is a testament to the effectiveness of a therapy process in which he so clearly believes. I would recommend this book to any teenager or adult struggling with emotional pain.
