2 out of 5 stars Limited value.......2005-10-26

I am an ESL teacher who bought this book for use in private lessons with a businessman who was in the USA temporarily. I was particularly attracted to the line on the front cover that says, "Enclosed cassettes let you hear business English as it is spoken in true-to-life situations." I consider that statement to be a flat-out lie. The cassette tapes have the most unnatural, scripted "conversations" that even my student recognized as being unnatural. As a way to be able to prepare oneself for business settings, the tapes are worth next to nothing.

I have given this book a generous rating of two stars because it does have some value for someone who can read well (the book has a lot of reading) and wants to familiarize themselves with some business terms in English, if all they've had is academic or regular classroom English.

This is designed as a self-learning book, so it doesn't work well in a tutoring or classroom situation. Unfortunately, business books that don't focus on business writing are scarce in ESL, so there isn't much to choose from, thus some English learners may find some value in this.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Speak Business English.......2003-11-14

I feel that this book is very well written, and covers the basic information that would be valuable to any non English speaking
person.

1 out of 5 stars We need books on CD.......2002-08-29

We need this kind of stuff on CD and easy to use, for example: like American Accent Training. with track number in each CD we can do each exercise, again and again.

1 out of 5 stars A Difficult Way to Learn Business English.......2001-11-28

On the positive side, "Let's Speak Business English" is a concise phrasebook for the business English student. However, the language is often unnatural and the exercises provide very little practice for effectively learning the expressions.

5 out of 5 stars the best bool for non-native learners.......2000-04-05

if you wanna learn some situations about the english language, this is the best book. It has a lot of cases where you get it help. You can solve your doubts reading this great book.

        Book Description

My Generation offers exceptionally perceptive readings of autobiographical works by veterans of the 1960s culture wars, from the annunciatory narrative of the Port Huron Statement to the self-consciously elegiac reflections of such Movement veterans as Tom Hayden and Todd Gitlin. In the process, John Hazlett convincingly argues that these works constitute a new autobiographical genre intent upon illuminating the collective experience of an entire generation. My Generation deepens our understanding of the sixties and its long aftermath.Paul Boyer, Merle Curti Professor of History, University of WisconsinMadison John Hazletts engaging and insightful study of writers from the 1960s demonstrates for the first time the ways in which the idea of the generation has affected autobiographical writing in this century. Exchanging I for we, autobiographers from the sixties claim to speak on behalf of all members of their generation. However, the extent to which each perspective accurately represents that generations beliefs, values, and goals will continually be contested by competing texts and narratives. Writers whose work is addressed in My Generation include Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Michael Rossman, Dotson Rader, Raymond Mungo, Jane Alpert, John Bunzel, Peter Collier, David Horowitz, Joyce Maynard, David Harris, and Todd Gitlin. As Hazlett discovered, the stories these writers present are not simply straightforward accounts; instead, each is constructed with a specific political and personal agenda in an effort to define the generations identity and the writers own.

4 out of 5 stars Just wish it had the whole songs.......2005-08-08

This is a great product; you'd think it was an obvious thing and that others would have done it but here it is: Susan's comments and advice, and then the songs/exercises, are a clear and healthy drill for singers of most levels. Whether you are out of practice or just looking for something fresh, you will probably enjoy these exercises. Do take advantage of the song lists in the various amazon reviews and pick which version is best for you.

I can feel the tension relief in my throat already, just from one day's practice.

              5 out of 5 stars it's fun, it's clear, and it works!.......1999-11-19

I loved singing with this workout! The song selection is wonderful and the instructions are easy to follow. It's great to sing with a whole band, instead of just a piano playing scales. Susan gives just enough guidance on the CD so I didn't get bogged down. Her book is very clear. I've read voice instruction books that told me way more than I needed to know. The info here is straightforward and made a lot of sense. She has expansion info on how to stylize that's beyond me right now, but it's nice that there's room to grow built into the songs. So much better than singing with a kareoke CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Leaning Music Theory.......2007-08-12

I don't understand why some reviewers are "shocked" that this is vocal music theory training, not "how to sing" lessons. It delivers exactly what it says it does, and I'm learning alot.

5 out of 5 stars Step by Step Harmony..........2005-08-23

Easy, interesting stepwise approach to learning harmony, great for my students and even for some of their parents. A tin ear will become more sensitive to pitch. Very useful product!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Harmony with Musicianship.......2002-11-18

Thanks to Austin & Howard, we finally have a practical training program in Vocal Musicianship. Scales, intervals, chords, rhythm & meter are the building blocks of music. ABCs of Vocal Harmony gears to the human voice and helps you play your vocal instrument with greater skill while learning the language of music. A member of my choir found it at Amazon.com and now I have everyone using it. My choir has never sounded better. Be sure to get the CD version for maximum effect in accessing any subject or exercises at the tuch of a button.

5 out of 5 stars ABCs of Vocal Harmony - Finally! - Thank you!.......2002-11-18

"Your Vocal Harmony Course is great! It's fun and encouraging too. For the first time we have something other than just a book for the kids. Having both male and female voice to listen to and match makes all the difference ... and filling in the missing notes of intervals and chords and getting immediate feedback is just what we need. Thanks." Jayne Campbell - Westlake - Harvard School

3 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Unless You Want to Learn Theory.......2001-10-30

Like the last reviewer I was very disappointed by this set. Mainly because I thought this set would teach vocal techniques. This set teaches theory based information like intervals, scales, octaves, rhythms, notes, etc. Howard and Austin take you step by step vocally thorough all the theory based info on the 4 discs. Still despite my own disappointed with this set I would recommend it to anyone who desire to know theory or may be short of knowledge on music theory. However I wouldn't reccommend this to anyone who just wants to learn vocal improvement techniques or general vocal techiques.

5 out of 5 stars This Method Works For Me.......2000-06-15

My girlfriend has the alto edition of this--it sounded good but the keys were all wrong for me. This one fits my voice, and the information is good: not overly detailed information, but very straightforward and clear. I sing through about a half of the CD before I go to band practise and it works, my voice is warmed up for singing and I don't strain. From the book I've learned a lot more about how my voice operates. Thumbs up from me.

              5 out of 5 stars A great sequel.......2006-01-10

I'd already worked with Volume One of this method so I knew it worked-I liked the first one and it helped my singing but I like this set of songs more. The book that comes with it isn't just a repeat of the first book, it actually has some new information. Both the CDs and the book are very well thought out and clear.

5 out of 5 stars Great method, great songs!.......2005-09-26

This is such a wonderful alternative to singing boring old scales and other voice exercises, I find I'm singing much more because I really like almost all of these songs and can already see improvement. Susan's information is clear and concise, and I've learned more about how my voice works than with any other singing method I've tried. Very highly recommended.

Long after you'e completed this study, the verses you've studied will be etched on your heart through the gift of music. Some of our loveliest praise choruses are psalms set to music. The enclosed compact disc from Integrity Music contains passages you will soon be singing, containing verses such as:

Under the shadow of Your wings, I have found a hiding place. I rise before the dawning of the morning, and cry for help—I hope in Your Word. My Comfort, my Shelter, Lord there is none like You.

How exciting to not only have an in-depth study of some of our most beautiful psalms, but to also be able to hear the psalms, as they were meant to be heard, set to music. This guide is one of a series, written by Dee, especially with the interest of women in mind. Women love the psalms for their poetry, their emotion, and their intimacy with God. If you want to fall deeply in love with the Lord, as David did, study the psalms!

5 out of 5 stars Love Willie Morris.......2007-05-12

Anyone who grew up in a small town in the 40's and 50's will enjoy this book, especially if that small town was in the South. Willie Morris was a brilliant wordsmith. I have read several of his books and this one may be my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Yazoo City Native.......2006-10-20

I am from Yazoo City so this book has always been one of my favorites. I saw Willie Morris at a car wash in Jackson, MS not long before his death. I was shy and didn't want to bother him, so I didn't introduce myself and have a chat. I would have loved to have spoken with him. Now I regret my shyness - should've taken the chance. Yazoo City has an enduring quality and charm that shows in all his books and stories. No matter where I live, it will always be home. There is a great feeling of safety and warmth whenever I drive into the city limits. It is a feeling of home. Not many people have that sense of home these days. I feel blessed to have grown up there.

                        3 out of 5 stars In perspective.......2004-11-09

I was born 2 years after Mr. Morris. My childhood was not at all like Mr. Morris'. I recognized some of the events of the times, but the adventures he told of going through came across to me as gross exaggerations; just think of the 8 foot+ tall Indians he mentions. And the story about the race - very, very unlikely. His tales remind me somewhat of the character in the movie "Bigfish". Even thinking about Tom Sawyer, the incidents in there were not as outlandish as those in "Good Old Boy". To me this book was entertaining and well-written, but not really enlightening regarding growing up in the 40's. I watched baseball in those days, I went into a haunted house, I had my run-ins with a teacher's pet, etc. but I enjoyed Salinger's writing about this stuff much more.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball, Football and the Yazoo City Witch.......2002-06-15

This was a great memoir about a "typical" southern boy's childhood. I wish Willie Morris had not died so young because I found his work so enjoyable, and it would have been wonderful to read even more of his writing.

I would not put Mr. Morris up on the same level as Mark Twain (and he probably would not want it either), but this book reminds me in a lot of ways of Tom Sawyer--a young boy's life on the Mississippi Delta. Everyone should experience these memories, whether in real time or vicariously.

He tells of his childhood in Yazoo City, Mississippi, with all his childhood friends, including Spit McGee (the forty's Huckleberry Finn). He recalls their baseball games, football games, hunting on the Delta with his father, practical jokes played on anyone and everyone. He recounts the story of the Witch of Yazoo and the broken chain. One of the best and most humorous of his stories is the tale of the haunted house and what the boys found in it one dark and stormy night.

I best remember in this book the chapters of a typical day in the life of a boy his age in Yazoo City--a day in the summer and a day in the fall. These are great vignettes and very poignant pulling in the reader to want to recall his or her own childhood memories.

This is a great memoir and can be enjoyed by all.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I have Ever Read.......2000-04-12
