My comments on this pocket guide are the same as those on the other two created by Rath & Strong, except that this pocket guide is probably the one to purchase in bulk quantity so that copies can be distrbuted among everyone directly involved with process improvement initiatives. Thus far, a substantial majority of Six Six programs either failed or fell far short of expectations. Why? Lots of reasons but one of the major ones is dysfunctional teamwork. Hence the special importance of this pocket guide.

Although Rath and Strong do indeed provide a wealth of information about Six Sigma, their "pocket guide" can be of substantial value to all organizations (regardless of size or nature) which need to simplify, thereby improve the process by which they produce whatever they offer for sale. Products, of course, but also professional services (e.g. legal, accounting, management consulting), memberships (e.g. healthcare providers as well as trade and professional associations such as chambers of commerce), and charitable support (e.g. non profit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 organizations such as college and universities). Chapter One introduces the book's core concept, DMAIC, an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. A chapter is then devoted to each of the five separate but related process components. Rath and Strong explain how this process will guide and inform efforts to increase the ROI of resources to achieve whatever the desired objectives may be. One of this guide's greatest benefits is its ease of use: It can easily be carried within an attaché case, coat pocket, or purse, always available for direct and immediate access whenever needed. Now more than ever before, decision-makers are under great pressure to produce more and better results in less time, and with fewer resources. Hence the importance of improving first pass yield and cycle time, for example. Hence the importance, also, of enabling everyone within a given organization to understand how and why her or his efforts can -- and should -- contribute to the organization's operational excellence. Field Tested.......2000-11-21

You've just got on the plane to head home after you and your team "nailed" the negotiation, and secured the rest of the project ... as defined so far. Following the cocktails, and the attempt to fall asleep, you start to feel that achievers anxiety .... Do I really have control, or was it just luck? What about the projects which have been coasting whilst working this one into a product?

The Manager's Pocket Guide to Project Management is a good tool to leverage any project manager regardless of expertise, experience, or industry. For the experienced manager, the interpretation of all the juggled targets is like a star pitcher keeping track of the runners on base in the context of the inning, and the game. The tools are clearly there, but the good habits found in the pocket guide can help him/er stay out of trouble. For the novice, this guide acts as a target tracking system like the range-finder in a periscope, the view may be great, but knowing what that view represents is the key to keeping one's head.

Either stand-alone, or as a follow-up to the Project Manager's Partner (and its associated course), any project manager should keep this book in their briefcase for routine reference.

Assault on Rural Poverty analyzes the causes of rural poverty and constraints impeding increased agricultural productivity during the last four decades in Ethiopia -- under three different regimes. It discusses the lessons drawn from the experience in Ethiopia and other poor countries. These provide the basis for recommending a small farmer-led development strategy to alleviate rural poverty in Ethiopia. The keys for successful economic growth are perceived as the provision of institutional savings and credit to small-scale farmers and small business owners, the deep involvement of the local community in project planning, implementation, evaluation and sharing of benefits, and the use of development support communication for motivation, information dissemination, and training. Ethnic politics is seen to be destructive of Ethiopian society and a deterrent to sustainable development. Therefore ethnic politics must be replaced by a genuinely democratic and widely acceptable system of governance.

I found the book to be very informative and uself. I really enjoyed the fact that the writer clearly spelled out the floss and weakness of each government. He also talks about solutions that are very applicable and needed to fight poverty in the 21st century

Ken Graun has struck a perfect balance of crispness and completeness with his presentation of celestial facts in "What's Out Tonight?". This book is great for those of us (like me) who love astronomy but don't have the time to observe every night (or even every month). It provides a 50 year guide to the moon phases and best planet observing periods (and much more) so you can either plan your outdoor observing well in advance, or quickly create a plan for tonight's sky. This guide recommends (and helps locate) deep space objects of interest throughout the year. I found the readability and layout of the book's tables and figures perfect for teaching both the Boy Scout Astronomy and Space Exploration merit badges. For any Hollywood Lover, a wonderful pictorial story!.......2005-04-10

This is a splendid book filled with hundreds of pictures of the rich and the famous and laden with Hollywood lore, be it Gable and Lombard or Hearst and Marian Davies -- the author of the book, Margaret Burk, knew most of them, as she was the wonderful public relations chief of both the Ambassador Hotel and Coconut Grove for many many years and she has written this star-studded memoir with wonderful anecdotes. The oversuzed book has a unique gold cover, and contains replicas of autographs (many owned by Ms. Burk, who now runs the prestigious ROUND TABLE book club in California) within the cover. This is a book for anyone who loves the movies! I was privileged to meet Margaret, when she invited me to introduce my own new book, "Someone To Watch Over Me," at the Round Table in La Quinta, Ca. in Jan. She's a terrific lady! Judi McMahon

Up among the stars.......2002-06-06

Congratulations, I have just read Margaret Burk's wonderful book about the Ambassador Hotel. I am a documentary filmmaker doing research on the hotel for a soon to be produced film and found the book to contain a wealth of information. Starting from the opening date of the hotel until its unofficial closing. Each outstanding chapter is filled with Hollywood memorabilia such as: "Gloria Swanson:Birthday Girl," "The War Years," "The Cocoanut Grove," the Meca showcase for the most important performers of the time, "Death of a Hero," one of the most complete accounts of the tragic assasination of Robert Kennedy at the Ambassador, and many more. The pictures in the book feature some of Hollywood's greatest icons who passed through the doors of the famous land mark.
The end pages of the book features the autographs of some of the most renowned performers, Heads of State, and personalities of the era. I recently met the author at a ROUND TABLE WEST book club luncheon, the largest book club of its kind in America that features best selling authors, which she founded along with famed author Adela Rogers St. Johns at the Ambassador Hotel
over twenty-five years ago.
I was happy to learn that Margaret Burk is still living amongst the stars.

The threatened Ambassador Hotel's Memoirs.......2001-06-19

This book informed me of the incredible history that took place in the famous Ambassador Hotel of Los Angeles-Not just "Hollywood" history ala Cocoanut Grove but Robert Kennedy, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, F Scott Fitzgerald the list goes on...This book is filled with photos and in really a fun format also and has tons of stories that were obviously close to the authors heart. I hope others that read this book or have the urge to learn more of the Ambassadors history will join as I have the fight to save this historic building (that does not have landmark status) from the wrecking ball and the doom that presently faces this grand piece of our national history. I hope this book is part one of the Ambassador's long life in the heart of Los Angeles and that it is just taking a well deserved rest before it needed facelift and comeback hey where else but in L.A.? With your help maybe we can save history. Get involved.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Amazon.com for finding me this incredible piece of Los Angeles/Hollywood history. In it's salad years, the Ambassador Hotel was an incredible piece of architechure and it is really a shame what they (being the powers-that-be) have allowed to happen to the Wilshire Blvd. hotspot. We filmed a movie in the decaying building a little over a year ago (as so many others have done - "Pretty Woman" was filmed there you know) and I was still awe-struck to think of how many Hollywood and Political luminaries had been on the same carpeting that I was standing on. Thank you Amazon.com, for allowing me to hold on to a piece of the past by locating this photo-drenched book for me.
