ok for a broad list.......2003-07-24
This book does have a rather thorough list of companies and organizations in the DC metro area. But, I also must concur with the above review to some extent. Most of the listing don't have any descriptions and *really* need them. And, the groupings are of limited help, for ex. Airbus and the International Food Policy Research Instit. are both listed under "International". Its best just for flipping through and hoping to get some names and urls for places that you might have overlooked.
Great Job Seeking Tool.......2002-04-06
This is a great directory for anyone interested in researching the companies they are seeking employment with. It lists not only the contact name(s), but it has website addresses so that you can research the company before you apply. It's broken down by industry which makes it easy to find the businesses you are interested in. It's user-friendly and very well organized.
Better off using a phonebook.......2002-03-10
I was very disppointed with this book. I have a hard time imagining this would be of use to anyone. There is scant information and the few listings they have are poorly orgainized. For example: interior design, graphic design, architecture and civil engineering firms are all gathered together under the heading 'Design & Enginnering'. The listings are then arranged alphabetically and no description of the firm is offered. Unless the company conveniently has 'architecture' in its name, you'll have no idea if you're sending a cover letter to an architecture firm or a graphic design studio. These disciplines are far too different to be lumped together! I found more listings in my field (and with more information) by opening up the yellow pages.

Thorough information on all aspects of the DC job market........1997-09-19
I have lived in the Washington area for many years and unfortunately lived through many job searches. This is more than a book -- it is a thorough compilation, up-to-date resource, and insightful guide to virtually everything about the Washington job market. In size as well as content, it is far beyond any of the other books on D.C. jobs out today. It helped me land my current job and I will most certainly turn to it when and if I ever need to look for another

Book Description
As industrialization transformed American life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, increasing numbers of women sought employment outside the home and many were drawn into the labor movement. This collection of twenty-five stories published in union journals offers a portrait both of women's experiences as wage-earners and of the conflicts, values, and aspirations that touched their lives in this period of massive social upheaval. Written by reformers, union officials, and popular fiction writers, the stories present an uneasy synthesis of labor movement virtues with domestic ideals of femininity, females assertiveness with female subordination, and moralizing with romantic fantasy.

Book Description
This report presents the demographics of who buys household furnishings, supplies, and services. Based on unpublished data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey, the report examines how much Americans spend on household furnishings, services, and supplies by the demographics that count—age, high-income households, income, household type, region of residence, race and Hispanic origin, and education. To round out the spending picture, it also presents “who-are-the-best-customers” analyses of the data, showing the demographics of spending at a glance. The items examined in this report fall within the categories of furniture, floor coverings, household textiles, appliances, and miscellaneous household equipment such as lamps. The report also includes household services (day care, housekeeping, gardening, etc.) and household supplies (laundry and cleaning supplies, postage, stationery and gift wrap, etc.).
Product Description
Fatty Arbuckles career came to a sudden halt amidst allegations that he raped and caused the death of a young starlet named Virginia Rappe. Though he was acquitted, the comedian, who was at one time second in popularity only to Charlie Chaplin, was ruined. Interviews with many of Arbuckles contemporaries (including Minta Durfee, his first wife) and extensive research inform this serious study of the once-fabled comedian. His early days in the Keystone comedies and his relationship with Chaplin are recounted. The details of the Rappe trial and his life afterwards are also provided.

Better than some..........2007-01-25
I had high hopes for this book- particularly given the $30 price tag. Don't get me wrong, I am more than willing to pay more for a good product. Unfortunately, there are several "little" problems that add up to a less than stellar experience. The first thing that struck me when I received the book was how thin it was. Now at 255 pages, it's not exactly a pamphlet but most of the other biographies that I own for silent film stars are more substantial. My real issues started within the first few pages. The text states that Arbuckle made 3 sound shorts in 1933 as part of an attempt at a comeback. Not true. Arbuckle made a total of 6 shorts in 1932-1933. The short that the text says was the first short made was in fact the LAST one made. Elsewhere, the text states that Buster Keaton gave up $250/wk on a show in exchange for $40/wk to work with Arbuckle and he considered the pay cut a small price to pay for his apprenticeship with Arbuckle. Keaton, if fact never bothered to ask initially how much he would make working with Arbuckle. There are other minor examples I could site. This may seem nitpicky of me but if these basic facts are incorrect and/or misleading, I am left to wonder what else in incorrect or misleading. There are also several typos throughout the book- not a big deal but one more minor thing that detracts from the work. I also noticed that on several occasions an incident that is sited in one chapter is sited again in the following chapter without adding anything to the retelling; it gives the impression of a school child told to write a 1000 word essay and repeats himself to reach the word requirement.
On the bright side, I have this to say about the book: It is certainly better that the Stahl book out there that, though a self proclaimed fictional work, many take to be more biographical than they should. Oderman's book is a balanced, non-sensationalized account of Arbuckle's life. Also I was pleased to see excerpts of interviews with Minta Durfee(Arbuckle's first wife). It was informative to read her take of events in her own words. Much of this material I have not seen elsewhere. In the end I enjoyed reading the book very much but I am left wondering how much of the material is accurate.
So Far So Good.......2006-08-30
I am About halfway through this book but it is well written , informative and definitely holds your attention. I decided to get this book after reading Jerry Stahl's novel" I ,Fatty" so I could get more factual info on Roscoe Arbuclkle and this book delivers!!!
Arbuckle's life included more than a terrible scandal, and this book confirms that.......2006-07-14
Even today, 85 years after the incident, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle is better known as the very first victim of a Hollywood scandal rather than the master comedian he actually was. If you ask a stranger on the street who Fatty Arbuckle was, you will either get the answer "Oh yes, that's the fat comedian who raped and killed a young girl, isn't it?" or, if you are more lucky, "Who is that?"
This is a tragedy. The fact that Arbuckle's fans abandoned him back in the early 1920's is awful enough in itself (he WAS completely innocent in the death of the young actress), but what's even worse is that he still is compared to scandals of today, involving stars like Michael Jackson, etc.
But there is hope -- Arbuckle's talent has recently been celebrated in a wonderful DVD box including more than thirty of his short films, and a three-hour long documentary is on the way.
This book, ROSCOE "FATTY" ARBUCKLE A BIOGRAPHY OF THE SILENT FILM COMEDIAN by Stuart Oderman, which was first published in 1994 and reprinted last year, is another triumph. It includes details about Arbuckle's childhood which was very sad --his mother died when he was five, his alcoholic father abandoned him when he was twelve, and, mainly because of his heavy weight, he had no friends-- and about his early stage career. The book is not only about Arbuckle -- it is about the whole era. You get the feeling that you actually is around Arbuckle all the time while you are reading. The scandal is described to last detail, but what's also described to last detail is Arbuckle's 23 year long movie career, from his first few one-reelers at Selig to his six Warner Brothers talkie shorts.
Arbuckle's relationship with women is also an important part of the story. Roscoe is known to have been very shy towards women (despite the fact that he actually was married three times), and Oderman explains, with deep understanding, Arbuckle's fear of women, why he could not (or at least very rarely) feel comfortable with their company. What's also very interesting to read about is the relationship between Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand (you've probably heard that they had an innocent, sweet romance which lasted some years before it gradually dissolved...well, that's not the cause!) and Buster Keaton's early movie career.
Oderman used years to interview several people who knew Arbuckle, among them Minta Durfee, who was Arbuckle's first wife and who played his leading lady in several of his early Keystone-films.
Instead of reading the new I, FATTY-novel by Jerry Stahl, which widely has got pretty good reviews, I recommend Stuart Oderman's biography. This is the true story of a master comedian and kind man -- and, although this is not a novel, you easily get the feeling that it is while you are reading.
It has a few weaknesses; at times, I think Oderman focuses a little too much on Arbuckle's bad sides. However, Roscoe was also a human being and none of us are saints. Oderman tells a lot about how generous Roscoe could be at times, too. The book also has some factual errors -- for example, it's stated here that Arbuckle appeared in three Warner Brothers shorts in the early 1930's; the correct number is six.
Anyway, all in all these flaws are quite minor, and ROSCOE "FATTY" ARBUCKLE: A BIOGRAPHY OF THE SILENT FILM COMEDIAN is highly recommended from me to anyone who appreciate the comedies of the charming comedian, and to you who simply want to know the true story behind him.
Beyond the Scandal.......2006-02-23
If you want to know more about Roscoe than just the infamous scandal you should read this book. Roscoe had a very sad childhood and as a result he was not the "Clown Prince" off camera at all times. A very complex man, Roscoe was generous to his friends to a fault, he and Buster Keaton were well known pratical jokers and these stories are told. This book also talks about the health, alcohol and drug problems that plagued Roscoe. We have much to thank Roscoe for, not only was he a great comedic talent, he was at one time mentor to Buster Keaton. You have to keep reminding yourself that this is written with Minta Durfee's assistance and so it tends to skip through Roscoe's live after Minta.
Mr Oderman is a great teacher.......2001-11-07
My wife and I both had Mr Oderman as an english teacher at barringer high school. we have both read this book and it introduced me to a whole new world of comics. It even made me a fatty Arbuckle fan. E.R.Smith & Saaberah Smith
Book Description
Eleven-year-old Erin Myrren's life was transformed on the night she was sexually abused by her cousin, someone she loved and trusted. As the abuse continued, and as she was forced to see her abuser over and over again in social situations, she struggled with self-doubt, panic attacks, nightmares and the weight of whether or not to tell her terrible secret. It wasn't until a traumatic series of events showed her the cost of silence that she chose to speak out-in the process destroying both her family and the last of her innocence. Through her personal diary, written during the years of her abuse, Erin Myrren shares her journey through pain and confusion to inner strength and, ultimately, forgiveness. Raw, powerful and unflinchingly honest, Stolen Innocence is the inspiring story of one girl's struggle to become a woman, and a bright light on the pain and devastation of abuse. Stolen Innocence is written with conviction and clarity. [Erin Myrren] doesn't hold back, and I respect her honesty and openness...By the end of the book, I thought I was reading passages from a much older adult than a high school senior. Erin has grown into a strong, wise, intelligent, perceptive, spiritual, caring adult." --Susan Reedquist, The Children's Advocacy Center
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Memoir.......2006-08-07
A riveting and very sober account of the harrowing experience of child abuse as told by the victim. In the end this memoir ia an uplifting account of how perseverance overcame the fear of telling the truth. An amazing book.
Tells The Story Of Many.......2006-02-07
Giving voice to unspeakable abuse is what prevents it from propagating. Only when it remains in the dark is its sinister purpose accomplished. This young woman was able to finally put aside her own fears and come out of the shadows to illuminate the disconsolate corners of her life that had been concealed from her parents and even her own sister.
I read the book cover to cover in one sitting and had to choke back tears of recognition in several places. The book resonated deeply within me as we had a somewhat similar situation in our own family. Often, the revelation is as traumatic as the original abuse with the survivor suffering much more than the perpetrator even in the punishment phase.
Nonetheless, Erin has sparked a flame that now needs to be passed among survivors and their supporters to shed light on a subject that is too often veiled by silence.
Together we can bring light to the suffering. As survivors we need to continue to speak out, to support one another, and educate the public to prevent the growing scourge of sexual assault and child molestation. Thank you Erin for lighting the candle.
Stolen Innocence: A Must Read.......2005-09-27
I found Erin Merryn's book by chance in the bookstore. I'm glad I did. I started reading the book and finished it in one night. Erin tells her story by using diary entries that she made at the time the abuse was taking place. She doesn't hold back. The result is a book that gives the reader the true horror of sexual abuse and its devastating effects on young girls. Stolen Innocence is a book that will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned. The story is heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time. What I liked about the book was how Erin educates the reader on the harsh realities of sexual abuse in this society by citing statistics. From there, she takes the reader on the horrifying journey of living with sexual abuse day in, day out. You feel the fear and pain with every word she writes. Sexual abuse is a topic that many tend to "push under the carpet." I applaud Erin for the courage she displays, for her ability to convey her story, and for being a survivor of sexual abuse. The communication between Erin and her abuser is a great addition to the book. Erin allows the reader to witness her raw emotions as she confronts her abuser in a series of emails. This book would be helpful to survivors of sexual abuse and to those who desire to help a loved one who has been abused. A great read!
A CHANGED LIFE!!.......2005-07-09
Anyone that has ever lived through the horrifying experience of being raped, just as I have, needs to read this enlightening and healing memoir of hope. Erin Merryn unashamedly bares all in her narrative, recounting the mental, emotional, physical and sexual abuse that she so courageously overcame by breaking the silence of this most heinous of violations. From writing this book, she has given voice to those of us who were afraid to venture out with our own stories due to the stigma and the shame associated with this crime. This book overcame for me what years of counseling could not do. By her candor and her kind and gentle spirit you will be guided to a new self-awareness. You will most definitely come away from reading "Stolen Innocence" a much stronger, more assertive and hope-filled person. No longer will you consider yourself a victim, but rather, a Survivor!!
A MUST READ!!!!.......2005-06-11
I read this book in a different situation than most...I read it knowing the author!!! Having grown up with her and her family, and being very close with them, while reading the book I knew exactly what/who/where she was talking about throughout the whole thing. This is a wonderful and amazing book that everyone should read! The facts in this book are sad but true details that everyone should look for...this sort of abuse is nothing to be in denial about when it comes to your family/friends or whoever else. It can be dealt with...as Erin proves in her book because of her strength. Erin, the author, of this incredible book is a truly magnificent, beautiful and intelligent young woman that is going to go so far in life...because she held her head high and shared her story only to help other young women across the country have the same power to come forward about this horrible action that takes place so often! AWESOME!!!

Customer Reviews:
It was like reading my own story...............2005-07-18
Erin's book helped me in ways that I cannot even begin to explain. She told her story in an open, honest way, not holding anything back. I too was sexually abused by a family member, and being able to relate to her story has helped me more than years of therapy has. Being sexually abused has made me feel removed from the world, and that I will never be able to truly relate to another person. I believe this is because my family has turned against me and my friends, although supportive, do not understand what I am going through.
I have read many books on the subject of sexual abuse, but they were all very clinical, writting about the facts and effects more than the actual expierence. That is because those books are written by experts on the field, not survivors themselves. Although they did help me understand why I am suffering the effects now, years later, they did not make me feel any less alienated and alone. Anyone who has been abused, or know someone who has should read this book. Erin is an amazing author who is going to change many people's lives.

RAPE SURVIVOR WITH CHANGED LIFE!!!.......2005-07-11
The first I ever heard of Erin Merryn was back in June 2005 when I came across this riveting treatise and gut-wrenching narrative of one of life's most devatating of experiences. What I read penetrated deep within my soul and I cried from cover to cover. What she recounts are the very same emotions that I dealt with having been a victim of male/male rape back in my teens as well. Like Erin, I too struggled with the constant fear of wondering when this viscious depravment, this heinous violation of my body, my emotions, and of my mind was going to be perpetrated against me yet again. It is a living hell, especially when the perpetrator threatens physical harm or violence forcing his victim to capitulate. I suppressed my overwhelming shame and guilt for the better part of four decades and it wasn't until I read Erin's book that I gained adequate strength to face down the adverse aftereffects. She also taught me that if thorough and complete healing were to come about, then it had to be my decision. I had had enough of the diminished self-worth, the self-doubt, the panic attacks, the night terrors, the nightmares, the flashbacks, and yes, decades of the resultant self-injury. Erin's determination to come out of hiding gave me the courage to come out completely to my friends and family alike. This has proven to be a very liberating and freeing experience and it was then that I knew that my recovery from this nightmare and my self-injury was secure. And yes, like Erin, I too ran into some denial from those around me, but likewise I refused to recant and cower at their intimidations. To date I have read this truly helpful book no less than four times and am into it yet again!! Of all of the rape books that I have read this past year, Erin's has been the most helpful. She has given me hope beyond words and I know that she will do likewise with whoever thirsts for freedom from this brutal and unbelievably violating attack. By her candor and her faith she also has guided me back to a very close relationship with my Creator. Like Erin, I am now peace-filled and I too have made it my life's goal to reach out to other crushed souls that have been devastated by this horrible bodily and emotional offense. Thank you very much Erin. Together, one by one, we will change the world!!

Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2003-09-22
This book is definitely a must read. I could not put this one down. The author makes you feel you are there with her. You can actually feel the pain she experienced. I cried at times and laughed at others. An excellent choice.
