A Trip down the Vanished Colorado.......2000-11-28
Frederick Dellaenbaugh was a young man when John Wesley Powell tapped him to participate in Powell's second trip down the Colorado River. Powell had made the journey already a few years before, so the second voyage was less pure exploration and more science; the crew included Almon Harris Thompson (called affectionately "Prof." throughout), a professional geographer who also happened to be Powell's brother-in-law. With several boats and men of widely varying experience, the expedition sailed the Green river (thought at that time to be the upper Colorado) to its junction with the Colorado, and the Colorado itself as far as the middle of the Grand Canyon. Swirling rapids, maggotty food, blistering heat, sudden blizzards beset the adventurers, who still though it all made their geographical, geological, and ethnographical observations which resulted in (among other things) the first maps of the four corners region and the Grand Canyon (reproduced in the book).
While wild adventure, humor, and a real sense of the Old West permeate the book, there is a certain sadness, too. The Native Americans whom Dellenbaugh encounters are people clearly already defeated -- fearful, distrusting, sad. We catch glimpses of the Navaho trying to accommodate themselves to the new reality of white (especially Mormon) settlement, creating new networks of trade focused on growing frontier towns. But the seeds of the end are planted already in the irrigated fields of the Mormon settlers, and sometimes it seems as if the natives knew this too. Also, the topography through which the explorers travelled has now partly vanished behind the dams that have ruined Glen Canyon and other stretches of white water and canyon scenery. No one can now do what Dellenbaugh and his companions did; the sense of loss hovers unintentionally about every page.
Dellenbaugh was a keen observer (though perhaps a bit naive) with a talent for making even the monotony of running rapid after rapid spellbinding. One does feel that he may have veiled some of the conflicts that must have arisen in two (non-continuous) years of isolation, though if so this trait is refreshing in a world where we now expect everyone to tattle on everyone else. Every now and then just a shimmer of impatience with one of the crew seeps through. But the real hero who emerges from this book, somewhat surprisingly, is not the leader Powell -- the young Dellenbaugh seems never to have gotten close to him -- but rather the Prof., who rises to every challenge with decency and humaneness, and of whom Dellenbaugh seems to have been genuinely, and for good reason, in awe. Like Powell he is buried in Arlington Cemetery. He deserved that honor, but where he lives is in the pages of this book.
SPELL BINDING ADVENTURE OF THE LAST FRONTIER ON THE COLORADO.......1998-11-23
Love and respect for the Green and Colorado Rivers is greatly enhanced by Dellenbaugh's narritive of the 2nd Powell expadition. Well written, accurate history, and spell binding from start to finish. An adventure that can only be partially accomplished today is TOTALLY available in "A Canyon Voyage!"
Rivals Ambose's book on Lewis & Clark.......1998-11-11
At the time of the 2nd voyage down the Colorado, Dellenbaugh was on about 19 years old. He didn't write the book until many years later. What a wonderful/spellbinding look at the most beautiful place in North America (The Colorado Plateau). Not only that but I found it extremely hunorous as well. Great Great book!!!
Excellent Documentary........1998-10-01
This is an exceptionally well written account of a wonderful adventure through the canyons of the Colorado River. For anyone who loves the West's wildness, and writing most sensitive and humorous, this is a "must read". This book is illustrated with many fine original photographs and etchings.
Book Description
in half an hour a great wave several feet in height, could be distinctly seen flashing and sparkling in the moonlight, extending from one bank to the other and advancing swiftly upon us. While it was only a few hundred yards distant, the ebb tide continued to flow by at the rate of three miles an hour. A point of land and an exposed bar close under our lee broke the wave into several long swells, and as these met the ebb the broad sheet around us boiled up and foamed like the surface of a cauldron, and then, with scarcely a moment of slack water, the whole went whirling by in the opposite direction. In a few moments the low rollers had passed the islands and united again in a single bank of water, which swept up the narrowing channel with the thunder of a cataract.

Manetti truly is an entertainer!.......2006-08-13
Anyone who doesn't find Larry Manetti's "Aloha Magnum" entertaining isn't a Magnum P.I. fan, and definitely isn't a Larry Manetti fan, that, or you just don't have a pulse. Larry Manetti is a great entertainer and the stories he shares in his book only reemphasize his great humor and character. His sarcastic and occasionally abrasive humor shine though in the wild tales he tells, which make the tales even more "Manetti-esque," and that much more endearing. Anyone who is critical of Manetti for being arrogant or an egoist in this book or otherwise...forget about not having a pulse, you probably have no soul. Larry Manetti shares a few personal facts about his life that will make your heart go out him. Manetti's been through some difficult times, and more power to him for overcoming them and being the "tough little guy" he is. (albeit, 5'7'' isn't really all that little!) Thanks for sharing some of your experiences Mr. Manetti!
magnum memories.......2006-02-01
I found this book on my shelf recently and re-read it. It's pretty funny and a quick, enjoyable read. I loved Magnum back in the day and still occaisionally watch the reruns on cable. Rick was a great character and Larry Manetti is a great storyteller. The recipes even look good. The episode guide is a nice bonus, since it includes comments and asides on what he remembers about most of the episodes.
A must for MPI fans.......2004-10-05
This is an entertaining but different book...and only for Magnum fans! It gives the reader some funny anecdotes and stories from the life on and off the set. You also get a complete episode guide with some more (or less) interesting private comments by Manetti. He's seems to be a funny guy and that's reflected in how this book is written.
I think Manetti is great as Rick and I appreciate his part of the greatest TV show ever. I'm also grateful for him writing this book that give us fans some more MPI information but I really don't know why Manetti includes some of his best recipes in this book (even if the recipes look really delicious). This book could be better than it is, but it's better than nothing...and for any Magnum fan it's a must!
Aloha Magnum is a wonderful Book.......2002-03-06
I have this book and if you love Magnum P. I. like I do, you will love it too. It has a complete program guide. The book is just wonderful!! A must for evry Magnum fan!!!! Enjoy!!! I have!!!
Should be titled "Aloha Larry Manetti".......2001-05-26
I love the Magnum series, but this book really fell short for me. It was really just a recap of Manetti's experiences off the set, mostly before he even starred in Magnum. Apparently he was a real boozer & bruiser & is very proud of all the trouble he caused. Personally I was hoping for a more personal account of what it was like working with Selleck, Hillerman, Mosely, & Bellasario, but those guys are rarely mentioned. If you're a die hard fan like me, then you may have to get the book just to have on your shelf, but don't expect to be brought to tears.
FYI, if you want to hear some inside scoop on Magnum, p.i. then check out E!'s True Hollywood Story on Magnum, p.i. coming soon!

Stories until now untold.......2005-03-28
One way of dealing with events that bring one to a daily struggle is to tell a story, and Maria Ritter has told a fascinating story, captivating at every turn, and elucidating a period in her life that helps us all in overcoming the struggles of our own pasts. This book is one of several appearing in these days about the world of the writer's childhood. We have heard it from those who suffered through the holocaust, we have heard it from the point of view of Europe coming out of the destruction of World War II, but here is another account of one who was a child, severely wounded in the bombing of Dresden, seeking to find her past, and either forgive it to redeem it in the light of all that history has shown about the power and abuse of Hitler in Nazi Germany.
I recommend highly this journey along with its therapeutic methods to those who would follow in this journey or understand better the children of World War II.
Moving Memoir.......2004-09-27
This book touched me on many levels. First, it was eye opening to learn more about the effect of WWII from the prospective of a child in Germany. To learn not only about the raw experience of war itself, but the struggles and shame after the war. Issues that are complex for anyone, let alone a child who was given no explanation for what had happened. Second, it is a story of survival and the resilience of the human spirit. Third, it discusses the importance of coming to terms with the struggles of the past and learning to be at peace with them.
Both heartbreaking and inspirational.......2004-05-19
Maria Ritter returns to Germany as an adult, and through the recollections of her early childhood, recalls the horrors and devastation brought to her homeland through the Hitler regime and the post WWII years under the communists.
With her father fighting in the German Army, her family becomes refugees from both the Russians in the east, and Allied bombs from the sky. Making numerous moves to try and ensure their safety, they go to Dresden and become victims of the firebombing in February, 1945. Dealing with the reality that her father may never return to them, her brave mother takes the initiative to escape to the west, leaving behind loved ones in the east during the post war years...and the resulting story of their escape and subsequent life is one of inspiration and encouragement. Coming to terms with much of the heartbreaking events she suffered as a young child, makes this read a heart rending and touching memorial to all the innocents who have had nothing whatsoever to do with politics and war.

Pithy Comments on the Occupation of Knoxville.......2000-07-10
Two g-grand nieces of Ellen House discovered these diaries in her trunk upon the death of an aunt. What a find! Ellen House had strong opinions and voiced them. The Siege of Knoxville (November 1863) is covered and Sutherland's footnotes make for GOOD history. Don't think, you WWII GIs out there, that "scuttlebutt" started in "our" war. There was plenty during the Civil War, some preposterous. Sutherland provides good interpretive notes. Highly recommended! Four stars only because there are a few gaps in Ellen's coverage of the War in Knoxville, but who can blame her. Deprivation was the order of the day.

Get to Know Michael Moore.......2007-01-05
Quick easy reading book. Fun, humor, and truth in the Michael Moore style. If you like him, you will like the book.
Book Description
Mine was not the Kentucky of bluegrass, juleps, and cotillions; the Kentucky of my youth was one of coal banks, crawdads, and country music.
A memoir of growing up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, Creeker heralds the arrival of a fresh new voice. Linda Scott DeRosier's humorous yet poignant autobiography is the story of an educated and cultured American woman who came of age in Appalachia and remains unabashedly honest about and proud of her mountain heritage.
Those who wax nostalgic about the beauty of the old ways probably never drew lye from ashes to produce a hunk of soap or hoed a hill of corn in a Kentucky August when the air was so wet and heavy you needed gills to breathe. DeRosier has, and she chronicles her life with honesty, wit, and insight.
A tale that begins and ends with family, this is a story not only of accomplishment but of acknowledgementof self, relationships, the challenges and consequences of choice, and the impact of the past on the present. It describes an Appalachia of complexity and beauty rarely revealed to outsiders.
Customer Reviews:
A LIFE FULL OF SURPRISES.......2005-03-26
"Over the course of my life, I have been lucky in that I have seldom managed to get exactly what I wanted; instead, I have most often been able to grow to appreciate what I got." You find out all the things the author strove for during her youth that never seemed to materialize...except for her studies when she always did well except for a very short period of time.
Linda Scott has told about her life that is most revealing and about a place in Appalachia in Eastern Kentucky that is so well explained that you know exactly what her hometown area looks like and how everyone lived. The twists and turns in her life are like a corkscrew where changes are constant, but purpose remains strong. The author is the most down-to-earth academician I have ever known including my brother who is a retired professor. If you want a marvelous reading experience, then get this book. I guarantee it!
One Good Book.......2003-05-01
I loved this book. It really tells the story of my people.
She Took Me Home.......2002-08-15
I was born in Paintsville (home of Loretta Lynn) and had to move away when I was 4. Reading this book took me back to my Grandma's front porch and the well outside. It reminded me of church outhouses and dinner on the ground. Made me want to throw rocks in the creek off the bridge at Grandma's and walk up to the family graveyard to wonder about my ancestor's lives. If you are from Eastern Kentucky, this book will make you proud to say "warsh" and "tard." If you aren't from there, read it anyway. It might make you appreciate us "hillbillies" a little more.
Sad, but true..........2002-02-19
As a long-time enthusiast of Appalachian literature, I was eagerly aniticipating reading 'Creeker'. Though I didn't care much for the stereotypical title, I thought I would be able to make it past it to enjoy a unique brand of literature.
Boy, was I wrong!
This book typifies the apologist mentality that premeates Appalachia and keeps the ignorant serfs on the proverbial feudal land.
If you're a true fan of Appalachian literature, stick with the true masters, Bobbie Ann Mason and Lee Smith.
Creeker.......2001-12-05
This was a great book and I hope she writes more. It was written in a way that you could invision it all. If you like to read about mountian people, and days gone by, then you will love this book.
