Still a niche to fill.......2005-09-27
I had a comprehensive exam to cover all of my core classes as the end of my MBA, in place of a dissertation. Having sold all of my books on Amazon (oops) after finishing the individual classes, I needed something to catch me back up in all the core disciplines. Well this book didn't quit do it. It was good in the more numberless skills such as strategy, marketing and some econimics but fell way short of the mark in the more number intensive areas of statistics, finance, and accounting. When I say way short of the mark, I don't believe you could find even the subject for the latter three areas in the book. It is a decent reference and provides good information on the areas it covers but I would expect more from a 'desk reference'.

This desk reference is a wonderful tool. I thank God for the publishing of this book. I am a busy Mom/Wife/Accountant/MBA Student/Entrepreneur. This book saves me a lot of time and energy when I am doing research. I can get a quick synopsis of the topic, which makes it easy to narrow down my research efforts for more information on that particular topic. Or it helps to refresh my memory of an area of study. It reminds me of all the different essentials involved in certain consulting projects or research papers. GET THIS BOOK, THE INVESTMENT IS EXTREMELY WORTHWHILE!

I bought this book (all new, but from Amazon market place seller for [lower than retail cost] - the only thing missing was a dust jacket, and I figured it was not worth paying an extra [money] on Amazon for the jacket). At [the lower price] I think it's a book worth having as a reference. I often need to go into details of any project that I handle, but this book provides reliable references I can go check out instead of using a shot-gun approach.
I would highly recommend buying this book in [a lower than retail price range]. At [retail], it's overpriced!

MacMichael [1882-1969] was a dominant figure in the history of the Anglo-Egyptian Regime in the Sudan. He served there from 1905 to 1933: from early 1906 until 1912 in the Kordafan, in 1916 as political officer with the Darfur Field Force, and in 1917-1918 as sub-governor of Darfur, he had long experience of Kordafan during the formative period from him and it. He published, among many books, The Tribes of Northern and Central Kordafan [1912] and A History of the Arabs of the Sudan [1922], both long considered authoritative works. With the arguable exception of Sir Reginald Wingate and Sir Douglas Newbold, he was the most important British Administrator of the Sudan.

Based on interviews of thirty-four Palestinian and Israeli teenagers, this uplifting book presents candid, first-person narratives of their day-to-day lives. These young people describe their ordinary lives, including their interests, facts about their families, friendships, and neighborhoods, as well as their spiritual concerns and dreams for the future. Photographs of the youngsters accompany the narratives, and together both picture and story offer a revealing glimpse into the common humanity that Palestinians and Israelis share.
A striking aspect of these stories is the depth of understanding and the brutal honesty exhibited. One teen exclaims, "If children had been in charge of managing their countries, things would not have happened the way they did. Children know how to get along with one another, despite everything." Another says, "A person should be loyal to his principles, but there's something more important which he has to do: He must be ready to criticize his own views." Everyone interviewed expresses the hope that they will someday live in peace with others in the region.
The voices that speak movingly from these pages offer many insights into the perceptions and feelings of young people in this strife-torn area of the world. They hold out the hope that the shared dream of peace may eventually overcome the differences that now divide the two sides.

Sad, amusing, wise, naive, and touching, these anecdotes, observations, and speculations by Jewish and Arab teenagers will long reverberate in the mind of the reader. Each account reflects the mind and temper of a thoughtful, self-aware individual poised between the innocent hopefulness of childhood and an adult's growing consciousness of the complexity of life and the history it brings. For Jews and Arabs living in the Holy Land, that history has, for a hundred years, been particularly burdensome. For the reader, news and events emerging from that area will likely have the joy and the weight of new names and faces inextricably attached to it.

Once the most powerful and feared agent in Hollywood, the notoriously press-phobic Michael Ovitz cooperated with this biographer, so you won't hear about the arrogance or bullying business tactics that were common Tinseltown knowledge. (For a more critical evaluation, see the July 7, 1997 issue of Fortune.) Instead, you get a revealing account of his childhood and his only public discussion of his disastrous 14 months as president of the Walt Disney Company. It's a worthwhile trade, but bear in mind that it's only one side of the story.

Like Him or Hate Him, it's Thorough.......2006-03-24
You might walk away from this book thinking Mike Ovitz is the All-Powerful WunderMaster that many think he is.
You might away from this book thinking his a self-centered, narcicist who deserved his fate at Disney.
Either way, when you finish reading this book, you'll get a pretty thorough account of what his business life is like.
The critics who calim this book make him look 'too' good forget a rather important fact: Ovitz really WAS known as the most powerful man in Hollywood for several years, if not a decade!
This book is not self-serving. In fact, you often get the feeling that author thinks he's a big as a paranoid nut as many of us 'real worlders' do.
But it's well written and it covers a lot of ground. If you want to know how Mike Ovitz got to where is is (both the ups AND the downs)...it's a good read. If you want to read about someone entirely driven and successful, I highly reccomend it.

This book is a shameless puff piece. Ovitz is just mister wonderful. What exemplifies the attitude of the author is when he lists clients who left other agents to go with Ovitz. He will name all the movies these clients did with the former agent, saying they were all flops, then name the movies these clients did with Ovitz, saying they were all hits. As though Ovitz had the magic wand. But if you are at all familiar with the movies listed, you know that a lot of the movies listed before a client went with Ovitz were HITS. And a lot of movies listed after a client went with Ovtiz were FLOPS. That's a shamelss distortion of the facts, to make Ovitz look perfect. And it's not the only distortion. Nonetheless, I'm not giving the book one star, because I did learn some stuff I wanted to know.

Amazon doesn't allow zero stars - shame.This is a book about journalistic fear...and in that sense it should be recommended reading on a psychology course. According to Slater, Ovitz is a classroom whiz, a college football star, a business guru, and a true visionary in all aspects of man's struggle with the universe. Let me put it all in context for you...from some of the Author's opening pages. Ovitz gave a list of people to the Author, for research, most people on that list 'phoned Ovitz to get permission to speak! Then, Slater actually used those same people as the backbone for his writing - enough said. Ovitz may be a bad or good guy, who knows and who cares (this book was purchased for me).Basically, this is a project that the world didn't need, but Slater, having begun, made a thoroughly bad job of it. I'll admit to stopping this book after reading 80% of it - if I could get a rebate on my wasted time, I would. I'm embarrassed for Slater

I found this book chronicling Ovitz to be entertaining and informative. My favoite part is the one when Ovitz and associates leave William Morris and strike out on their own. I suppose I'm more interested in what lessons the book has to offer, as opposed to how accurate it may be. I bought several copies for friends.

I have read the reviews below, and this is similar to the love'em or hate'em polarization in the press. I liked this book. IT WAS FUN. Getting this perspective (quite favorable to Ovitz) may be off-putting to the purists, but then I do not believe you should read biographies in a vacuum. No one said getting to the top should result in everyone loving you. Winners are going to have their proponents and opponents--just like the ordinary man. Get a life and get a little perspective. Read the book and get the essence of the story. It is a solid story of the quest to be the best and how great leaders consolidate their positions almost out of instinct. You will learn something in this book and you will have fun in the process. It is a short book and an easy read. Judge for yourself. I do recommend you read some of the Vanity Fair articles and the Fortune article on the man.

This is a great book and should be made into a movie.......2006-11-24
I think this was a great book. It answers alot of unasked and unanswered questions. It also talks about the effects of war. We met the author at a time share and she gave a talk about the book. She was very interesting to listen to. My Dad read this book too. He agrees with me that she didn't leave anything out. I did wonder why I couldn't get a straight answer from distant relatives where our relatives were from. When a country or state boundary line has moved other places people write on there family tree death or birth record that when the people were born they live in X which is call Y in 2006. I never thought they were not telling the truth because they were afraid the communists would find them.
If you want to read an interesting book about Russia and Germany about WWII this is the book for you. The section about life in America was vivid about living with her parents but when she was more integrated into American life and not living with her parents the information was slimmer. I definitely wouldn't have wanted to live on a cotton plantation in the South.
