Book Description
Here at last is the indispensable resource that has helped the writers and editors of The Wall Street Journal earn a reputation for the most authoritative business writing anywhere. Originally written exclusively for the paper's staff, The Wall Street Journal Guide to Business Style and Usage is a landmark work. Many years in preparation, it has now been expanded and revised for anyone who wants to write well, but especially for those in the business community. The only book of its kind, it offers A-Z guidance on style and usage, bearing in mind the special needs of business professionals and including the latest business terminology.
If ABC is no longer the American Broadcasting Company, what is it? What is the difference bet-ween "adjusted gross receipts" and "adjusted gross income"? How about the differences among "adopt," "approve," "enact" and "pass"? When should you say "affect" and when "effect"? When did Generation X end and Generation Y begin? And what the heck is the new name of Andersen Consulting? Our language is ever changing, ever mutating, and the choice of the right word bolsters your credibility with readers. As the go-to resource for these questions and others, The Wall Street Journal Guide to Business Style and Usage gives readers a competitive edge for succeeding in the world of business. It is an invaluable resource for any member of the business community who has ever had to write a memo, report, proposal, press release or e-mail.This guide is the definitive reference work to keep close to your desk -- the last word for everyone who works with words.
Customer Reviews:
More a basic dictionary than a guide to style and usage.......2003-02-11
I was somewhat surprised that any publisher would consider this text a guide. Basically, it is formatted like a dictionary with various business-related vocabulary listings and their definitions. Usage applies to the spelling and capitalization of the listings. My expectations were that this book was similar to a Chicago Manual of Style within a business writing context that includes recently created words germane to the business world. Unfortunately, it isn't useful in this regard. For example, if you want to find out how to use colloquial business language such as "leverageable", you probably won't have much luck with this text as such words appear to be absent.
...
Lastly, the organization leaves something to be desired as the usage topics such as Abbreviations are mixed in with the vocabulary entries, which essentially is the entire book. I really see very little value in acquiring this book...
Perfectly fine for what it is........2002-07-23
As its title says, this book is The Wall Street Journal's *style* guide and, to a lesser extent, a usage guide. A style guide is something specific to the book-magazine-newspaper publishing world: a volume that tells the writers and editors for a given publisher how they should handle certain recurring situations. ("Style" in this context refers to the mechanics of prose composition, not to a writer's individuality of expression.) Any style guide's main purposes are to promote consistency and to save the time that would otherwise be wasted in continually rethinking issues that the house has already decided. Whether the guide also promotes "good usage" in the sense of Strunk & White or Fowler is almost irrelevant. A style guide is thus a series of more or less arbitrary decrees from the boss -- don't use a serial comma, don't put a comma before "Inc.," capitalize "The" in "The Wall Street Journal," etc. It's not the job of the typical style guide to explain why one usage is preferred over another or to give its user choices; rather, its job is to set forth the rules followed by a given publisher.
The Wall Street Journal Guide to Business Style and Usage is exactly what its title suggests and a bit more. It tells you how The Wall Street Journal has answered the questions that, experience has shown, arise when writing about business. It doesn't debate the wisdom of hyphenating fractions, for example, but simply tells you, "This is how we do it at WSJ."
In addition, it contains helpful definitions of business terms and (much less frequently) of grammatical terms. But, if you want a business dictionary or grammar book, then this should not be your first choice. You should buy this book if you write, or edit writing, about business, and you want to know how the world's foremost business publication handles the same problems you face.
Useful, But Not a First Choice.......2002-01-02
If you want to know the meaning of derivative claims, leveraged buyout, offshore buying units or Brady bonds, this is the book for you.
If you need to know the definition or usage of the words Amish, tort, girl or the location of Exxon, then, by all means buy this book.
But I don't know why anyone would want to spend $30 (the standard price) for this book, put together by the Wall Street Journal's Paul R. Martin, because it is uneven, moving from the obvious (the word girl, for example), offering up tidbits of definitions of rather well-known words (the Amish) and the obscure (offshore buying units.) It is a book of multiple purposes or no clear purpose at all to the public.
Internal stylebooks sometimes suffer from a fuzziness growing out of dual purposes, meant to fix the same errors that crop up regularly, to define the words most troublesome for that publication, to provide consistency in usage and presentation. Sometimes they are little more than a compilation of the memos issued by a copy desk or news editor, reminding people about the correct names of companies or the policies on datelines, or to remind editors on acceptable headline practices.
Other times, stylebooks grow out of a sense of mission to guard the language from silliness and doublespeak while allowing the language to grow, as English does.
What I didn't find in this book was the Journal's obvious ability to teach, as demonstrated in some other WSJ guides. While a stylebook doesn't have to take education as a mission, once it goes public, the educational component would seem to be essential.
Why else would anyone not worried about whether to capitalize executive director buy this book? As an internal publication, the stylebook is useful. It sets standards and clearly tackles problem words, I'm sure fed by repeated misuses of certain words or facts by its own staff. I'd be willing to bet that the items on defuse/diffuse, or bizarre/bazaar, for example, are included because someone(s) on the staff has demonstrated confusion on their proper usage.
This is no knock on the obvious effort that went into putting this book together. Virtually every editor I know flees in terror at the prospect of having to produce a stylebook for the company. But once it went public, it needed some more thought. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to collect style and language manuals, or people who need more sources of information on certain business terms. But I wouldn't rush out to buy this as a first choice on either language or business.

Young Jeff.......2004-03-06
The Papers of Jefferson Davis is a project out of Rice University in Houston, Texas. The entire series is well-edited, nicely produced and the format of the series is reader-friendly. The books reproduce all of the letters Davis wrote, as well as his speeches, telegrams and the responses to his letters. The responses appear in the footnotes and the appendix of the books.
For anyone with an interest in the American Civil War, Jefferson, or the politics of the Confederacy, these are welcome volumes. Most surprising to me is that Davis comes across privately as an intelligent, sometimes witty man. His letters to hiw wife, Varina, are especially intriguing. Highly recommended.

Very good book.......2002-12-11
Although I haven't read this book in print form, I have read it online for free. It's very authoritative and full of information. The only problem I have is that it lacks subjectivity: doesn't tell you the "problems" a certain career might have or its workload.
In conclusion, every student or non-student who's just looking for a different career path will benefit from the info in this book.
Ideal reference for perosnal job and career research........2000-05-04
In its Occupational Outlook Handbook 2000-2001, The U.S. Department of Labor provides exhaustive, accurate, up-to-date information on all major jobs and occupations in the United States. This easy to use, authoritative, and definitive reference offers the most useful database of information on jobs and salaries available today. All jobs are arranged into logical clusters, making it simple to find a given occupation. The descriptions are clearly written and replete with pertinent and useful information on skills, pay, working conditions, training, educational prerequisites and more. Occupational Outlook Handbook 2000-2001 is an essential, core reference title for school and community job center counseling, and ideal for personal job and career research.
A big help.......1999-07-27
It's definitely a good book to have, if anything because it's very clearly cross-referenced. I got a lot out of it, and have been lending it out to a lot of my friends. VaultReports publishes similar stuff which is also pretty good.

maxene andrews-an andrews sister-great lady and friend!.......2005-02-18
I am a professional director in the American theatre, and for the last 20 years of her life, it was my joy to direct and collaborate with Maxene Andrews on many shows, radio interviews, personal appearances, and stage appearances! She was a great lady with a heart of gold, and such pride in America!
She always spoke highly of her sisters and family, and was never boastful about the major contribution "The Andrews Sisters" made to America, and especially the WW II effort to bolster the spirits of our fighting men and women.
Maxene is sorely missed by her friends and fans, but the book she wrote with Bill, "Over Here-Over There," is a treat to read and love! She was excited when "telling the memories!" The book especially reflects wit and faith in times of great trouble for our country. The music and the stories behind the shows for the USO are inspiring!
I am happy to have known Maxene and to have been a part of her life as her director and friend! No single singing group in our history has equally the perfection and spirt of these three Greek daughters of an immigrant to America!
Maxene Andrews is a spirit that continues to brighten our torch of freedom through the music that she and her sisters sang. The stories told in this book reflect the scenes behind the scenes of keeping America smiling!

Stars that helped out by entertaining the troops..........2002-11-24
Great book about the Andrews Sisters, their work during the WWII years with the USO, and many of the other stars that participated in these shows to entertain the troops.
Back in MY day ..........2000-05-26
This book provides fabulous insight on WWII and the spirit of America that helped win the war for the Allies. So many times, my parents said, "Why, back in my day we didn't get meat at every dinner. But we didn't complain: we LIKED it!" If you want to know more about America's patriotic spirit and how it "gets the job done", you'll love this book. The Andrews Sisters were a class act and Maxine and the other USO "soldiers in greasepaint" did their best to encourage and cheer our fighting forces on home soil and abroad. This book has a lot of history and tells about emotions of the folks during that time in a very poignant way. If you ever wondered why certain songs with wacky titles were popular ("Six Jerks In A Jeep"), you'll come away with greater understanding.

Nobody's unhappy family was ever quite like that of Lorna Sage, whose ruthlessly funny, excruciating, inspiring memoir Bad Blood won England's Whitbread Biography Award. She grew up in the '40s on the Welsh border, in the crossfire between her grandparents, a bitter, bibulous, bookish vicar resembling Jack Sprat and his short, "fat doll" of an ignorant wife. He preached earthy sermons about how one might prefer for a wife "Martha before dinner, Mary after dinner." His wife's "notion of marriage [was] that a man signed you up to have his wicked way with you and should spend the rest of his life paying through the nose." Grandma blackmailed the vicar with his diary of adultery, in which she scribbled vicious comments invaluable to the family historian. She gobbled sweets; he drank, fumed, and helped make Lorna Sage a noted literary critic. There is much more: the vicar's affair with his daughter's school chum, the cosmic impact of Bill Haley and his Comets, Lorna's precocious pregnancy, and the strange way lives ricochet and echo each other. Sage manages to give her rural upbringing a brooding Gothic poignance and the comic force of Cold Comfort Farm. She describes a moment after her grandfather's death in the vicarage, "where everything seemed to be wearing thin and getting see-through, as though a spell were dissolving." But the shades of her clan won't quite fade, and thanks to this book, they're here to stay. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Blood trickles down through every generation, seeps into every marriage. An international bestseller and winner of the Whitbread Biography Award, Bad Blood is a tragicomic memoir of one woman's escape from a claustrophobic childhood in post-World War II Britain and the story of three generations of the author's family and its marriages.
In one of the most extraordinary memoirs of recent years, Bad Blood brings alive in vivid detail a time -- the '40s and '50s -- not so distant from us but now disappeared. As a portrait of a family and a young girl's place in it, it is unsurpassed.
Customer Reviews:
engrossing and self-aware.......2007-06-25
I read through this book in a long afternoon, finding it totally engrossing. The story is about a young girl growing up under the roof of her grandfather, an intellectual vicar who led a double life of sex and booze, and her grandmother, an angry, disappointed anti-intellectual diabetic who lived for the treats of going to movies, candy, and scented soaps. The two detested each other, and their daughter wore herself out and sacrificed her personality to keep the household going in a very marginal way. The daughter had a daughter of her own, the author of this memoir, Lorna Sage. I don't think the point of this story is that her life was a nightmare, though it was hardly happy. It was about how, as humans, we all just keep making messes of our lives, generation after generation, and we all have our own family history and genetics which determine our strengths and our devastating flaws. Lorna inherited her grandfather's "bad blood", along with his use of books to escape both the place he was in (an isolated, wet, postwar depressed backwater), and the mess he was actively making of his life. In the middle of this mess, Lorna used this gift to survive, and even to struggle out of the quagmire by getting an advanced education.
Not only well written but an amazingly fine book.......2004-09-15
This finely written memoir of her childhood as an Anglican minister's granddaughter. Today, or recently, [she died in 2001] Sage is an English literary critic and her memoir is both appreciably granular and endowed with a coherent overview. Highly recommended. Won the Whitbread Biography Award.
Post War England.......2003-07-16
I grew up in the same 1950's in England and apart from her randy grandad shared many of the same experiences, feelings and general discomfort with the miserable, narrow social conditions in England. Put another way a perfect breeding ground for the english character of inhibitions, repression of feelings, violence and fear of economic success riddled with Edwardian class distinctions of no value/relevance in the 50's. Jealousy of the American post war success and hide bound by genteel poverty everywhere it was not surprising that England's social scene exploded in the 60's and 70's. I left England for the US many years ago to escape the trapped kingdom of the mind and the pathetic lack of real freedoms, nostalgia is the UK's greatest industry and the more books like this that appear will help people understand that england's "ennui" is not that attractive after all !
Yowtch! This is a hilarious, wicked, killer of a memoir.......2003-05-04
Holy moly! You wanna talk about a dysfunctional family? Here it is. It's during the years of WWII. The author's father is off fighting for God and country, and her mother is having a delayed adolescence, so author Lorna Sage is shipped to her grandparents house somewhere in rural England. Her grandparents are weird, weird, weird, but it is their very faults that ultimately make Sage, a well-known and powerful literary critic, into the person she becomes.
Her grandfather is a debauched, intellectual, furious and infuriating vicar whose idiosyncrasies were seemingly limitless. Her grandmother's rage at her lot in life and the man who was responsible for it (and by extension, ALL men) never once abates - and you almost champion her for her constancy.
Bad Blood reads as wicked fun with a strongly feminist underlying message. I loved it.
Readable - but not a must have.......2003-02-09
The story of an unexceptional childhood - mild neglect, some poverty and a very filthy home - neither sordid nor tragic nor eventful enough to be compelling reading. Especially for a person raised in India the dysfunctionality level of childhood/family seems average. The only redeeming feature is Lorna Sage's writing style. Witty and insightful. Normally this should raise a book to atleast 3 and a half stars but somehow this one does not quite make it past "interesting enough to read when there's nothing better to do". To use review cliches since they work so well in describing a book, it is readable but far short of unputdownable.

This book covers everything you need to know as a self-employed contractor through hiring your first employee.
The straightforward language of this book explains the business side of being a professional tradesperson, and shows the benefits of doing things properly. It is backed by many examples of what has worked and not worked for others.
The book also shows how to plan for your retirement and balance your business and personal life.
Whether you are just thinking about going out on your own, or you've been running things by the seat of your pants, this book will help.

Smart Business for Contractors.......2007-01-16
Good solid information on the accounting, legal and business details of a construction company.
Great Contractor Trade Book.......2006-11-15
I am starting an electrical contracting business and needed help with the office/legal side of the business. I read 4 books on starting a business. This book was the most practical and relavent for me as it was written specifically for the contractor trades. This book provides a good overview of the business details that are required for a business to operate and succeed. It contains very practical examples of what to do to before you start your company and as you run your company. Buy this book first and you may not want any others. Good job with this book Jim.

Book Description
Maihafer explains how the media greatly influenced the conduct of the Civil War and the pubic's perception of teh presidencies of Lincoln, Johnson, and Grant.
Customer Reviews:
Stretched too thin.......2003-07-08
The inherent problem with this book is that it's stretched too thin and tries to cover to many personalities. Charles Dana and Greeley are ancillary players in the civil war drama; there's enough material on Grant and journalists to warrant a study of him alone. In addition, Charles Dana deliberately muddied the historical waters by having others ghostwrite his memoirs and constantly changing this stories or giving conflicting testimony about various events.
Maihofer writes well and certainly displays a prejudice in General Grant's favor. There are few factual errors and the pace is lively. However, the book would have been improved had he restricted the narrative to U.S. Grant and eliminated Dana and Greeley. Ultimately this makes for a somewhat disjointed book and one is sorely temped to skip over the chapters with the two minor supporting players.

Book Description
In 1963, Andrew Loog Oldham was a precocious hustler of genius on the London scene, with a keen eye for the next look and a willingness to gamble on it. He was all of nineteen when Brian Epstein took him on to be the Beatles' London press agent, and already regarded as someone who could make things happen. But it was when he went to hear a relatively unknown blues combo perform that Oldham found his true calling. "I met the Rollin' Stones," he recalls simply, "and said hello to the rest of my life." He took on more than a band; he took on an irresistible force that, with his vision, would become the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band of All Time. In addition to indelible portraits of Mick Jagger and crew, Stoned regales the reader with candid memories of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, and Marianne Faithfull-whom Oldham also created. Joined by contemporaries such as Pete Townshend, Vidal Sassoon, Diana Vreeland, Nik Cohn, and others who counted, Oldham gives us a privileged, brilliantly clear-eyed, and unmistakably authentic view back to where, for generations of music fans, things first started rolling.

Out of my head.......2004-11-19
Andrew Loog Oldham is best known as the manager of the Rolling Stones, but he has lead an interesting life outside of that. But of course, most people will want to read this book to get his memories of the Rolling Stones. Unfortunately for Stones fans, we don't get to his first meeting with the Stones until page 185. Also unfortunately, the book ends after his first year as the Stones' manager. I assume there is a sequel in the works. Anyway, the book is fairly interesting. It includes other people's memories of Andrew, as well as his own. Rolling Stones fans will probably like it, although they would like it better if it was entirely about his memories of the Stones.
The guy who said Hendrix was going nowhere.......2004-07-08
This guy is well documented as being lucky as all get out. He doesn't know anything about music.
Get Inside the Head of one of Rocks Most Important Pioneers.......2001-10-16
This book is a "must-read" for anyone with an interest in the Stones, The Beatles, or the (r)evolution of Rock & Roll during the 60s. Oldham's writing style is superb and highly entertaining. While to some readers it might sound like the author is trying too hard to sound "cool" or "hip," the writing style is true to the man. Andrew Oldham writes in the same manner as he speaks, with a sharp wit and a good sense of humour. And, as one who knows his place in history. The book is definitely entertaining and very interesting in giving three different points of view. Oldham's influence on Rock&Roll is definitely under-appreciated. He was as important to the music and style of Rock and Roll in the 60s as Phil Spector was in a previous era. The insights he provides into the business and personal sides of the music business is very interesting. His relationship with The Beatles (Lennon in particular), and other Icons of that period is intriguing. I especially enjoyed reading about AOL's working relationship with the early Stones, before they were crafted songwriters. It is clear that if Oldham had never met the Stones, he would have made some other band a house-hold name. I really look forward to the second volume in this set.
For completists only.......2001-10-15
Some interesting facts tossed ala salad with other excerpts and interviews. I learned a little of Oldham's personality and thoughts, but history is far more interesting in many other books. You won't waste your time with this book, but it probably won't excite you much. Not much else to say.
Andrew Loog Oldham...One in a million.......2001-06-01
This is a GREAT book! It takes place in a time when London was producing film, fashion and music that would forever change people's lives then and now. Even as a pre-teen in those days in which the book is written about, I was very much impressed with the bands that were coming out of England. Most of all it was and still is the Rolling Stones.I have followed the Rolling Stones from the day I heard their first single here in the United States. I have studied their evolution as a band and am quite familiar who Andrew Loog Oldham is and what he did for the Stones. This book was interesting and an absolute delight to read, particulary knowing it was comming directly from Andrew Loog Oldham himself. His style of writing and describing how events occurred is so unique and clever that I found myself re-reading pages instanly for the sheer pleasure of it. Andrew didn't write this book with the intention of writing another book about the Rolling Stones. He wrote about the many interesting people and places that he experianced that shaped his life from the day of his birth to the year of 1964. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of his triography, knowing that there are more fantastic stories to be read from a man who is one in a million!

Highly readble pop history, but heavily biased as an academic work........2006-10-18
Maynard Cohen's book is highly readable, well-written, extremely interesting, and follows the lives of a number of prominant norwegian medical practicioners, and the role they played in Norwegain opposition to the puppet regime put in place by Nazi occupying forces.
As a popular history, it is definitely a good buy.
However, as an academic history, it has some serious failings: a constant stream of anti-collaborationist invective permeates Cohen's work, and he uses emotive language, frequently referring to collaborators as "the traitor", etc. Also, some of the sources he references, such as the diariy entries of Odd Nansen, cannot be taken at face value: many of the diary accounts purport to "reconstruct" conversations. These reconstructions of conversations are, I believe, re-written and extended upon by the authors of the diaries. Cohen makes little reference to this problem.
As an academic work of history, though useful, this book must be taken with a grain of salt, falling heavily as it does on the side of "heroising" and perhaps exaggerating the part plaid by resistance, albeit passive resistance in this case, in Nazi-occupied Norway.
It should also be noted that Cohen is, by occupation, a Neurologist (professor of neurology, rather) rather than an historian.
I gave this book 3 stars. I was impressed by the quality and interest of the book, despite my academic objections.
