In this book, sociologist William I. Robinson offers a theory of globalization that follows the rise of a new capitalist class and a transnational state. Growing beyond national boundaries, this new class comprises a global system in which Japanese capitalists are just as comfortable investing in Latin America as North Americans are in Southeast Asia. Their development of global, interconnected industries and businesses make them drivers of world capitalism.

Robinson explains how global capital mobility has allowed capital to reorganize production worldwide in accordance with a whole range of considerations that allow for maximizing profit making opportunities. As a result, production systems that were once located in a single country have been fragmented and integrated externally into new globalized circuits of accumulation. What this means, however, is not simply that factories are located overseas where labor might be cheaper, but rather that the whole production process is broken down into smaller parts and each of those parts moved to a different country, depending on where investment might be highest. Yet at the same time, this worldwide decentralization and fragmentation of the production process has taken place alongside the centralization of command and control of the global economy in transnational capital.

In turn, this economic organization finds a political counterpart in the rise of a transnational state. The leaders of global businesses and industries think about themselves and how they live in new ways. Hegemony in the twenty-first century, Robinson argues, will be exercised not by a particular nation-state but by this new global ruling class through the machinery of this transnational state. Robinson observes, for example, that global elites, regardless of their nationality, increasingly tend to share similar lifestyles and interact through expanding networks of the transnational state. Globalization is in this way unifying the world into a single mode of production and a single global system and bringing about the integration of different countries and regions into a new global economy and society. But the new global capitalism is rife with contradictions, such as the growing rift between the global rich and the global poor, concludes Robinson. The twenty-first century is likely to harbor ongoing conflicts and disputes for control between the new transnational ruling group and the expanding ranks of the poor and the marginalized. Sure to stir controversy and debate, A Theory of Global Capitalism will be of interest to sociologists and economists alike.

I used this book to review for the Intro to Business Clep and I found that alot of the terms and context of questions were not covered in this study guide. This book as not helpful and a waste of my money.

The Comex study guides are extremely helpful. They summarize the CLEP tests and give you a basis for study. They also ask questions and give you explanations. very useful.

Not best book, but works.......2005-07-25

I used only this book to study for the CLEP test and passed. This is the 5th CLEP test I have taken and it was probably the hardest, however I did pass it with this book. It does assume that you know some terms to start off with (I didn't have any knowledge) and so depending on how well you want to know the subject, I would recommend getting an additional book. If you just want to pass with the basics then this book should work.

Book not proofread and contains inherently conflicting data.......2005-04-26

I have not yet taken the CLEP in this subject. Luckily, I also have Barrons Business Review. I also have 20+ years' experience working in a law office. This CLEP review book has typos throughout, which is irritating and reflects a lack of care. I also lost a HUGE amount of time on two final test questions in the book because the book says one thing on one page and another on the other. "Costs avoided" when calculating damages in a breach of contract are explained in absolutely contradictory ways between one place and another. I thought I was nuts and finally realized the book stinks. Also, when I began studying Barron's, I realized how much more will probably be on the exam (which from reading other reviews on this site appears to be true). I am studying Barron's carefully. My test is in about 3 weeks. Wish me luck! But this one by Thomas Orr is junk. don't waste your money unless your only goal is to have some practice exam questions (but watch out, cause some of the answers are WRONG!)

Minimal CLEP Help.......2004-02-22

I failed the CLEP using this book. There was way too much information missing. Topics on Employment Law and Environmental Law were not even covered. I studied from Barron's Business Law before taking the test again, and passed. Barron's provides very useful examples and YOU SHOULD REMEMBER boxes that are very applicable to the test. You need to study more for this CLEP then the others. This was the hardest CLEP I have taken. Good Luck

I really like this book.......2004-02-12

No, the book is not perfect. Comex's review for Principles of Management it outstanding, giving all the information needed. This book is only half that wonderful. Like everyone else said, it only covers half of the information.
I passed the Principles of Management with a 72. I read this book 1 1/2 times, and sort of skimmed the Barron's Review and got a 56 on the Business Law. Same amount of prep time, but a much lower grade. This CLEP really is harder, I think because the study guides are not as good.
My advice depends on how much of a risk you want to take. I think I would have still got a 56 without the Barron's Review. If you want to pass the first time and be thoroughly prepared, read this book first then carefully read the Barron's Review.
If you do not want to over study and do not mind the minimal grade, try just using this book. It would certainly be faster. If you do that really know everything this book covers, and be prepared to have to take it again.

Worthless Book.......2003-07-09

This book was absolutely worthless! As a conservative estimate, this book may have covered one-fifth of the test questions! I have taken two other CLEP exams and passed them with 17 and 19 points higher than required (using only one book). I failed this exam by five points. You will definitely need additional study material if you purchase this book.

This book gives an excellent summary of the history of parliamentary procedure. In addition, it serves as an excellent reference resource. Don't serve on a board of directors or public body without this tool.

'Robert's' Is Important To Know.......2005-09-17

While there certainly are other options to understanding parliamentary procedure, "Robert's Rules of Order" is a traditional key to knowing the ways things are done. This is the book, with a leather binding. The leather is its strength and weakness.

True, true... this isn't exactly the sort of book you bring to a coffeehouse on a Saturday. However, it is also true that if you are part of an organization that has organized meetings, 'Robert's Rules' is a great place to start. The liturgy of meeting procedure starts and finishes with the rules set forth in 'Robert's Rules.'

The leather looks and feels great. For use in an ordinary meeting context, it is likely too much. As a gift to your favorite politician (or as a editorial comment to your least favorite politician), the leather is a nice touch.

Get this book, but consider getting one of the plain English versions as well. If you are new to parliamentary procedure, you'll find both books in tandem quite helpful.

I fully recommend, "Robert's Rules of Order" by Henry M. Robert III.

Well-edited, covers the end of the Civil War.......2004-03-06

The Papers of Jefferson Davis is a project out of Rice University in Houston, Texas. The entire series is well-edited, nicely produced and the format of the series is reader-friendly. The books reproduce all of the letters Davis wrote, as well as his speeches, telegrams and the responses to his letters. The responses appear in the footnotes and the appendix of the books.

For anyone with an interest in the American Civil War, Jefferson, or the politics of the Confederacy, these are welcome volumes. Most surprising to me is that Davis comes across privately as an intelligent, sometimes witty man. His letters to hiw wife, Varina, are especially intriguing. Highly recommended.

Tribute artists?.......2006-07-02

This book does a fine job of giving you an insiders view into the freak show world of Elvis impersonators. It attempts to teach you to "be" Elvis and to live as Elvis would, carry his spirit in your life. Well as for this I agree with Johnny Carson who said " There is only one Elvis. If life were fair, Elvis would still be alive and all the impersonators would be dead". A little harsh maybe, but nothing has done more to hamper Elvis Presley's image and memory, legacy if you will, than these so called Elvis tribute artists. They mostly promote the bloated, sunglass wearing drug addicted Elvis, who only looked that way at the end and never wore glasses on stage. What about the other 20 years he looked and sounded great! When he had it all! It's because noone can capture that, and the other path is easier, especially if you are fat and can't sing.
They look and sound rediculous!
Elvis Presley was an extremely gifted, charismatic and generous entertainer and person. Sure, he had faults, everyone does, but his talent as an entertainer, singer, and interpreter of song will never be matched.
This book and those people are an insult not a tribute.

The Career of an Elvis Tribute Artist.......2003-08-14

Elvis Lives: The Business of Being Elvis is my second outing with a book about those who perform as a tribute to Elvis Presley. Anyone who enjoys seeing fine performances done in the style of Elvis Presley will find this book to be a valuable way to find out more about where to see the top tribute artists and who to watch and listen to.

The first book I read is called Be Elvis: A Guide to Impersonating the King by Elvis Tribute Artist Rick Marino. It opened up the whole world of how one learns to perform like Elvis and have the right make-up, lighting, costumes and sound. In Elvis Lives, I learned that this book has already sold over 35,000 copies.

That's not surprising in one way, because Elvis Lives points out that about 35,000 people are performing as Elvis now. I had no idea this was such a big business. There are contests all over the world where performers are ranked. This has been a way that many top Elvis Tribute Artists (the best artists don't impersonate Elvis, they perform in honor of him) have gotten recognition and bookings. There are also regular performances of the top acts, which are described in this book.

The only thing this book lacks is a CD with a sample of each of the 100 or so artists who are included singing an Elvis song.

There are interviews with these artists that describe how they got into the business (many were asked to perform by people who noticed a strong resemblance to Elvis), developed their talent, conduct their lives and careers now, their philosophy about being an Elvis artist, and what kind of act they do and where you can see them. These artists range from children to men nearing retirement age. It's clear that many were affected by their perception of Elvis to be more caring, more generous and more considerate of others.

Ms. Thomas-Williams is a talented writer with an eye to interesting details, and she brings out the best in her subjects.

From this, I learned that I should seek out those who try to capture the spirit of Elvis (rather than his appearance or sound), perform will a full orchestra or band, and are happy to interact with the audience during the show and afterwards.

Economically, it seems likely that the business of performing an Elvis-related show is over a billion-dollar industry. Some of the top performers get paid around $25,000 a show. Although they don't do as well as Elvis did, it's pretty impressive.

I found myself yearning to go to Memphis this week in preparation for the August 16th anniversary of Elvis's death, and watching the weeklong The Images of the King contest there. Oh, well, maybe next year!

After you finish enjoying this fine book, think about how else you can recreate the spirit of Elvis in your life. Can you do something nice for your Mother, as Elvis often did? Can you stay up late helping those who are troubled, as Elvis also did?

I was left wishing the author would write a follow up to this memoir. It was good to read a memoir from the man's point of view. The book also got me interested in the different cities and states that the author spent time in growing up with his father.

Long Day's Outrageous Journey.......2005-07-25

What a rip roaring road trip. More ups and downs than a Six Flags ride and more entertaining. One of the best memoirs in the last few years.

Coming of age story of the highest order.......2004-07-05

The author combines memoir, travelogue and coming of age story forms to take you with him on a sad but incredibly funny journey with his alcoholic, grass-is-always-greener father. The facts are heartbreaking but the boy is gonna make it and you know that as you go with him. If you having any wanderlust you will be looking out the window after reading this book. The writing is first-rate with memorable passages. I read half of the book before leaving the bookstore! It didn't hurt that he starts his journey in Albany, which happens to be my home, getting all the details right as he heads to California. But all the rest is purely universal. A must read.

The book reads even better the second time around, and the Afterword addresses some questions I was left with. A real fun romp. It would make a great road flick.
