4 out of 5 stars Actually change the way I work.......1998-10-23

While ALL CHANGE!/The Project Manager's Secret Handbook has a great series of steps for properly managing your projects (it takes up the reverse half of the book), Obeng's focus is on helping you get the right thinking on your project. No easy answers like in most management books, but ways to approach projects and manage them to a successful completion.

The first half, ALL CHANGE!, is actually a narrative about a project manager coming to understand why his projects always seem to go wrong.

I'd compare this to Mythical Man-Month in how much it shaped my thinking.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-03

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

      My favorite chapters were:

      1. Initial business concerns
      2. Your business' structure
      3. Business start-up details
      5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
      7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
      8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Information you won't find anywhere else.......2003-11-10

I have read several books on incorporating and consider J.W. Dicks to be one of the best business authors out there, relevent to legal and business savvy. Many other books are just expanded versions of the free information you can get from your state and the authors are just writers disseminating information and not real business people.J.W. Dicks will provide you with information that you won't find anywhere else. In addition to this book, I also recommend 'Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State" and "The Small Business Legal Kit" both by Dicks. The latter book also includes a handy disk with easy to fill out forms.I purchased a "How To Incorporate Book by Dics for my state (Minesota) where I just opned a business using the information in Dicks books and it saved me tons of money and time.Good books. Highly recommended.

Using the advice in this and the companion book on how to incorporate in any state gave me all the information I needed to start my own corporations in the NY/NJ area.

Dicks books are outstanding - very complete. I highly recommend them to anyone aspiring to start a business and incorporate.

Book is a good source of information about incorporating in general but the title is misleading and only mentions the particular state in the final chapter, a small one at that. Sample forms are too small in size,

                Description:
Multiple linear regression (MLR) is a popular method for producing forecasts when data on relevant independent variables (or cues) is available. The accuracy of the technique in forecasting the impact on Greek TV audience shares of programmes showing sport events is compared with forecasts produced by: (1) a simple bivariate regression model, (2) three different types of artificial neural network, (3) three forms of nearest neighbour analysis and (4) human judgment. MLR was found to perform relatively poorly. The application of Theil's bias decomposition and a Brunswik lens decomposition suggested that this was because of its inability to handle complex non-linearities in the relationship between the dependent variable and the cues and its tendency to overfit the in-sample data. Much higher accuracy was obtained from forecasts based on a simple bivariate regression model, a simple nearest neighbour procedure and from two of the types of artificial neural network.

5 out of 5 stars excellent recipe resource.......2006-07-02

I've made 6 different all-grain beers from this book so far, and all have been very good. The Northwest Stout recipe won me best overall at a local beer club event, over 35 other beers. There are other books much more suitable to "teaching" homebrewing. However, if you already have batches under your belt and you want to add some nice variety to your beer fridge, this book is definitely worth it.

                Cheers.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book with lots of recipes.......2004-10-19

This seems like a pretty good book. I have been looking at it for about a week and it has a variety of recipes in there. Unfortunately many of the recipes have no comments at all and many that do have comments simply state what ribbon the beer won in which state fair. Very few of them actually state what the recipe resembles or how it tastes.

Overall it seems to be a good collection of recipes, just a little disappointed that there isn't more tasting comments.

4 out of 5 stars An even better selection than "Homebrew Favorites".......2002-10-06

This book has a format very similar to that of Homebrew Favorites but has about 20 more recipes, many of them still carrying outrageous names. I liked the later chapters on fruit beers and the herb & spice beers, the idea of using hot peppers (they advise caution) as a flavoring has appeal to me, might help with the flavor some. Chapter 15, the last one, has mead recipes again, I appreciate that one, it'd be the one I'd most want to try.

                5 out of 5 stars Very reliable.......2001-02-27

I rely on this book to pull me through.

I've been brewing for just over 6 years. I do mostly partial-mash/extract brews. This book has been invaluable not just for the recipes it contains, but also for the examples of styles and their ingredients that it presents.

Recipes are convieniently grouped by style and clearly labeled by difficulty (all-grain, extract, etc.). Most recipes also feature brewers and/or judges comments which can be valuable when improving upon or creating your own recipe.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting to brew their own or has been making kits and is looking for more of a challenge.

For the serious all-grain brewer, this book will be less than you're looking for. You should try "Year of Beer" by Amahl Turczyn.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of recipes.......1998-07-21

Before I bought this book I looked at a couple of others first. I thought about Papazian's "Homebrewers Companion" but it had a lot of things other than recipes that I didn't need, and I thought about Higgins "Homebrewers Recipe Guide", but I didn't believe that even 3 people ever really brewed and tested 200 recipes, so I was left with Lutzen and Stevens two books "Homebrew Favorites" and "More Homebrew Favorites". I bought them both.

The books contain lots of recipes (240 in the first volume, 260 in the second) and in every single style. The recipes are evenly split between easy extract recipes and the more advanced all grain recipes. (Good! I can be challenged when my skills improve.) Most important to me was that the beers were brewed by a lot of different people, and a lot of them won awards in lots of different contests and lots of them include some comments about how the beers turned out. This gives me confidence that th! e recipes really worked and the huge number of recipes gives me lots of options and even helps me create my own variations, picking elements I like from one recipe and combining them from another.

The two "Homebrew Favorites" books are probably the best recipe collections on the market, at least for my needs (and probably most other homebrewers too). The books really are on target as far as knowing what homebrewers do in their kitchens.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that there are some recipes in the book that too simple for me or that are kind of goofy (I don't want to make beer with hot peppers in it!) Maybe you would like this though, so look at it and see.

Last year it contained 94 pages. This year it's 368. Last year it focused on investment tax matters. This year it covers not only those, but also stuff that's not on Schedule D, such as adoption taxpayer identification numbers and tips on mortgage interest credit. And this year it adds an index and an appendix with a tax calendar and resource section. The Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide 2000 is bigger and better, yet still retains that "please don't take me too seriously" tone that has become the hallmark of the Fool. Written by Selena Maranjian and Roy Lewis, the 2000 edition covers everything from restrictions on wash sales and how to account for taxes on DRIPs to taking medical and home-office deductions. Clearly the Fool is trying to broaden its appeal beyond stock picking, and this edition is one step in that direction. If you manage your own investments and are looking for a readable tax guide that can also help you maximize that education deduction for junior or offer advice on converting your regular IRA to a Roth IRA, then you'll find this a worthwhile addition to your investment library. --Harry C. Edwards

                Book Description

In this new and expanded guide, two respected authors untangle the thicket of tax regulations and conflicting concepts, picking up where last year's book left off and adding an array of new strategies. As always, the Fool is thorough but makes a complex subject easy to grasp.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, Comprehensive Overview of Taxes.......2000-01-04

This book is worth reading cover-to-cover to learn what you need to know before filing your taxes, and it's also a handy reference that can be used to answer specific questions (I've used it for both). The examples are humorous and clear, and the book does a good job of anticipating what questions will come to mind as you prepare for your tax filing. If your tax situation is getting complicated because of your investments, this book should really help.

                  Unique Rankings
Companies are classified by industry. This edition includes numerous valuable rankings, such as 10-year average annual dividend growth rate, one, three, and five year total returns, top 20 return on equity and return on assets along with top 20 rankings by revenue, net income, total assets, long-term and short-term price scores, highest and lowest P/E ratios and more!

A Great Investment Has Become Even Better
And now, with new tax law changes slashing dividend taxes, investing in Dividend Achiever companies has never been better! Our Dividend Achievers will provide low-taxed income today and perhaps low-taxed capital gains tomorrow.

Historically, dividend income has been taxed at your highest rate. Under the prior tax law, as much as 38.60f dividend income could go to the IRS. The 2003 tax act changed the rules. Now, corporate dividends paid to individuals generally are taxed at ultra-low tax rates. Most investors will pay only 15% tax on dividend income. Investors in the lowest federal tax brackets will pay only 5% tax on dividends. This rate may apply to retirees whose income drops after they stop working. In 2008, those low-bracket taxpayers will owe no federal income tax on dividends they receive. What's more, if you need to sell your dividend-paying stocks, any long-term gains will qualify for those same bargain tax rates: 15%, 5%, or even 0 0n 2008.

How Does a Company Become a Dividend Achiever?
Many thousands of companies pay dividends to shareholders. Fewer than 300 U.S. companies qualified as Dividend Achievers in 2003. In fact, only 2.50f all the publicly-traded, dividend-paying U.S. companies qualify as Dividend Achievers!

To make our final cut, only high-quality companies that have increased their regular dividends for 10 years in a row are chosen from an exclusive list. Thats right...during the boom times of the late 1990s and the struggles of the early 21st century, our Dividend Achievers have steadily taken in more cash and paid higher dividends to investors. In fact, most of our Dividend Achievers have more than 20 years of higher dividends. Truly, the companies on our list have proven to be the top tier of U.S. industry.

                    Book Description

A strong challenge against the present American system of law enforcement, this book contends that politics have prevented police from achieving their sworn mission. Although his analysis is based on established theory, the author uses his own research and experience as evidence of the failure of the criminal justice system. Police departments are revealed as examples of a bureaucracy that has lost sight of its purpose and only seeks to survive. This work will be of interest to those seeking a different and controversial view of criminal justice, police science, public administration, urban studies, and political science programs.

This is a very aptly titled WWII memoir by a former U.S. intelligence officer. Aptly titled because it could certainly have used a little more rigorous editor to eliminate the numerous repetitions and help the narrative flow a little better. That aside, Marshall's memoir is valuable if nothing else for its ground-level description of Anzio--which I had always heard of but never really knew anything about--and the inside look into "order of battle" and "document exploitation." Both are elements of military intelligence whose importance is largely unknown to the general public and Marshall does an excellent job in explaining and showing how it all works. Less important but also interesting are the day to day details of an army on the move from the invasion of Italy all the way into Germany.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging story of an intelligence officer during WWII.......1999-04-15

"A Ramble Through My War" is an insightful account of portions of World War II's European Theater through the eyes of a then-young U.S. Army lieutenant. A highlight of this engaging memoir is an inspiring account of the battle for Anzio--its trials and tribulations. It is unfortunate that Charles F. Marshall, a retired business executive, waited until now--55 years since Anzio--to publish this vivid recollection. Today, there are too few former WWII veterans remaining to appreciate this story and too few others who realize how important Anzio and Alsace were to the total scenario of the war in Europe. A Columbia University educated would-be journalist who later settled for a career in the knitting industry, Marshall used a daily diary maintained through most of "his war" to help chronicle the events viewed from his assignment as an army intelligence officer. Although he missed the Anzio landing, Marshall was at the beachhead from early February 1944, through the terror of German counterattacks against Allied troops with their backs against the sea until the breakout in late May and the run to Rome. Much of his G-2 work involved scouring over captured German documents taken from fallen soldiers. "Most German boys carried enough documentation to write their biographies," he explained. Wallet items included birth certificates, baprismal certificates, diaries, driving licenses, personal letters, family photographs and pictures, often nude photos of wives or girlfriends, "stimulating reminders of the joys awaiting their return," Marshall wrote. From these items he and his colleagues amassed amazing bits of information, "a significant contribution to the battle to undo Hitler," Marshall said. In his narrative he interwove the horrors of war with amusing and perceptive commentaries--often blunt, but necessary to the story. After the Allied victory in Italy, Marshall and his intelligence team moved to the invasion of southern France, on to Alsace, later chasing retreating soldiers of the Reich into mother Germany and finally into Austria. Marshall, in his frequent day-to-day accounts, provides details of the U.S. intelligence operation and how the newly gained information helped in coming battles and air attacks. In the closing days of the war and afterwards, Marshall interrogated as host of Germany Prisoner's of war and other German officials, including Lucie Marie, the widow of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. His recovery of Rommel's letters added much to that story of the war. This book was so enjoyable that I searched for Marshall's earlier war volume, "Discovering the Rommel Murder: The Life and Death of the Dessert Fox" published in 1994. It was found still in print and has been ordered.

Parker was a neighbor and a long time and very dear friend. The book reads just like the stories I loved to listen to him tell. I never tired of them or his sense of humor. He and his stories brought joy to me and to his many friends.

I'm disappointed that there are no more copies in print for more people to enjoy. Parker laid out his folksy brand of humor in his recollections of eight well-lived decades of life. He is sorely missed, but his words live on in his book.

It is my hope that the publisher will print more of this book so that more people can enjoy the rich humor that was Parker's. It's sad to think that anyone would have to pay hundreds of dollars (for the 3 used copies) for the stories that Parker would have so willingly and graciously shared with all.

                                    Book Description

Both historical and extremely entertaining, "A Ramble Through Life" tells the tale of not only the author, but of his family and their place in history. Boyd offers the reader a look into the events that shaped his life, such as stealing a watermelon from a neighboring farm, learning about the facts of life from the sharecroppers on his family's land, his patriotism in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge, and courtship of the woman who would ultimately become his beloved wife. Few details are spared, as Boyd tells the good, the bad and everything in between. Interspersed with pictures and entries from a diary kept by his grandfather during the Civil War, Boyd's "A Ramble through Life" is more than a memoir; it is a living history.
