5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource--easy to understand and smart.......2005-02-15

I heard about this book from a friend in business school who said it was on the recommended reading list. I bought the book and now I understand why it is considered one of the most useful books of the type. I'm persuaded by the writing, the examples, and the presentation. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars A huge waste of time and $$$.......2003-07-30

If it was allowed I would give this book a big fat zero. Alas, one star is as low as it gets. It skims over everything. Nothing practical in here. If you feel compelled to get this book buy a used copy. I am in the process of reading "Start Your Own Business" By Rieva Lesonsky which proves to be a great resource.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful and Interesting!.......2003-01-29

I found this clearly written book to be helpful and even sort of interesting to read. It covers various aspects of setting up a business that uses a website and also setting up the website as well. (I didn't realize that many legal issues could affect your website, such as copyright issues and other publishing laws.) It also provides some fundamentals about contract law and system development you need to know in order to put a website in place. It is a good practical mix of legal and business advice. The sections on how to go about actually building your site, what functions and what content should be on it, are informative and full of issues that I would not have thought of on my own. The book is in a handbook format, and I will probably also refer to it with various questions as I go forward with the process. It also has forms in the back that I can fill in to create a budget. My business is a start-up but it seems like this book would be helpful for anyone who needs to know the legal and practical issues surrounding their business's website.

1 out of 5 stars Probably a good book ,..if you could get it delivered.......2005-02-03

I ordered this for a class only to find out on the estimated delivery day that it is not available from any sources. This happened at 2 separate and different sellers, one being amazon and the other being a college bookstore. Apparantly it is a difficult book to obtain. If you need this book for a class I highly recommend you buy it from one of the used book resellers and not amazon.com as a new book or anyone else who sells it new and gives a future shipment date. Be sure that it is actually 'in stock' before you order it and check that it is the correct edition.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, but be careful........2003-02-18

The forms needed a lot of tweaking, there were parts that referred incorrectly to other parts. And it is heavily client-centric, I think the book was written much more for the person looking to hire a developer than for the developer.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to Internet legal & business issues.......2001-01-23

This comprehensive guide to Internet legal and business issues provides an important key to understanding the law as it relates to online products, internet development, and copyrights. From lawful use of Internet materials and privacy policies to email and linking legalities and service provider issues, Internet Law and Business Handbook goes into quite some depth on the latest issues and law.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable reference.......2000-11-30

In an environment where technology has made change commonplace, one can still look to the rule of law to engender a stable foundation upon which business can be conducted. The "Internet Law and Business Handbook" cogently weaves time-tested laws with the new demands that technological progress has exacted on modern organizations. This is an indispensable reference for the conduct of business in a tech-driven marketplace. It is thoroughly researched and handily crafted to make the arcana of law accessible to the layperson.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone needing internet IP help.......2000-10-02

I found this book to be packed with useful information on how to determine who has rights for what content on the internet, and how you can avoid getting yourself in trouble if you would like to use another party's content. Packed with examples of copyright, trademark and patent information, it lays out a sound approach. Also there are several templates on the accompanying disk that are great, including confidential disclosure agreements. A must-read for anyone "doing" internet content publishing and management.

These papers from the Second EDAMBA Summer School reflect the vitality of the field of business studies. A number of the papers concern themselves with the development of a theoretical understanding of phenomena encountered in business. Strategic management is very practically-oriented, but it is also theory driven. It draws on its own base as well as theories related to cognition, learning and economics. These EDAMBA papers attest to both the need and the desire for reflection on the philosophical and conceptual issues in business studies. The majority of authors are doctoral students from leading European business schools. Tom Elfring is Associate Professor of Business Environment and Strategy, Rotterdam School of Management, Hans Siggaard Jensen is Director of the Doctoral Programme at the Copenhagen Business School and Arthur Money is Professor of Management Studies at the Henley Management College. Japan is about the only nation not represented in Betsy Oppeneer's Celebration Breads. And guess what? In Japan they don't celebrate holidays or special events with bread. Everywhere else, well, it's another story. And who better to tell that story than Betsy Oppeneer, longtime cooking teacher, author of Breads from Betsy's Kitchen, The Bread Book, and Betsy's Bread. There was a time in Europe when eggs and sugar were so costly none but the wealthy could use them for anything but special events, usually holidays like Easter or Christmas. Or there are special breads linked to events like the Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. Oppeneer has scoured the world for breads closely linked to this spirit of celebration, of special event. And what she found, in many cases, was a disappearing world where new generations were failing to carry on traditions and old recipes were fading out of mind and history. Celebration Breads acts as something of a bridge between what has been and what can be.

Always the careful, thorough teacher, Oppeneer begins her book with chapters on ingredients, special equipment, the how-tos of doing it by hand, by heavy-duty mixer, by food processor, or bread machine, and tips and techniques. She divides her recipe chapters by region: Africa, the Americas, the British Isles, Eastern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, Russia and Asia, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. You'll find flat breads like Egyptian Zalabya and yeast breads like Chelsea Buns. There are sweet breads and savory breads. Big breads and little breads. And in each of the more than 75 recipes Oppeneer is right there at your shoulder, enjoying new discoveries and old friends right along with you. --Schuyler Ingle

      Book Description

Every culture celebrates with food. And no food has a greater influence on culture, history, or religion than bread. From the unleavened matzo of Passover to the German stollen of Christmas, from the British hot cross buns baked on Good Friday to the Russian kolach baked for any special occasion, bread in its many forms brings people together, linking traditions and generations.

Bread is Betsy Oppenneer's passion. A renowned cooking teacher, she has spent most of her life baking, and much of it traveling. Celebration Breads: Recipes, Tales, and Traditions is a collection of more than 75 sweet and savory breads from around the world -- from the Americas and Western Europe to Africa and Russia. From her anecdotes about the history and traditions associated with the breads, you'll discover the tradition behind each recipe. Christmas breads from Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, and Egypt; traditional New Year's Challah from Eastern Europe; and Easter bread from Poland are just a few of the recipes for breads made to celebrate well-known holidays, but Betsy has unearthed many more. Bread lovers will be eager to prepare such recipes as Bread of the Dead, a bread from Mexico made in honor of the Day of the Dead; and Scalded Bread, traditionally baked in Lithuania in preparation for marriage. No matter what the occasion, Celebration Breads has the perfect recipe for you.

Teacher that she is, Betsy wants all bread bakers to succeed, whether they're baking their first loaf or their hundredth. Each recipe is laid out in painstaking detail, with instructions for making the bread by hand, with a heavy-duty mixer, using a food processor, and by using a bread machine (if possible). Betsy provides comprehensive chapters on: Bread-Baking Ingredients and Equipment; How to Make Bread (including the 4 Basic Rules of Bread Making); Essential Tips and Techniques for novices and experts alike; a Sources list; and an extensive Bibliography. Betsy even includes a section on Homemade Candied Fruits, in which she provides instructions on how to candy your own fruit and citrus peel to obtain a truly authentic product.

With more than 70 black-and-white line drawings by John Burgoyne (known for his work for Cooks Illustrated magazine), Celebration Breads is an invaluable addition to the bread-baking bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Special Topic Bread Book. Must Have for Bakers.......2004-05-16

I ordered this book by experienced and highly recognized bread baking author, Betsy Oppenneer, because I was having no luck finding a recipe for Eastern European Paska (Easter) bread in my many other weighty bread baking books. I had even looked into cookbooks of eastern European cuisines such as Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Slovakian and Ukrainian. I found only one, which was so simple, I was sure the authors did not give it a lot of thought, or, eastern European peasants really did make this kind of very simple bread because they simply did not have the money or access to saffron, dried fruits, and fresh butter.

I was pleased to find that Ms. Betsy had not one, but two eastern European Easter bread recipes spelled Paska in the Ukraine and Pashka (or Kulich) in Russia. As luck would have it, I had also found a Pashka bread recipe in the latest Easter issue of Gourmet magazine that was, of course, different from Ms. Betsy's recipe. Of course, Oppenneer anticipates this by saying that she often finds dozens or even hundreds of different recipes under the same traditional name. The problem is generally to find the recipe that most closely resembles your personal memory, especially if your Grammy didn't write this precious recipe down or your bakery source has gone out of business or moved its business to Orlando.

All of this is to warn you that even though a recipe you remember may be in this book, it may not be exactly the same as you remember from your childhood or from a trip to Prague or Marseilles or Casablanca. In spite of this warning, it seems to me that Ms. Oppenneer has done a real scholar's job of presenting a good take on a wide selection of the world's celebration breads. In the process, she has reminded us of how central bread is to many cultures' spiritual life. This alone, aside from nutritional questions, is enough for me to not give up my bread in all its varieties in the face of `low carbohydrate' diet doctrines. The best part of this book is that it does not limit itself to coverage of `Bread Central' running from Paris and Rome through Germany to Vienna and the Slavic lands in the Balkans and into the Ukraine and Russia to the Urals. There are interesting samples from northern Africa (Egypt and Morocco, of course), native America (and some European imports to the new world), the Middle East, Greece, Scandinavia, and a rather large contingent of breads from the British Isles, featuring the famous Irish soda bread, hot cross buns, and Shrovetide Pancakes. It should come as no surprise that there are no representatives from the Orient, as wheat, and therefore, bread, simply did not play a large part of their cuisine. I am just a little surprised that there are no samples from south Asia, as I know there are flatbreads common to Indian / Pakistani cuisines. No matter, as the author provides an excellent bibliography of books and that very new, very 21st century bibliography of Internet web sites.

All of these very good things would be of little value if the recipes and bread baking techniques in this MS were not up to snuff. Take my word for it. They are very up to snuff. The book does not give bread baking technique the great depth of treatment you may find in a volume by Peter Reinhart or in Rose Levy Beranbaum's `the bread bible', but I found the author's understanding of her subject and her skill with imparting that understanding to be as much or more lucid as these experts, who are dealing with the more difficult task of covering the entire world of bread, ingredients, and techniques. As far as she goes Ms. Oppenneer makes it all seem very, very easy, without skimping on any of the niceties. Her explanation of kneading and her rationale for that technique may be worth the price of admission for serious, amateur breadmakers.

As this is a book on specific breads and not on breadmaking in general, Ms. Oppenneer does not cover things like artisinal breads based on sponge, poolish, or biga. In fact none of these words appear in the index, even though I did find one recipe which used a sponge. One indication of this limited range is that Ms. Betsy gives four important steps to bread baking over four pages of text, while Beranbaum takes ten steps and about thirty pages to cover basic bread baking. This reinforces the fact that this book is not the only bread book you will need.

Aside from the interest in the subject of the book, the most interesting aspect of the book is that the author gives techniques based on up to four different types of equipment. These are your hands, a stand mixer, a food processor, and a bread machine. I never use a bread machine or a food processor to make bread so I cannot make any judgment on these techniques. I can say that the manual and stand mixer techniques are excellent, with many new twists on how to use this very versatile machine to make bread. Understandably, not every machine works with every type of bread. Next to manual techniques, the stand mixer is the most widely applicable method.

One somewhat disorienting position taken by the author is her not routinely blooming yeast before adding it to other ingredients. Just as I first learned to work with yeast by blooming active dry yeast in warm water and sugar, Ms Oppenneer says she first learned a simpler `standard' technique of simply suspending the active dry yeast in warm water. This is the method she uses in most recipes.

Highly recommended book for those who are looking for a traditional bread recipe. Also highly recommended for bread bakers in general. Especially good for novices, although few recipes are `easy'.

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Book!.......2004-05-05

This is my new favorite book! I've been baking bread since I was 7 years old, and I love to get my hands into a pile of dough. Betsy Oppenneer is my roommate at IACP Conferences, and one of me dearest friends, so sue me if I'm prejudiced, but... she has left NOTHING out of "Celebration Breads!" She has researched not only the recipes, but also the history of each of the breads included in the book. Additionally, she's included three methods for making most of these breads: by mixer, by food processor and by bread machine. Take your pick. She's included some fried treats as well as more traditional breads from all over the world. I've especially enjoyed comparing her recipes with those I've been baking for years. Whatever your ethnic heritage, you will find easy-to-follow recipes for the breads and coffee cakes you grew up with. This may be the perfect year to "get your hands into a pile of dough" and create a tradition!

Max Issacman explains why the market is the hottest and most volatile; how even a novice investor can easily experience the market through QQQ shares; and why now may be the time to invest when the herd is headed in the opposite direction.

2 out of 5 stars Some Basics About Volatile Stocks You Don't Need to Learn.......2001-03-19

This book has lots of detailed, accurate information about NASDAQ and the stocks that trade there. Unless you plan to buy and sell these stocks (which I would advise against for most people), this information is of little value. The book is a good implementation of an inappropriate book concept for most people.

The author makes a great comment. " . . . [T]he market is a place for risk capital." I interpret that to mean money that you can afford to lose, like money you have after you have provided for your retirement, paying for college educations, getting rid of your credit card debt, etc. Now, very few people are in the circumstance to have risk capital. Unless you do, stop thinking about investing in individual stocks now.

If you do have risk capital, I suggest you read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" as your first step. Because it is unlikely that your risk capital should be going first into stocks.

If for some reason, you feel you must be in stocks, please read John Bogle's Common Sense About Mutual Funds.

My favorite quote in the book is "If an investor had used only P/E ratios as a guide to purchase stocks, she or he would have missed out on many large gainers." That is certainly true, and missing out on those gainers would also have allowed you to miss out on many losers . . . and gainers that became losers. Can you think of a stock with an overpriced P/E in March 2000 that is higher today?

Skip this book unless you are thinking about becoming a stock broker.

After you read this review, I suggest you think about other areas where having less knowledge is an advantage. For example, would it help you to know more or less about post-surgical complications?

Take advantage of all those situations when less knowledge is more! Keep your risk capital where it belongs, as the author recommends!

          4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference For QQQ's Investors!.......2002-12-31

Here's a book for the tech investor who wants to know what the different companies in the NASDAQ 100 do. There's a simple company profile, earning projection, revenue growth chart, and key financial ratios.

Since all of these things can be gotten over the Internet these days, the main benefit of this book is that it is in book form and you can pick it up for stock ideas in the tech area (except for IBM and HPQ).

The only thing that I found interesting was the author's Top 25 Picks for 2002-2003. This list includes all the big cap tech stocks except QCOM and has some comments about each choice. There's also an interesting discussion about the QQQ's and the Rydex funds and how it might be better for most investors to simply buy these instead of riding the ups and downs of these highly-volatile individual issues.

I would like to have seen a more lively format, but I guess this book wasn't meant for my entertainment. If you want to buy individual stocks within the NASDAQ 100, you will need more current information in addition to what is presented here.

The Bottom Line: It's a handy reference.

McMorals: A Case Of Corporate [Krock] is a cold, hard, no-punches-pulled look at the bureaucratic corporate culture of the famous McDonald's fast food chain. Especially focusing upon the changes that have come in how McDonald's does business since the death of founder Ray Kroc in 1984, McMorals is written from an inside point of view; author Jim David brings both his own experiences with the McDonald's company and a thoughtful overview of how corporate ruthlessness has utterly taken over Kroc's once benevolent vision. A fascinating tour of what makes the McDonald's chain tick, for good or for ill, that leaves the reader to draw his or her own conclusions concerning the McDonald's changes, motives, and business practices.

                  Book Description

In this beautiful coming-of-age memoir, Alice Koskela captures that peculiar mix of innocence and ruthlessness which is childhood - that time when we know far less than we think we do, and far more than any adult might guess. The Pull of Moving Water describes the cultural simmering of the 1950s and the explosion of the 1960s from the vantage point of a girl growing up inside those years, yet impossibly removed from anything that seems to matter. She's stuck on a farm in southern Idaho, a state so remote and uncool that Dick Clark makes fun of it on American Bandstand.

Moving Water is stunning in its honesty - about growing up a gentile among the Mormons, about what the Cold War did to children, particularly those in the path of mysterious, powdery "bomb rains" that blew in from the Nevada tests, about the cruelty of a breast-obsessed culture for adolescent girls. It will pull you in and take you back, a gracefully written story that recalls the joy and pain of childhood and of an era, lived out in a place that was not, after all, so far away.

                  4 out of 5 stars a lovely story.......1999-09-24

A beautiful intimate story of a young girl growing up in rugged Idaho. This is not a story full of sweetness, but of the tough life small farmers and their family encoutered in their fight for survival. I loved it from beginning to end

5 out of 5 stars This is a fearless memoir of growing up on an Idaho farm........1999-08-30

Okay, so she's one of my best friends BUT EVEN SO, I never knew she could write this well. Her memory is sharp, her observations hard and clear, and her insights are not for the polite or faint of heart. Koskela's early life in the harsh world of Idaho farming country is told with wit and clarity. It may not be gracious but it is REAL and you will find yourself laughing, tsk, tsking and looking back with a new vision on your own childhood. I've known Alice for over 20 years--she's incapable of telling even the most innocent of white lies and so understandably she has written a book of truths. This will by MY Christmas gift this year!

                  5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book.......1999-08-24

I thoroughly enjoyed this graceful, sweet, honest and sometimes heart wrenching memoir. As the illustrator, I was honored to be a part of it.
