    Book Description

How does your boss stack up?

Can you imagine a boss who hides in a dark closet so that he can hear what his employees say when they think he's gone? How about a boss who "saves money" by separating two-ply toilet tissue to make two rolls out of one? Or a boss who made his receptionist climb into a Dumpster to search for papers he had lost -- which turned out to be in his briefcase?

These and other outrageous bosses were nominated as America's worst in Jim Miller's "Best Boss/Worst Boss" contests. Best Boss, Worst Boss features an insightful look by Miller, the bestselling author of The Corporate Coach, at the worst of business leadership.

Best Boss, Worst Boss is not just about bad bosses, however. Jim Miller also points to some of the country's best bosses as people to be emulated, like the boss who took her entire office to the beach for the day, or the boss who writes a thank-you note on each paycheck. With both positive and negative examples, Miller offers his trademark "Corporate Coach" advice -- sound, practical information on managing and being managed, with charts and tips for both employer and employee. Using "best boss" stories and other examples, Jim Miller promotes the strategies, attitudes, and actions that lead to an ideal workplace. After all, happy employees lead to happy customers and a more productive company!

4 out of 5 stars How does your Boss measure up? Are you a Best Boss?.......2001-10-31

This read offers some interesting tales of best and worst bosses. You can compare your boss with them and get some tips on how to cope with the boss who micro-manages or gain tips in how you can be a better boss. Enjoyable read! The anecdotes were great for illustrating the traits we love to hate and the traits we admire in our bosses and in ourselves!

I used this book in law school and continue to use it in my employment law practice. It is an essential for any employment lawyer's library!

    5 out of 5 stars A Law Student's Dream.......2001-04-05

As a current student of Professor White's I may be a bit biased. Regardless of that, however, this book truly is excellent for the law student looking to grasp the employment and employment discrimination law fields, the practitioner looking to update his knowledge, or the layperson seeking to gain an understanding of two extremely important topics. There are tons of examples in every chapter to help you apply the concepts she teaches you as you read the book. It is very clearly written, and it simplifies and clarifies even the hardest of concepts.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best overviews of labor and employment law!.......2000-04-04

Rebecca Hanner White provides a clear and concise overview of labor and employment law terms and concepts, ranging from traditional employment law principles to those developed under modern, federal statutory employment discrimination law. This handbook is appropriate and valuable for everybody - from legal practitioners to college and law students to individuals wishing to understand more about the legal framework for employment in the United States. Everybody should read and review it for both general understanding and as a starting point for more focused study. This book is a jewel of a find!

                  Book Description

Time and time again when we analyze how poor, delayed, or unnecessarily manipulative communication has damaged or destroyed the reputation, credibility, brand name, or the future of an individual, organization, or product, it often seems that then, and only then, does the search begin for the rules and tests to apply to achieve effective, problem-anticipating, ethically sound communication. This monograph outlines communication goals, fundamental communication principles, standard-setting protocols, and sound approaches that meet or exceed constituent or community communication expectations.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Father/Husband on Bereavement.......2000-10-30

Lisa Donner went through all the treatments for breast cancer. She died at the age of 36 leaving her husband Chris, the single-father of four. This is the story of her battle and his family challenges.

Confronting the Cow offers hope, understanding and consolation to caregivers, cancer sufferers and their survivors. This is a very nicely produced book and a great tribute to Lisa. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com

5 out of 5 stars Young Family Experiences Breast Cancer: A Man's Perspective.......2000-08-18

In Confronting the Cow, Chris Donner does a superb job chronicling his personal experiences and his family's experiences following his wife's breast cancer diagnosis at age 34.

His warm, personable, and at times humorous accounts of life's daily experiences allow the reader to step inside his very existence in a virtual sense.

Donner shares his thoughts, fears, and techniques for supporting his wife, and their four children, who were all less than six years old, at the time the illness presented itself. In his book, Donner works through all of the human emotions and challeges that breast cancer provokes.

He provides just enough technical information to educate the reader on the disease's symptoms and treatment while providing insight into the medical profession's response to the disease.

While the book is powerfully emotional and moving, it leaves the reader with a sense of optimism and well-being.

5 out of 5 stars Confronting The Cow.......2000-08-13

Chris Donner writes an intimate, revealing, and honest account of his wife's struggle with breast cancer and the rebuilding of the lives of himself and his children after her death. The book brought tears to my eyes at times, but also laughter. It is a must read for those who are going through this or have gone through this, and for those who have not had the experiences of cancer in their family or with loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars Confronting the Cow - more than just another cancer story..........2000-06-07

Anyone who has had an experience with cancer or any other terminal illness within their circle of family and friends will appreciate this book. As painful as it must have been to write, the author has done a tremenduous service to all of us who have been within the vortex of caring for a loved one who is dying. His honest account of the emotional, physical, and spiritual ramifications is affirming for those who have been through it, and enlightening for those who have not. From a parental standpoint, the insight gained into the minds of young children is incredible, as the author recounts his young children's behavior and reactions to their mother's illness, death, and absence. Although the subject is sobering, the story is told with warmth and humor, and you will find yourself laughing as you wipe away tears.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing and unique perspective on breast cancer........2000-06-03

Are you concerned about a friend or relative who is dealing with his wife's cancer? If so, read this book.

Donner takes on an daunting task here; telling his (and his four young children's) own story about dealing with his wife's breast cancer. He manages to tell an amazing, sometimes humorous, and devastating tale of attempting to bring himself and his four young children through the hell of losing a wife and mother to breast cancer.

According to the foreword, the author wrote the book for the people who are experiencing what he experienced. Equally important are the insights for the physicians, relatives and friends of these families.

The author's unique sense of humor balances the unpleasant subject nicely. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Not being much of a cryer, I even found a few tears trying to escape.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for everyone and those without much time.......2005-11-08

I am junior in college and had no idea what to do. The career center is loaded with books but they are all very specific - specific to resume building, specific to interviews, specific to job research, etc. and they are humongous. When you see these volumes any desire to start (oh so attractive) job search process evaporates really fast.

Well, this is where I saw this book, Outwitting, in my buddy's dorm room. I glanced through it and it is like Cliff Notes for everything that there is about the job search. It has EVERYTHING in it. I borrowed his book and later had to get my own.

The book walks you through the complete process: from "What AM I" through "Where do I want to be" with "How to lay it out on paper" through "Whom do I know" through "How to make them work for me" etc. It guides you every step of the way: interviews, salary negotiations, post interview activities, etc. AND it is loaded with small tips on everything. So on the top of guiding you through, it will give you little pointers that I would have never known about. AND the key is that every chapter could be read separately. So that if you are half way through the search process and do not want to read the specific 500-pages book about Interview Follow Ups or anything like that, pick up Outwitting and start reading the chapter there. In 30 minutes you will know all that you need to know.

Of course if you want to have a Doctorate in any of the subjects and you have months to study Resume writing, than get yourself one of those 500 pagers. However as my good friend is saying, "you have to learn how to walk before you get to run". This is the book that will WALK YOU through the process at a speed of running.

3 out of 5 stars OK I read most of this book and .......2005-11-02

Well if you have something really going for you, this is a good book. If you have had a hard life like mine with few resources this book will depress you. However I don't think you have fallen to my depths, thus the three stars. The only degree needed to write this book is a degree of common sense, and if you have that, ha you don't need this book, because you already know, it is not what you know, it is who you know. On the other hand if you have been in college most of your life, you really need to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Outwitting.... Not Really... But a helpful roadmap.......2005-05-15

Outwitting the Job Market provides a solid fundamental approach to the job search. It covers most of the core elements such as resumes, networking, interviewing and negotiating. However, in today's market you need a compelling business case to convince companies to create positions for you. In your interviews you need to be able to quantify the Return on Investment (ROI) that you bring to the table so interviewers want to hire you. This is where this book falls a bit short. This book is a great resource for college graduates and entry level positions.

                      5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2004-06-30

In the past, having a job interview has been a fear-inspiring event. Not only have I been unable to sleep the night before an interview, but the following evening has also caused me insomnia: how was I supposed to answer that question? what were they looking for? are my chances for getting a job ruined?
This book has given me a new edge. Not only was the witty writing enjoyable to read, but I no longer look at interviews (and interviewers!) as obstacles on the windy road to employment. Now I have an understanding of what is being expected of me and of how I can frame myself in the most positive light when asked unusual questions.
Additionally, the sections in this guide dealing with the job-seeking blues have been particularly timely. To get my current position, I had to interview and apply to well over sixteen companies. The tips in this guide about networking and following up were what finally landed me a position as a property manager in a firm that I really enjoy.
                      To the author: Thank You!

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the job market beat you!.......2004-06-23

During the 1980s and 1990s, I read just about every job book published. Of all those books, What Color is Your Parachute? and Don't Send A Resume stand out in my memory. And now I can add a third.

When I first came across this book, I recognized Chandra Prasad's name because I had read her in the Wall Street Journal countless times.

This book was well-researched, and it helps the reader connect the dots. I've read books where the author admonishes the reader, "Make sure you research the company! Look them up in Value Line!" I've been on dozens of interviews and have found this advice completely worthless. You probably have, also. This made me think maybe I could write such drivel and sell a book.

Quite frankly, you won't impress an interviewer just because you can rattle off the names of the members of the Board of Directors or quote from the company's last annual report. If anything, you will just irritate this person--especially if you don't know other things that you should know.

Ms. Prasad took a different approach, telling us what kind of information to look for when researching a company. As I read this, I thought, "Yes! This is exactly what a job seeker needs to know!" And so it went throughout the book.

Ms. Prasad's practical advice takes you through the entire job search process, starting with a personal inventory--a step most people shortchange because they don't understand how to do it. And they pay for that shortcut with longer job searches and shorter stretches of employment. That consequence is true of each step in the job search process, actually. Which is why the approach of this book is so valuable to anybody who is in the job market. Most people let the job market beat them, but this book shows you how to beat the job market--just as its title implies. If you want to win this particular battle of wits, you need to be well-armed--and this book is a regular Howitzer.

If you hold a job, you are likely to be looking for one soon. If you are looking for a job, you will likely be looking again. If you are spending your time massaging your resume, you will be looking for a while. If you take the time to read and apply this book, you will shorten your job search and lengthen your subsequent employment.

                                                      Book Description

The shock waves from Russia that rocked global financial markets in the autumn of 1998 were proof that the process of transformation in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is in deep trouble. In this book, a team of high-ranking members from the CIS administration and economic experts analyses the market-oriented transformations as well as specific features of the market evolving in the 12 states. Using a wide range of statistical data, the authors deal with industry, agriculture, the military-industrial complex, the scientific and social sphere, finance and investment, market infrastructure, international trade, as well as other aspects. Based on the experience of reforms in other major economic regions, they develop a centrist concept for sustainable development and economic integration that offers the possibility of overcoming the current problems. Provides Western readers with an insider view of the present situation and a wealth of valuable statistical data.

THIS BOOK CONCERNS THE LIFE AND CAREER OF JENNIFER LOPEZ. IT HAS SOME NICE FACTS AND STORIES. I FOUND THIS TO BE AN INTERSTING READ. IT HAS SOME GOSSIP AND TIDBITS CONCERNING HER INSECURITIES ABOUT MEN, BEING ASHAMED OF HER FAMOUS BOOTY AND EVEN SOME BEDROOM SECRETS FROM HER FIRST HUSBAND. I LIKED THIS AND FOUND IT AN ENTERTAINING READ.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer and her RISE to the top..........2003-08-12

This book really teaches you the struggles to J.Lo's success. You realize a lot of things that happened to Jennifer through-out her life. But, most importantly, you see, that it hasn't been all peaches and cream for J.LO. She struggled to get were she is, and, i deeply admire her for that.

The book itself, is not a newbarry award winner, but it definetely deserves praises. It is highly enjoyable, and entertaining. It'll make you laugh, think, and learn to respect the struggles of another person, and what they have been through. Though when you see this book it might look kind-of goofy, "don't judge a book by it's cover"!

It is very thrilling to see the rise of a superstar, especially when you know all the sweat and tears that they have passed in order to be where they are know! And, unfortunately for the people that descriminate J.Lo just because they don't like her, she really is one of those artists. And it really shows with this book!

So..., go get "J.Lo's secreat climb to the top" because i highly recomend it!

1 out of 5 stars I knew what I was getting in to..........2003-07-25

I knew that I would be buying a book of complete worthlessness but seeing as I am a HUGE fan, I didn't care. Its just another piece of fanfanalia.

The book is a compilation of quotes from Bennifer, their family members and "sources" quoted from National Enquirer and Star past articles. Its hilarious how they bascially meld her life story with inadvertant quotes from past interviews and complete untruths from said "sources".

There are some grainy b/w photos in the middle for your enjoyment, but contrary to what the title claims, you do not learn the secrets to her success.

                                                      Darn.

                                                      Book Description

Where The Twenties Weren't Roaring describes life from 1926 to 1929, away from the "boom times" taking place in the cities. It reflects memories of the author, written through her eyes as an interested, observant child participating in the daily business of life, but too young and inexperienced to bear any responsibility.

She relates how it felt to ride across the country in a touring car before the national highway system was developed. She depicts the eating, sleeping and sanitary accommodations available then.

She tells of work activities such as worming tobacco, drying apples, milking, and hunting, and of such social activities as box suppers, a cemetery cleaning off, Sunday school and Camp Meeting.

These experiences take place in Lyon County, Kentucky; however, folks from many rural areas will find themselves on familiar ground.

This is an enjoyable walk down memory land for anyone acquainted with rural America in the 1920s...or anyone who yearns for a simpler world. Catherine draws loving and respectful pictures about a time that is so very different from our current stressful situation. A gentle book ...rather like a cup of hot cocoa and a friend when you're feeling lonesome.

4 out of 5 stars Where the Twentys wern't Roraring.......2001-11-07

This book is a fine, easy read. Catherine's ability to describe an era so that I can recall vividly the feel of it is outstanding. This is the type of book that tells it like it was, and could be an eye-opener for those born into the post-WWII era.

This book does not have a plot as such, but rather describes in vivid, real terms what it was like to live in the early days of the automobile: lacking indoor plumbing, cooking your own meals alongside the road when traveling, etc.
