Not all legal and financial transactions require lawyers and fancy contracts. Nolo Press's 101 Law Forms for Personal Use offers--you guessed it--101 standard legal forms for everything from estate planning to getting rid of pesky telemarketers. Written by attorneys Robin Leonard and Ralph Warner with the assistance of Nolo Press's editorial staff, these contracts are clear and well defined, written in simple, straightforward language. Along with the forms, which come in tear-out sheets as well as on an accompanying Windows-compatible disk, each section also offers clear, step-by-step procedures that are associated with each event or transaction. For example, the section on estate planning also includes beneficiary worksheets, three different types of wills, and an explanation of what procedures must be carried out for your will to be legally valid. Whether you are renting an apartment, selling your car, or simply working out a budget, 101 Law Forms for Personal Use will help ensure your transaction is simple, legal, and trouble-free.

    Book Description

Whether you're selling a car, remodeling a kitchen or hiring child care, you need to look out for your time and interests -- not to mention your money. "Putting it in writing" helps you protect your rights and avoid misunderstandings, headaches and potential lawsuits.

101 Law Forms for Personal Use gives you plain-English, step-by-step instructions and all the forms you'll need to cover the legal issues you're most likely to face every day.

Available as tear-outs and on CD-ROM, the forms include:

It was recomended, but did not cover the area i need. Not the books fault.

5 out of 5 stars Another quality title from Nolo that is worth every penny.......2007-04-05

Nolo Press was founded on the principle that not all legal transactions require retention of a lawyer. Many straightforward documents can be drafted and completed with the aid of a Nolo title sich as 101 Law Forms for Personal Use. This book, co-authored by attorneys, is divided into chapters on childcare and elder care, estate planning, will execution, landlord/tenant documents, financial documents, home ownership, personal property sales and rentals, home repair, living agreements, personal finances, consumer rights, and legal disputes. The forms are available in tear-out form and in a rich text format on CD-ROM. The rich text forms are perfect for editing and modification--one can delete and add clauses as necessary to customize the forms. I use this reference monthly for rental agreements, to draft complaint letters, and personal financial and consumer transactions. The language on the forms is simple and to-the-point.

This book is a steal at the cover price of $29.99, and Amazon regularly offers it at 30% off. Don't waste your time with software packages from the office supply store. Buy this quality product from a 35-year-plus leader in legal self-help advice. You stand to save hundreds or thousands of dollars in legal fees by doing this groundwork yourself. Nolo is quick to point out when situations get too complex for their simple forms, so be sure to heed the book's advice about turning to a lawyer if your situation warrants attention beyond the scope of the book.

These are simple law forms, and Nolo offers books which go into more detail on subjects such as landlord/tenant agreements and wills. While everyone should have this reference item in the home library, if you are planning to seriously set up your estate and trusts, or work part-time as a landlord, you should pick up one of the titles that goes into more depth on those specific subjects.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Title.......2003-07-04

This book is fantastic. There is a wealth of useful forms for everything you can imagine. I recieved this book as a gift and though that it would just take up space on my bookshelf. Ironically it has been the most referred to and used book I have ever owned. I have used the book to set up a power of attorney, prepare a tenants notice to move out, demand the return of a security deposit, complete a loan comparison worksheet, and to sell my dog. This book provides the forms and the explanation to do eveything I mentioned as well as a ton of other common transactions. It has saved me hundreds of dollars and I beleive that anyone who buys this book will cover the cost of the book within three months by making use of the forms and instructions provided.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for an intelligent frugal like myself.......2003-07-03

This book was terrific. If you have half a brain and like to save money this book is a must have. It contians almost every essentail form that you will need and it explians what they are and how to use them in a clear and concise way that even my nine year old niece could understand. And I guarantee that you will rely on this thing at least once a year for the rest of your life it is just that useful.

5 out of 5 stars 101 LAW FORMS FOR PERSONAL USE.......2000-05-16

I PERSONALLY FOUND THE BOOK TO BE VERY USEFUL AND INFORMATIVE. IT WAS EASY TO USE AND IT WILL ALLOW ANYONE, YES EVEN SOME ONE WHO HAS NEVER WRITTEN A LEGAL DOCUMENT BEFORE, TO MAKE THERE OWN IN NO TIME AT ALL. i WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO BE A DEST REFERENCE FOR LEGAL SECRETARIES JUST STARTING OUT AND TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS A DOCUMENT AND WOULD LIKE TO DO IT THERE SELF.

4 out of 5 stars Made Easy For Whom?.......2007-02-23

This book has a few problems and I still recommend that you buy it. The first problem is that it uses the words "made easy". That would be true if you already have knowledge of Chinese herbs and treatments. Next is it talks about the 300+ photographs. Ok, these photographs do indeed exist, but they are all black and white, of poor quality, and are thumbnail photos. Next we have the fact that this book has a beautiful cover. That is that last beautiful thing you will see. Inside the book is nothing more than typewriter mimeograph machine style notes like a professor would use as a syllabus in a college course... a college course in 1950! I expected so much more. Now on the the factual content. It is good. The price for the book is too high, even on sale, because of the lack of quality. But does it cover the information needed to pass the California Board? Some say so. If you are only going to buy one book on Chinese Herbs DO NOT buy this one. If you are going to buy 3-4 other better books, then buy this one, too. Shame on the publisher for doing such a diservice to Dr. Maoshing Ni.

        Book Description

Nearly everyone is inspired by a great idea--the trick is to protect your brainchild! Filled with valuable information, this title explains what a patent is; why you might need one; what the difference is between patents and trademarks; how to draft specifications and drawings, and how to work through the patent process from writing your application to the licensing of your patent rights. However, The Complete Patent Kit does not stop there.

Going beyond just the patent process, it looks at issues concerning inventors both before and after filing a patent application, such as:

        --Invention documentation

        --Invention evaluation--will it sell?

        --International concerns

--Ownership, licensing and assignment of your patent

--Use and maintenance of your patent

With checklists for the entire process, handy reference charts for quick answers and easy-to-use forms, this is the book for every inventor.

This book began life as the text of seventh annual Institute of Economic Affairs Hayek Memorial Lecture given by Professor Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth in June 1998.

Dr. Sacks approach was based on a debate that Hayek had proposed in 1978 on the question of "was socialism a mistake". Although the debate never took place, Hayek prepared for it by writing a manuscript which ultimately saw the light of day as "The Fatal Conceit".

Beginning from the thesis that the Fatal Conceit's essential premise eas that for the free market or extended order to emerge, a certain kind of morality needed to emerge also. He develops his argument through a scholarly exegesis beforeutimately arriving at a conclusion that the free market has gone too far such that in effect it has become it's own morality and morals/ethics have been subordinated.

This conclusion is challenged by the the three commentators who were asked to write in response due to the reception received by the lecture. Dr. Sacks was also asked to write a rejoinder.

Norman Barry contends, if I understand him correctly, that markets bring about change and that morality must be adaptive and flexible. Thus the issue is not one of no morality but is one of the changing rules which come about ultimately because markets do not have a life of their own. They a rise through the interaction of people in a social process.

Robert Davidson looks at the role of traditions in religion and the necessity to test them against the reality of the world. In another illuminating passage he refers to the division of labor within society and argues that theologians have a role in giving people a vision of hope.

Michael Novak, takes a different approach by looking at what the world owes to Judaism, articulating the notion that it, as Christianity, is not a monolithic tradition.

In his rejoinder, Dr. Sacks takes the opportunity to clarify his position. He argues that he is not against markets, per se, but that he is against the extension of markets into all aspects of life. He fears that such extension will result in social disaster and makes the case that markets and the free society can only succeed within a strong moral framework.

The lecture was described as stimulating. After reading this collection there is clearly much food for thought. In this excellent little book there is much for all of us to think about.

                          Highly commended for everyone.

I work for a Southern California-based property management firm/home builder and we have been looking for a property tax guide for awhile now. I've attended property tax seminars and have not been able to find a good comprehensive guide to help me through my various questions on the subject. Most property tax manuals, I have found, are filled with the complex California tax code or are too broad in their attempt to cover the large area of property tax. With the Property Tax California Style reference book, I believe we have found what we have been looking for.

James Bone, the author, apparently wrote this book with the non-property tax professional in mind. The chapters are laid out in an easy to understand format. The sections covering the various areas are explained very well. For example, we specifically wanted to find out what type of property tax exemptions exist in California and by quickly looking in the table of contents, we found the chapter covering the area.

For a non-property tax professional this book covers all areas of property tax from real estate base year calculations to personal property tax issues. The book can also be useful as a quick reference guide for a property tax professional who wants to polish up on a specific area that they are not too familiar with. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about property taxes in California.

                                Book Description

This groundbreaking biography of a brilliant but disturbed performer explores the paradox of the man and the artist. Based on more than 100 interviews, this intelligent profile explores Morrison's roots; the hard times he went through in London, New York, and Boston; the making of his seminal albums Moondance and Astral Weeks; and the disastrous business arrangements that left Morrison hungry and penniless while his songs were topping the charts. Detailed are the breakdown of Morrison's marriage, the creative drought that followed, and his triumphant reemergence. In addition, this biography attempts to explain the forbidding aspects of Morrison's persona, such as paranoia, hard drinking, misanthropy, as well as why, in the words of his one-time singing partner Linda Gail Lewis, Morrison's music "brings happiness to other people, not him." Also included is a Van Morrision sessionography that spans 1964 to 2001.

I'm a long time fan and was well aware that Van Morrison is not a very likeable individual. However, this bio seemed a compilation of public information about Van Morrison with nothing really revealing about the man who has written such great music. There's no way to reconcile the despicable person presented in this bio with a guy who writes the kind of great, humanistic songs that fill the Van Morrison portfolio. Unfortunately, Van isn't talking and given his apparent desire to paint a distorted picture of his past (one of the few good revelations in the book), we'll probably never know the real person.

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at the Van and his madness.......2007-01-23

This is the most complete bio of Van I've read to date, and while I wish it would focus more on the music rather than the man's disdain of fame and celebrity, it's still a fascinating read into the life of a very private man. Sometimes I felt that the interviews went on too long and I just wanted to say, "Okay, we get it, he's a difficult person but get on with it!" Still it's worth the read and apparently there aren't that many great new biographies about Van, so give it a chance.

                                4 out of 5 stars A Biography, Not A Hagiography.......2006-03-24

First of all, one has to be really interested in the life and the music of Van Morrison to want to read a tome of this heft. Morrison himself may wonder why anyone wants to know anything about him beyond what they hear on CD or on stage. Well, maybe its because his biggest fans want to know just what the source of all his talent is. After all, Morrison is far from a one hit wonder and a one trick pony. His ability to make quality music in so many different genres is a source of wonder to us all!
After I read the book, I read the reviews. Reading the reviews reminded me of how differently any given sentence or phrase can be interpreted, depending on the reader's angle. Some fans will brook no criticism of their idol, others are willing to read between the lines and to accept that because their idol is human, he is as likely to have flaws like the rest of us do. The fair-minded reader should remember that this is a biography, not a hagiography. It's certainly not a whitewash, but its not a hatchet job, either.
There is a wealth of information in Can You Feel The Silence, both about Morrison himself, and about his music. It covers the good times and the bad times and the development of his unique musical talent from his youth to the present century. Clearly, Van Morrison follows his own muse, but its up to the reader to digest the information and come to his/her own conclusions. The book doesn't purport to be the last word, but author Heylin tries to be as thorough as possible. I personally don't agree with Heylin's assessment of some of Morrison's work, particularly some of his later albums, but that just reflects our differences in musical taste.
So Van Morrison is said to be difficult. Heylin isn't the first to say it and he won't be the last. Lots of artists are said to be difficult. He is said to interview poorly. I have read two fine interviews in the English music press within the last year in which Morrison was quite forthcoming. Maybe those interviews that didn't work out were those in which he was asked asinine questions. Heylin seems at times to be on the side of those who bash Morrison as rude and unprofessional, but if you read closely, he is actually more balanced.
As for the music, if you pick 100 Van Morrison fans and ask them to write down their 10 favorite Morrison albums, you are likely to have not a single matching list. So I like Down the Road, Back on Top, and The Crying Game; Heylin thinks they are weak and unfocused. Heylin seems to like the You Win Again collaboration with Linda Gayle Lewis, I thought it stunk. But even though I don't always agree with him, reading this book helps me to hear Morrison's music with new ears. Whatever your view, this book is loaded with interesting stories about the how Van's albums were made. And you will find out why Moondance has not yet been remastered.
I recommend Can You Feel the Silence to anyone vitally interested in the life and music of Van Morrison. I find the listing of key people in Morrison's career and the sessionography following the epilogue particularly useful. If you find yourself dissatisfied with Heylin's portrayal, then there are other books on him available, but none of this scope.

4 out of 5 stars A bit flawed but easily the best Van Morrison biography so far.......2005-12-28

There aren't many Van Morrison biographies out there, and most of them rely on musical analysis as attempts to flesh out Morrison's life are often hindered by Morrison himself. This book falls a bit short, but it's still the best biography on Morrison to date.

People who call it a hatchet job are overreacting. Heylin isn't out to get Morrison, but he can't avoid the negative stories (given here in an 'oral history' format). This is a subject who has alienated so many important figures in his professional and personal life, and if Heylin were to cut back on the unflattering anecdotes, you wouldn't understand why Morrison has lost so many great collaborators over the years and how some of his closest relationships have fallen apart (and in return, impacted his work). In fact, one of the most interesting things about this book is how it digs deep into Morrison's written and recorded output, looking at songs he hasn't even released, and ties them with Morrison's own experiences. A few reviewers criticized Heylin for dismissing Morrison's opinions, but to be fair, Heylin still includes Morrison's take on his own work, often unedited; taken from numerous interviews, these passages show an artist who is often unwilling to talk about his work and even contradicts himself in different interviews.

This brings me to the next point: there is actually PLENTY of musical analysis. There's definitely a lot less than other Morrison books, but again, those books relied on musical analysis and don't come close to collecting the amount of research Heylin has presented here. In fact, this book actually does a great job explaining how certain albums came together.

More importantly, this book debunks numerous myths surrounding Morrison. Some of this is old news; for example, Richard Davis and others have been very upfront that "Astral Weeks" was a collaborative effort with little guidance from Morrison, even though he did write the songs. However, Heylin also argues that the sessions for "Hard Nose The Highway" were actually some of Morrison's most productive (often considered his weakest album, Heylin argues that this is a result of poor song selection, not a lack of inspiration as many critics have argued). He also points out that the "three-year drought" was actually much shorter and that plenty of significant recordings were made during that time - unfortunately it would take 20 years to release them. While the later chapters create a less flattering picture of the man's personality, they also command a complete re-evaluation of his 80's output, finding great merit in songs like 'Summertime In England' and albums like "No Guru..." and even "Down The Road." In fact, the chapter covering "Down The Road" is the biggest eye-opener; even though some information was reportedly censored (at the time of publication, Morrison was involved in a lawsuit, and the case's details had to be dropped), there is still a wealth of new information regarding the circumstances surrounding "Down The Road" and what could've been a "return to form."

One reviewer made a crucial point: we still don't understand how a complete grouch can make such transcendant, beautiful music. Heylin sort of tries, and one could theoretically connect the dots - Morrison's restless but capricious spiritual quest offers some hints, as does Morrison's visits to his own homeland leading up to his eventual return - but this should've been explored a bit more.

You're not going to find a Morrison bio with this much research. Yeah, Heylin's tone can be a bit curmudgeonly sometimes, but it suits the story.

                                1 out of 5 stars A hatchet job.......2005-05-11

I have been a Van the man fan for over 30 years, so I was looking forward to another biography of him.Alas, I was disappointed.Heylin does not disguise his hostility to Morrison. This is not the way to write an informative biography.Much of the book consists of comments from band members about recording sessions and negative comments on Morrison's personality. He apparently is no angel, but to the fans it is the music that counts. Heylin gives scant attention to the music. There is no attempt to convey the joy this music brings to many people.Biographical information is in short supply. For example, I could find no mention that Morrison has been awarded two honorary doctorates from Irish universities.Like other biographers, Heylin is all at sea when he tries to explain Morrison's personality. He should have consulted an astrologer for a chart reading. Morrison's chart shows insights into his personality. A major feature is the conjunction of the Moon, Mars and Uranus.Moon conjunct Mars indicates intense aggressive energy. The mother figure may have been both dominating and overpowering, as well as out of control and often angry. The Moon conjunct Uranus shows a degree of instability in early emotional conditions and a desire to be independent in the emotional life. Intuition is strong, like a direct powerline to an inspirational source of knowledge.Mars conjunct Uranus indicates a charged up will: excitable and rebellious.Mars is square to Jupiter, giving a tendency to be excessive in terms of externalizing force and expressing anger or pursuing goals.More insights are gained by a full analysis of his chart.Heylin reveals himself in the acknowledgements section when he calls himself 'this not so humble writer.'The publisher must also take some of the blame for such a biased and unenlightening book. Forget the wannabes, just enjoy great music from Van the man.

                                Book Description

"I spin a roll of toilet paper—hard, and the paper unwinds to the floor. Does it make a noise as it unfurls? As it hits the floor? When ice cream melts and drips on my sleeve does it make a noise? Or will it only make a noise if it drips onto a hard surface, like the ground, rather than on my soft sleeve? ...They tell me that escaping air makes a sound. How? When?"

With these seemingly simple questions, Bonnie Poitras Tucker introduces us to "the feel of silence." Tucker, profoundly deaf since infancy, became an expert lipreader who never learned sign language and did not meet another deaf person until her mid-thirties. Her compelling story propels the reader through an odyssey of motions—the tension inherent in a battle against the odds.

This intimate memoir is interlaced with moving examples of the ironies and trials of accommodating a hearing world. After spending 17 years as a full-time wife and mother, Tucker embarked on a "second life," divorced, with several children to support. Alternately angry and sad, funny and introspective, Tucker explains how she sometimes "bluffed" instead of announcing her deafness.

Unable to read lips in the dark, candle-lit restaurants, or the turn of dusk left Tucker without a means of communication, virtually paralyzed. Daily frustration resulted from the practicalities of responding to a crying child, airplane announcements, repairmen knocking at the door, a ringing telephone, and following the rapid-fire debates that take place in the classroom and the courtroom.

Opposed to the "Deaf is Dandy" movement, Tucker successfully strategized her way through college, dating, motherhood, and law school, and went on to become a corporate litigator, a law professor, and an expert in several areas of the law, including disability rights.

5 out of 5 stars Accepting oneself as less than perfect.......2004-07-22

I found this book to be extremely powerful. Bonnie wholely admits to being in denial about her deafness til she was 38. At first I found this disturbing as she KNEW she was deaf, but claimed to be in denial. Three months AFTER I read the book it finally hit me what she was saying!!! She was not in denial about her deafness, she was in denial about the fact that her deafness made her different from other people, AND she was in denial that it impacted on her life! This was a huge lesson to me, because I was (then) doing the EXACT same thing!! I blamed a madrid of other "things" that affected my life EXCEPT for my hearing loss! What a relief it was to be able to accept the truth and get on with my life, and go forward! I now accept and do know that it is just a part of me that I have to live with every day!!! I must constantly educate others about it, and I am always appreciative of those who make the extra efforts to accommodate me and keep me informed on what is going on around me.

This book was very liberating for me and helped me tremendously! Bonnie is one of the very few deaf authors that addresses the implications that hearing loss has on one's own life, and those people directly around you.

4 out of 5 stars Miscataloged but worth reading.......2001-08-29

I ran into this book by accident looking for a book about law. (LOC cataloged it in the Dewey system as 340.092, near books like Legal Realism at Yale.) It's actually the autobiography of Bonnie Poitras Tucker, born (so far as anyone can tell) totally deaf but who eventually became a lawyer and a law school professor. Tucker's strength is in communicating the burden of being deaf even for a gifted lip reader. I must say that I never thought about how terrifying darkness must be for the deaf, how much it would hurt to be thought rude because one couldn't hear everyday sounds or conversation, or even how a moustache might completely frustrate a lip reader. Tucker's reluctance to tell others about her handicap undoubtedly made some periods of her life more difficult than they might have been otherwise, but it takes little imagination for the reader to sympathize with her desire to be "normal." Curiously, although Tucker, is an expert on the law of disabilities, her book does not address legal issues in any rigorous way. For her, it is a self-evident truth that a theater owner should provide a seat for her interpreter at no charge. Likewise, the brief attempt she makes at discussing her religious beliefs (basically none) is more simplistic than one would expect from a law school teacher. Nevertheless, the book is worth reading. As a teacher who has had a number of deaf students over the years, I will certainly think twice before regrowing my moustache.

5 out of 5 stars Gratitude, compassion and frustration.......2001-03-18

I would have never heard of this book if not for a dear friend's recommendation - whose 15-year old daughter has been deaf since birth. And I am as profoundly grateful to my friend Anna Marie, as I am to Bonnie Tucker, the author - for a lesson in gratitude. compassion and frustration . . .

All of us, the hearing - will learn of gratitude for the "given" of the sense of hearing. We will add to our repertoire of our feelings a very special variation of compassion - for one like Bonnie - full of zest and energy in her approach to life - who definitely does not want pity.

We will learn of the aspects of frustration which our hearing world may not conceive of. Why not learn of this? Why not absorb some of the unique feelings which none of us ever thought of, in the situations none of us ever has found himself/herself?

You, the psychologists, might add to your lists of therapeutic data - this very intelligent woman's pointers and leads - how and when to help the deaf . . .

As the deaf are not really deaf - witness Beethoven and his most significant output as a composer in the late years of life, when, after becoming deaf, his hearing switched inward, into the inner world of sound - after all we all have an inner ear.

So does Bonnie Tucker and she has proven it with her astounding life and career as a mom and an attorney. Hurrah to the victor!

I found this book to be upsetting and depressing. All of her life, it seems the author never accepted the fact that she was deaf and tried "passing" as hearing for her entire life! Although I am not deaf and do not pretend to know what it is like to be deaf, I felt that she made her life so much more of a struggle by shunning the Deaf Community. She refused to sign and tried to live as a hearing person. This book left me with a feeling of overwhelming sadness for all that this woman has missed in her life as a result of not accepting her deafness and at least trying to be a part of both the hearing and the deaf communities.

4 out of 5 stars This is a true saga of a woman's courage and endurance........1997-05-04

The account of a courageous woman who has been deaf since at least age two. Determined to communicate, she taught herself lip reading and speech. Her life has been a journey to defy all obstacles that stood in the path of her being totally involved in the hearing world. She refused to accept permanent set backs and plunged ahead with a strength of determination seldom seen in any human being. Although she had a lifetime to become adept at deafness, she presents as a role model for all of us whether two years deaf as I am, or deaf from birth. She is not an experienced story teller but her life is rich in adventure. It will evoke a plethora of emotions from all readers and may spark the debate about communication styles for deaf children. I would reccommend this book to parents of deaf children and to deaf adults
