Lots of mini-cases; Easy to read.......2007-09-28
Only estate book I've seen written in an easy-to-read, mini-case-study format. Very practical and thought-provoking advice. Tends to focus on little worst-case scenarios in an attempt to get people to plan properly for all the things that can go wrong in an estate.
For what it's worth, I thought the book was generally best-suited for estates with $100,000 to about $2,000,000 in assets. Don't get me wrong, there's something in here for all estate sizes - especially for people just starting the process of developing a plan. However, don't buy this book looking for technical discussions of advanced tax-minimizing strategies. If you or your clients have estates over this $2MM mark, this book can be a great thought-provoker, but some of the advice isn't really suitable for larger estates.
Do right by your kids...get this book.......2007-03-15
I have several estate planning books...the "how to" type and they are great. This is the book you need to read before you start filling in the blanks. I wish my parents had read this book. It would have saved my family relationships. This book gives you the basic information you need before drawing up your trust. Protect your beneficiaries and prevent family conflict by reading this book!
So good I bought 4 extra copies for friends.......2007-01-19
Estate planning is so important if you don't want your son in law running off with half your estate in the event of your kid's divorce. This book was a great asset to me ... and a real eyeopener as to what can happen at the reading of your will if you haven't equalized everything. the author even gives you his phone number that readers can call and ask questions free. The book is so good I bought 4 extra copies for friends.
Ditto of "janimac's on April 11, 2006".......2006-12-28
As strange as this may sound, my review is identical to janimac's on April 11, 2006 (except I merely *told* 3 friends about it).
The answer to my prayers.......2006-04-12
What a relief!!! I finally found a book that would help me help my parent plan their estate! Thank you so much for your wonderful, easy to read book. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down! This book has practical, real world examples of inheritance planning issues and considers the "human" side of inheritances. It's a must read if you need to do estate planning. I just came back and bought three copies to give to my friends. It's the best gift I could possibly give them!

From the supplier: Succession planning should take into consideration the level of the company's complexity in the future. The intense appetite nowadays for corporate growth is driving complexity that the next generation of CEOs may not be able to handle, especially those whose skills are aligned with present and not future realities. The succeeding CEOs will have to deal with multiplying products and technologies, increased segmentation across industries, greater numbers of customer groups, additional channels across and within industries, and global expansion. A company can prepare itself for the greater complexity that results from its sustained growth through one of several methods. They should be adjusted according to the unique culture and marketplace position of the company. These approaches are discussed.

Fit to read........2005-10-26
This was a good read. As a busy professional, it's easy to forget to incorporate the healthy things into life because "busy" just seems to take over. This book not only offers ways to "fit" them in, but I read it months ago and the tips have stuck with me.
pre-101 level.......2005-10-21
if information like "studies suggest exercising helps you live longer and better" is new and helpful to you, then this book is as good as any. I only made through the first half of this before giving up as a waste of time, so I stand open to correction from somone that struggled through the entire thing, but there was simply no there there. No new insights or interesting research studies in this. I could have written this book, and I have no expertise whatsoever in this field.
BRILLIANT!.......2004-10-12
Fit To Lead is an absolute must-read. It brings together a synergistic blend of data and concepts that are substantiated by genuine research data (not just "a new idea that ought to sell"). The concept is laid out in a manner that is doable for even the busiest executive. It is informative, motivational, and right to the point (another plus for busy people).
Great Title--Timely Subject!.......2004-07-12
The title may be just the positive suggestion to establish some necessary life extending and enhancing strategies. Well written, organized and researched without being tedious, it's a great book to loan out or give to the people you care about.

Book Description
An enoteca is more than just a place to have a quick glass of wine and a light meal or snack. It’s a place to meet friends and relax in an inviting atmosphere. With more and more travelers returning with fond memories of these charming Italian hangouts, enoteche are already becoming a hot trend. Find out about the evolution of wine bars in Italy from renowned chef, author, and teacher Joyce Goldstein and discover the origins of the light, simply prepared cuisine. Each mouthwatering recipe and the part it plays in the enoteche lifestyle is described in detail, accompanied by wine recommendations for each course and stunning color photography evoking the lively spirit of these traditional venues. From succulent seafood and pasta dishes to focaccia and fritters-and even sinfully delicious dolci-anyone can enjoy the enoteca experience at home.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, Inexpensive source for Italian Entertaining.......2005-01-09
`Enoteca' by noted Mediterranean culinary writer and teacher Joyce Goldstein is one of those rare books which rekindle one's interest in an area the reader believed has been almost totally burnt out by reading dozens of books on, for example, general and regional Italian cookery. The Enoteca is a Greek based word for an Italian wine bar similar to the Spanish tapas bar and the Greek and Turkish meze bars. There is a strong similarity between an osterie, an older term, and the Enoteca, as both serve wine and neither have a full trattoria style menu. The Enoteca may even not have any tables, but it will most certainly have a wide variety of wines and a selection of foods which may be made on the premises but which may as likely be brought in from nearby food stores and restaurante or trattoria kitchens. The best American model I know of is Mario Batali's Babbo `restaurant and Enoteca', where the emphasis on wine selections supported by partner Joe Bastianich supports the dual function for this establishment.
The fact that while the term Enoteca may be old, it has been enthusiastically adapted by the Italian culinary establishment which has gone so far as to codify the requirements which allow a business to label itself an `Enoteca'. These requirements are largely based on the bar's stocking a large number and variety of Italian wines, plus a sizable stock of French and other foreign wines. The Enoteca model seems to be primarily a northern Italian thing, with strong exemplars in Venice and Milan. One of the most attractive things about this book is the number of recipes for northern Italian dishes that mimic much more famous southern dishes such as the pizza and the Calzone.
The official model for an Enoteca does not require that the servers are qualified as master sommeliers, but they must be very well informed about wine and how their wines can be paired with food. Ms. Goldstein's co-author of this book is her son, Evan Goldstein, who is a master sommelier and who supplies all the wine to food pairings in the book. As I know virtually nothing about wine, the only evaluation I can give of these offerings is that they are better than most, in that they define both the characteristics of the wine which will go well with the dish, then recommend specific wine labels, generally at least two different wines, often from two different continents. This is about as good a source of wine to food pairings I have seen in a cookbook.
I almost have a sense that unlike the Spanish and Greek cuisine centers cited above, the Italian wine bar menu items have been lost in the great forest of information published about Italian cuisine. To be sure, almost all recipes in this book can be found in other major works from authorities such as Marcella Hazan and Giuliano Bugialli, but this particular collection of recipes just seems to come alive as they are presented to all satisfy a single purpose, being the most interesting finger food can be had to eat with a glass of wine.
The leading chapter points out the similarities between the Italian and the Spanish `bar food', as the subject here is fritters and frittatas, comparable to fried empanadas and the potato tortilla. Many other Italian cookbooks have lots of recipes on frittatas, but the croquettes seem to be much less easy to find.
The second chapter is on savory pastries and breads featuring `pizza rustica', green pies, crostinis, focaccias, and an especially interesting flatbread from Romagna. These northern Italian specialities are all strong analogues to the southern Italian specialities as well as the Mexican flour tortilla.
The third chapter on pastas and grains features fresh pasta and baked pasta dishes that are very easy to bake in advance and dish out portion by portion. So, lots of gratins and casseroles here. If you happen to be as fond of gratins as I am, you are almost certain to have the same warm reaction to this book.
The next chapter on fish concentrates on recipes for cold salads and gratins made with fish, especially shrimp, tuna, baccala, trout, clams and mussels.
The next chapter on meat and poultry again concentrates on make ahead dishes such as stews and braises or carpaccios (raw meats).
The vegetable chapter has some nice little discoveries, featuring a mashed potato pie from Apulia. Other dishes, again, are cold salads or make ahead casseroles, stews, and gratins. One of the rare sautes is here, with a dish of sautéed mushrooms. I have never heard of Hobbits in Italy, but I am sure they would love to find this dish.
It is not surprising to find a chapter devoted to cheeses, as this is a natural accompaniment to wine. Aside from the ten (10) recipes, this chapter features a thumbnail guide to Italian cheeses.
There are only four (4) recipes for sweets, which is not surprising as the conventional wisdom on Italian food culture is that baked desserts are not a big thing. They are largely an excuse for Noni to break out the vin santo in the afternoon. For certain, the author's description of Enotecas indicates that they will do virtually no baking on the premises, as most of them will not even have a pizza oven.
The book includes an excellent little bibliography, including the volume from Carol Field, `Italy in Small Bites' which most closely matches the cuisine in this book.
Almost all of the recipes in the book were supplied by Italian Enoteca owners, developed by the excellent cookbook writing of Ms. Goldstein who never fails to please me with her careful working of classic recipes.
This extremely attractive, very reasonably priced book is a great find for planning food and wine for a party. How can you possibly go wrong with both authentic recipes and expert wine picks.
best of the best.......2003-10-25
I love this book, good recipes and easy to make, and it's so nice to have the correct wines already chosen, takes the stress off me. 2 yums up!
nothing special.......2002-05-03
Just another book on cooking and the Italian way of life.
Very predictable.
Simple & Elegant.......2001-07-28
This is the trend we are heading into next, alot more simple fares and menus built around wine lists without being too stuffy.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Summary of Great Investors.......2003-03-15
This is a great guide to investing, in my opinion. The author compiles profiles of the great practitioners of investing and distills their philosophies. Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Peter Lynch, John Neff, Benjamin Graham, and Philip Fisher are the thinkers he's tapped for his book, and he captures the essence very well.
Of course the author can't give you and exact how-to of investing. Much of it is business sense that can't be taught. However, with this as a guide, any person with business sense can succeed.
Also, one reviewer's comment that "the value of a company isn't SOLELY determined by fundamentals, but by investor PERCEPTION of those fundamentals, in addition to other factors" is completely wrong. Obviously you haven't been paying attention to the lessons of the great investors. A business has an intrinsic value regardless of market price. Market price is merely a vote of the value, not the value itself.
Be sure to read Chapter 8, "The Valuegrowth Investor," and Chapter 9, "The Analysis of Industries."
A copy of his "Key Principles of Buffett's and Munger's Approach" (pg 228) is going right above my desk.
Helpful guide to fundamental analysis, but..........2002-09-23
In order to make money in stocks, you need to know how Wall Street works.
There are 2 schools of thought: technical analysis--the study of market action (price and volume), and fundamental analysis--the attempt to determine of the "intrinsic value" of a security (stock, bond, etc). This book is devoted to the various methods of fundamental analysis for stocks, which is the major approach to security selection on Wall Street.
The crucial point that you won't find in most books--there is no distinction between growth and value investing. Any intelligent investor wants to buy a business that has good (not necessarily great) growth prospects, but shouldn't be willing to pay any absurd price for it. An intelligent investor wants either value or growth at reasonable prices. Keeping this in mind may have helped you avoid many internet stocks when they were trading at absurd levels.
I thought the author did a very good job illustrating the techniques of various successful fundamentalists. Of course, it would take practice and further study to implement these methods.
I'd recommend Fundamental Analysis by Ritche, and Financial Scheninagins, by Schlitt, to complement your study in fundamental analysis.
If the book stuck simply to describing fundamental analysis, I'd give it 5 stars. But it doesn't.
The author seems to show a total distain for technical analysis.
This bashing of an alternative method of market analysis decreases the educational content of the book.
The value of a company isn't SOLELY determined by fundamentals, but by investor PERCEPTION of those fundamentals, in addition to other factors. Much info can be learned about investor perceptions regarding a stock by looking at price action, volume, and indicators. But it takes practice to interpret it.
Often, price will decline BEFORE important fundamentals are released to the market. Anyone reading an Enron chart would have saved a significant amount of cash by selling BEFORE the fundamentals were released.
A successful trader needs to a) understand the market's perception of a stock b) understand how changes in the fundamentals will change investor perceptions c) decide whether to follow the crowd (follow the trend), or take the other side (fade the trend).
Read the book for its good explanation of fundamental analysis. Take the trash talk about technicians with a grain of salt. Both approaches can make money, and an intelligent investor will find knowledge about both essential.
Big Hat, No Cattle.......2002-04-27
This book talks a good game about showing a new, long term way of investing. Unfortunately, no real action - just talk.
The book does a decent overview of different schools of thought on investing from some leading do-ers - Lynch, Buffet, Graham, etc. However, the book spends its pages on this "overview" and fails to get at the "what to do to acheive" the Valuegrowth promises. I found this book to talk a lot about a new way to view the world of investing, but virtually silent on how you do it. No one would disagree with selecting companies with good management or strong product pipelines, but the path an individual investor can take to answer these questions was strangely absent.
If you want a book that reads like a college essay on "comparing and contrasting" the views of Lynch, Buffet, etc. this would be fine. You won't see a path to improved investing results, but you will get an overview.
If you are interested in "how" to achieve improved investment results, this book will do nothing to help - although that sure is the implication from its PR. Save your money and your time.
A pleasurable and fulfilling read!!!.......2002-04-04
I have read numerous books on the value approach to investing and I found this book to be the most complete and enjoyable to read. The book compares several value investors and provides insights into each of their investment approaches. What is unique about this book is that it consolidates all of the views presented in Part I of the book into one cohesive value investing approach in Part II. Comparing this book to others that talk about Warren Buffet, Benjamin Graham and others, I feel that this book got into the thought processes of the individuals better that any other book I have read on the subject. I am a business traveler and where ever I go I carry this book to use as a reference.

Book Description
Unemployment remains stubbornly high in the richest nations of the world, and large transnational corporations continually downsize. A few get richer, but many are wondering where they will find customers for their goods amid the growing impoverishment of many developing countries. This book touches on the problem by examining the issue of corporate social responsibility, arguing that it is both good for business and essential for future prosperity and stability. It presents the case for a worldwide agreement, or "planetary bargain," between the private and public sectors and looks at the implications of such an idea. The book includes case studies of international companies who have adopted socially responsible programs and analyzes research in this area over the past two decades.
Customer Reviews:
well-researched and stimulating.......1999-04-30
state of the art review and a strategy to continue how corporations should face the social challenges of the twenty first century, easy-to-read....
...a fascinating book..........1999-02-24
Demos will organise a workshop around the book..
Innovative and path-breaking for corporate executives.......1999-02-09
I greatly enjoyed this book. It provides pointers to where corporations will be going in the next millenium. Engaging corporations in all aspects of life, as the book argues, is essential to preserve living standards in the next 100 years.

Book Description
Captain Hornblower, after two hard years on blockade at Brest, has relinquished the helm of the Hotspur. He has no ship, only the promise of one. Meanwhile there are battles to be fought.
This reading of HORNBLOWER DURING THE CRISIS includes two other stories, "Hornblower's Temptation" and "The Last Encounter," all published after C.S. Forester's death in 1966.
"Because Forester died before completing this novel, the reader is left with a summary sketch and his own imagination for final details of the plot. For Forester devotees, this will not detract from the essential verve and dash of Hornblower's last chase." (The Christian Science Monitor)
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Friendship .......2006-09-09
This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.
The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.
Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.
After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.
Would've been a good novel but the best part wasn't written........2004-03-01
This novel picks up with Hornblower relinquishing command of the Hotspur and returning to London for a new command. As typical in a Forester novel, nothing ever goes as planned and action follows Hornblower on his way home from a supply ship. There are only about 150 pages of text in this story and what was missing in the story were what Hornblower did that lead to the eventual decisive Battle of Trafalgar. It was nice to see what Forester wrote anyway only because I like the genre and I like Forester's details and descriptions of being in the Service and living during that time. But this book wouldn't be good on its own.
Cleaning up Forester's Desk.......2004-02-27
Hornblower During the Crisis is apparently a couple of pieces of left over script that Forester hadn't finished when he died, and was later published. The first half deals with Hornblower's trip home to England as a passenger on a water hoy (a supply ship that brings water to ships of the line). The water how is such a dog that after several days of beating back and forth they are still where they began. When they finally do get a fair wind they are chased by a larger French brig and only by some of Hornblower's usual trickery and bravado do they turn the tables and escape. The battle is a little too unbelievable for me; it relies too much no surprise and a sleeping French crew, which I found beyond the realm of possible. Nevertheless our hero returns safely to England.
The second part of the book is another short story about how Hornblower was assigned to be some kind of spy in Spain to deliver fake messages ordering the Spanish fleet out to sea. It's more plausible, but a short story.
Despite its shortcomings, the detail of ships and sailing in the early 19th century make the Hornblower series must reading for any man who loves the sea.
good, but unfinished leaves you wanting more.......2004-02-06
like most of the reviews the book is unfinished, which I thought was unfortunate. i really love reading about HH. i find his thoughts and thought process intriguing and his outlook on others who are involved in his life. CS Forester really gives you a feel for this charactor and puts you in his mind.
"Hornblower During the Crisis" is only 117 pages. i enjoyed it and have read all of the novels up threw "Crisis". im reading in chronological order. so i was dissapointed for it to end so quick. it is your typical HH novel, he starts out sailing and then the frogs show up, HH comes up with an idea and ofcoures it works out for the better. ends up in england with some important papers from boney. he gets promoted to captain only if he goes on a spy mission he came up with, that is where the book ends. a shame, i really wanted to see HH as a spy.
"Hornblowers Temptation" - is the first short story. it comes after "Midshipmen Hornblower" although one review said it came after "Lieutentant Hornblower", the reason is because Mr.Bush is not on board and captian sawyer is still alive. good short story, i agree with some reviews that the character is not like the HH we know. he does things for his own conscious , and not for king, for county. also this mentions that they have gone to the west indies, but in "Lieutentaunt HH", he remarks to Bush how he has never seen some sort of fish which are only in the west indies. good short story, if u like HH series then you will like this, although we are not use to this softer side of Horry.
"The Last Encounter" - this makes no sense with the HH books. his wifes is named Barbara, who he loves and can't keep his eyes off of, his only child is named Richard and he likes wine or "port" as they call it. never the less is was an ok read. i think forester wrote this just for fun. the story is about a man who comes to the door and says he someone famous and dead. HH is like whatever, but helps him anyway. not bad, i didn't really like it because it didn't hold true to Maria and his 2 kids.
this is a decent book, i wish it was finished, it really leaves you dangling. the only regret is the price $15, which are the prices for completed books. we should pay half this since we are getting half a story.
The last book in the series..........2004-01-06
Or is it? The incomplete story, 'Hornblower During The Crisis' seems to be set just after 'Hornblower And The Hotspur'. The story was never finished and the ONE page of notes at the end DO tell you how the story turns out but doesn't have much in the way of details. It would of been nice to see a dozen pages or so of the author's notes.
The next two stories, 'Hornblower's Temptation'(which seems to be set after 'Lieutenant Hornblower') and 'The Last Encounter', which is the very last tale about him, are both short but complete. They show us a very interesting view of Hornblower's inner thought process when he was young and when he gets old.
So in a way it does end the series, but also shows him during earlier periods of his life.
Book Description
In this riveting narrative of family, betrayal, vengeance, and murder, Lillian Baptiste is willed back to her island home of Dominica to finally settle her past. Haunted by scandal and secrets, Lillian left Dominica when she was fourteen after discovering she was the daughter of Iris, the half-crazy woman whose life was told of in chanté mas songs sung during Carnival: Matilda Swinging and Bottle of Coke; songs about a village on a mountaintop and bones and bodies; songs about flying masquerades and a man who dropped dead. Lillian knew the songs well. And now she knows these songs -- and thus the history -- belong to her. After twenty years away, Lillian returns to face the demons of her past, and with the help of Teddy, the man she refused to love, she will find a way to heal.
Set partly in contemporary Washington, D.C., and partly in post-World War II Dominica, Unburnable weaves together West Indian history, African culture, and American sensibilities. Richly textured and lushly rendered, Unburnable showcases a welcome and assured new voice.

Takes a while to get started.......2007-09-07
I took a little while for me to get into this book. I, quite frankly, didn't care about Lillian the main character until I was almost a third of the way through. The most dimensional and complex characters were of course Matilda and Iris. Once the novel's focus shift primarily to them, it becomes a page turner. If you feel like investing the time to get to the heart of this tale, give it a read.
Chimamanda Adichie's comments on Unburnable.......2007-07-23
Chimamanda Adichie (Half of a Yellow Sun, Purple Hibiscus: A Novel) had these wonderful things to say about UNBURNABLE in the book review section of London's Guardian newspaper on Saturday June 23, 2007:
"I read Marie-Elena John's novel Unburnable on the plane from New York to Copenhagen. I laughed aloud so often reading this wondrously intelligent book about Dominica and the United States and Africa, about gender, class and race, about love and sexuality, that the bespectacled man sitting next to me put his Wall Street Journal down and leaned over to see what the title was. He asked what it was about. I could have told him how it dealt honestly with issues without ever forgetting to keep character and soul as its centre, but instead I told him a tiny anecdote from the book about black women and thongs. And I much enjoyed his blush."
A Must Read.......2007-03-27
This is a great book to kick back in silence and just immerse yourself into suspense, deep thinking, and a few tears. I was just a little disappointed with the ending, but all in all this was a great read.
Not a Fluff Read!.......2007-01-14
I have been blessed enough in the last week to read not one but TWO great books this one being the greater. I will admit I wasn't wrapped up in the book by page two but by page ten I was all caught up in this story. Marie-Elena John is an EXCELLENT story teller. Her words are beautiful and her descriptions come off the page so effortlessly. I could've easily believed this was her third novel instead of her first. I laughed, I cried and I called all my friends and advised them to please read this book. I did not know anything about Dominica before picking up this novel and now I cannot learn enough. This book intrigued me to no end and I cannot wait to read future publishings from Marie-Elena John. This story is not in the least predictable and her knowledge on the subject matter is outstanding! If you are looking for a mind challenging novel that will shock and educate you at the same time then look no further.
Long Story Short.......2006-11-08
Interesting story, you have to continue to read this book and not stop or you might get side tracked if you put it down for too long.

Book Description
Sit back and enjoy an epic voyage through this delightful treasure trove of maritime tales. Here lies the author's unique concept of grouping similar but extraordinary sea experiences under twenty separate titles. His ability to do this comes out of his own extended readings in maritime lore for over fifty years. The reader is able to telescope the unusual tales of over two hundred ships in one handy volume. Mutinies, unimaginable sinkings, mystery ships sailing for years without crews, animal antics, sin at sea, accounts of piracy, wartime disasters and phenomena of the unknown are a few of the subjects recounted in pungent and quick studies. The author provides a whimsical separate chapter of his own World War II naval service aboard the USS Washington at Guadalcanal and aboard the USS Reno, which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the battle of Leyte Gulf. As National Commander of AMVETS, he also describes his personal efforts with President Eisenhower in securing the appropriation necessary to complete the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

A Most Pleasant Surprise.......2002-12-22
I was given this book as a gift. Now to tell the truth, I don't do well with water. Even thinking about ships makes me queasy. After reading this book I am absolutely hooked and fascinated. I want more stories. I wish the author to keep telling me tales. If there is still time for you to get this book as a gift for anyone on your list, I highly recommend it. Anyone would enjoy this read. And, if by chance you know someone with a Navy history or who already loves the sea, this book is a must. I surely hope there is a sequel. Thanks to the author for much enjoyment.
Unusual true stories about ships.......2002-10-30
I really enjoyed the author's unique stories of similar, but extraordinary sea experiences. The unusual tales of over 200 ships are grouped under 20 separate chapters. There are tales of mystery ships, mutinies, animal antics, piracy, phenomena of the unknown and more in these highly readable short stories. I was given this book by a colleague only to find that I am captivated by a world about which I knew nothing.
Intriguing Accounts of Unusual Ship Voyages.......2002-10-20
For those fascinated by the Titantic and other tragedies at sea, this book will be a great read. Not only does Berc write in a conversational manner about many such fatal voyages but he also has chapters on other themes such as mutinies, unusual cargos, ships that disappear, and other strange occurances. You don't have to be a naval history buff to enjoy these fasinating stories that happened to ships at sea. It was simply an enjoyable and well-written book for all ages. And, the author's description of his naval background, itself quite interesting, allows us to glimpse the reason for his obvious passion for the topic.
Customer Reviews:
a bit breathless but a necessary read for Forester fans.......2005-12-22
Sanford Sternlicht's work on C.S. Forester is not, as the title implies, merely an analysis of CSF's Hornblower novels, though it includes that, but it is a fairly complete and quite useful literary biography of one of the 20th century's most popular writers of fiction. Sternlicht does tend to over-write: CSF wrote of Napoleon as 'an evil, octopus-like ruler' (not even CSF in worst moments would have said that); CSF faced 'pain itself and even death' in the last 24 years of his life, something that will come as a shock to no one born into this fallen world; one of CSF's books 'is entirely cleared for action.' The breathlessness is more suited to a juvenile analysis than a grown-up literary work. To Sternlicht, CSF is a selfless hero himself that can do little wrong. A good antidote to this approach is the quite opposite view of CSF's son John, who in his biography of his father persuasively paints a picture of a dishonest, cheap, and disloyal man.
Sternlicht also stumbles in a few places: the Bismarck was not a pocket battleship (a gaffe surprising for a naval reserve officer who claims to have 'sailed the same seas' as Hornblower--note to Sternlicht: he's fictional, man); the assertions that Hitler liked CSF's novel 'The General' and that Her Majesty's Government wanted to honor Forester perhaps with a CBE or OBE are both unsourced; Sternlicht's view of the collection of stories published under the title 'The Man in the Yellow Raft' as mediocre is simply bizarre; his assessment that CSF wrote good (which must mean reliable) history is, to say the least, debatable.
And yet, for anyone serious about CS Forester as a writer, this book is a necessary read. Unsupportable analysis, gee-whiz overstatements, and a few factual errors aside, Sternlicht has done a good job of research from which others will benefit.
An excellent, well-written source of info on C S Forester.......2000-01-04
This fascinating and engaging book is the only critical/literary biography about novelist C S Forester (1899-1966) in print. It stands up very well as both a biography and a work of literary criticism. Lovers of the Horatio Hornblower novels, always hungry for more insights into the great captain's life, will find in this book a treasure trove, for a fictional character can only be truly understood when one knows more about the actual source of the character -- C S Forester. But this book covers all of Forester's major works, not just the Hornblower series. Author Sanford Sternlicht spins the tale of Forester's paradoxical and complex life and personality with the engaging touch of the novelist himself, but with the distance necessary for a critical biography. Sternlicht provides compelling and thorough insights into nearly all of Forester's writings [the few exceptions being two plays, a children's book, and some non-Hornblower short fiction], which include his novels (The African Queen, The General, Payment Deferred, the entire Hornblower saga, Hunting the Bismarck, and many more), history (The Age of Fighting Sail, and others), biography (Josephine: Napoleon's Empress, and others), and two travelogues. Forester's appeal and great popularity as a writer of fiction is examined in detail by Mr Sternlicht, who clearly knows his subject matter well. This is a revised edition of the 1981 first edition published by G. K. Hall, one of the TWAYNE'S ENGLISH AUTHOR SERIES books. Having read both editions, I can say without hesitation that the revised edition is a fresh and informative as the first, and that it is indeed a "revised" edition, with considerably more detail provided about Forester's home life (Sternlicht acknowledges new sources of information, including the significant addition of Forester's oldest son, John).
Forester's writing has a tremendous true-to-life, "verismo" quality which transports the reader into the time and place of the novel in hand. He achieved this by having an almost encyclopedic knowledge of those times and places, and by being able to put that knowledge to brilliant use in the some of the most fascinating books I have ever read, books which bear many, many readings and which stand up so well to those readings that one is left wanting even more Forester to read. He was truly a giant of popular culture, not just in America and Britain but worldwide, from the late 1930's to the 1960's. Sanford Sternlicht provides a very welcome door into the life and works of C S Forester, and this new book will be a very welcome addition to your bookshelf.
Book Description
It's April 1969, and fourteen-year-old Yolanda Sahagún can hardly wait to see her favorite brother, Chuy, newly returned from Vietnam. But when he arrives at the Welcome Home party the family has prepared in his honor it's clear that the war has changed him. The transformation of Chuy is only one of the challenges that Yolanda and the rest of her family face. This powerful coming-of-age novel, winner of the 1999 Chicano/Latino Literary Contest, is a touching and funny account of a summer that is still remembered as a crossroads in American life. Yolanda and her brothers and sisters learn how to be men and women and how to be Americans as well as Mexican Americans.
"A captivating portrayal . . . .the novel is challenging, warm, provocative, often humorous, always engaging."--Rudolfo Anaya
"Patricia Santana's Motorcycle Ride on the Sea of Tranquillity will take you on an exhilarating journey through the tortured landscape of the late 1960s, and show you how the stench of a brutal foreign war and revolutionary winds at home swept into the lives on one Mexican American family in Southern California. . . . Santana takes her place among those new Chicana writers who are refashioning the face of American literature for the twenty-first century."--Jorge Mariscal, University of California, San Diego, author of Aztlan and Viet Nam: Chicano and Chicana Experiences of the War
Customer Reviews:
Child of the Sixties.......2007-03-05
Patricia Santana has struck a chord on so many levels. She went back into the 1960's where even as children we knew they were turbulent, yet exhilarating times. Her expression of adolescent curiosities, love and confusion are as prevalent today as they were during that time, making this a novel that most people will have a self-to-text connection with. Being the child of immigrants I easily related to the home she grew up in and the traditions of the world during that time.
The novel is a well crafted. It makes us look at the world through the eyes of truly plausible, interesting characters and gives us some insights of the devastating aftermath of the Vietnam War.
Brillante.......2003-04-16
Unfortunately, I am not the Francisco that Yoli, the young heroine in Patricia Santana's beautiful first novel, falls in love with. But I wish I was. For long after having read this novel, I still find myself thinking of Yoli and imagining her giving me "the look". Isn't that the highest and most worthwhile achievement of a novel? That a Yoli or a Don Quixote become as real as hope, and in our moments of reflection, their words and actions echo our own internal beauty? Patricia, may you give us many more Yoli's and may your clear and strong writing, like a rippling, cool, mountain brook, continue to remind us of our source.
Taco Thursday Or What I Did In The Summer of '69.......2002-07-08
I'm a great fan of the "coming of age" story and of the first novel. "The Cider House Rules" by John Irving, being one of my favorite coming of age stories.
In Patracia Santana's "Motorcyle Ride on the Sea of Tranquility" we view the world from the eyes of a teenage Mexican American girl/woman whose brothers' recent return from Vietnam has turned her world upside down. Her brother, like so many Vietnam vets., has returned home possessed by demons.
While her brother struggles to right himself fourteen-year-old Yolanda "Yoli" Sahagun must not only learn to deal with her beloved brothers' gloom and doom mood but learn to deal with her own daunting and confusing experience. That of becoming a woman.
I hope the rest of America soon discovers, as I did, this rich, humorous, sad, and wonderful story. Author Santana obviously has her finger, and her heart, on the pulse of the Latino community. The dialoge is strong and Latino in this well written and well told story. For a glimps inside the life of a real Mexican Ameican family, read "Motorcyle Ride on the Sea of Tranquility."
