4 out of 5 stars A Practical, Useful GEM!.......2004-11-22

As a Change Management Consultant, you can imagine I have a significant number of books on the topic of CHANGE. The fact is that most of these have been helpful, but, generally, say pretty much the same thing. This one is both informative and useful!

Over the 10 years I've been working with leaders leading change in organizations, one of the greatest struggles is helping people understand that not everyone sees "change" in the same light. Conflict eminates from each different perspectives challenging the status quo. These challenges tend to look like resistance to the change itself. Musselwhite effectively describes the Change Style Preference Model as a viable tool to understand individual dynamics during change. This change model quite simply, makes great sense; and models that are practical, ARE USED by people in organizations during change.

The Change Style Preferences described in chapter 3 shows how "Conservers" prefer incremental change; that "Originators" prefer change that is quick and expansive; and "Pragmatists" prefer change that is more practical and functional . All three styles exist in organizations and are needed to bring change about. The book provides descriptions, pitfalls and prescriptive remedies for each style advising that all three can be executed effectively or ineffectively. Part Three of the book helps us understand how to use the knowledge of Change Styles in ourselves and others to become more effective leading change. The advice about communication "needs" for each change style during the transition process, is most useful.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, many books on change say much of the same thing. This one does too.....but with an exceptional conclusion.....the "Discovery Learning Change Process Model" pulls together all that has gone before. What a gift! "Using What You've Learned to Lead Change"....chapter 12 is the "pearl" in this book and the tool that will help leaders lead change! A real gem of a book.

    Book Description

Knowledge, as intellectual capital in organizations, is one of the most valuable resources in the global economy; yet knowledge management research has been largely contained both within organizational boundaries and from the perspective of the West (in particular the United States). Here, the views of a diverse range of well-known academic researchers, industry leaders, and public policy experts have been brought together to show how knowledge and knowledge management perspectives vary across different cultures, in different contexts, using different processes for different purposes.

      Book Description

People love bowl food. Bowl food is comfort food. It's soup for supper, or a hearty stew or creamy risotto. Bowl food is everything together--no segregated blue plate special with the meat here and the starch there and the vegetable over there, but all of it intermingling in a delicious matrix of taste and texture. Bowl food is eating your whole dinner with a spoon or chopsticks. It's casual, fun, and somehow it just tastes better. Lynn Aronson, one of America's "best young chefs" (Esquire), not only adores bowl food but has elevated it to a new level in her celebrated Manhattan restaurants, Lola and Lola Bowla. Now Ms. Aronson, along with fellow-chef and Lola Bowla alumna Elizabeth Simon, translates her vision of bowl food into a passionate cookbook with 200 dazzling, eclectic recipes. Bucking tradition and borrowing freely from cuisines East and West, BOWLFOOD COOKBOOK presents Soups and Stews: Lamb with Orzo and Curry Broth, Stewed Short Ribs, Thai Paella. Noodles and Pasta: Penne with Zucchini and Tomato Garlic Vinaigrette, Corn and Crab Tagliatelle, Peanut Noodles with Chicken and Shrimp, Capellini with Clams and Lobster Broth. Salads, Legumes, and Grains: Seared Steak Salad with Roasted Tomatoes, Braised Duck Risotto with Spicy Ginger Broth. Plus dumplings, desserts, sauces, broths--a boundlessly inventive world of food, and it all goes in a bowl.

5 out of 5 stars this woman is brilliant.......2001-04-20

who would of thought a simple ricotta/spinach dumpling would add such dimension to a meal?

i found the recipes approachable and reasonable to create. and a good read.

don't you always love a good read?

i felt encouraged and coaxed to step beyond my perceived culinary abilities. ok, the really tough ones i'll work up to, but truly...this is a book to own.

oh, and did i mention what a hit i was with one of these dishes at the garden girls luncheon?

      4 out of 5 stars Adventure Ahead.......1999-12-13

The best part of BowlFood is the fun it provides shopping for the wonderful array of ingredients I usually don't store as condiments. Rice stick noodles, black mustard seeds, corn husks and more - all easy to find in specialty markets, and those that aren't locally available are conveniently resourced in the rear of the book, telephones and websites included. Throughout the recipes, there are references to condiments on following pages that must be prepared and added. At first I groaned at the additional work, but found each one, so far in my exploration, easy to concoct and well worth the effort. My only criticism is that some dishes labeled vegetarian do include Nam Pla, a fish-based sauce, so these should serve as a warning to strict vegetarians. Tastes are mostly Asian, blended in fresh ways and easy to make - some spicy, some comfort food. I'm trying a new one weekly and am delighting my family. If your palette cries for meat and potatoes and the most adventure you'll allow is basil, then probably this isn't the cookbook for you.

5 out of 5 stars building delicious & soothing meals.......1999-12-12

Pasta salads have come and gone yet Pearl Pasta with Peas and Gorgonzola at a potluck dinner was devoured. I find it convenient to prepare and freeze quantities of stock in quart containers. I preferred tofu to the recommended eggplant in Shanghai Noodles but I am SO happy to be comfortable now with the array of asian seasonings used throughout the book. Zucchini Pancakes were great with serving sauce suggestions and I loved the inclusion of simple recipes for basil, cilanto and mint oils. The deserts and drinks are fresh and delicious. I substituted soy milk in some recipes with no problem. This book is a great resource

3 out of 5 stars good food, hard work.......1999-09-21

I've prepared several recipes from this book and the dishes have all been good, but they require much planning and preparation. The book seems to assume that the cook keeps quarts of homemade stock around, or is willing to whip up a batch for an evening's meal. For example, the recipe for Thai paella calls for six cups of lobster stock. That alone would break my food budget for the week! It doesn't seem that much care was taken to change the focus of the recipes from that of a restaurant kitchen to that of a home kitchen.

        Book Description

This book is an excellent resource if you have little or no investment or technological background, but want to learn how to make money in Internet and Internet-related stocks. It explains the whole ".com" phenomenon and will teach you how to watch traditional blue-chip companies for optimum investment opportunities.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Lambs Being Led to the Slaughter.......2000-12-21

Taking people with little investment experience and little technology knowledge and teaching them a little about investing in Internet stocks is inappropriate at best. That's like entering elderly people who move slowly into the running of the bulls in Pamplona. People are going to get hurt. Avoid this subject, and this book.

Here are some of the observations the author makes. "Investing in Internet stocks makes good sense." "With information, intelligence, and patience, you will be successfully investing in Internet stocks." "Investors willing to step out just a little on the risk side may find the rewards outstanding." Well, since the book came out, owning any of the Internet stocks has only led to losing a lot of money.

Why then did a rate the book at 2 stars rather than 1? Well, it does have some cautions in it. "Don't put your life savings into Internet stocks . . . ." Amen! You are encouraged to buy quality companies, hold the stocks, keep your expenses low, use mutual funds, watrch your risk (based on your stomach acid levels and sleepless nights), diversify, and have fun. Well, you would have been out of Internet stocks before the book came out if you followed that advice literally.

Many Internet companies are going out of business as they run out of cash. To the book's credit, this risk is finally pointed out briefly on pages 183 and 184.

Naturally, if many stocks were going to fall 50-99%, this was a great time to sell the stocks short. This is first mentioned briefly as an opportunity on page 147. But brand new investors should not be selling short in volatile categories.

Here's my advice. Buy a lottery ticket instead. You have the same chance of making money, and because the unit cost is smaller, you will lose less money.

Stick to things you know where the odds are in your favor. Read Common Sense About Mutual Funds by John Bogle instead if you want a useful perspective on how new investors can make money.

          Book Description

In recent years much has been said about governance and corruption in Asia, both before and after the 1997 crisis. This edited volume analyses the causes of corruption in East and Southeast Asia and considers the means of limiting and wherever possible eliminating the problem through better governance.

Taking a country-by-country approach the book explores the diversity in the quality of governance and patterns of corruption among countries and regions. Insightful analysis of these differences and similarities is used to argue that political will, appropriate structures and legislation, and political transparency are required if corruption is to be stopped. All these are needed along with a strategy relevant to the circumstances of the particular country concerned.

This volume outlines the key principles of good governance and the policies and practices essential for their application. As such, Corruption and Good Governance in Asia represents an extremely valuable contribution to our understanding of corruption and how to tackle the problem.

Although attention has focused on public sector initiatives to fight corruption on the demand side, private companies in every region have developed programs to fight it on the supply side. Policymakers and advocacy groups consider such preventive efforts to be a critical component of the anti-corruption toolkit. Company based programs to fight fraud and corruption, rely on ethics and the implementation of compliance systems. Pioneered in the US during the 70s, they consist of statement of values, a company code of conduct, training programs, decision making and reporting mechanisms. Based on case studies of international and regional corporations, this book documents an impressive trend: companies of very different size, nationality and background have been moving forward in recent years. The book look at the content of the program and at issues pertaining implementation and effectiveness such as the role of the business culture. It analyzes the incentives, internal and external, that drive the adoption and implementation of those techniques. . Many examples of actual mechanisms and alliance to disseminate good practices are presented, often involving partnerships with the public sector or the civil society

              Book Description

This book delves into the nature of governance in Asia both at government and corporate level. It reviews the history and suggests potential solutions for years of underperformance due to the corrupt practices that have developed because of a poor understanding of corporate governance. The authors are experts in practices in Asia and their views are expressed in a sympathetic manner, at no time insisting that a western model of governance is correct. Instead the authors advise local models appropriate to the state of development and suggest that individual countries institute behavioral models that will mature as nations quickly develop in an increasingly global world.

                        Book Description

In a capitalist economy, taxes are the most important instrument by which the political system puts into practice a conception of economic and distributive justice. Taxes arouse strong passions, fueled not only by conflicts of economic self-interest, but by conflicting ideas of fairness. Taking as a guiding principle the conventional nature of private property, Murphy and Nagel show how taxes can only be evaluated as part of the overall system of property rights that they help to create. Justice or injustice in taxation, they argue, can only mean justice or injustice in the system of property rights and entitlements that result from a particular regime. Taking up ethical issues about individual liberty, interpersonal obligation, and both collective and personal responsibility, Murphy and Nagel force us to reconsider how our tax policy shapes our system of property rights.

4 out of 5 stars I disagree with the argument, but the book is fairly solid.......2006-03-16

Nagel and Murphy have missed an important point in not recognizing that although property rights are conventional, Nozick gives a very convinving ontology of property rights that is compatible with the Lockean tradition. In other words, though property rights as they exist are conventional, they arise from the state of nature in a manner such that government enforcement is not an inherent quality of them. Hence, in arguing that individuals do not wholly own the fruits of their labor due to the fact that the possession of such fruits is enabled by government enforcement of property rights, Nagel and Murphy are clearly missing why Nozick comes to hold the entitlement view of property.

With all of this said, this is a pretty good book overall. It is one thing to disagree with the authors and their argument, it's another to outrightly discredit each of them as individuals. Previous reviewers that oversimplify what Murphy and Nagel are doing here seemingly either do not understand the complexities of these issues, or do not have the intellectual honesty and/or curiosity to consider something that is prima facie opposed to their opinion. To question the academic credibility of the authors is simply ignorant, as both are highly reputable and regarded, and to assert that the authors "seem unaware of the Lockean tradition" is dubious, since Locke is clearly mentioned and farily represented in the book.

The short version of this dopey book is this: Without Uncle Sam to protect your stuff you'd probably get mugged without hope of getting it back. Therefore you dont actually own it. I think most mafia dons think along these lines.
In another context, the money sitting in your banks safe doesn't actually belong to you. It belongs to the security guard who keeps it from getting stolen.
John Locke is spinning in his grave. The Sophists are laughing their butts off.

3 out of 5 stars Tax Equity and the State of Nature.......2003-02-01

In the Myth of Ownership, Murphy and Nagel attempt to invert the baseline for determining tax fairness. Instead of using the more or less pure market distribution of social welfare as the baseline from which to discuss the equity of the existing tax scheme (Should we tax the wealthy more? Should we tax capital gains? Is taxation of dividends equitable to those receiving dividends?), the authors believe it is more appropriate to proceed from another baseline. Their preferred baseline can be, in my view, formulated succinctly by reference to Ronald Dworkin's claim regarding the nature of a just state, i.e. that the 'sovereign virtue' of the state is equal concern for the fate of all citizens. Thus, in Murphy's and Nagel's view, any discussion of tax fairness must begin with this imperative, the fate of all citizens, and must keep it in mind where there is any serious discussion of tax equity since such discussions are really discussion of economic and social justice.

In the authors' view, to proceed from the baseline of market distributions of social welfare - - which most people agree would allow serious and troubling social outcomes - - is to utilize a market-centric conception of social justice. As all citizens are first that, i.e. citizens, all have a stake in the social compact and all must be the equal concern of the governing organs of the state. Thus, all have a right to live lives free of poverty and the inequalities allowed by pure market outcomes.

Those tax commentators proceeding from the market baseline are those whom the authors call 'unreflective libertarians.' They are those who believe that they first owneth, and the government taketh away, and that their claims to ownership of their incomes and assets do not require government validation. The authors argue, conversely, that the only ownership we have is what government considers permissible (after taking Dworkin's maxim into account).

Murphy and Nagel argue that ownership, since only legitimized by government, is almost completely dependent upon government. To justify their position they invoke Hobbes and they assert that the 'state of nature' prior to the formation of government was a Hobbesian war of all against all. Thus, government, and robust government at that, performs more than a regulative role but is the condition sine qua non for the possibility of ownership, property rights, wealth and even civility.

While one might have sympathy for where Murphy and Nagel want to take us, their utilization of Hobbes to demonstrate the near heirophanic role of government is precisely what leads to many of their critics' charges of statism. Their argument could have proceeded without such strong claims (assertions, really) about human nature and government. Many conservatives would argue that government does not only NOT provide OF ITSELF the conditions for the possibility of ownership and property, they would argue that government at times impedes those conditions in unfair and inappropriate ways. As well, there are those who would argue that the authors' assessment of human nature is too dark, although convenient to their argument that it is government, and not social actors, that creates the legitimacy for claims of ownership and property rights, etc. Many would point out, in fact, that 'constitutional conventions' precede constitutions and thus that legitimacy flows from the people and the people's moral deliberations and not from government per se (Where, in fact, does non-despotic government obtain its legitimacy but from the people?).

The argument in the Myth of Ownership rests upon philosophical pillars that are unhelpful to its case and which lead to conclusions that are both philosophically problematic and politically fatal in a Western context, and so its central argument fails. Few would disagree with the claim that wealth and ownership are helped along by governmental frameworks, some safeguards against unjust seizures etc. But, I would have to reject Myth's statism, it's dark view of human nature, and so I come away disappointed at what promised to be a rubber-meets-the-road philosophical essay. It would have been a better book if the authors grounded the legitimacy of ownership and property rights claims in the moral imagination of human beings, rather than in Leviathan.

I was very disappointed and wrote to the authors without reply (to date). They seem unaware of the Lockean tradition and its handling by writers such as Henry George (who wrote far more clearly than they over 100 years ago).

The entitlements approach to justice is more in tune with the common law and history than the idea of collectivist "creation" of "rights", "offences" or "social mortgages".

As Pitt the Elder observed, taxation and the common law are strangers (which is why taxation statutes reeived a strict construction against the Crown).

I could go on but why? If this sort of stuff gets published I should have a go myself!

4 out of 5 stars Is Vertical Equity Really Dead?.......2002-08-17

The main thrust of Murphy & Nagel's claim is that pre-tax income cannot be a moral base for the measurement of the fairness of taxation. Their claim is that the ultimate social justice of the entire economic system is the only proper end, of which taxation is a part, thus taxation and the equity thereof cannot be measured in a vaccum, rather only against the resulting end.

It would seem however that Murphy & Nagel make their claim too strong in that they claim that pre-tax income (and vertical equity) cannot be utilized as even a factor in the measurement. Unfortunately for their theory, pre-tax income is a fact of the market economy and the positive law surrounding such economy. Thus, if we are to ignore everyone's pre-tax income, the only possible result is that all after-tax income must come out equal. To claim any other result must come through the application of a judgment as to vertical equity.

It would seem that their claim would be far more sound if it were limited to saying that vertical equity may only be utilized as a means to achievement of the end of social justice. Murphy & Nagel, however, want to make their claim stronger so as to be able to discount the tax equity argument entirely. Ultimately such an argument must fail due to the reality of pre-tax income, but it is still a very interesting and well written book.

4 out of 5 stars I'll never forget this book. .......2007-09-02

I am not (at least I wasn't until recently) a big Natalie Cole fan. Never seen an interview or a concert, only owned one album. But a few months ago I listened to her Love Songs CD at the book store and was so moved by those old songs that I bought it and then strangely, I found I couldn't take it off my cd player in the car. I listened to it over and over, just magnetized by the sweet girlish vulnerability under the power of her voice. There is a mysterious quality about her singing----it's happy, and upbeat, but underneath it, there is a.... longing, and it's not in the melody, or the words, it's in her essence. I've been going through a hard time (in love) and I decided to google her and see if she had written a book that might give me some clues as to the strong sense of connection I was getting from this CD; this book came up and I ordered it. I can't say it's the absolute most stellar literary endeavor I have ever set my eyes upon but I can say this: I found a life-long friend in the pages of that book. I found an allie. A kindred soul who had the guts to reach out and say, I hope you can understand me and my words touch you in some way so you don't feel as alone as I have. (my analysis) I found someone who's willingness to strip down bare-naked and tell her story, including her lonliness that went all the way back to childhood, not ever feeling mothered or loved the way she needed to be, of never feeling that she really mattered or that anyone saw her or had time for her, of losing the most profound relationships of her life before she was 35, of sitting in the car in her garage weeping from a deep desire to belong to someone and have someone belong to her. I was brought to tears over and over. I can so relate. And you know what? Natalie if you're reading this, you are NOT alone. There are so many powerful, smart, educated, talented, spiritual women who have "made it" AND who still, and will always long for the love we never got and so badly needed at the most tender stage of life----and yet, brave on day in and day out anyway, often wondering "What does God even want me down here for?" Don't EVER think you're alone in that.

I am so grateful that she wrote this book because listeneing to her music, I always assumed she was one of the lucky ones in love, singing all about how she found the greatest love and it's going to last forever and all that... that music just tears your heart right out of your chest cavity when you don't got nobody---especially when you feel like you don't NEVER got nobody and you suspect you never will. When the right person never seems to show up, year after year and you fall in love with the wrong ones who never stay anyway. There is an advertisement for E-Harmony, a popular dating site that runs their commercial 4 times a damn hour with "everlasting love" in the background and although it's one of my favorite songs, it about killed me everytime that commercial aired because it seemed like that was the anthem for all the straight, happy people in the world who had found everlasting love---a private club that I will never belong to. But after reading this book, I LOVE that commerical because now I know it's just B.S. We ALL hurt that way. If SHE can feel alone and sing THAT song the way she she sings that song---hell we ALL feel alone. Now I listen to all her songs and I understand the attraction I have to her voice---this is not a woman celebrating the abundance or romantic love in her life. This is the story of a woman who sings about what she wants the world to be. A place of fulfillemnt and forgivness and gentleness and hope and being home in another's arms----for all of us. Tell ya the truth, I read her book in 4 days and it was like being with someone, who "got" me. I looked forward to opening those pages and just being with her. May sound weird but I think we've all had the experience of falling in love with a character in a book, and I fell a little bit in love with the girl and woman in those pages. Only problem is, I miss her in my life now.

5 out of 5 stars Who would have thought..........2007-04-10

I saw the TV movie of Ms. Cole's life a few years ago and found it interesting. I was looking for something to read and came across this book on Amazon. It is GREAT, even better than the movie! I love the writing style, it seems like she's sitting across from you telling you her life story. At the end, I felt that I knew and liked her. She has been through alot, but did not try to place the blame on anyone else. The story is very candid and I found myself laughing like all hell on the train while reading this book. I would say its probably one of the most even handed non-fiction books I've ever read (and thats saying alot because its an autobiography).

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read from the Daughter of Nat King Cole.......2006-04-05

What can I say. This book is one of those that you can't put down. Very frank and honest account from the daughter of one of the greatest singing legends. Natalie, (I call her by her Christian name because having read this book, I feel I know her well, which I find important when reading someones autobiography) has had some difficult times and gone from riches to rags, and back to riches, with some life altering experiences along the way. The 'Unforgettable with love' album is also amazing. I'm off to buy 'Ask a woman who knows' concert. READ THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Inspiration.......2004-05-30

Natalie shares with astounding truth, humbleness, and shows us all how much she has been through, and how she - with the Divine help in her life - has triumphed from the darkest days. This book is an astounding beacon of hope for anyone who has been through both the highs and lows of life, and wants to genuinely rise from within.
Natalie shares much about her childhood, her relationship with her relatives, and so much about her own life, and how many times she thought it was all over for her, only to see that she can rise again - no matter what she has been through.

On a personal note, in 1995 I had dinner with Natalie, her candor and honesty took me back so much that I wrote about her with deep respect in my own book, `Individual Power'. She is a true soul, and I have the utmost respect for her, the courage she has shown, and how she is a beacon of hope for others.

If you want to read a book about one incredible woman, who humbly and candidly shows how no matter what you go through, you CAN triumph, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is a gift that will touch you because of its authenticity.

Thank you Natalie for being a beacon of Light and Hope for so many. Keep Going Girl - You are One Awesome Gem!

Sharing from his own personal journals of the war in Afghanistan, author Donald A. Heichel II explains how a reserve soldier deals with a deployment and transition into full-time defense of our freedom.

We all feel and share the same feelings when it comes to what our soldiers are experiencing in Afghanistan. This book gives a better view and outlook of what our soldiers experience on a day to day basis. When I read this book it touched my heart because it made me realize how lucky I am to live in a free country. I would recommend this book to everybody.

I have found this book extremely enjoyable. Being Greek and living in West Virginia I was very interested in reading the book. It is very well written and I am constantly amazed at everything Mr. Janus has accomplished and the people he has met in his lifetime.

As always, it's nice to read a book about people you know and places you see every day. Mr. Janus should be commended for his philanthropic achievements and we should all strive to live by his example when it comes to doing things for your fellow man. It is also a fun way to find out about historic events.

If you are looking for a book that's fun as well as informative, you should definatly read this one.
