Not a how-to book.......2007-04-03
Not exactly a how-to book for the novice. If you have decent writing skills and a pretty good idea what you are doing already, then this is an excellent resource for ideas and templates. I would highly recommend it for someone like me, a long-time front line employee that has moved into management and seriosly needed to upgrade his resume. For those type of people it is definitely 5 stars.

This is a fantastic book, but don't lose your money buying the 2nd edition when the 3rd edition is out there (somewhere)!
Noble's Gallery Is Noble!.......2003-09-25
David Noble's second edition (I look forward to his third edition) is comprehensive indeed with over 400 pages of sample resumes and cover letters, encompassing a broad spectrum of occupations. Footnote comments are especially helpful to job-seekers who wish to develop their own documents, and the ample gallery of sample works offers even seasoned resume writers fresh ideas in creating form diversity and distinctiveness when considering a client's unique values, personality, and accomplishments in the developmental process.
"Before" and "after" resume comments are helpful and reveal flaws that may not be readily apparent to the novice, and even subtle errors could sink the candidate when found before a seasoned recruiter's eyes.
While most samples are combination style formats, perhaps a few more samples of chronological and functional styles would be helpful to those whose backgrounds fit these categories.
Noble's "Gallery of Best Resumes" is excellent, and I recommend that serious resume writers keep a current desk copy available for ready reference, and be sure to order a copy for your resource library.

Just the Facts.......2003-02-11
I am a Field Training Officer for a large Southern California law enforcement agency and the most difficult part to teach new officers is how to write a proper report.I have trained over 30 law enforcement officers with various educational backgrounds and all of them have had problems with police report writing. I consider this book to be an excellent reference to improve your report writing skills. I have encouraged every new officer that I have trained to purchase this book.
The book explained the basics of investigation, note taking, rules of narrative writing, describing persons and property,and issues in writing. The book also explained how to write a search warrant and how to dictate your reports.
The overall content of the book was excellent and my only complaint was that the book should have provided sample narrative reports from several different agencies. The law enforcement agency that I work for uses headings(Assignment, Victim Interview, Suspect Statement, etc.)for the narrative portion of the report while other agencies do not. Hopefully, the author will include some sample burglary,theft,vandalism, robbery and other criminal reports in a future edition that will show reports with and without headings.
In closing, if you are a rookie or veteran law enforcement officer that wants to write quality police reports without the traditional police lingo then buy this book and follow the advice in it.

Detailed mathematical models are increasingly being used by companies to gain competitive advantage through such applications as model-based process design, control and optimization. Thus, building various types of high quality models for processing systems has become a key activity in Process Engineering. This activity involves the use of several methods and techniques including model solution techniques, nonlinear systems identification, model verification and validation, and optimal design of experiments just to name a few. In turn, several issues and open-ended problems arise within these methods, including, for instance, use of higher-order information in establishing parameter estimates, establishing metrics for model credibility, and extending experiment design to the dynamic situation.

When Iberian Jews were converted to Catholicism under duress during the Inquisition, many struggled to retain their Jewish identity in private while projecting Christian conformity in the public sphere. To root out these heretics, the courts of the Inquisition published checklists of koshering practices and "grilled" the servants, neighbors, and even the children of those suspected of practicing their religion at home. From these testimonies and other primary sources, Gitlitz amp; Davidson have drawn a fascinating, award-winning picture of this precarious sense of Jewish identity and have re-created these recipes, which combine Christian amp; Islamic traditions in cooking lamb, beef, fish, eggplant, chickpeas, and greens and use seasonings such as saffron, mace, ginger, and cinnamon. The recipes, and the accompanying stories of the people who created them, promise to delight the adventurous palate and give insights into the foundations of modern Sephardic cuisine.

Good Food, Bad History.......2007-03-08
I was excited when I first heard about this book, but when I got a copy, I was quite disappointed.
First the good... the recipes produce tasty dishes.
But they are not the recipes of Spain's Jews, secret or public.
These are recipes invented by the authors with a minimum of supporting evidence, or, in fact, most of the time, none at all.
They are based for the most part on the testimony of people who turned in Conversos for being "secrect Jews". The mere mention of, oh, say, chick peas and honey, has led the authors to invent a recipe that includes these ingredients.
If you are truly interested in the history the food eaten by Spain's Jews, you will not learn much. If you want some nice Spainish-style recipes eaten by Jews, you'll probably do better skipping the sad tales of betrayal and torture and buying a modern Sephardic cookbook.
A drizzle of honey.......2007-01-11
A fascinating look into the lives of Secret Jews during the Inquisition. A collegue had recommended it for its historical insights, and I found the anecdotes about the fates of the recipe authors tragic but a great insight into a time of flux and intolerance. Good recipes, too!
This is Gastronomy for the strong of heart.......2006-12-21
I was very delighted to read this insightful gastronomic reference. Although, it is more than a recipe book, it is also a telling account on what it took to go through the Inquisitional process. Hence, a Drizzle of Honey, is much more than one bargains for. I have also made the Adafina that is included in the book, and it was quite good. The Inquisition was not necessarily aimed at mainstream "Jews" per se, but at Conversos, or "Jews"who were forcibly converted.
It is very interesting that in many respects the Jewish converts to Christianity were many times denounced on the slightest pretext of eating in the "Jewish" manner. It could be as forthright as not eating pork for "health" reasons, or as absurd as making stew with Swiss chard, both being indicators of a "relapsed" Jew, in other words a Christian heretic. To our postmodern sensibilities these gastronomic preferences are almost comical. But to many of my relatives in Spain living under those Medieval conditions it was absolutely terrifying. I've got to hand it to Mr. Gitlitz, his premise for this book is very well thought out. This book is probably not for the weak of heart or stomach, given that some references in his book are counterintuitive when it comes to appetite. But, for those who want to learn about our tragic past, and who want to see if some of the recipes are what our grandmothers cooked, I fully recommend it. My Mother always cooked with Swiss chard and used olive oil in her meals. In Spain this would have been a sure sign that we are Jewish. Oh well.
A Lost Cuisine, and New Art for This Chef.......2006-09-01
Recently I picked up a copy of the book, "A Drizzle of Honey: the Lives and Recipes of Spain's Secret Jews". It has a fascinating and well documented history as well some marvelous redactions of the most likely constructs of recipes. I recall learning briefly about the secret Sepahrdim in hebrew school. This book gives marvelous insight and helps recreate a delicious cuisine. I am fairly certain that either this passover or the next I am going to attempt a full Sephardic sedar for a change of pace and add some culinary excitement.
Read it as history rather than as recipes.......2006-01-14
I received this book as a present several years ago, but I've never cooked any of the recipes. That's despite the fact that several of them sound good, some VERY good, such as roast chicken stuffed with fruit, ginger and lavender; or a fish and eggplant casserole.
However, the book is of more interest historically than it is as a "what to make for dinner tonight" inspiration. There's two reasons -- one that would ordinarily make these dishes appealing, and one that creeps me out.
The positive side, first. Most recipes we have from the middle ages are those of the nobility -- the people who could afford to stuff a tiny bird inside a larger bird inside another one inside an even bigger one. In contrast, this is a book of recipes of (or at least inspired by) the "ordinary" middle class person of Spain in the 1400s and 1500s. So if you're interested in the evolution of cooking, and what people ate before the discovery of the New World introduced corn, tomatoes, and potatoes, this is a fascinating book all on its own. But you may not want to read it late at night, if you're prone to nightmares.
That's because the history it illuminates is depressing. The recipes are culled from detailed stories about the Spanish Inquisition, particularly the expulsion of the Jews, the torture of those who would not confess, and the "evidence" of those who converted to Christianity but who were accused of still practicing Judaism. Quite often, the "evidence" was a neighbor observing what the family ate ("In Almazan in 1501, an anonymous witness reported that when Isabel Velez's father died, the family sat at a low table near the door, and ate 'a casserole made of chard and bread crumbs and cheese,' which Isabel had prepared at home and brought to her father's house"). You get the testimony of the trial, sometimes the result (such as burning), and then an analysis of the dish that was mentioned ("Typical of Iberian Jewish funerals was a communal meal eaten in the house of the deceased after the funeral..."). The authors figure out a recipe that matches what was mentioned and reflects what was known to be available ingredient-wise (so it may not be *exactly* what the Accused had, but it's close, and how can one object to a tasty chard-cheese casserole?).
Historically, it's fascinating. But do I really want to cook a chicken that got some woman killed 500 years ago? In some sense, I do; it keeps her memory alive. But, uh, I think I'll just make this OTHER roast chicken instead, which doesn't have all that weird karma tied up in it. Enough of those, and -- well, as I said, I've had the book for about 5 years and I haven't cooked anything from it.
However, I'm not planning to give the book away, because it is wonderful and fascinating from a foodie historian perspective. Aside from the reason these scholars brought up the subject, it's great to learn about the thickeners used at the time, a discussion of what almori is or was (a staple of medieval Islamic cooking), and so on. And this might be a 5 star book, from that viewpoint.
If you view it simply in that manner, with the recipes as illustrations, perhaps it won't make you feel that weird. Or, if you have a stronger stomach than I, go ahead and cook the recipes; some of them seem awesome. Let me know how it turns out, okay?

Helps to show the diversity that aided the movement.......2004-09-03
One thing I really enjoyed about reading Rev. Graetz's book was that it showed some of the diversity that was a critical part of the Civil Rights movement without making the case that African-Americans could not do it alone.
Anytime a book is written in this type of context - a minority perspective on an issue - there is a danger of overshadowing the majority's struggle. In this case, Rev. Graetz merely tells of his involvement in what he saw as the right thing to do. Never does he make a huge deal about his own sacrifice, but instead talks about the general struggle. In the fine line between unique-diversification and over-the-top self praise, Rev. Graetz clearly falls on the side of the first.
In addition, the book looks at different congregational backgrounds in the black community coming together for the common cause.
There are many stories to be told about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and this is one that should be read.
Defines living out Christian justice and mercy.......1998-02-14
Pastor Robert Graetz left seminary with his young family to take a call to Trinity Lutheran Church in Montgomery, Alabama. As a white pastor during the time of the civil rights activity in Montgomery, he writes of his day to day struggle with racial hatred and how it affected his congregation and his family. This book defines the courage it takes to live out Christian justice and mercy and added a dimension to my knowledge of this era I had not yet experienced before I read it. Although I rated it a 9, if someone did not return my copy, I would buy another. It is a must for my library.

Swados devouts a section each to her mother, father and brother, and finally, herself. In a torrential-at-times rush of prose she describes a youth spent dealing with her mom's and schizophrenic brother's odd behavior - due to mental illness - which was never named, explained or treated with much compassion by her hyperactive, determined-to-succeed-at-all-costs father. Swados shows herself as a young child, imaginative, resourceful and creative, who managed, after a self-destrucive period, to develop into an imaginative, resourceful and creative adult. Her brother, Lincoln, especially comes alive for the reader, as a budding writer and cartoonist whose schizophrenia was never adequately treated (due in part to Lincoln's own obstinence) who later died. Swados' job from childhood on, she tells us, was to be the well child, the success her father could tell stories about to his friends. She well describes the toll that took on her. Yet there is much love and compassion, among the occasionally hurt and bitter memories. Recommended.

In the history of disease is there any other that wreaks as much havoc on family life as does mental illness? Elizabeth Swados, a successful author and musician, shares her story of a family torn apart by dysfunction, culminating in dual suicide. The family's inability to cope with the symptoms of schizophrenia, "with severe paranoid tendencies" of Elizabeth's older and talented brother (Lincoln), serves as the cornerstone for this memoir. By devoting a separate chapter to each family member, Swados succeeds in conveying the effect of Lincoln's illness on individual family members and, ultimately, on the family as a whole. In attempting to come to terms with her mother's depression, which has rendered her "unreachable," Swados observes that "research in mental illness hadn't come up with an explanation of schizophrenia that might have lessened some of the blame on her." This criticism of psychiatry `s inability to relieve the feelings of frustration and helplessness experienced by family members, while harsh, is not uncommon.
While this memoir may be fraught with tragedy, the Swados family is, in many respects, representative of all families. Thus, the child, Elizabeth, remains blissfully unaware of her brother's "struggle with hospitalizations and medications" over an extended period of time. Her admission that "what I knew at the time was that my brother went to college and never returned" is a reminder of the extent to which families go to protect the innocence of youth. It also suggests that one of our major tasks as adults lies in reconstructing our family histories, based on our own memories and those of others.
