Recognising what is toxic to you is perhaps a good starting point. Many of us spend more time with the people we work with than those we've chosen to spend our lives with. Most of us make assumptions that what offends or upsets us is the same for everyone else. This is not so.
In this book, Dr Lubit provides - with humour - descriptions of different types of managers and of different management techniques that can make working life hell.
Being aware of toxic behaviour and being able to manage its impact are two quite separate things. Dr Lubit provides insights into the former and resources to help individuals and groups deal with the latter.
I've had this book on my management bookshelf since it was published and find it an excellent resource both on a personal level and as part of mentoring other staff.

I wasn't sure I would like this book. The topic of workplace psychology can be done wrong in so many ways. You can present it too clinically and thus lack any practicality. And you can slide the other way and shower the user with pop psychology check-lists and acronyms.
This book walks the ideal path deftly and presents practical workplace issues with the right blend of psychology background and practical wisdom on how to handle individuals with personality issues.
The book is organized by disorder. Each type of personality is presented in it's own chapter with what to look for. As well as how to handle that individual as a boss, a coworker and as a subordinate.
A fascinating read on it's own, and practical advice for people stuck in tough jobs where they have to contend with coworkers who have personality problems.

Lubit's volume, "Coping with Toxic Managers and Subordinates," should be considered a standard reference for veteran and new professional staff, experienced and beginning managers, and leaders of all non-profit organizations, especially cultural ones. Colleagues have said that these conclusions apply to all organizations.
Non-profits and cultural organizations face major management challenges today. For example, while the number of museums has increased, there has been a great decrease in total funding. To stay competitive, these organizations have had to make fundamental changes in their operations and rely on a new breed of managers and professionals. This has been complicated by strong internal resistance to change. As a result, many cultural organizations find themselves unable to harness the talents of their staff and, instead, find productivity decreasing and morale dropping rapidly. The book is well organized, snappily written, and easy to use. It is complete with detailed "how to" sections, charts, and examples with both good and bad endings. This book will facilitate not just survival, but productivity and well-being in the workplace -- and elsewhere. I recommend it highly.

This book is an excellent handbook for managers who struggle with motivating 'challenging' people. It enables the reader to quickly identify types of toxic managers and provides guidance on effectively dealing with each type. Should be required reading for anyone responsible for improving company/individual performance.
Toxic costs: heal the pain........2003-12-15
This author offers clear, concise writing on a classic business problem: how to work with difficult people. Who doesn't work with at least 1 difficult person? What organization does not suffer productivity or financial loss from at least 1 toxic manager?
As I read the well-defined descriptions of Toxic Managers, I couldn't help but recall the many faces of those difficult people that have crossed my own work path over the past 24 years, and how I might have dealt with them differently under Roy Lubit's construct. There are some other books out there on the same subject. Some, like "Toxic Coworkers," may do the job even better. But this is still a useful volume. As the Introduction notes (page 1): "This is a book about impossible people and how to cope with them." Coping is the center of this work--how to deal with workers who are difficult to work with. The idea? (Page 7): "Coping enables you and the Difficult Person to get on with the business at hand." "Win-win" is the goal. Is the advice useful? Each reader will have to decide for him/herself?
The book describes a variety of difficult types: hostile-aggressive, the complainer, unresponsive ones, wonderfully nice people who don't perform, the negativist, know-it-alls, and indecisive stallers. For each, the author describes the malady and then suggests how one might work with them to get the best out of them. The book closes, also, with ideas as to how one can manage one's own "defensive behavior" around such problem workers. The author concludes (page 214): ". . .many people just like you have found that coping effectively with difficult people is possible."
Final question: How well does the book succeed? Not bad, but the solutions will not convince all readers.

I thought the parts of this book that described some of the different, difficult personalities was very good. I actually really thought it had something to offer and the strategies were practical. The insights though didn't stick and I think that you have to read this regularly to keep reminding yourself that all these people exist in the world (including you) and you are going to see them every day. Thats kind of a depressing thought actually. With all the other books I need to keep reading to remind myself about various insights I want to stay home.
I liked the concept of this book.......2007-02-05
The concept of this book is good. You can't change other people, and you can't always avoid them. The most realistic option is to have some coping strategies. I think the author outlined them well. I gave the book three stars, though, because the reading got to be tedious and boring. I've read similar books that are more enjoyable, either because you can identify the different personality type with humor, or because they explained the personalities more realistically with better situational examples. This book seemed a little dry.
Helpful advice .......2007-01-19
Bramson wisely uses the word 'coping'. That is he is not suggesting that one can really overcome or transform difficult people. He is speaking primarily about difficult people in the working place. The domineering aggressive abusive type should according to Bramson not be reacted to with anger and rage. One should also refused to be intimidated, and instead asset one's own views. The sniper who by little satirical remarks, and efforts at humor tries to hurt and diminish should be confronted and questioned as to his true intentions. The complainer should be opposed with positive ideas on the same project that the complainer is negative about. The know-it-alls, the silent- negative types, the indecisive also can in some way countered and dealt with.
Above all the aim must be to prevent these negative types from dominating one's own mindscape and action.
All of us confront in one way or another difficult people. And each of us is perhaps in a certain way a difficult person himself. This book is addressing a subject we all in some way know, and have connection with.
One other point. I have known and loved in my life very very difficult people perhaps beyond in a way described in this book.The fact is it is often what is difficult in them which somehow more strongly binds them to us.
This is a complicated subject about which there are worlds to be said.

Al is one of my favorite Food TV personalities. I particularly love ot watch his Colonial Christmas special every year, especially seeing the old fat Al trying on pilgrim clothes.

Not worth the price.......2002-11-28
I bought this expecting to find some ideas and tips about keeping track of my auction expenses and. Perhaps this "book" would help me think of expenses that are deductible that I hadn't considered or give me ideas for setting up a system to keep track. I guess for the price, I expected there would be some advice. This "book" only has 12 envelopes for keeping receipts in with a place to write totals on the front. The 12 envelopes are bound together with a title page and there is nothing else in the "book". Honestly, I think most people who sell on ebay have the ability to keep track of expenses in a financial program and can find a cheaper way to file receipts. This was not worth the price to me and I am sending it back for a refund.

This is great book on investing and I highly recommend it. The CD is great to listen to in the car and gets all the points across. I suggest that you also get the book. It's way better than the Graham books - which are very dated - they give you the tools to buy stocks selling at below book value - not a lot of those around any more. Besides Buffett got over Graham years ago.

This book tries to reverse-engineer Warren Buffett's investment strategy and does a horrible job of it. Like all of Mary Buffett's books, this is long on hype and short on credibility.
For about the same price, you can buy the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, a book that Warren Buffett personally recommends reading.

This work covers the major world film directors who had at least made a significant start on their careers by 1945. As a film historian who frequently analyzes directors and their films, I found this volume extremely valuable. It gives one a perfect opportunity to quickly cover the scope of a director's entire career, reading quotes from the director as well as opinions of prominent critics about significant films from that individual's career.
"World Film Directors" also provides a film historian or fan with the opportunity to enhance his or her perspective of a particular movie by receiving important information on the making of the film, as well as the director's view of the subject matter, as well as opinions of reviewers.
What impressed me most about this work was the exhaustive manner in which it covered film history from 1890-1945. While the breadth is spectacular, the book never bogs down into trivia or fact recitation for its own sake. The directors' lives and careers, as well as their significant films, are covered with the microscope applied to substance rather than minutiae.
The Best Source for World Film Biography & Filmography.......2001-02-08
If you are a serious film buff, you will want to get Volume One of John Wakeman's incredible 247 page work on about four hundred film directors born before 1920 and well launched on their careers before 1945, primarily in the U.S. and Europe. Wakeman's book includes a photo, detailed biography, critical film reviews and a complete filmography for every director listed. All of my favorites are here along with many fascinating directors that I've only heard mention of elsewhere. Flipping through this volume, I come across Robert Bresson, Jean Cocteau, Maya Deren, King Vidor and many other notable and under appreciated directors. A small critiscism is that artists who dabbled in film and influenced other filmmakers, such as Joseph Cornell, are not included. Wakeman also acknowledges that his plan to include a few of the most admired Chinese directors "were undone by a lack of reliable information" in the early-mid 1980's. Despite these lapses, this is the only reference book to cover many of these directors and to go into such detail about their lives and their films. If you love film and its history, it is well worth having.
