4 out of 5 stars if you are doing your entire home...but the home planner!.......2007-03-19

i went with the cheaper of the two because of the dupliaction slant but you get no bathroom or kitchen parts/stickers....one of the main things people remodel! if this is for your house and you are building an office, improvise on the parts or rename them from the other set or splurge and get both. i was upset when i did not have all i needed but if it was just for an office....you get a great set to work with and have some extras for rearranging other areas later.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of duplication.......2005-09-29

As a stand alone, this is a great tool.

But if you already own the Home Quick Planner, be aware that you already have 4 of the 5 pieces in the Office kit. There's only one sheet of "office" furniture. The rest of the Office kit duplicates most of the contents of the Home kit.

If this is the only planner you are buying, it's well worth the price. If you're buying it with the Home kit, it's not worth the money unless you insist on the specialized pieces.

4 out of 5 stars great sports law book.......2007-10-10

very informative and specific on sports law subject; clarifies everything. price could be cheaper i guess. The only reason I bought it was because it was required for class

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous revision: great for sports law course.......2002-11-15

This is an excellent text for a comprehensive look at sports law. Professor Wong has made some excllent changes to his already successful Essentials text. The addition of five new chapters (including Antitrust, Labor, IP, Business: Structures, Tax and Employment, and Disabilities) from the second edition demonstrate that Wong is on the cutting edge of the intersection of law and sports. The shift in focus from solely amateur issues to the addition of professional sports law topics ensures that the text will be an invaluable resource for sports law courses on the undergraduate, graduate, and law school level. The narrative format of the book, with case notes at the end of each section, makes the book very readable. The tremendous breadth of topics, the smooth flow of the book, and the focus on current issues in sports prove that Wong's text is at the forefront of available sports law textbooks.

    4 out of 5 stars A bit wierd..........2007-01-11

This is a pretty good book. However, there are some incestuous bits that are a bit disturbing as well as a great deal of focus on death and rotting. Beyond that the book is well written, the characters believable and interesting and a story you can get into.

3 out of 5 stars Assassins, and siblings, and zombies OH MY!.......2005-04-21

Huff continues in the world she started in "Sing the Four Quarters" but with a new set of characters. We meet two Imperial assasins, brother and sister, Bannon and Vree, who are quickly shown to be the most impressive and skillful assassins on the block. The beginning is a bit disconcerting as we traveled through Huff's last book with bards and kigh in a completely different kingdom (Shkoder instead of the Empire), and so it takes a bit of readjustment to get settled into this part of the world and the way it works. But the adjustment is small and only noticeable for the first few chapters.

Vree and Bannon have been trained together since they were 7 and 6 respectively, and have no family save the Imperial Army. They have been brutally trained throughout their lives to act as two blades with one mind. But when they go on a mission to take out Governor Aralt all that changes between one heartbeat and the next as Bannon blinks and finds himself in the dead body of his target, looking up at his own smiling face. Apparently it is possible for your kigh to jump bodies, and that's exactly what Gov. Aralt did to trap Bannon within the Governor's dying body. Vree is able to reach Bannon/Aralt's dying body and take her brother's kigh into herself before the body dies. Now these siblings are closer than they've ever been, and that may just tear them apart. Instead of being two blades and one mind they are now one blade and two minds. An unsteady truce is struck between the man who took over control of Bannon's body (his name is actually Gyhard) and Vree/Bannon to capture a new body for Gyhard to jump to so that Bannon can have his returned. Unfortunately the one Gyhard has his sights set on is the Imperial Prince, the one person above all else those in the Army are sworn to protect. Because Bannon and Vree share so many memories it becomes quite confusing which memory belongs to whom. Vree and Bannon have to deal with the uncomfortable mixture of their kigh and the resulting loss of identity without going mad while formulating a plan to not kill the Prince and still get Bannon's body back. Packing all this in a few hundred pages makes for a very suspenseful and fast-paced read.

Okay, I could have done without quite so much of Bannon's thoughts in this book, though they often served to lighten both mine and Vree's mood. I simply found his thoughts not as interesting and wished that he'd shut up and let other characters have more dialogue in the story. ^_^ It's very interesting to watch Huff take her characters to the brink of insanity and back, and to see how each of their personalities deal with their mutual loss of identity.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-08-22

Fifth Quarter has quite a few interesting characters involved in intricate relationships. There's excellent action, horror, romance, and a bit of humor mixed in throughout the story. This book explores taboos but doesn't step delicately; rather, it plainly thrusts the situation in your face. I enjoyed the emotional stress on all the different characters as their self-images changed. Tanya Huff does a lot of character development in her books.

2 out of 5 stars If you have another book on your list, read it first.......2001-02-17

Maybe you will like this book. I didn't. Huff attempted to do something new with gender by pushing a male into a female's body (actually, a brother and sister are sharing her body). Personally, I think it fell rather flat. The hint (well, MORE than a hint) of incestuous desires was mostly gratuitous. I wasn't impressed.

In addition, I didn't care for the objects of their quest: (1) to acquire the body of a prince and push HIS spirit out of his body and (2) to locate a "could-have-been" bard who is raising the dead, like zombies. The whole "walk of the living dead" portions of the novel were too dark for me, but I generally prefer my fantasy to be more idyllic, epic, or lighthearted.

Hey, this book might be for you if the gothic or vampires appeal. If not, I'd pass on this one. Read "Sing the Four Quarters" (book 1) and "The Quartered Sea" (book 4) instead and skip the two middle novels. Both are self-contained enough that books 2 and 3 won't be missed.

3 out of 5 stars Brother & Sister Assassins versus the Grim Reaper.......2000-10-21

A 'noir' fantasy. "Fifth Quarter" reminded me of one of those old German woodcuts of the Grim Reaper stalking through a medieval village, bishops, commoners, and knights falling dead in his path. The grim reaper in this tale is a pathetic old man with a Song that can seal the souls of the dead back inside their decaying bodies.

Tanya Huff sets "Fifth Quarter" in the same world as "Sing the Four Quarters". There are Bards who can Sing to the 'kigh', the elemental spirits of earth, air, fire, and water. The Empire and its armies are major elements in the plot. However, "Fifth Quarter" is not a continuation of the earlier book. It is the story of brother and sister assassins, who end up inhabiting the same body (the sister's) when they attempt to kill a man who has discovered the secret of eternal life. How the brother gets his body back is one of the book's dominant plot lines, along with the hunt for the grim reaper, who has abducted the Emperor's son.

I didn't enjoy "Fifth Quarter" as much as Huff's earlier book. It dwells too much on incest and decaying bodies. However, it is a strong, well-plotted novel with likeable, interesting characters (the only exception is the narcissistic brother-assassin). Huff does her usual good job with the minor characters, too. I grew especially fond of the city guard who is one of the first to encounter the walking dead. She survives the encounter, only to be demoted because no one believes her. Next, she barely escapes death at the hand of the sister-assassin. Finally, she stumbles across the assassin who has sworn to kill the brother-sister team because they deserted the Army..

I've already bought the sequel, "No Quarter" to see what happens to Vree and her new live-in companion. Huff is always worth reading, especially for her carefully developed characters.

      Book Description

George Allen was a top-ranked NFL coach throughout the sixties and seventies, coaching in turn the Chicago Bears, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Washington Redskins. Raised in a home dominated by her three football-obsessed older brothers and her father's relentless schedule, Jennifer Allen came of age in a cauldron of testosterone and win-at-all-costs mentality.

Buffeted by the coach's tumultuous firings and hirings, the Allen family was periodically propelled to new teams in new cities. And while her French-Tunisian mother attempted to teach Jennifer proper feminine etiquette, the author dreamed of being the first female quarterback in the NFL. But as she grew up, she yearned mostly to be someone her father would notice. In a macho world where only foot-ball mattered, what could she strive for? Who could she become?

Allen has written a poignant memoir of the father she tried so hard to know, about a family life that was willfully sacrificed to his endless fanatical pursuit of the Super Bowl. What emerges is a fascinating and singular behind-the-scenes look at professional football, and a memorable, bittersweet portrait of a father and his daughter, written in a fresh and perceptive voice.

2 out of 5 stars SHOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED READING IN VIRGINIA.......2006-05-26

I was particularly enlightened by her descriptions of her brother's, former Senator George Allen, violent, hostile, even sociopathic personality. These sections completely and utterly presaged George Allen's violence, hostility and ultimate meltdown on the campaign trail.

5 out of 5 stars The Personal Football Book.......2004-02-24

As an avid football fan, George Allen is one of the greatest NFL Coaches of all time. Throughout the book, Jennifer Allen describes they storybook life of an NFL coach from a footbal and personal perspective. George's rough-and-tough attitude made two winningless teams, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins, into champions. However, his personality as a coach effected his role as a father, which created tension between him and his children. As the his only daughter, Jennifer tries to win her father's affection as she struggles of being a product of an NFL coach and well-known celebrity.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting........2004-01-08

As a lifelong football fan I was hoping that "Fifth Quarter" would include more about football than Allen puts into her memoir. However, the book is well-written and engaging. If you're looking for a book about George Allen, this isn't really the book to read. However, if you're looking for an interesting book detailing the childhood of a coach's daughter, "Fifth Quarter" might be the book for you.

      1 out of 5 stars What a depressing Whine-fest.......2001-11-05

This entire story could have been written on the cover of a matchbook and saved me the time I wasted reading it. Endless complaining about her parents and siblings, If the peoples identities had been with held until the end, one might have expected to find out this was the childhood of a serial killer or some one else you might have expected to have a miserable childhood. Why would anyone even bother to write a book about people she seemed to care for as little as her family is beyond me except to possibly capitalize on her Dad's famous name and make a few bucks. A depressing read.

2 out of 5 stars This is a chick book, not a sports book.......2001-02-20

I was misled by a review in SI that said this was a great book. If you're an Oprah fan, then it's a great book. If you want to learn about the life of an NFL coach, the Washington Redskins or football in general, you're better off buying a subsciption to Sports Illustrated or reading the sports page.

About 80 percent of this book is about the struggle of the writer to get her father's attention and approval. Another 10 percent has to do with her mother, her brothers and the writer's life away from her house. Maybe 10 percent has to do with football. It is a maddening experience to put up with the "I was a girl, girls weren't important to my dad, someone please pay attention to me" anecdotes and thoughts in the hope of getting to, say, the Washington Redskins' 1972 season where the team finally made it to the Super Bowl, and then when you get there have Jennifer Allen say in almost these exact words, "I don't remember much about that the season the Redskins went to the Super Bowl." I almost hurled the book across the room.

It is unfortunate that George Allen essentially ignored his family in his obsessive quest to do what he believed he was born to do: coach. No kid should have to grow up with that kind of home life, and it's obvious that her father's inattention has left its mark on Ms. Allen. But darn it, this is an Oprah book of the month selection, not a sports book. Someone should be clear on that!

A few words about George Allen ... I am about Jennifer Allen's age. I am a lifelong Redskins fan and grew up in D.C. When Mr. Allen took the team to the Super Bowl, it was a highlight of my young life. I remember him licking his fingers, tugging his hat and mentioning milk as his drink of choice. I had no idea that he ignored his family. I'm sorry he did that, but I am also grateful that the man came to my hometown and coached my favorite team and finally made it a winner. I wish the book had a little more about what made George Allen such a successful coach and a lot less about the struggle of a little girl to get close to her daddy.

Fifth-Quarter Faith: Lessons to Learn When the Game is Over focuses on what Coach Eric Littleton characterizes as the "teachable moments" in sports. In an age of a win-at-all-cost mentality where coaches and parents alike are growing increasingly outrageous in their behavior, Fifth-Quarter Faith redefines our goals and objectives in sports using real-life stories from Coach Eric Littleton's fifteen years of coaching basketball at the high school and college levels. Using biblical stories to draw comparisons to real-life scenarios, parents and coaches alike are challenged to "raise the bar" in their attitude and conduct as it relates to their children's involvement in sports and other extracurricular activities. Fifth-Quarter Faith is a great tool for church discussion groups and Bible studies, weekend seminars, youth sports league orientations, or just for personal reading.

1 out of 5 stars This book can land you in jail.......2006-10-12

Self-published in 2001 (or earlier), this slim volume spends the first couple chapters on the merits of being in business for yourself in order to save on taxes, and the third chapter discusses incorporating your business. Because the author is a professional writer, a libertarian who does not believe in taxation of any kind, and because he is NOT a trained tax professional or even a tax columnist, a lot of the stuff here is superficial and might have simply been compiled from other books.

However, the rest of the book discusses tax shelters, mainly offshore ones, that have been pursued aggressively by IRS in recent years. Of course, for me to write this in 2006 and critique this with some benefit of hindsight may be a little unfair to the author; nonetheless, you should be very suspicious of the current value, or even legality, of the chapter on "hiding your offshore assets from the IRS!" The techniques likely won't work any more, due to pressure on tax haven from the U.S. government, and if you tried, you could well be discovered and prosecuted -- and so far IRS has a 100% conviction rate in such cases.

If you want to save on taxes, I recommend one of the many more professional titles published by well-established publishers such as McGraw-Hill and Wiley. Those books, even though sometimes peppered with self-promotion, likely won't try to land you in jail.

Do not miss the chance to take advantage of tax strategies for US tax planning. It is still not too late to start seriously planning on how to ease your US tax burden for this year. If you would like more information about tax planning, this book is a good place to start.

This third edition of Scrooge Investing, titled The New Scrooge Investing, is a great update of a very valuable resource that I have been using for years. I was delighted to see that all of the things that I look for in other investing books (like to to get free investment advice, reliable hot stock tips, free trades, and cut taxes) are all covered in detail in this book.

Mark Skousen has a great sense of humor, and you'll love his references to Uncle Scrooge, the Disney character (his inspiration for this book). In fact, I have the same collectible set of Uncle Scrooge materials that he refers to in this book.

I feel like I am a knowledgeable investor, but I found new ideas worth tens of thousands of dollars to me in the next year in the 150 tips in this book. You will certainly be repaid for your investment in the book and the time you spend with it.

I have been a subscriber to Forecasts and Strategies for many years, and found that this book is a wonderful summary of the advice I have been paying for over that time. I suspect that I can cancel my subscription now and save even more money!

Here are a few areas where you can quiz yourself:

                    (1) How should you choose a discount broker?

                    (2) Why is a discount broker often a poor idea when you buy bonds?

                    (3) Why should you be looking at closed-end country mutual funds?

                    (4) How can you use the recent rise in interest rates to increase your income and your capital gains?

                    (5) How can you get into hot IPOs with discount on-line brokers?

                    (6) What are the best ways to buy rare art?

                    (7) How should you sell items on on-line auctions?

                    (8) How can you acquire foreign currency inexpensively?

                    (9) How should you approach day-trading on-line?

If any of these questions are ones that interest you, be sure to check this book out.

I have to admit I was a little surprised at the usefulness of the tips in this book. It covers so many areas with intelligent tips it really has changed my perspective about how to manage money. Thanks Mark! A book of this type can't cover incredible DEPTH on the various topics that are presented, but it does manage to get you thinking along the lines that can save you a lot of money. Some tips are common sense to people with a lot of experience, but there are surprising gems even for an expert. Some things were a little out of my league (I haven't started any offshore investment programs) but other things really hit home (some of the online/Internet information, for example). My experience is more Internet-related, and I can see that Mark can't cover EVERY red flag to watch out for, but he leads you down a path of figuring things out for yourself. Even for an experienced online user like me, he brought up some VERY good points, which I appreciate greatly. Overall, I think people of all levels of financial expertise will benefit to some degree with this book -- easily covering the cost of the book itself many, many times over! 5 stars!

I thought this book was excellent. Skousen, editor of the financial letter Forecasts & Strategies, shows you the easiest and most effective way to increase your investment returns: lower your costs. He also points out how you can save money on insurance, collectibles, even art. I agree with Skousen. The internet and other changes taking place in the financial industry are allowing investors to control their financial destiny at a fraction of the former cost. This book is a virtual user's manual on how to do it. Well worth reading.

                        Book Description

What are the contemporary trends in workplace restructuring and the sociological impact on workers’ lives? Around what concepts will work be organized and groups and individuals motivated in their work into the new century?

To give you definition and answers to these contemporary questions, the editors of the sociological quarterly, Work and Occupations, assembled Working in Restructured Workplaces. It addresses contradictory influences in contemporary workplace restructuring, its impact on workers’ lives, and the direction and nature of future changes in the workplace. This authentic collection of sociological thought and research consists of previous works in Work and Occupations and some commissioned specifically for this book to focus on the nature, causes, and consequences of workplace restructuring.

The editors introduce a new concept of "workplace restructuring" to broaden your perspective and then assess implications for workers and their lives. The chapters address four major themes:

The last two chapters chart new research agendas on the boundaries and durability of workplace restructuring.

Billy Tauzin is as close to a piece of garbage as it is possible for a human being to become. Watch 60 Minutes' Under The Influence to see how he forced through the Medicare Drug Bill that prevents Medicare from negotiating drug prices with the pharmas. Very shortly after the passage of the bill, he took a $2 million a year job with the pharmaceutical industry.

What kind of politician votes for a bill that (by forbidding price negotiation) forces up the price of medicine? Answer: this administration's Republicans! When seniors are choosing between buying food or prescriptions, that's your contribution to society, Mr. Tauzin. I can only hope that one day you realize what a pathetic excuse for a man you are.

Keep all you earn. The government financed by a uniform, nationwide excise on the articles of consumption. Each product taxed only once. Pay excise (tax) only on the new goods. Buy used goods tax-free. Save or invest tax-free. In a nutshell: no one pays any taxes till they really can afford it. The highest amounts of taxation paid only by those who can really afford it. What could be more fair? No withholding; no paperwork; no hassle; no IRS; no more of the collosal waste of time and effort and resources, as is in the case of the present practice of taxation on incomes.

1 out of 5 stars Tauzin is a master boondoggler.......1999-10-12

Billy Tauzin is another republican with some good ideas. The problem is that his party stands for nothing in particular. Yes, they have their tendencies, but they don't have principles.

We have a republican majority, but we don't have republican agreement on anything important. Nothing's more significant that our income tax problem. Having a graduated income tax was not an idea ever promoted by our founders. It came from Karl Marx. It punishes achievement. It was invented to crush ambition.

So Tauzin will go in and argue for this NRST, but he'll leave out the step of first repealing the 16th amendment, so then we'll get the worst of all possible scenarios: an NRST and income tax running at the same time-total slavery.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and it makes good sense!.......1999-05-16

Nobody disagrees: The current Income Tax system is a mess! More and more people also are agreeing that Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-LA) has a sensible solution to fix it... no, let me be more precise ...he has a sensible solution to REPLACE it, and abolish the IRS, to boot!

His book spells it out clearly. It's easy to read and easy to understand. The kind of no-nonsense book that is fitting for his no-nonsense Tax Reform plan.

I believe that Tauzin (and the 18 bi-partisan co- sponsors of his Bill) have got it right and Tauzin has done a yeoman job of setting it forth in his book. He makes the case convincingly. Every taxpayer in America should read this book! There is a better way and Billy Tauzin shows us that way! -Cliff Cofer

5 out of 5 stars An idea whose time has come!.......1999-05-08

Tauzin presents a well thought out proposal on how to more fairly collect the taxes which pay to do the people's business. Just think! April 15th would be just another day. No more living in fear of an IRS audit. Every worker in America would see an approximate 30% increase in take home pay. What could be better than that. Low income workers would find it easier to save for retirement. Think of the job creation which would result from the subsequent elimination of capital gains taxes. Think of the family owned businesses which would carry into the next generation because of the elimination of the inheritence taxes. It's a win-win situation for everyone but the government. They lose the control of being able to tell you how to spend your money.

From the author: The imposition of a national retail sales tax would drive a wedge between the pretax and after-tax price levels. Failure to take the implications of this wedge fully into account has caused analysts to significantly underestimate the sales-tax rate that would be required to hold funding of current government programs constant in real terms.

From the author: This paper tests the hypothesis that state and local retail sales taxes are fully shifted to consumers. The empirical analysis focuses on city-specific clothing price indices for eight cities during the 1947-77 period and fourteen cities during the 1925-39 period The results for the postwar period suggest that retail prices rise by approximately the amount of the sales tax, in contrast to other studies that reveal tax overshifting. For the Depression period, clothing prices appear to rise by only two-thirds of the amount of sales taxes. This finding accords with earlier evidence based on retailer surveys in the interwar period

2 out of 5 stars What an annoying author.......2003-06-03

"Whenever you read a good book, it's like the author is right there, in the room talking to you, which is why I don't like to read good books." -Jack Handey

No, this wasn't a good book, but it often felt like the author was there talking to me, which is why I found this book annoying. It seemed Mark Bego can't end a paragraph without verbally winking at the reader. Once he concluded with "Oh that Cher, always so practical!" Please, sir, just tell it like it is. This book could have done without the constant reminders that the author is there.

                                  Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars beware: amateur effort.......2005-02-16

I had high hopes for this book. My mother came of age in Germany during the war (she grew up near Frankfurt am Main), and I've enjoyed stories about her family's experiences for years and years. I thought it would be interesting to get yet another firsthand perspective... something to compare and contrast (Gisela is a little older than my mother, and is from the Eastern part of the country).

Sorry to say that this book was utterly disappointing. While I do not doubt her sincerity and genuineness, Ms. Schneider is not a writer, and her storytelling skills are lacking. The book is haphazard, jumping from place to place, almost random at times. The grammar and syntax leave much to be desired, and her prose style is incredibly simplistic... even child-like.

And the physical book itself? Also very unprofessional. The publisher is one of those vanity-style publishers that will put just about anything into print, presumably on spec. The text looks like it was laid out directly from a type-written manuscript with 1.5 or double line spacing. This made me feel even more ripped off and disappointed.

You may very well be able to get through some of these short-comings, ultimately finding the book insightful and enjoyable. I just want to make sure you understand what you're really getting. Had I known some of these things beforehand, I would not have shelled out the $30+.

As I mentioned, I really *wanted* to like this book, and looked forward to loaning it to my mother and discussing it with her. I couldn't bring myself to even let her know I had it, though. I almost feel let down that something so close to her, and so important to making her what she is, was handled as clumisly as it was in this book.

If you're interested in the general theme of what it was like growing up in Germany during the war, I would highly recommend Ursula Hegi's "Stones from the River". Although it is a work of fiction, it has fantastic insights into that time, is very well written, and provides a heck of a story to boot. Mom loved it, too.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Inspiration - Powerful book.......2003-06-06

I enjoyed this book very much because it is about a young girl who survives the challenges and hardships of World War II. She has courage, determination and a deep faith that enabled her to overcome very difficult times. This book provides the history of what occurred in Berlin, Germany during this period. It is candid, truthful, and was difficult to put down because I could visualize the experiences the author expressed. It is an inspiration story about a strong, passionate person who rose above adversity to a better life. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about World War II, and to people who like an excellent story about an exceptional person.
