Book Description
It's an old story - a former employee leaves the company and starts his own competing business, or goes to work for a competitor. In doing so, he may have stolen trade secrets, raided the workforce and solicited clients of his former employer !
But you can protect your business legally, and with How to Create a Noncompete Agreement, you can do so without a pricey attorney. Make your own noncompete, nondisclosure and nonsolicitation agreements for employees or independent contractors and gain peace of mind.
This plain -English book provides the step-by-step information and legal forms you need to prevent ex-employees from:
* starting a competing business
* working for a competitor
* soliciting your customers or clients
* recruiting your employees
* disclosing confidential information
* and more
Whether your worker is a freelance salesperson or high-level executive, How to Create a Noncompete Agreement will help develop a legal document that can protect your business interests. The book also includes information on making nondisclosure and nonsolicitation agreements effective in states where noncompete agreements may not be enforceable.
This book provides the forms (as tear-outs and on CD-ROM) needed to write noncompete agreements.
Customer Reviews:
Does what it promises, nothing more.......2004-11-21
If you're considering buying this book, then you probably already know what a noncompetition agreement is, what a nondisclosure is, and what a nonsolicitation agreement is. You're probably already seen a couple of boilerplate examples of them.
This book takes a pretty much boilerplate agreement and stretches it into 250 pages by repeating the same basic information OVER and OVER and OVER again. You can skim the book and pretty much get what you need out of it in an hour or so, and never look back.
That's not to say it's necessarily a BAD book, per se, it just doesn't really contain any earth-shattering information that makes you REALLY need this book. At $44.95 cover price, it is certainly cheaper than any attorney who knows his/her stuff, and in my opinion, it is worth the money. Just buy the book, rip out the CD ROM, load it in your computer, change the few basic fields in the form, and you're done.
As I say, it's probably worth the money, but there's no earth-shattering information in this book. It could easily have been combined with other employment books by this publisher.
An eye opener on noncompete agreements........2003-08-11
Before reading this book, I did not know that noncompete agreements have limited enforceability in the state of Texas! This changed my whole perspective on what it means to sign a noncompete agreement whether you are an employer or an employee. When I was an employee for a Texas corporation, I passed up a couple of business opportunites (later as a small business owner) because I misunderstood the noncompete agreement I had signed and didn't realize that it was not enforceable! Now as a small business owner, I don't want to make the same mistake the other way and think I am protected from people stealing my ideas when I am not. So I started reading this book and understanding what you are trying to accomplish with such an agreement and the way to accomplish it through agreements that are enforceable. In cases where a noncompete agreement is not the right tool, there are nondisclosure and nonsolicitation agreements. The enforceability always seems to vary depending on whether an employee or an independent contractor signs it.
The best part about the book is the CD-ROM that accompanies the book with a lot of forms that can be customized for your individual situation. There are forms that can be used with employees and forms that can be used with independent contractors. This is a short book with just 8 chapters. The first two are devoted to explaining what a noncompete agreement is and when to use one. The next four chapters address these contracts for employees and independent contractors along with how to create the necessary agreements. The last two chapters are devoted to revising your agreements when workers depart and how to obtain help beyond this book.
All the sample forms are printed in the appendix so you don't have to use the CD-ROM to see if you can use any of them and if so, which one to use. I like this as I prefer reading on paper first and then just find the right electronic form later.
My favorite chapter is Chapter 7 - When Workers Depart: Revisiting Your Agreement. There is valuable information on how to enforce your agreement when someone breaks it and how to prove that they broke the agreement. The law seems to be only as good as your ability to prove things. So I thoroughly enjoyed reading this chapter as it armed me with the right information to use before approaching my lawyer for help.
Nolo books are aimed at providing legal information in plain English for the common person. I hope you are able to benefit from this book as much as I did. Good luck!
Excelent.......2002-05-23
Very good and easy to just fill in the blanks and delete the instruction parts.
It is good enough IMO to help perform the function you want it to do. (Discouraging employees from using your business plan, structure or customer base to steal business away from you.)
As with any legal document, it's first source of power is derived from your own willingness and ability to take people to court.

Book Description
In a remarkably short period of time, the Internet revolution has enabled technologically wired managers to leave their less-savvy colleagues behind, scrambling to stay competitive--and the emerging value of intranets is making the race more strenuous yet. To ease the stress, Peter Keen offers reassuringly complete coverage of Web technology as it relates to success in today's business environment.
The fifth installment in Keen's popular series of manager's glossaries, this accessible handbook quickly acquaints readers with the key concepts of the Internet and intranets. Managers can use it as a reference, or as a resource for understanding and communicating the larger significance of Web technology and business innovation. Keen and his co-authors highlight business issues throughout, emphasizing their relevance for managers through many real-life profiles. This indispensable glossary includes insightful commentary, practical applications, and over 100 essential terms to help managers decipher the Internet fast.
From digital cash to advertising on the Internet to building an intranet, authors Keen, Mougayar, and Torregrossa put the fundamental information at every manager's fingertips.
Customer Reviews:
This "glossary" only has 100 words!.......2000-11-29
With thousands of related terms, this is very limited. Every time I've picked up the book to look up a term, it wasn't available. This is a waste!
Great introduction to internet technology...........1998-10-31
The authors take a unique approach to help one understand the concepts of the internet and its confusing terminology. The introductory summary provides a clear perspective of how the internet and its related attributes have quickly developed into a powerful tool in today's marketplace. It then provides a conceptual look into the future of how this new technology will impact our daily lives. The business case examples (ie. Business Internet Vignettes) are a great reference point for all technical and non-technical backgrounds- even those with an existing understanding of how powerful the internet and e-commerce can be. These examples go beyond the big Fortune 500 success stories and document how mid-size business' apply this new technology. A well documented glossary of internet terms has also been outlined by the authors. This is a great feature for all readers who must grasp an understanding of this new technology and its related jargon.
The book is encyclopedia-like........1998-10-28
I found this book not that useful to me. I am no beginner. This book is for beginners who wants to know about jargons and generally general stuff related to it. I bought this book because of the author Walid Mougayar whom have impressed me. Helpful if you want to know something but not too deep. Useful for managers who wish to conduct conversations on technical stuff as ice-breakers. Even the initial section which describe different companies is too shallow. I get get better stuff elsewhere. Perhaps in-depth of a few companies would have been much more useful. Reading the book remind me of the old days when I spent my time in the libaries browsing through Britannica and researching on various subjects. As stated before what could be gained is just skin deep but could serve as a point for deeper reading. It could serve as s book on a serve for non-technical managers who may wish to do some initial reading before attending a technical meeting. I do not recommend this book for people who wants more in-depth knowledge. I recommend it to people who wants an overview.
Excerpt From COMPUTING REVIEWS, published June 1998.......1998-09-23
"For business, the Internet represents the prospect of change, which, in turn, implies learning to live with uncertainty. It represents one of the challenges of modern life -- to reduce and manage risk and uncertainty through knowledge and understanding. To its intended audience -- managers charged with deploying Internet technology in the service of busines customers and other stakeholders -- this skillfully crafted business narrative delivers knowledge and the means of understanding....Throughout, a recurrent theme is that of using the Internet to build and extend customer and product relationships, rather than to promote isolated hits on Web pages.... Although predictions concerning ways in which the Internet will affect us both exaggerate and minimize its likely effects, one thing is certain -- our habits will be changed. Business managers and technical support staff will want to read this concise and enjoyable executive briefing, in which humor, zingers, and incisive analysis are to be found in equal measure. " Excerpt from review published in COMPUTING REVIEWS, June 1998, p. 310.
Excellent, well-researched study for strategic thinkers.......1998-08-29
An excellend, well-researched volume with significant insights and information for those wrestling with the tactical and strategic challenges posed by inter/intranet technology and the exponentially growing e-commerce environment.
Customer Reviews:
Love this cookbook!!!.......2005-11-11
I have several cookbooks, but this is by far my favorite. I have never used a cookbook as often as I do this book, and I have consistently had great results. So far my husband and I have tried about 20 things out of this book, and they have all been delicious--cocktails, appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts.
The best part about this book is the simplicity. Most of the recipes in this book don't have a ton of ingredients, and the ingredients it calls for are usually things I have on hand, or I just need to get a few easy (and inexpensive)items. That is my main problem with other cookbooks that I own: they are beautiful to look at and the food is indeed delicious, but many of the ingredients are things I would never have on hand and I end up spending a lot of money just to get everything I need.
This cookbook has consistently produced delicious results with very little effort. The ingredients are remarkably simple in some of the dishes and it just makes cooking out of this book a really fun experience. I love the Southern California theme too. I am from San Diego and these recipes really do capture the casual yet elegant style of America's Finest City.
I have set a goal for myself that I am going to try every recipe in this book. It may take a little time, but I am looking forward to trying everything--and as I said before, I've never wanted to do that with any other cookbook. My other cookbooks look really pretty on my shelf but don't get nearly as much use as this one, because this one is not intimidating and doesn't require a huge shopping list to prepare the food.
I highly recommend this book. I'm getting one for my mom for Christmas too.
Awesome!.......2005-10-29
California Sol Food is my favorite cookbook with easy to follow recipes, beautiful photos, delicious results!!! I have a huge collection of cookbooks but I have found this book to be perfect for casual but elegant entertaining, San Diego style.
WONDERFUL!!!.......2005-10-29
I got this book as a gift for my in-laws and my parents and they LOVE IT. The recepies are easy, yet sophisticated and the instructions are so simple even those handicapped in the kitchen are able to make all of the recepies. Easy to follow recipes, vivid pictures, and amazing food. A great buy!!
Great Food AND Drink Recipies for a Good Cause.......2005-10-21
This is a fabulous cookbook. Everything I have made has been highly complimented by all who taste. I love the drink recipes, the Ultimate Sangria is to die for! The great introductions to each meal are a great read as well. The best part about the purchase is you know that your money is not only going to help you make good food, but to help Junior League of San Diego. This cook book is a worthy purchase!
Something for everyone!!.......2005-10-12
By far this is my favorite cookbook to own and give as a gift for bridal showers, birthdays, or the holidays. I love that it includes recipes for cocktails. :-) I've given this as a gift to women AND men and have been warmly thanked by all. It even earned the approval of my boyfriend's sister, who has a Master's degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins. She is a tough critic when it comes to food and was impressed by the variety in California Sol Food and the light, healthy dishes. Buy your own copy (or 2) today!

The Ethics of Science: An Introduction (Philosophical Issues in Science)
ASIN: 0824782089 |
Book Description
This compact reference succinctly explains the engineering profession's codes of ethics using case studies drawn from decisions of the National Society of Professional Engineers' (NSPE) Board of Ethical Review, examining ethical challenges in engineering, construction, and project management. It includes study questions to supplement general engineering survey courses and a list of references to aid practicing engineers in exploring topics in depth. Concentrating primarily on situations engineers encounter on a daily basis and offering pragmatic answers to ethical questions, What Every Engineer Should Know About Ethics discusses recent headline-making disasters such as the Challenger explosion, the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, and the Hyatt-Regency Hotel collapse; considers the merits and drawbacks of professional codes of ethics; covers the application of the "committee approach" to specific cases; compares and contrasts ethical codes and personal values with alternative approaches to morality; defines professional licensing and registration and enumerates their prerequisites; outlines legal standards for liability; emphasizes the importance of communication, coordination, and documentation; includes a discussion of "whistleblowing;" defines the engineer's primary ethical responsibility; and more.

A Quick Overview of Engineering Ethics.......2005-11-21
I found this text while searching for a book to explain engineering ethics for a course at Oklahoma State University. Kenneth Humphreys directs his writing toward engineering students and professionals, much like himself, a licensed professional engineer, to teach them the importance of ethics. He is overly qualified for addressing this topic, as he is the chairman of the Professional Engineers of North Carolina and contributes regularly to the "Ethics Corner" in the magazine, Professional Engineer. This book's technical text is topically organized with each chapter dedicated to a topic and would make a wonderful textbook for an introduction to engineering course. It is also up-to-date, having been published in 1999 and includes many timely examples and case studies which highlight the importance of ethical engineering. The progression of the book is from teaching about engineering ethics, to ways to keep current on engineering ethics topics and encouraging ethical behavior, to the practicing ethics in the various areas of an engineer's profession. Each chapter can stand on its own which makes it great for a quick reference book.
review of What Every Engineer...About Ethics.......2005-07-05
Outstanding book. I teach engineering ethics and have had about 50 graduate students read this book and write a report describing the contents. All have found it very interesting and valuable.

Book Description
From his initial success in the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village with Anne Meara, who would be the love of his life, to his serenity-seeking days on "Seinfeld" and later on "The King of Queens," Jerry Stiller has consistently proven himself to be a force in showbiz. In "Married to Laughter," he brings us into his world and recounts, in a tone that is laugh-out-loud funny and strikingly honest, his passion for entertainment and working with people such as Ed Sullivan, Mike Nichols, Robin Williams, and Jerry Seinfeld, who were there along the way. At the heart of this tale is Stiller's partnership, both onstage and off, with Anne Meara. He shares the affectionate story of their long-surviving relationship, spotlighting the pleasures and challenges of raising a family in an interfaith show business marriage. "Married to Laughter" is the story of an actor who never let go of his dreams, but ultimately it is the story of two people who found their place in show business without losing sight of each other.

A Glimpse into Jerry Stiller's Life.......2007-04-04
Comedian Jerry Stiller shares stories from his life that are sure to make you laugh and inspire you to work hard for your dream.
Great book about Ben's parents.......2007-03-19
Ok, I'll admit it. I bought the book with the hope of getting a glimpse into the childhood and family life of Ben Stiller. I didn't find out much about him, but I did learn a lot about his parents. I first saw Jerry Stiller in Seinfeld, I had no idea what a long resume he had prior to that. I enjoyed every page of his book and didn't want it to end. He certainly has worked hard for all his fame and I appreciate that he shared so many stories with his honest feelings. Jerry and his wife are both extremely talented and versatile performers.
Life, love and laughter..........2003-09-09
Really liked this book. Jerry Stiller takes us on a trip through his life, and it's funny, sad, and always interesting. I found out so many things about him that I didn't know--such as: he was a stage actor, in Shakespeare, no less! And, his courtship of, and eventual marriage to, Anne Meara, is related--sometimes humorously, sometimes seriously, but always with honesty. Jerry and Anne discover that their career aspirations aren't really the same, and each builds their own career, but never forgetting each other. The road is sometimes bumpy, but they don't lose sight of one another, and their love for each other is deep and true. A fine book, Mr. Stiller!
Disappointing effort from an otherwise funny guy.......2001-12-25
Read MARRIED TO LAUGHTER; A LOVE STORY FEATURING
ANNE MEARA by Jerry Stiller . . . had looked forward to this book
as I've always enjoyed Stiller's work (even before he was
"rediscovered" on SEINFELD) . . . however, it just didn't
do very much for me . . . most of the emphasis is on his work
in the theater . . . there's very little about his work on television . . . and if you're expecting anything about Ben Stiller, you won't find it here--except for one photograph when he was younger.
Not quite sure why I did not like this book . . . but couldn't even find that many memorable passages to share with you . . . that is usually a tip-off to me; i.e., if I'm "into" a book, I'll be making all sorts of notes about it . . . on this one, all I could come up with was the following:
As the curtain rose I realized in that split second that Hank was
right. I had never really spoken to anyone onstage; worse yet, I had never listened. I was always Acting, with a capital A. Had my success in college been a gigantic hoax?
[on his love for cooking and his special recipe for Chicken Gai Yung]I decided I could sell the delicious chicken legs door to door. I told Anne my idea. I'd marinate the legs overnight, broil then in the morning,and then hit every apartment building on the West Side. A dollar a leg. I figured it was an idea whose time had come, and it took me away from the pain of rejection. We'd become rich and possibly franchise the idea. You're sitting at home, watching TV. A knock on the door, "I'm selling
Chicken Gai Yung. It's only a buck." Who could resist?
[explaining jazz to Anne, who never understood it] "Because you're orderly. Jazz can be chaotic. It's like some storm that suddenly erupts spontaneously in a musician's soul. It's somebody else's sunset--someone else's terror. Who wants to hear the musical version of someone else's problems? A lot of dissonance. Just when you're ready to say, 'I've had enough,' you hear the
thread of a melody. It falls easily on the ears. The storm has subsided. You're suddenly caught up and now you're listening to Bill Evan's inner voice. He's taken us on a trip we've all been on ourselves at one time or another. Now he's out of his wilderness. The search for life's' golden path is over." I was
starting to sound like a poet.
Self absorbed,self centered minus insight or introspection.......2001-10-06
Jerry Stiller has lived a long interesting life which one might think would lead to some internal truths or insights. Instead he reveals himself to be a self-absorbed, self-centered individual from his earliest years. He admits he never "gets" his wife's playwriting - and after almost 50 years of marriage, he wonders if they'll have anything in common if both of their careers come to an end. Even humorous anecdotes are few and far between...the anecdotes about other performers are brief and superficial (Robin Williams and Walter Matthau receive some praise, but only because they were generous performers - generous to Jerry, of course). There are more than a few biggoted and stereotypical remarks about his wife's Irish-American family and background, which would not be tolerated if they were reversed and directed toward *his* ethnic background (Stiller quite matter-of-factly mentions Henny Youngman's reference to Nantucket Island as Goy-ville...) I wish Ann Meara would write her version of their lives.
